The Clackamas Basin Atlas, funded by the Environmental Protection Agency and coordinated by Metro, provides a basin-wide perspective on the entire area. Metro followed up this effort with a landscape study focused on Rock and Richardson Creeks. Pacific Rivers Council and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) have done fish surveys and analyzed the health of aquatic life. During the development of this assessment Clackamas County was in the midst of completing a stormwater management plan for the proposed urban areas. This assessment summarizes the findings of these and several other studies, and provides a context for moving forward with creek protection and restoration. Because of the paucity of information and concerns of declining lamprey population in the Pacific Northwest, the Applegate River Watershed Council (ARWC) with the Medford District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) collaborated to study lamprey populations in the Applegate River watershed of southwest Oregon (Close et al. 1995, Larson & Belchik 1998, Kostow 2002). The objectives of the study included: (1) Identifying species composition; (2) determining the distribution of lamprey species; and (3) relating the distribution of lamprey ammocoetes (juveniles or larvae) to physical stream characteristics. This paper summarizes the life histories of the two most common lamprey species in the Oregon, the Pacific (Lampetra tridentata) and Western Brook (Lampetra richardsoni), details the methods of study, reports the results and summarizes the findings. Also included are recommendations and suggestions for future lamprey work in the Applegate basin. Issues and key questions, developed by the federal agencies, ARWC, and landowners guide the content of this analysis. Key issues focus the assessment on the principle concerns of the Slate Creek Watershed. This watershed assessment is grouped into three main categories: Cultural and Social environment, Terrestrial environment, and the Aquatic environment. The cultural and social environment examines the historic and current human uses in the watershed. The terrestrial environment focuses on vegetation patterns, wildlife habitat and fire/fuel conditions. Fish habitat conditions, water quality and riparian zone function are discussed in the aquatic environment. Anadromous fish species in the Clackamas basin include spring and fall chinook, coho salmon, winter steelhead, summer steelhead (non-native), migratory cutthroat trout and lamprey. Clear and Foster Creeks are utilized by fall chinook, winter steelhead and coho salmon. The assessment generally followed the framework described in the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board’s Watershed Assessment Manual (WPN, 1999). The assessment focused on the following components: Channel habitat classification and modification; hydrology and water use; riparian/wetlands; sediment sources; water quality; fisheries; and wildlife and upland vegetation. Generally the approach builds on existing information, and enhances this information with aerial photo interpretation and limited field checking. Additional fieldwork was used to verify channel habitat types and to characterize fish habitat condition. GIS was used as a critical assessment tool and method of displaying results. Title: Clear and Foster Creek Watershed Assessment Abstract -- A watershed assessment was completed in the Clear and Foster Creek watersheds to evaluate existing conditions and make recommendations to protect or enhance watershed natural resources. Clear and Foster Creek are tributaries to the Clackamas River below any major dams on the system; consequently these tributaries are positioned favorably to contribute to recovery of important anadromous fish populations. For this reason, the goal of the basin stakeholders working in partnership with the CRBC was to create a truly comprehensive assessment and prioritization of public and private barriers.
