The results show that trends in ET in spring and summer are determined primarily by trends in precipitation and snowmelt that determine water availability. From April to June, ET trends are mostly positive due primarily to earlier snowmelt and earlier emergence of snow-free ground, and secondarily to increasing trends in spring precipitation. From July to September trends in ET are more strongly influenced by precipitation trends, with the exception of areas (most notably California) that receive little summer precipitation and have experienced large changes in snowmelt timing. Trends in the seasonal timing of ET are modest, but during the period 1947–2003 when temperature trends are large, they reflect a shift of ET from midsummer to early summer and late spring. As in other studies, it is found that runoff is occurring earlier in spring, a trend that is related primarily to increasing temperature, and is most apparent during 1947–2003. Trends in the annual runoff ratio, a variable critical to western water management, are determined primarily by trends in cool season precipitation, rather than changes in the timing of runoff or ET. It was found that the signature of temperature-related trends in runoff and SM is strongly keyed to mean midwinter [December–February (DJF)] temperatures. Areas with warmer winter temperatures show increasing trends in the runoff fraction as early as February, and colder areas as late as June. Trends toward earlier spring SM recharge are apparent and increasing trends in SM on 1 April are evident over much of the region. The 1 July SM trends are less affected by snowmelt changes and are controlled more by precipitation trends. It simply shows the increasing or decreasing of searching times for any term on the biggest search engine on the web. The goal of this paper is to find out whether Google Trends data has a significant correlation with the characteristics of the subject in the real world or not? For instance, is there any meaningful correlation between “volume search index” in Google Trends for a term like “Oil Price” and actual worldwide Oil price? This paper tests the hypothesis on two similar cases; “Oil Price” and “Gold Price” to answer the above question. Research findings have shown a strong correlation between Google Trends volume search index and actual real world data for both terms. We have concluded that Google Trends could be a valuable, fast and free tool to predict the trends of such a trends, although it definitely needs more studies for verification or generalize the method. The lack of certainty from climate models warrants an examination of trends in observational records. However, the temporal resolution of records may affect the success of trend detection. Daily observations are often used, but may be too coarse to detect changes. Sub-daily records may improve detection, but their value is not yet quantified. Using daily and hourly records from 24 rain gages in Portland, Oregon (OR), trends in precipitation intensity and volume are examined for the period of 1999–2015. Daily intensity is measured using the Simple Daily Intensity Index, and this method is adapted to measure hourly scale intensity. Kendall’s tau, a non-parametric correlation coefficient, is used for monotonic trend detection. Field significance and tests for spatial autocorrelation using Moran’s Index are used to determine the significance of group hypothesis tests. Results indicate that the hourly data is superior in trend detection when compared with daily data; more trends are detected with hourly scale data at both the 5% and 10% significance levels. Hourly records showed a significant increase in 6 of 12 months, while daily records showed a significant increase in 4 of 12 months at the 10% significance level. At both scales increasing trends were concentrated in spring and summer months, while no winter trends were detected. Volume was shown to be increasing in most months experiencing increased intensity, and is a probable driver of the intensity trends observed. Year: 2016 Trends in near-surface air temperature and precipitation over South America are examined for the periods 1975–2004 and 1955–2004, respectively, using multiple observational and climate model data sets. The results for observed near-surface air temperature show an overall warming trend over much of the continent, with the largest magnitudes over central Brazil. These observed trends are found to be statistically significant using pre-industrial control simulations from the fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) as the baseline to estimate natural climate variability. The observed trends are compared with those obtained in natural-only CMIP5 simulations, in which only natural forcings (i.e. volcanoes and solar variability) are included, and in historical CMIP5 simulations, in which anthropogenic forcings (i.e. changes in the atmospheric composition) are further incorporated. The historical CMIP5 simulations are more successful in capturing the observed temperature trends than the simulations with natural forcings only. It is suggested that anthropogenic warming is already evident over much of South America. Unlike the warming trends, observed precipitation trends over South America are less spatially coherent with both negative and positive values across the continent. Significant positive trends are found over South America in only one of the data sets used, and over a region that roughly encompasses the southern part of La Plata Basin (southern Brazil, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina) in all data sets used. The historical CMIP5 simulations do not capture this feature. No firm conclusions are reached, therefore, for anthropogenic influences on precipitation changes in the period selected for study. This study calculates a subset of these indices from observed and modelled precipitation data in Portland, Oregon. Five rainfall gages from a high resolution rain gage network and projections from three downscaled global climate models including CanESM2, CESM1, CNRM-CM5 are used to calculate precipitation indices. Mann-Kendall's tau is used to detect monotonic trends in indices. The observational record is compared with models for the historic period (1977-2005) and these past trends are compared with projected future trends (2006-2100). The influence of study unit on trend detection is analyzed by computing trends at the annual and monthly scale. Study unit is show to be important for trend detection. When the annual study unit is used, projected future trends towards increased precipitation intensity and event volumes are not observed in the historic data. Year: 2003 State-level Breeding Bird Survey (1980-1998) and U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics were used to test the hypothesis that changes in agricultural land use within the eastern and central U.S. have driven population trends of grassland and shrub habitat birds over the past two decades. The degree to which population trends differed between grassland and shrub habitats was evaluated with respect to migratory and nesting behavior. Grassland birds declined significantly between 1980 and 1999, but, on average, shrub habitat species did not. Grassland-breeding, long-distance migrants exhibited the strongest negative trends. Most species (78%; n = 63) exhibited at least one significant association between population trends and changes in agricultural land use, and in most, land use "explained" 25-30% of the variation in population trends among states. Changes in the farmland landscape accounted for more of the interstate variability of population trends of short-distance migrants than of both long-distance migrants and residents, and that variability was greater in grassland than shrub species. Declines in the area of rangeland and cover crops were followed by population declines and increases, respectively, by many species. Increases of land in the Conservation Reserve Program had negative associations with population trends of some shrub species. The socio-economically disadvantaged 3. Occupational education 4. Coeducational classes 5. Specialized semester courses 6. Family life courses A questionnaire was constructed, validated, and sent to 394 home economics teachers in the State of Oregon to gain answers to the five questions as they related to the six trends. Of the questionnaires mailed out, 241 were returned and 160 (41 percent) were usable. Nearly one half of the respondents were 40 years of age or older. Approximately two thirds were married. Nearly 70 percent received their bachelor's degrees since 1940. Fewer than 15 percent of the respondents had master's degrees and over 80 percent of these were received since 1960. About one half of the teachers had taken from 1-42 quarter hours beyond their last degree. At least one half of the respondents had had six or fewer years teaching experience and some experience in teaching other subject matter areas. Most (two thirds) taught in senior high schools where enrollments of more than one half of the schools were less than 1,000. Nearly one half of the respondents did not indicate that boys were a part of their program. Analysis of data showed that the respondents held quite positive beliefs concerning each of the six trends. For every trend, except programs for the handicapped, at least 70 percent felt that the home economics education programs were very important or moderately important. Fewer than five percent had negative feelings about any of the trends excepting programs for the handicapped and occupational education where 30 percent and 12 percent of the replies were negative and most often showed the feeling that respondents felt other groups were better qualified. The respondents showed a general willingness to support the trends with at least three fourths giving positive replies for every trend except programs for the handicapped and coeducational classes. The majority of the positive responses showed that the respondents were most interested in indirect types of support rather than active support. Negative replies most often showed that respondents believed other programs were more important, that they did not have time to support the trend, or that there was no need for the program in their community. Over one half of the respondents were willing to further prepare themselves for involvement in the six trends and were most interested in family life courses, occupational education and programs for the socio-economically disadvantaged. Special workshops was most often indicated as the preferred method of preparation. Negative replies showed that respondents were more interested in other areas or were already prepared. At least 80 percent of the respondents were willing to assume teaching responsibilities for every trend except occupational education and programs for the handicapped. Respondents often said they would teach in these trends only if they were given special preparation or if they were given time to prepare. Replies in the negative category most often indicated that the respondents were already involved or were more interested in other areas. Although nearly 70 percent of the respondents would assume leadership roles for family life, specialized semester, and coeducational classes, fewer than one half would take on this responsibility for occupational education and programs for the socio- economically disadvantaged and fewer than one fourth would lead programs for the handicapped. Respondents who replied negatively felt that they did not have the background or did not have the time or interest. The following conclusions were reached. 1. The majority of the respondents held favorable attitudes about the six trends. 2. Programs for the handicapped, the socio- economically disadvantaged, and occupational education followed similar patterns of acceptance and of respondents' willingness to be involved, while coeducational classes, specialized semester courses, family life courses were more accepted than the first three trends. For every trend, except programs for the handicapped, at least 70 percent felt that the home economics education programs were very important or moderately important. Fewer than five percent had negative feelings about any of the trends excepting programs for the handicapped and occupational education where 30 percent and 12 percent of the replies were negative and most often showed the feeling that respondents felt other groups were better qualified. The respondents showed a general willingness to support the trends with at least three fourths giving positive replies for every trend except programs for the handicapped and coeducational classes. The majority of the positive responses showed that the respondents were most interested in indirect types of support rather than active support. Negative replies most often showed that respondents believed other programs were more important, that they did not have time to support the trend, or that there was no need for the program in their community. Over one half of the respondents were willing to further prepare themselves for involvement in the six trends and were most interested in family life courses, occupational education and programs for the socio-economically disadvantaged. Special workshops was most often indicated as the preferred method of preparation. Negative replies showed that respondents were more interested in other areas or were already prepared. At least 80 percent of the respondents were willing to assume teaching responsibilities for every trend except occupational education and programs for the handicapped. Respondents often said they would teach in these trends only if they were given special preparation or if they were given time to prepare. Replies in the negative category most often indicated that the respondents were already involved or were more interested in other areas. Although nearly 70 percent of the respondents would assume leadership roles for family life, specialized semester, and coeducational classes, fewer than one half would take on this responsibility for occupational education and programs for the socio- economically disadvantaged and fewer than one fourth would lead programs for the handicapped. Respondents who replied negatively felt that they did not have the background or did not have the time or interest. The following conclusions were reached. 1. The majority of the respondents held favorable attitudes about the six trends. 2. Programs for the handicapped, the socio- economically disadvantaged, and occupational education followed similar patterns of acceptance and of respondents' willingness to be involved, while coeducational classes, specialized semester courses, family life courses were more accepted than the first three trends. Height-related trends in foliar physiological and anatomical characteristics were examined both within trees as well as between trees of different heights. Emphasis was placed on discovering the mechanistic nature of the observed growth constraints and adaptive strategies. This research was conducted in the interest of enhancing our knowledge of the causes of age- and size-related decline in forest productivity. The research conducted for this dissertation explored several previously uninvestigated mechanisms for size-related reductions in forest productivity that are associated with tree foliar structure and function. Height-related trends in foliar turgor associated with the gravitational hydrostatic pressure gradient were identified as well as subsequent impacts on leaf and shoot morphology. Osmotic potential declined with height providing evidence of osmotic adjustment to offset the height-related decline in leaf turgor. This osmotic adjustment occurred only seasonally, and not during the spring when turgor maintenance is most important for leaf expansion. Gradients in leaf turgor were reflected in height-related trends in leaf and shoot morphology. Previous work has documented height-related trends in foliar morphological characteristics and earlier studies have examined osmotic adjustment as an adaptation to drought and salinity stress. Height-related trends in foliar morphological characteristics have typically been attributed to light gradients along vertical profiles. Hydraulic vulnerability curves of foliage collected at different heights indicated that increased height is correlated with reduced hydraulic efficiency and increased hydraulic safety. These opposing trends suggest the existence of a compensatory mechanism in foliage that functions to reduce hydraulic vulnerability at the expense of transport capacity. The research in this dissertation is the first to examine the dynamic relationships between leaf hydraulics and stomatal behavior in temperate conifers, and the first to examine how these characteristics are affected by tree height. Height-related trends in leaf xylem anatomical characteristics were examined and strong correlations were identified between these anatomical characteristics and the patterns of leaf hydraulic efficiency and safety that were observed in previous work for this dissertation. Theoretical estimates of leaf hydraulic efficiency (Kleaf-theoretical) based upon the Hagen-Pouseille equation and measured leaf tracheid anatomical characteristics were strongly correlated with laboratory measurements of Kleaf, providing further evidence of a causal relationship between height-related trends in both leaf tracheid anatomical properties and leaf hydraulic function. Can enhancing the context in computer graphics help DMs visualize problems? To answer this research question, three experiments were done in the field on computer graphics. One hundred five DMs tried 17 different contexts for time-series trends displayed on a microcomputer monitor. The research objective was to find out whether changing the context in graphics affected the decision efficiency (accuracy/response time) of DMs in determining relationships among trends. Essential for measuring the effect were interactive computer programs that displayed random trends in graphics of differing contexts, collected the DMs' answers to questions about the trends, and graded 1133 graphics based on the answers, response times, and trend data. The experimental results supported the hypothesis that computers can enhance the visual context surrounding time-series trends so that DMs can better visualize problems. Results were based on comparisons of DMs' decision efficiencies between trial graphics with differing contextual enhancements and based on answers to questions about the trial graphics. However, identification of the appropriate temporal and spatial scales of animal response, and then obtaining data at these scales present two major challenges to developing predictive models. In heterogeneous forested mountain landscapes I examined: A) the relative drivers of climatic variability at fine spatial scales under the forest canopy ('microclimate'), B) the influence of microclimate on local-scale occupancy dynamics of bird communities, and C) the effects of spatial scale and imperfect bird detection on long-term avian population trends. Climate change has been predicted to cause widespread biodiversity declines. However, the capacity of climate envelope models for predicting the future of biodiversity has been questioned due to the mismatch between the scale of available data (i.e., global climate models) and the scales at which organisms experience their environment. Local-scale variation in microclimate is hypothesized to provide potential ‘microrefugia’ for biodiversity, but the relative role of elevation, microtopography, and vegetation structure in driving microclimate is not well known. If the microrefugia hypothesis is true, I expected to see areas on the landscape that remained relatively cooler (i.e., buffered sites). To test this, I collected temperature data at 183 sites across elevation and forest structure gradients in complex terrain of the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, USA (Chapter 2). I used boosted regression trees, a novel machine learning approach, to determine the relative influence of vegetation structure, microtopography, and elevation as drivers of microclimate and mapped fine-scale distributions of temperature across the landscape. Models performed extremely well on independent data - cross-validation correlations between testing and training data were 0.69 - 0.98 for ten selected climate variables. Elevation was the dominant driver in fine-scale microclimate patterns, although vegetation and microtopography also showed substantial relative influences. For instance, during the spring-summer transition, maximum monthly temperatures observed in old-growth sites were 2.6°C (95% CI: 1.8 - 3.3°C) cooler than plantation sites and minimum temperatures during winter months were 0.6°C (95% CI: 0.4 - 0.8°C) warmer. This suggests that older forest stands mediate changes in temperature by buffering against warming during summer months and moderating cold temperatures during the winter. Climate is generally considered most influential on species distributions at large spatial scales; however much microclimate variability exists within regional patterns. I tested whether this high degree of microclimate variability has relevance for predicting species distributions and occupancy dynamics of the Andrews Forest bird community. I collected bird occurrence data in 2012 and 2013 at all 183 sites with fine-scale temperature measurements. I used dynamic occupancy models to test the effects of temperature on occupancy and apparent within-season bird movement while statistically accounting for vegetation effects and imperfect bird detection (Chapter 3). Most species (87%) exhibited within-season shifts in response to local-scale temperature metrics. Effects of temperature on within-season occupancy dynamics were as large or larger (1 to 1.7 times) than vegetation. However, individual species were almost as likely to shift toward warmer sites as toward cooler sites, suggesting that microclimate preferences are species-specific. My results emphasize that high-resolution temperature data provide valuable insight into avian distribution dynamics in montane forest environments and that microclimate is an important variable in breeding season habitat selection by forest birds. I hypothesize that microclimate-associated distribution shifts may reflect species' potential for behavioral buffering from climate change in complex terrain. Factors influencing population trends often differ depending on the spatial scale under consideration. Further, accurate estimation of trends requires accounting for biases caused by imperfect detection. To test the degree to which population trends are consistent across scales, I estimated landscape-scale bird population trends from 1999-2012 for 38 species at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF) in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA and compared them to regional and local trends (Chapter 4). I used a new method - open-population binomial mixture models - to test the hypothesis that imperfect detection in bird sampling has the potential to bias trend estimates. I also tested for generalities in species responses by predicting population trends as a function of life history and ecological traits. Landscape-scale trends were correlated with regional and local trends, but generally these correlations were weak (r = 0.12 - 0.4). Further, more species were declining at the regional scale compared to within the relatively undisturbed HBEF. Life history and ecological traits did not explain any of the variability in the HBEF trends. However, at the regional scale, species that occurred at higher elevations were more likely to be declining and species associated with older forests have increased. I hypothesize that these differences could be attributed to both elevated rates of land-use change in the broader region and the fact that the structure of regional data did not permit modeling of imperfect detection. Applying a Fisher and Yates Table of Randomized Numbers to the total summer school population in each of the years between and including 1956 and 1962, a random selection of 250 students from each year was made. The 1750 students' I.Q. scores, their Iowa Percentile scores, and their Grade Point Averages in the basic yearly subject grades comprised the three variables upon which the statistical analysis was based. Preliminary computations revealed that the means of the three variables generally (15 times out of 18) increased over those of the previous year during 1956 through 1962, and the standard deviation of the various distributions generally remained similar. To determine whether there was a significant linear trend during the years under study and, if so, whether any deviations from that trend were significant, a test of linear regression was applied to the following null hypotheses: scores. (1) There is no linear trend exhibited by the mean I.Q. (2) The relationship of the mean I.Q. scores is not nonlinear. (3) There is no linear trend exhibited by the mean of the Iowa Percentile scores. (4) The relationship of the mean Iowa Percentile scores is not nonlinear. (5) There is no linear trend exhibited by the mean G.P.A. (6) The relationship of the mean G.P.A. is not nonlinear. Since the F-ratio for the linear trend of the mean scores of the I.Q. (8.99), the Iowa Percentile (5.07), and the G.P.A. (6.95) were all above the .05 level of probability (3.84), Null Hypotheses (1), (3), and (5) were rejected. With respect to significant deviations from this linear trend, the F-ratio indicated that the mean scores for the I.Q. (.13), the Iowa Percentile (.13), and the G.P.A. Certain implications grow from these findings: 1. To meet the changing needs of learners, the summer school should periodically re-evaluate its curriculum. 2. Another purpose is to determine if, by the end of the first grade, male students interrupted their teachers more than female students. Two first grade teachers, one male and one female, were used. Each had two years of teaching experience. Classes consisted of 20 boys and 19 girls, all from predominantly White, middle-class backgrounds. There were 15 observation sessions of 25 minutes in each classroom. A frequency count of verbal interactions, interruptions and types of responses was made. These data were put into a contingency table from which the chi-square statistic was calculated as a test for significance. The Yates correction for continuity was used for types of responses. Interaction graphs were constructed to indicate possible trends. Significance was established at the .01 level of significance. This study quantified trends in daily streamflow from 1950-2012 in 28 pairs of gages above and below dams in the CRB, including the U.S. and Canada. Each gage pair consisted of an above-dam gage that is primarily forested and has little apparent human disturbance and minimal flow regulation or diversions, combined with a below-dam gage immediately downstream of a major dam and reservoir. Monthly streamflow and precipitation for a total of 59 sites was correlated with monthly indices of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), the Northern Pacific Index (NPI), the Pacific North America pattern (PNA), and the 700-millibar wind speeds (u700) using Pearson's r. Long-term trends and patterns in daily streamflow and climate data were estimated using linear regression, the Mann-Kendall test, and wavelet analysis. Streamflow was generally weakly correlated with NPI, PNA, and PDO, while positively correlated with upper elevation wind speed at low elevations during wet months. Fewer than half of above-dam gages in the CRB have experienced increasing trends in daily streamflow from mid-March to the beginning of May over the period 1950 to 2012, whereas a majority has experienced decreasing trends from the middle of May to the middle of October. These trends in above-dam basins are consistent with trends expected from climate change, but they also may be affected by legacies of past forest harvest or wildfire. Below dams, reservoir management appears to have overwritten the signal of earlier snowmelt, except in the Boise sub-basin, but long-term declines in late summer flows were evident at half of below-dam sites. Declining summer flows below dams were attributable to a variety of factors, including changes in reservoir management as well as reservoir management that propagates signals from above dam catchments, such as climate change or forest-harvest legacy effects on streamflow. The trend in U.S. alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes was generally decreasing in the mid to late 1980’s but has remained fairly flat since the early 1990s. In 1982, approximately 60% of all US traffic fatalities were alcohol-related. By 1994, this had decreased to 43% but in the decade that followed it has changed little. In 2005, nearly 39% of fatal crashes still involved alcohol. This contrasts sharply with the trends in many other peer industrialized countries such as Australia which has seen a 60% drop in the total number of fatal alcohol-involved crashes since 1980. In most U.S. jurisdictions, the trend for alcohol-involved crashes mirrors the disappointing national trends and in some has even been slightly increasing. The reasons for these trends are many but can be found in changing demographics, reduced resources for enforcement, prosecution, and treatment as well as changing public behaviors and attitudes. The objective of this study was to identify tools, techniques and strategies that could help reverse this trend for the Portland metropolitan area. The second study compared day and overnight visitors to three high-use destinations in terms of their perception of social and ecological impacts of wilderness recreation, evaluation of impacts, and support for management actions. Overnight users were more likely to notice impacts, but predicted differences in reaction to impacts and support for management actions were not found. The only exception was that overnight users were more likely to object to management actions that would target overnight users. Results showed significant differences among study sites. The third study tested four methods of revegetating impacted campsites: scarification, importing organic material, transplanting, and transplanting with watering. These commonly used methods have not been systematically investigated previously. Six campsites in Three Sisters Wilderness were treated in 1991 and reevaluated in 1994. Importing organic material and scarification were found to improve vegetation recovery and species richness very little compared to controls, but both transplanting techniques had significant effects, often because of the presence of other species or propagules in the transplanted plugs. Watering was found to have no effect on the survival of transplanted mountain hemlock seedlings. Patterns were compared to a general trend line of the total cancer incidence from the years 1975-2013, with a focus on incidence in the age group 85+. Results varied substantially by cancer type. Streamflow patterns are a result of the interaction of many factors, including climate, vegetation, geology, and topography. Analyses indicate that streamflow patterns have changed around the United States over the past century, raising questions about the possible role of climate variability as a driver of water yield. This thesis examines streamflow trends in two separate analyses: a study of streamflow trends and the physical characteristics of large basins in the Willamette River Basin, and a study of streamflow trends in small headwater basins around the United States. In the Willamette River basin, as in much of the western US where summer precipitation is low, declining streamflow will exacerbate the task of water management to meet varying demands for water. Although regional climate warming over the past half-century in the Pacific Northwest is a plausible cause of declining streamflow, climate is only one of several factors that determine the hydrologic regime of the Willamette River basin. This study quantified trends in streamflow from 1950 to 2010 in ten sub-basins of the Willamette, including seven 60-600 km² predominantly forested sub-basins above dams in the Willamette National Forest, and three gages downstream of dams in urban areas of the Willamette valley (Albany, Salem, and Portland). Trends at the annual, seasonal, and daily time scales were estimated using linear regression with appropriate transformation of variables and the Mann-Kendall non-parametric test. Trends in streamflow and runoff ratios in the Willamette Basin were compared to geology, topography, and changes in forest cover above dams. Data on forest cover by age class were obtained from Willamette National Forest. Up to 29% of area in sub-basins above dams was clearcut since the 1930s. From 1 to 51% of basin area above dams is on young (<7 ma) volcanic rocks of the High Cascades, which have longer water residence times than the older (7-25 ma) volcanic rocks of the western Cascades, which make up the remainder of basin area above dams. From 71 to 93% of basin area above dams is above 800 m elevation, where seasonal snowpacks are controlled by winter temperature and precipitation. Over the study period (1950-2010), precipitation in the Willamette River basin did not change significantly at the seasonal or annual time scale. Declining streamflows in spring and summer were found in low elevation basins above dams. These trends may be attributed to climate-warming-induced increases in the rain:snow ratio and earlier snowmelt, or changes in water use by vegetation in response to climate warming, or both. More rapid declines in summer and fall discharge and runoff ratios occurred in basins which experienced relatively rapid conversion of old to young forest in the past half-century and have relatively large proportions of young forest today. Declining flows can be attributed to increasing evapotranspiration in young forests and shallow flow paths in Western Cascades-dominated basins that intersect the rooting zone. High-elevation basins with greater percentages of High Cascades geology are less susceptible to declining discharge, even if they have substantial areas in young forest. In contrast to the trends in streamflow above dams, trends over time in streamflow downstream of dams in the Willamette basin have been largely influenced by management of reservoirs and flow. Flow downstream of the dams has become more homogenized throughout the year, with higher flows in the fall and declines in the later winter/early spring. However, discharge has declined at the annual time scale, and in the spring and summer. These trends may be a result of flow management, decreasing spring streamflow upstream of the dams, or a recent trend of relatively dry years. Although historical water yields may not be representative of future water yields, long term historical climate and discharge records from instrumented sites provide the basis for understanding the effects of climate variability on water yield from headwater systems. This study quantified trends in climate and streamflow data from eight predominantly forested headwater basins in the US to understand the complex relationships between climate change, basin geography, vegetation, history, and hydrology. Data were obtained for up to 70-year periods from the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) network and US Forest Service system of Experimental Forests and Ranges (EFR). Trends in precipitation, temperature, discharge, and runoff ratios were calculated for annual, seasonal, and daily data using linear regression of appropriately transformed data and Mann-Kendall non-parametric tests. Linear regression with appropriate transformation of variables produced similar results to the Mann-Kendall analysis. The first day of spring (defined as the last day of freezing temperature) has moved earlier by 0.31 to 1.98 days/year at all sites, except the alpine site. Most sites experienced significant increases in spring minimum air temperature, but only a few sites experienced an associated change in spring runoff ratios. Spring runoff ratios decreased in sites with snowpacks and near-zero mean spring air temperature (AND). Fall baseflow increased at the alpine, non-forested site (NWT), apparently as a result of increased permafrost melt. Earlier snowmelt and decreases in spring discharge and runoff ratios are expected to lead to increases in winter streamflow and reductions in summer streamflow. However, despite increases in summer minimum air temperature at most sites, summer runoff ratios did not change at most sites, and some sites (HBR, FER) experienced increases in summer and fall runoff ratios. The expected reduction in summer runoff ratios in response to warmer temperature at these sites may have been mitigated by reductions in leaf area due to disturbance or forest succession after logging in the early 1900s. These findings indicate that both climate change and hydrologic response to climate change varies across the US. The lack of expected streamflow responses apparently is the result of ecosystem processes that produce counteracting trends in vegetation water use in response to climate trends; these processes deserve further study. Linear regression with appropriate transformation of variables produced similar results to the Mann-Kendall analysis. The first day of spring (defined as the last day of freezing temperature) has moved earlier by 0.31 to 1.98 days/year at all sites, except the alpine site. Most sites experienced significant increases in spring minimum air temperature, but only a few sites experienced an associated change in spring runoff ratios. Spring runoff ratios decreased in sites with snowpacks and near-zero mean spring air temperature (AND). Fall baseflow increased at the alpine, non-forested site (NWT), apparently as a result of increased permafrost melt. Earlier snowmelt and decreases in spring discharge and runoff ratios are expected to lead to increases in winter streamflow and reductions in summer streamflow. However, despite increases in summer minimum air temperature at most sites, summer runoff ratios did not change at most sites, and some sites (HBR, FER) experienced increases in summer and fall runoff ratios. The expected reduction in summer runoff ratios in response to warmer temperature at these sites may have been mitigated by reductions in leaf area due to disturbance or forest succession after logging in the early 1900s. These findings indicate that both climate change and hydrologic response to climate change varies across the US. The lack of expected streamflow responses apparently is the result of ecosystem processes that produce counteracting trends in vegetation water use in response to climate trends; these processes deserve further study. This study estimated trends in the male segment of greater sage-grouse breeding populations within core and periphery areas in seven habitat management zones during two time periods, 1965-2015 and 2005-2015. In addition, we compared analysis methods used in this study to previous studies, and provided recommendations on future data collection. We developed a hierarchical model that followed individual leks through time and allowed trends at individual leks to inform estimates of regional trends. We fit overdispersed Poisson models using a Bayesian hierarchical framework and Markov-chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. The average range-wide decline, weighted across management zones, was 2.10% per year, for an average total decline of 66% from 1965-2015. Estimates of trend over 2005-2015 for individual management zones, in both core and periphery areas, indicated that recent annual declines were more severe compared to the average declines over the entire analysis period 1965-2015. The declines estimated in this study were similar to other studies; however, review of the literature reveals numerous issues surrounding the historical data, the on-going monitoring and sampling scheme, and utilization of various statistical methods, all of which limit our inference on population trends.
