It is also a new innovation in the use of the Internet. Software applications written in various programming languages and running on various platforms can use the web services to exchange data over computer networks like the internet in a conceptual manner similar to inter-process communication on a single computer. This evolution of web services is ushering in new usage models; that has the potential to change the way how humans interact with computers. This paper will look at the background, provide a quick snapshot, current trends and in particular, provide analysis of how web services will change the way humans interact with computers and with it, the potential of forever changing the entire computer industry that we know of today. This project aims to develop an image processing application where the key features are provided neither locally nor by a single host. The Yahoo! Widgets Engine is used to design a simple image processing interface where processing operations are mapped to widgets that can be connected together to create more complex operations. Actual data processing occurs remotely via calls to a REST-style Java web service to allow for a non-local and decentralized system. Ever expanding pressures on the health and productivity of our oceans and coasts from threats such as coastal development and climate change are stressing the need to consider the full spectrum of factors, scales, datasets, opinions, and trade-offs for current and future coastal management actions (Guerry 2009; McLeod and Leslie 2009; Rosenberg and Sandifer 2009). Web-based GIS tools including coastal web atlases (CWAs) and geospatial web services are being rapidly developed to assist managers, decision-makers, and scientists with the creation, implementation, and evaluation of coastal management options. Numerous CWAs are incorporating web feature service (WFS) standards into their websites to provide critical datasets on-the-fly for use in spatial decision support tools to assist with management and policy decisions. However, with this increased use of WFSs in CWAs it’s critical to understand how the various components used to create robust WFSs can affect its performance and ability to successfully execute complex spatial queries that are utilized to assess management options. A subset of county land parcel data from Wisconsin was utilized to assess how various software, hardware, and data characteristics can affect WFSs overall robustness, and how these components impact its ability to execute accurate, timely complex spatial queries consistently and their ability to meet the demands of managers, decision-makers, and scientists. Results suggest that WFSs, with varying levels of robustness, can successfully perform accurate, reliable spatial queries on datasets to extract relevant information pertaining to coastal management concerns, which could impact CWAs by increasing their functionality and range of potential applications provided to users. First, Microsoft’s strategy offers all three layers of services such as cloud platform, software as a service (SaaS), and attached services to different sizes of business clients and consumers. While seemingly mundane, this problem is quite challenging when the source of football video is relatively unconstrained, which is the situation we face. Our football videos are collected from a web-service used by more than 13, 000 high school, college, and professional football teams. The videos display huge variation in camera viewpoint, lighting conditions, football field properties, camera work, among many other factors. These factors taken together make standard off-the-shelf computer vision algorithms ineffective. The main contribution of this thesis is to design and evaluate two novel approaches for the offense/defense classification problem from raw video, which make minimal assumptions about the video properties. Our empirical evaluation on approximately 1200 videos of football plays from 10 diverse games validate the effectiveness of the approaches and highlight their differences. The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to understand the experiences of older students' use of web-based student services in a community college setting. For the purpose of this study the term "older student" was defined as people born between the years 1943 and 1960. This group of people, often described as the Baby Boomer generation, would not have had access to computer technologies had they gone to college during their adolescent years. Web-based student services was defined as the range of student services which are placed online, allowing students to access information and services without needing to see someone in-person. There were three major reasons for this study: (a) the increase in the development and use of online student services, (b) the increase of older students in higher education, and (c) further need to understand the unique experiences of older students in higher education. The case study design used an interpretive social science philosophical approach. The study was conducted at a large multi-campus community college in a metropolitan area located in the Northwest. A combination of survey, interviews, institutional data, and student-journals were used to answer the following research questions: (a) What is the experience of older students with web-based technology in a community college setting, (b) How do the older students' overall experiences and use of web-based services affect their community college experience, and (c) How might older students' background and experiences with web-based student services inform community college policy and practice? Close examination of data revealed several major themes of older students' experiences with online student services. These themes are: • Student Assumptions • Self-Motivation • Influence of Prior Work Experiences • User Preferences • How and What Online Services are Used • User Suggestions When these themes are taken into consideration with related literature on the digital divide, technology use in student affairs, older student experiences in the community college, and older students' use of technology, this study offers implications for community college leaders and practitioners in the student affairs and technology development. The implications of this study may impact online service development, assessment of computer literacy, program enhancement or development, and technical changes. For the purpose of this study the term "older student" was defined as people born between the years 1943 and 1960. This group of people, often described as the Baby Boomer generation, would not have had access to computer technologies had they gone to college during their adolescent years. Web-based student services was defined as the range of student services which are placed online, allowing students to access information and services without needing to see someone in-person. There were three major reasons for this study: (a) the increase in the development and use of online student services, (b) the increase of older students in higher education, and (c) further need to understand the unique experiences of older students in higher education. The case study design used an interpretive social science philosophical approach. The study was conducted at a large multi-campus community college in a metropolitan area located in the Northwest. A combination of survey, interviews, institutional data, and student-journals were used to answer the following research questions: (a) What is the experience of older students with web-based technology in a community college setting, (b) How do the older students' overall experiences and use of web-based services affect their community college experience, and (c) How might older students' background and experiences with web-based student services inform community college policy and practice? Close examination of data revealed several major themes of older students' experiences with online student services. These themes are: • Student Assumptions • Self-Motivation • Influence of Prior Work Experiences • User Preferences • How and What Online Services are Used • User Suggestions When these themes are taken into consideration with related literature on the digital divide, technology use in student affairs, older student experiences in the community college, and older students' use of technology, this study offers implications for community college leaders and practitioners in the student affairs and technology development. The implications of this study may impact online service development, assessment of computer literacy, program enhancement or development, and technical changes. Close

Web clusters are one solution to this need for highperformance, highly available web server systems. We are interested in load distribution techniques, specifically Layer-7 algorithms that are content-aware. Layer- 7 algorithms allow distribution control based on the specific content requested, which is advantageous for a system that offers highly heterogenous services. We examine the performance of the Client Aware Policy (CAP) on a Linux/Apache web cluster consisting of a single web switch that directs requests to a pool of dual-processor SMP nodes. We show that the performance advantage of CAP over simple algorithms such as random and round-robin is as high as 29% on our testbed consisting of a mixture of static and dynamic content. Under heavily loaded conditions however, the performance decreases to the level of random distribution. In studying SMP vs. uniprocessor performance using the same number of processors with CAP distribution, we find that SMP dual-processor nodes under moderate workload levels provide equivalent throughput as the same number of CPU’s in a uniprocessor cluster. As workload increases to a heavily loaded state however, the SMP cluster shows reduced throughput compared to a cluster using uniprocessor nodes. We show that the web cluster’s maximum throughput increases linearly with the addition of more nodes to the server pool. We conclude that CAP is advantageous over random or round-robin distribution under certain conditions for highly dynamic workloads, and suggest some future enhancements that may improve its performance.
