  Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Proceedings of a Workshop on Interactive Graphics for Transportation Planners Author: Dueker, Kenneth, Roberts, Ross Year: 1984 The workshop attracted transportation planners from transit and regional planning agencies, consulting firms, and local governments. It explored the use of interactive graphics coupled with multi-modal transportation planning. Several key aspects of the use of interactive graphics were explored in panel discussions and demonstration workshop sessions. These aspects included the evolution of interactive graphics technology, the structured application of this technology in implementation, the operational environment, impacts on planning agencies and future applications of this technology. The demonstration of applications was made possible by use of Metro's EMME/2 system. Metro is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Portland area. Metro is the first planning jurisdiction in the United States to use EMME/2, so Metro's experience with the implementation of the system is particularly valuable. After acquiring the Urban Transportation Planning System (UTPS) in 1977, Metro began to look for new technology to better serve their regional transportation planning needs. In 1983, Metro acquired the EMME/2 system. Metro personnel who have used the system on a day-to-day basis have valuable insight into the functional aspects of this new technology. Using the Current Population Survey and its Food Security Supplement for 2002-2004, this analysis examines food insecurity and hunger in the Northwest. First comparing to earlier analyses, we document decreasing food insecurity and hunger for Oregon and Washington as a whole. Consolidating those two states and Idaho to describe the Northwest region, non-metro disadvantages for specific socioeconomic characteristics become apparent. Compared to metro locations, non-metro food insecurity is higher among unemployed households as well as among households without an unemployed adult. Moreover, non-metro food insecurity is higher than the metro rate among households with a full-year full-time worker, households with women working in administrative support/ sales occupations, and 2-adult households with children. We hypothesize that in non-metro areas many of the employed women whose families are food insecure are part of 2-adult households with children, and that they, or their partner/spouse, are often full-year full-time employed. Hispanic food insecurity rates are dramatically higher than rates for non-Hispanics, regardless of location. Further exploration of specific occupations indicates that workers in both metro and non-metro food insecure households are concentrated, ironically, in food-preparing and food-serving occupations. Metro acquired the lands comprising the KWNA between 2000 and 2012 with funds from two voterapproved open space bond measures. Since 2000, Metro has sought to advance natural area restoration at the site, focusing on the suppression of non-native pasture weeds and planting of native trees and shrubs in higher parts of the floodplain and its edges. Most uplands in Metro ownership have been maintained in agriculture through leased partnerships with local farmers. Metro and its partners have observed the effects of persistent flooding at the site, which began prior to Metro’s acquisition of the property. Most notable has been the decline of the once abundant Geyer willow stand, a prominent and valued feature of the site. In February 2014, Metro convened several key scientists familiar with the wetland, and its underlying Labish soil, to discuss what was known about the Killin Wetlands and possible next steps in advancing restoration there. That discussion focused on the subsidence of organic soils, caused by artificial drainage, and led to the recommendation that a review of regional peat soil wetlands would be an important step in developing an informed plan for preserving and restoring Killin Wetlands.
