This thesis will explore The Imagery of Chess exhibition in terms of the intertwined aspects of Duchamp’s identity: artist, chess master, publicist of art, and curator. Using chess as a paradigm, the trajectory of Duchamp’s interest in chess as an object to chess as a process will be traced. This thesis will argue that the exhibition synthesized the “successive moves” of Duchamp’s career as an artist, chess master, publicist of art, and curator while popularizing European avant-garde art in the eyes of the American art public. The Imagery of Chess also served as a precedent for two subsequent performances in which Duchamp participated in the 1960s: his chess performance with Eve Babitz in 1963 at the Pasadena Art Museum and the 1968 Reunion performance with John Cage. While this may be partially true, the entropy inherent to the absurd does not adhere to a mechanically formal posture; rather, the "purposeless wandering", in Eugène Ionesco's case, points, through humor (Ce formidable bordel), toward a longing for meaning, deeply rooted in the human being. This very longing is the crux of Ionesco's humanism. For him suffering (Le Roi se meurt), as the offshoot of the human being's finite condition and the affect that bonds the community, is intertwined with an unexplained feeling of wonderment--an opening to contemplation of the infinite. The merging of suffering and wonderment that suffuses Ionesco's textual and visual works presents the field in which his vision of a metaphysical humanism must find form. Art, in Ionesco's perspective, as the expression of being and the witness of its time (Rhinocéros), can be understood as a redemptive medium, a hope for humanism. Through the interplay of text (plays, reflections and short stories), image (drawings, gouaches and lithographs) and performance, this dissertation explores themes, imagery and structures that reflect Ionesco's paradoxical view on humanism. Thus, in light of interdisciplinary readings, I identify archetypal images recurrent in Ionesco's works and his subversive interpretation of these images as revelatory of the author-painter's inner search for meaning. This quest, which is the unifying principle throughout Ionesco's work, is revealed in themes spanning from the entropy of language (La Cantatrice chauve, Les Chaises) to the sacrificial act of substituting for the other (Maximilien Kolbe). In this ultimate act of testimony, Ionesco depicts Emmanuel Lévinas' ethics wherein the self becomes a "hostage" of the other, vulnerable at the encounter with the other. My analysis of Ionesco's humanism continues beyond his works with a reading of the historicized absurd and humanism in the works of two contemporary diasporic playwrights: Matéi Visniec and Saviana Stanescu. Agriculture is the second largest industry in the State of Oregon and the State places substantial emphasis in its land use planning goals on the preservation of agricultural land. Oregon’s Willamette Valley accounts for the majority of agricultural output with 53% of the valley bottom classified as agricultural land. Additionally, the valley houses 70% of the state's population. The valley was once comprised of extensive wet prairies and abundant riparian forests along the Willamette River floodplain, but native ecosystems have been reduced to a fraction of their original distribution since Euro-American settlement in the mid 1800s. The few wetlands that remain are at high risk to loss and degradation from agricultural activity. Following national wetland conservation policies, Oregon has since attempted to monitor and regulate losses due to disturbance and modification of the State's remaining wetlands through a "no-net-loss" policy aiming to decrease wetland losses and replace disturbed wetlands through mitigation. The National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) was designed to produce detailed maps and status reports of the characteristics and extent of the nation's wetlands and help determine the efficacy of no-net-loss policy implementation on the nation’s wetlands. In some cases, the NWI has been found to have low categorical and spatial accuracy and coarse temporal resolution, with some maps over two decades old. Although Landsat satellite imagery was originally found to lack the needed spatial resolution for classification detail and wetness designation that aerial photography provided, Landsat has 40 years of freely available, high quality annual imagery and should be explored for use in annual wetland change detection. Our objectives were to: (1) Quantify and characterize spatial and ecological trends in annual wetland change through gain, loss, and conversion in the Willamette Valley; (2) Evaluate the effect of the no-net-loss federal wetland conservation policy change enacted in 1990 on trends in net wetland area; and (3) Describe a new methodology that reaches back through the over 40-year Landsat archive to map fine scale wetland and related land-use changes from 1972-2012. We used annual Landsat MSS and TM/ETM+ images from 1972 to 2012 to manually interpret loss, gain, and type conversion of wetland area in the two-year inundation floodplain of the Main-Stem Willamette River using TimeSync, Google Earth, and ArcMap. By creating Tasseled Cap Brightness, Greenness, and Wetness indices for MSS data that visually match TM/ETM+ Tasseled Cap images, we were able to construct a complete and consistent annual time series and utilize the entire Landsat archive. Additionally, with an extended time series, we were able to compare trends of annual net change in wetland area before and after the no-net-loss policy established under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act in 1990. We found that wetlands experienced annual loss, gain, and type conversion across the entire study period. Vegetated wetlands (emergent and riparian wetlands) experienced a 314 ha net loss of wetland area across the 40 year study period whereas non-vegetated wetlands (lacustrine and riverine wetlands) experienced a 393 ha net gain. All wetland types combined saw a 79 ha net increase in wetland area across the full study period. The majority of both gain and loss in the study area was attributed to and from agricultural conversion followed by urban land use. Time series analysis of the rate of change of net wetland area was calculated using the Theil-Sen (TS) Slope estimate analysis. For annual change of wetland area before and after 1990 no-net-loss policy implementations, the rate of annual wetland area lost slowed for riparian wetlands and reversed into trends of annual net gain in area of emergent wetlands. The rate of annual net area gained for lacustrine wetlands was slowed post-policy. Accuracy assessment of land use change polygons in the field was only able to capture 12% of our interpretations due to access restrictions associated with private land. In spite of a low sample size (n=45), overall accuracy of land use classification through wetland change polygons was at 80%. This accuracy increased to 91.1% when land use classes were aggregated to either wetland or upland categories, indicating that our methodology was more accurate at distinguishing between general upland and wetland than finer categorical classes. Literature pertaining to representational gestures, mental imagery, gestural awareness, and self-report data provide the theoretical framework for the study's design and implementation. Data is drawn from observations of two video recorded dyads engaged in everyday conversation, and four audio recorded interviews with each participant individually as they viewed and commented on selected video segments in which they had produced a representational gesture. Findings indicate that participants talked about mental imagery and gestural awareness in ways that were descriptive, explanatory, and self-reflective. They described their mental imagery in i) visual and motor terms, ii) as mental simulations, iii) as textural sensations, and iv) in linguistic metaphors. Participants talked about gestural awareness in terms of i) spontaneity, ii) intentionality, and iii) affective states. Taken altogether, participant comments suggest embodied cognition as a useful framework for analyzing and understanding representational gestures. Further, findings indicate that participant comments served to i) confirm, ii) clarify, and/or iii) expand my analysis, suggesting that participant comments can enhance understanding of mental imagery and gestural awareness in ways that could not be achieved by a researcher's observations and analysis alone. The church of San Marco is recognized as a force which drew the island fragments of primitive Venice into a unified city and empire. This paper will examine the thirteenth-century mosaics by analyzing a variety of factors in the visual environment and the iconography of the mosaics themselves. First, I will examine briefly the nature medieval visuality and the previous architectural and artistic tradition within San Marco, moving then to analysis of the mosaics of the Old Testament cycle, the methods of transfer, and the model from which they were made. Next, I will explore the mosaics of the Cappella Zen and the South Transept as they pertain to the legend of Saint Mark. Last, I will present the historical context of the imagery in thirteenth-century Venice as well as the history of imitation and appropriation at San Marco. Finally, I will examine as a part of the historical context the medieval concept of time and history within the thirteenth-century environment, how it continues with and departs from prior traditions, and what this illustrates about the mosaics and the use of time and historical memory. We have learned that in the natural resources arena, user needs change with different geographies, yet the adaptations made at the local level are useful in expanding the content and services delivered at the statewide level. It is not enough to just provide access to data or documents. Users want access to a wide variety of integrated information resources—digital documents, interactive maps and reports, decision support, high resolution imagery, and access to available expertise. With Oregon Explorer becoming established as a tool for decision-makers and citizens, members of the team are exploring opportunities to use the digital library in classroom settings. Students in Oregon’s K-12 schools and OSU’s undergraduates are groups that we feel could benefit from the natural resources information and tools available. Proposals are being developed to extend Oregon Explorer’s capabilities for use in primary and secondary education. Three singers - an untrained singer, an undergraduate in choral music education, and a graduate student in vocal performance - were asked to perform a melody under a control and three research conditions: metaphoric-image, motion, and dual modality (a combination of metaphoric-image and motion). Participants were randomly assigned to listen to one of the three singers. Participants were asked to rate each condition on tone color, tension, and preference and were directed to ascribe a color to the tone they heard for each condition. Results indicated that respondents could indeed perceive a difference in tone over the different conditions. For the metaphoric-image condition, the singers were asked to "sing the line as if it were yellow." Overall, respondents rated this tone brighter than any others across singers and conditions. The majority of respondents also ascribed the color yellow to the metaphoric-image tone across singers and conditions. Overall data indicated that respondents rated the dual modality condition as darkest and most relaxed while the metaphoric-image condition was rated as brightest and most tense. These results were consistent with the expected pedagogic intent of the conditions as well as the researcher's hypothesis. A chi-square test performed on the color ascription data revealed statistical significance in the expectation of response. The data seem to indicate that specific color ascription to vocal tone is consistent across respondents and conditions. Multispectral imagery was obtained from SPOT for spatial resolution comparison. The light research aircraft employed to collect the aerial video imagery proved to be a versatile and cost effective alternative to traditional remote sensing platforms. The data produced within the study support the project objectives in defining regions of high to low prediction accuracy. Nevertheless, the mechanisms for streamflow generation are poorly understood. Near- stream surface saturation during precipitation events is one of the most iconic, visible indicators of rapid runoff production in upland humid catchments around the world. Despite years of study, we lack understanding of what occurs within the near-stream saturated area, its mixing dynamics and how this affects catchment geochemical- and flow-response dynamics during events. This thesis explores the mechanisms that control near-stream saturated area behavior in a headwater catchment. First, I explore the relation between catchment geochemical response and the flow duration curve (FDC) for the 46-ha Weierbach catchment in Luxembourg across 10 years of runoff monitoring. The shape of the Weierbach FDC suggested a two-phase system, a high-flow, precipitation-driven period and a dry, evapotranspiration-driven, low-flow period. I hypothesized that the two phases were correlated with activation of shallow hillslope and subsurface streamflow sources and that the activation of these sources would be reflected in stream chemistry and surface saturation dynamics. During high-flow periods of the FDC, stream geochemistry was largely unchanging, lacking a dilution effect and appeared a mix of the highly variable soil and groundwater. Thermal infrared (TIR) imagery suggested large surface saturation dynamics at high flows. The geochemical signature of streamflow and soil riparian water during low-flow periods most closely resembled groundwater chemistry and led to increasing base cation concentrations and electrical conductivity. Secondly, to better understand the effect of rain falling on saturated areas and the contribution of rainfall to saturation excess overland flow, I quantified surface saturation dynamics in a near- stream area during rainfall events using high-frequency TIR imagery. During 10 rainfall events across a 34-day period starting December 2013, a total of 161 mm of rainfall elicited 133 mm of runoff at the 6-ha outlet. Surface saturation within a 25-m² thermal infrared imaged area increased from 2 to 20% but was highly variable and weakly correlated to discharge and precipitation. Rainfall onto mapped, near-stream saturated areas accounted for little of the flow generated within a headwater reach. Streamflow isotopic composition at the 6-ha, headwater outlet deflected little throughout the 30-day rainfall period, 0.7 and 1.2 ‰ for δ¹⁸O and δ²H, respectively. Groundwater exfiltration within the saturated area generated nearly all of the streamflow as well the persistent saturation throughout the event. Thirdly, I examined the underlying controls on streamwater chemostasis in a forested, headwater catchment. Thermal infrared imagery was simultaneously used to quantify saturation expansion and groundwater exfiltration hotspots within the headwater reach. Streamflow during a series of rainfall events responded chemostatically, most measured geochemical species (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, SiO₂, Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻ and NO₃⁻) varied little (< 0.5 mg/L), despite discharge increases from 0.2 to 4 L/s. Groundwater levels within the saturated zone increased after an initial 24 mm of event rainfall and remained within 0.05 m of the soil surface throughout the runoff period. TIR imagery identified consistent groundwater exfiltration zones from temperature differences across the event-period in the saturated zone. This suggested that unlike many headwater systems, the alluvial aquifer was well connected to groundwater outside the riparian zone and the mapped seepage area was a focused discharge point for the catchment-scale groundwater flow system. Overall this work suggests that for this catchment, groundwater exfiltration in the near-stream zone strongly controls stream geochemical response as well as the timing, duration and quantity of streamflow generation. Two areas in Nevada, each having distinct differences in structural style were studied. One area, which encompasses a portion of the Battle Mountain Heat Flow High, was studied to determine the relationship between regional and local structural controls and geothermal activity. Four geothermal sites within this area (Winnemucca AMS) were selected and studied in detail. These sites include: 1) Leach Hot Springs, 2) Kyle Hot Springs, 3) Beowawe geothermal area and Buffalo Valley Hot Springs. A second area encompassed by the Reno AMS Sheet was selected for further study in a region dominated by three diverse tectonic styles; these are: 1) the Sierra Nevada Front, 2) the Walker Lane, and 3) basin-and-range structures. Geothermal sites analyzed at site specific scales within the Reno AMS Sheet included Steamboat Hot Springs in the Sierra Nevada Front subprovince, Dixie Valley Hot Springs located in typical basin-and-range terrain and the Brady's-Desert Peak area which is marginal to the Walker Lane. Year: 2008 Western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis var. occidentalis) has been expanding its biogeographic range since the mid-1800's, resulting in decreased biodiversity, altered wildlife habitat, increased soil erosion, reduced stream flows and reduced forage production. The direct causes of western juniper aforestation are unclear but appear to be related to altered fire regimes, over grazing, and climatic shifts. This study seeks to determine how Landsat images combined with Digital Orthoquads (DOQs) can be used to examine the geographic distribution of western juniper. Satellite imagery has yet to be applied to the large scale mapping of western juniper aforestation, resulting in the lack of regional and landscape level monitoring of western juniper range expansion. Remote sensing technologies, when combined with geographical information systems provide potentially valuable tools for monitoring western juniper expansion because of their abilities to assess large scale coverage of scenes, high cost effectiveness, and minimal field crew requirements. The two main objectives of my research are to review and summarize current literature regarding western juniper expansion and explore how remote sensing techniques may be used to quantify the expansion of the species. It was recognized that there is an important need to develop tools that can be applied using remotely sensed data to objectively identify landscape features at multiple spatial scales. The thesis focused on the potential for the use of specific digital image processing techniques to objectively generate multi-scale landscape heterogeneity models from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite imagery. An approach using Difference-of-Gaussian (DoG) scale-space filters was used to process TM satellite data, transformed into the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), to define discrete landscape units across a range of scales. A series of Difference-of-Gaussian filters, with standard deviation (a) pairs of 0.9 and 1.1, 0.8 and 1.2, and 0.7 and 1.3, was applied to TM data. Results were compared against published ecoregion classifications and aerial orthophotography. These comparisons showed that the applied filters failed to accurately define landscape elements at a range of spatial scales. Filter size was found to be highly sensitive to the resolution of the image and object boundaries were maldelineated when complex boundary combinations were encountered. A modified approach using Gaussian/Difference-of-Gaussian or GaussianlLaplacian filter combinations and an alternate approach of watershed segmentation were recommended as potential techniques to test in further study. A disease prediction model for the coastal area of Oregon was built by establishing the relationship between the distribution of disease severity and the environment. Currently available methods of determining the distribution of SNC were analyzed, and the possibility of mapping the disease using Landsat TM satellite images was explored. Two types of regression approaches were used to study the relationship between disease severity and climate, topography, soil and forest stand characteristics. Although both types provided useful information and insight, the multiple regression approach was chosen over the regression tree analysis to build the model, due to its capacity to produce a continuous prediction response. Fog occurrence, precipitation, temperature, elevation and slope aspect, were the variables that contributed to explain most of the disease severity variability. Findings agree with and formalize our previous understanding of the ecology of SNC: cool and wet conditions in summer appear to increase disease severity. When the model was applied to past climate conditions, retrospective predictions suggest that changes in climate in the last two decades could help to explain the observed recent regional increase in SNC disease severity. The resulting model was used to construct a disease prediction map. This map showed an accuracy equivalent to the currently available SNC aerial survey. The prediction model, however, is able to produce a continuous prediction surface, more suitable for testing and appropriate for assisting in disease management and research. A strong relationship between mature stand canopy defoliation and the Landsat TM indices greenness and brightness, indicates that it is possible to use satellite imagery to map SNC. In contrast, young stands showed high variability, most likely due to the relatively high proportion of exposed understory vegetation. The coast commonly sees erosion that can wash away cliffs and undermine structures as well as accretion that can bury houses in sand. However the much more acute risk is the potential for a tsunami triggered by an earthquake in the ocean. This paper examines the factors influencing development along the Oregon coast using satellite imagery and other spatial data. An econometric model for land use change at the pixel level is developed. The scale at which the data (satellite imagery) are collected is different from the scale at which development occurs, leading to spatial correlation among pixels that are geographically close to each other. Estimating a standard probit model in this case leads to parameter estimates that are inconsistent. Incorporating a spatial lag of the dependent variable will account for the spatial autocorrelation but makes maximum likelihood estimation nearly impossible so a Bayesian approach is used instead. A Gibb's sampling algorithm is implemented to estimate the conditional distribution of each parameter in the model, from which parameter estimates can be derived. The Bayesian spatial probit estimation is very computationally intensive however the results indicate that the spatial lag is a crucial part of the model. This approach also allows projections of the spatial pattern of future development, unlike estimation methods that sample the data to remove autocorrelation among observations. The spatial lag model is then used to project future development patterns in several regions along the Oregon coast and explore potential applications of this projection model. In particular, predicted development patterns in the tsunami hazard zone are examined in the Waldport area, on the central coast of Oregon. The Bayesian spatial probit estimation is very computationally intensive however the results indicate that the spatial lag is a crucial part of the model. This approach also allows projections of the spatial pattern of future development, unlike estimation methods that sample the data to remove autocorrelation among observations. The spatial lag model is then used to project future development patterns in several regions along the Oregon coast and explore potential applications of this projection model. In particular, predicted development patterns in the tsunami hazard zone are examined in the Waldport area, on the central coast of Oregon. Close

Using computer vision techniques, Structure from Motion (SfM) and Multi-View Stereo (MVS), it is possible to reconstruct 3D scenes from inexpensive, consumer-grade cameras mounted on a UAS. Despite the increasing popularity of UAS, significant research questions remain regarding the accuracy of UAS-based mapping products. In addition, new tools and methods are required to manage and process the vast amount of data generated by UAS. This research explores several novel approaches to address some of these needs in the field of UAS-based photogrammetry. First, a new approach is developed for supplementing the 3D point clouds derived from UAS imagery with thermal infrared (TIR) imagery. Currently, there are several challenges for reconstructing accurate 3D scenes or point clouds solely from overlapping TIR imagery. For instance, consumer-grade TIR cameras have relatively low resolution and a narrow field view; moreover, such cameras usually generate images with blurred edges and textures. An approach is proposed and evaluated for generating 3D TIR-RGB point clouds utilizing coacquired TIR and RGB images. First, a 3D point cloud is generated using the RGB images; afterward, the TIR data is attributed to the 3D point cloud using a boresight technique. Using the proposed approach, dense point clouds are generated that contain both RGB and TIR information. Such an approach can be beneficial for many thermal mapping and inspection projects, including heat loss inspection, non-destructive testing of structures, and electrical parts inspection for power transmission. Second, the research examines the feasibility of utilizing UAS-based photogrammetry for detecting the change of above-ground pipelines. Since it is inexpensive to fly, UAS are ideal for inspecting, monitoring, and detecting changes in the sites over time. In the researched approach, repetitive UAS flights were conducted to derive 3D digital terrain models in order to detect and measure the movement of pipelines in the scene. The results are compared with displacement measurements taken from conventional ground surveys using real-time kinematic (RTK) global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers and total stations. Thirdly, this study introduces new dense point cloud quality factors (DPQF) to use as proxy indicators for assessing the accuracy of SfM-MVS dense point clouds. Simulated and empirical experiments are used to assess the accuracy of image-based 3D reconstructed models with respect to different data collection and site condition scenarios. Many of the predominantly white, middle-class American women who belly dance proclaim that it is a source of feminist identity and empowerment that brings deeper meaning to their lives. American practitioners of this art form commonly explain that it originated from ritual-based dances of ancient Middle Eastern cultures and regard their participation as a link in a continuous lineage of female dancers. In contrast to the stigmatization and marginalization of public dance performers in the Middle East today, the favorable meaning that American dancers attribute to belly dance may indicate an imagined history of this dance. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted on the West Coast of the United States and Morocco in 2008-2009, I explore American belly dance utilizing theoretical contributions from feminism, Foucauldian discourse analysis, and postmodernism. I argue that an anthropological investigation of American belly dance reveals that its imagery and concepts draw from a larger discourse of Orientalism, connected to a colonial legacy that defines West against East, a process of othering that continues to inform global politics and perpetuates cultural imperialism. But the creative identity construction that American women explore through belly dance is a multi-layered and complex process. I disrupt the binary assumptions of Orientalist thinking, highlighting the heterogeneity and dynamic quality of this dance community and exploring emergent types of American belly dance. Rather than pretending to be the exotic Other, American belly dancers are inventing a new exotic Self. This cultural anthropological study contributes to a greater understanding of identity and society by demonstrating ways that American belly dancers act as agents, creatively and strategically utilizing discursive motifs to accomplish social and personal goals. This technology has the capability of saving lives in search and rescue, fighting wildfires in environmental monitoring, and delivering time dependent medicine in package delivery. These examples demonstrate the potential impact this technology will have on our society. However, it is evident how sensitive UAVs are to the uncertainty of the physical world. In order to properly achieve the full potential of UAVs in these markets, robust and efficient planning algorithms are needed. This thesis addresses the challenge of planning under uncertainty for UAVs. We develop a suite of algorithms that are robust to changes in the environment and build on the key areas of research needed for utilizing UAVs in a commercial setting. Throughout this research three main components emerged: monitoring targets in dynamic environments, exploration with unreliable communication, and risk-aware path planning. We use a realistic fire simulation to test persistent monitoring in an uncertain environment. The fire is generated using the standard program for modeling wildfire, FARSITE. This model was used to validate a weighted-greedy approach to monitoring clustered points of interest (POIs) over traditional methods of tracking a fire front. We implemented the algorithm on a commercial UAV to demonstrate the deployment capability. Dynamic monitoring has limited potential if if coordinated planning is fallible to uncertainty in the world. Uncertain communication can cause critical failures in coordinated planning algorithms. We develop a method for coordinated exploration of a multi-UAV team with unreliable communication and limited battery life. Our results show that the proposed algorithm, which leverages meeting, sacrificing, and relaying behavior, increases the percentage of the environment explored over a frontier-based exploration strategy by up to 18%. We test on teams of up to 8 simulated UAVs and 2 real UAVs able to cope with communication loss and still report improved gains. We demonstrate this work with a pair of custom UAVs in an indoor office environment. We introduce a novel approach to incorporating and addressing uncertainty in planning problems. The proposed Risk-Aware Graph Search (RAGS) algorithm combines traditional deterministic search techniques with risk-aware planning. RAGS is able to trade off the number of future path options, as well as the mean and variance of the associated path cost distributions to make online edge traversal decisions that minimize the risk of executing a high-cost path. The algorithm is compared against existing graphsearch techniques on a set of graphs with randomly assigned edge costs, as well as over a set of graphs with transition costs generated from satellite imagery data. In all cases, RAGS is shown to reduce the probability of executing high-cost paths over A*, D* and a greedy planning approach. High level planning algorithms can be brittle in dynamic conditions where the environment is not modeled perfectly. In developing planners for uncertainty we ensure UAVs will be able to operate in conditions outside the scope of prior techniques. We address the need for robustness in robotic monitoring, coordination, and path planning tasks. In order to properly achieve the full potential of UAVs in these markets, robust and efficient planning algorithms are needed. This thesis addresses the challenge of planning under uncertainty for UAVs. We develop a suite of algorithms that are robust to changes in the environment and build on the key areas of research needed for utilizing UAVs in a commercial setting. Similarly in my paintings I use imagery of birds, beasts, plants and minerals as symbols of the process of transformation, As an artist I view alchemy as a metaphor for the creative process in which there is progressive transformation and refinement of materials, imagery and ultimately consciousness. In alchemy and art alike the creative imagination is the vital agent of change. The alchemists described their labors as an "art". Like the alchemist I attempt to use physical processes as a mirror of inner experience. The materials become "transmuted" from their initially inert state through creative and chaotic struggle into a new synthesis. In my painting I use physical processes of dissolution, evaporation, heat and gravity which remind me of the alchemist's use of the elements of water, air, fire and earth. Humor is an important element of my work. Likewise humor and paradox were not unknown to the alchemist. The texts abound with cryptic riddles meant to befuddle the literal-minded and catalyze intuitive insight. Hermes, the Greek god of wisdom, was the patron of alchemists and also the trickster who could lead his followers on a search to find "fools gold". Anyone who embarks on a potentially quixotic search to find the elixir of immortality should have plenty of humor and humility to sustain themselves! The homunculus, a human-like creature nurtured in a glass vessel was reputed to have been created in the alchemical laboratory. In the novel "Frankenstein" the renegade doctor studies the writings of Paracelsus, the swiss alchemist, before creating his monster. I see the homunculus as a metaphor for modem technology with all its wonders and potential horrors. The series of "Homunculus" sculptures which utilize remnants of household appliances and found objects explores this theme in a whimsical fashion. The alchemist searched for the "gold of the philosophers"-philosophical wisdom. In their pursuit of nature's secrets they combined scientific experimentation with a mystical quest for illumination. Their holistic view of the universe viewed matter and consciousness as a continuum, anticipating recent developments in physics. Alchemy is the ancestor of modem science; perhaps there is something that can be learned from its legacy? I am inspired artistically by the beauty of the texts and their insights into the mysteries of creation. Hopefully my own fanciful creations convey something of the spirit of that tradition. The first part of this essay will discuss the ways in which the Venus Victorieuse was influenced by two earlier works, The Judgment of Paris by Marcantonio Raimondi and Praxiteles’ Aphrodite of Knidos, and also how this image of Venus evokes the allegory of Eve and the notion of her ‘original sin’. Comparing the Venus with these two earlier works will address these influences and how they have informed the meaning behind Renoir’s sculptural interpretation of the mythic symbol of Venus. Stratigraphic profiles of the excavation trenches indicate a buried A horizon overlying what is thought to be a Pre-Pottery Neolithic B cultural component. Construction of a checkdam stopped site erosion and promoted the burial and preservation of a stratified archaeological sequence. The site is located next to a contact between the Lefkara Formation (limestone) and the Upper Pillow Basalts where vitreous chert commonly occurs on the island. Using the geoarchaeological data collected from Ayia Varvara Asprokremnos, satellite imagery and Geographic Information Systems data, a model was built the location of other further Neolithic Quarry sites on the island. In this thesis, selected works by two Wayuu writers, Estercilia Simanca Pushaina and Vicenta Maria Siosi Pino, are analyzed and interpreted in an attempt to unveil some of these behind-the-scenes agents and issues, as well as explore how the stories' classification in the children's literature genre reveals a deep-rooted colonial tendency to infantilize indigenous individuals in contemporary Colombia. Despite the fact that the two authors, both mestizo women who self-identify with the Wayuu indigenous group of northern Colombia, prefer to write short stories that highlight the child and adolescent experience, the implicit themes and the complexity of their texts reject the "children's story" label that has been imposed on their literature. Furthermore, this thesis discusses how the two authors utilize the colonial trope of the Indian-as-child to their advantage by capsizing the imagery, thus rejecting the original power of the symbol and claiming it as their own. The first section of this investigation provides certain contextual specifics related to the cultural and social environment of the Wayuu indigenous group, particularly regarding that experienced by women. The second chapter includes an explanation of the impact a book's genre and its "paratext" may have on the reception and interpretation of these texts, and additionally proposes that the colonial practice of infantilizing indigenous people appears in both the assignment of genre as well as in several extratextual elements surrounding the stories. Chapter three offers an in-depth analysis of five selected pieces of the Wayuu authors' writing and explores how the texts may be read on multiple levels. This close reading reveals several examples of overt criticism towards the hegemonic society as well as displays instances of a more subtle rebellion; both explicit and implicit messages effectively expose and protest the current conditions of abuse, oppression and injustice that continue to anguish the Wayuu people. Yet still, in modern American literature, poetry and prose remain entrenched as a binary, one just as likely to be invoked as fact by writers and scholars as by casual readers. I argue that this binary is not only prevalent but also productive for modern notions of poetry, the root of many formal innovations of the past two centuries, like the prose poem and free verse. Further, for the poets considered in this study, the poetry/prose binary is generative precisely because it is flawed, offering an opportunity for an aesthetic critique. “Antagonistic Cooperation: Prose in American Poetry” uncovers a history of innovative writing that traverses the divide between poetry and prose, writing that critiques the poetry/prose binary by combining conventions of each. These texts reveal how poetry and prose are similar, but they also explore why they seem different and even have different effects. When these writers’ texts examine this binary, they do so not only for aesthetic reasons but also to question the social and political binaries of modern American life—like rich/poor, white/black, male/female, gay/straight, natural/artificial, even living/dead—and these convergences of prose and poetry are a textual “space” each writer creates for representing those explorations. Ultimately, these texts neither choose between poetry and prose nor do they homogenize the two, affirming instead the complex effects that even faulty distinctions may have had historically, and still have, on literature—as on life. By confronting differences without reducing or erasing them, these texts imagine ways to negotiate and overcome modes of ignorance, invisibility, and oppression that may result from these flawed yet powerful dichotomies. Title: Antagonistic Cooperation: Prose in American Poetry Author: LeRud, Elizabeth Year: 2017 Poets and critics have long agreed that any perceived differences between poetry and prose are not essential to those modes: both are comprised of words, both may be arranged typographically in various ways—in lines, in paragraphs of sentences, or otherwise—and both draw freely from the complete range of literary styles and tools, like rhythm, sound patterning, focalization, figures, imagery, narration, or address. Yet still, in modern American literature, poetry and prose remain entrenched as a binary, one just as likely to be invoked as fact by writers and scholars as by casual readers. I argue that this binary is not only prevalent but also productive for modern notions of poetry, the root of many formal innovations of the past two centuries, like the prose poem and free verse. Further, for the poets considered in this study, the poetry/prose binary is generative precisely because it is flawed, offering an opportunity for an aesthetic critique. “Antagonistic Cooperation: Prose in American Poetry” uncovers a history of innovative writing that traverses the divide between poetry and prose, writing that critiques the poetry/prose binary by combining conventions of each. These texts reveal how poetry and prose are similar, but they also explore why they seem different and even have different effects. When these writers’ texts examine this binary, they do so not only for aesthetic reasons but also to question the social and political binaries of modern American life—like rich/poor, white/black, male/female, gay/straight, natural/artificial, even living/dead—and these convergences of prose and poetry are a textual “space” each writer creates for representing those explorations. Ultimately, these texts neither choose between poetry and prose nor do they homogenize the two, affirming instead the complex effects that even faulty distinctions may have had historically, and still have, on literature—as on life. By confronting differences without reducing or erasing them, these texts imagine ways to negotiate and overcome modes of ignorance, invisibility, and oppression that may result from these flawed yet powerful dichotomies. By seeking information that is available on Twitter, individuals are constructing their opinions based on a large source of data from their peers. Laypeople are now influential amplification agents during unfolding crises. Factors that amplify or attenuate perceptions of risk may have far-reaching implications for risk communication research within emerging new social media contexts. In order to explore these factors, we experimentally manipulated content about risk information, specific emotion, and emotional imagery via hypothetical Twitter community event pages and measured risk perceptions, behavioral intentions, and subjective emotions that may accompany the amplification or attenuation of risk through social media. Across three experimental studies, emotion increased the seeking and sharing of information and behavior associated with risk prevention and regulation during crisis communication via experimental Twitter feeds. Gender was a substantial factor that impacted subjective emotion, risk, and behavior. Females demonstrated higher scores than males on the majority of these dependent measures when anger and sadness were induced (Studies 1 and 2) and when only anger was manipulated (Study 3). This attests to the significant impact that gender has for processing emotion in crisis communication. Emotion and risk influenced each other recursively for information seeking and sharing behavior, and emotion content increased subjective emotion compared to information content. Spokesperson strategies effectively reduced negative emotion, information seeking and sharing, information generation, and regulatory action related to the risk event. The present research suggests that evidence-based strategies may be applicable in the domain of social media crisis management. It is imperative that we further investigate the interplay of emotion and information as underlying mechanisms in relation to how information diffusion operates in new social media, as we do not know how perceptions of risk may be generated or altered in this relatively unexplored domain. In this study, I consider visuality as a central, productive part of this problem and seek intensely visual moments within realist novels where realism wages its own struggle with itself as it attempts to navigate its limitations and push forward its possibilities. These moments pause the narrative as they prioritize picture over action. As descriptive moments work to render visual images through words on the printed page, they are fraught with realism’s struggle to use the artifice of fiction as a means for approximating an ostensible reality. Facing this difficulty, realist practitioners take up vastly different strategies. In this project, I investigate why and how visuality is deployed so differently by those who chose to write in this mode. I seek that which is piercing in the nineteenth-century realist novel by locating moments of crisis and tension, both within the plot and also within the strategies of the stories’ delivery. These are moments where the novel becomes troubled by the visual, revealing the potential and limit of the image. In realism, visuality encompasses a broad and varied array of strategies, including instances of enargeia and ekphrasis, passages that seek to evoke a sense of place or milieu through a rich catalog of visual detail, expressive self-renderings in the dialog and inner monologs of the characters, explorations of the embodied act of seeing, and moments where perception fails or visual description exposes itself as insufficient. I consider a small group of canonical authors: George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, Henry James, and Joseph Conrad, who are of critical importance to this genre and to nineteenth century realism, as it moves towards modernism. By examining moments in their novels where descriptive imagery is at its most acute, I seek to explain how moments of intense visuality are crucial nodes where each author, using unique and distinctive methods, negotiates the problem of realist representation.
