Year: 1978 Lineament analysis as an exploration technique for geothermal energy using multi-scale, multi-format imagery and geophysical data is investigated and evaluated. Two areas in Nevada, each having distinct differences in structural style were studied. One area, which encompasses a portion of the Battle Mountain Heat Flow High, was studied to determine the relationship between regional and local structural controls and geothermal activity. Four geothermal sites within this area (Winnemucca AMS) were selected and studied in detail. These sites include: 1) Leach Hot Springs, 2) Kyle Hot Springs, 3) Beowawe geothermal area and Buffalo Valley Hot Springs. A second area encompassed by the Reno AMS Sheet was selected for further study in a region dominated by three diverse tectonic styles; these are: 1) the Sierra Nevada Front, 2) the Walker Lane, and 3) basin-and-range structures. Geothermal sites analyzed at site specific scales within the Reno AMS Sheet included Steamboat Hot Springs in the Sierra Nevada Front subprovince, Dixie Valley Hot Springs located in typical basin-and-range terrain and the Brady's-Desert Peak area which is marginal to the Walker Lane. Data products employed included LANDSAT imagery, SKYLAB photography, gravity, and aeromagnetic maps. The objective of this report is to provide a representative estimate of the monthly natural flow of the Upper Klamath River. Such an estimate is of the natural flow that would typically have occurred without the water-resources developments in the Upper Klamath Basin. A water-budget assessment was used in the determination of the natural flows. The assessment includes results from an evaluation of present-day irrigation depletions, and losses from reclaimed marshland, that have changed the natural inflow to, and resulting natural outfall from, Upper Klamath Lake. Also evaluated were losses to the natural inflow that would have been incurred due to pre-development marshland and evaporation associated with Upper Klamath Lake. The natural outfall from the lake comprised the natural flow of the Link River at Klamath Falls and also the consequent natural inflow to Lower Klamath Lake. Therefore, a similar evaluation was also completed for Lower Klamath Lake to estimate the natural flow of the Klamath River at Keno. The water-budget assessment was designed to simulate each lake as a natural water body within a stream-connected two-lake system. Much of the assessment was completed using Excel. Year: 2015 To better understand representational gestures used in everyday talk, this study explores the ways participants talk about their own mental imagery and gestural awareness, and how their comments affect analysis. Literature pertaining to representational gestures, mental imagery, gestural awareness, and self-report data provide the theoretical framework for the study's design and implementation. Data is drawn from observations of two video recorded dyads engaged in everyday conversation, and four audio recorded interviews with each participant individually as they viewed and commented on selected video segments in which they had produced a representational gesture. Findings indicate that participants talked about mental imagery and gestural awareness in ways that were descriptive, explanatory, and self-reflective. They described their mental imagery in i) visual and motor terms, ii) as mental simulations, iii) as textural sensations, and iv) in linguistic metaphors. Participants talked about gestural awareness in terms of i) spontaneity, ii) intentionality, and iii) affective states. Taken altogether, participant comments suggest embodied cognition as a useful framework for analyzing and understanding representational gestures. Further, findings indicate that participant comments served to i) confirm, ii) clarify, and/or iii) expand my analysis, suggesting that participant comments can enhance understanding of mental imagery and gestural awareness in ways that could not be achieved by a researcher's observations and analysis alone. Many of the predominantly white, middle-class American women who belly dance proclaim that it is a source of feminist identity and empowerment that brings deeper meaning to their lives. American practitioners of this art form commonly explain that it originated from ritual-based dances of ancient Middle Eastern cultures and regard their participation as a link in a continuous lineage of female dancers. In contrast to the stigmatization and marginalization of public dance performers in the Middle East today, the favorable meaning that American dancers attribute to belly dance may indicate an imagined history of this dance. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted on the West Coast of the United States and Morocco in 2008-2009, I explore American belly dance utilizing theoretical contributions from feminism, Foucauldian discourse analysis, and postmodernism. I argue that an anthropological investigation of American belly dance reveals that its imagery and concepts draw from a larger discourse of Orientalism, connected to a colonial legacy that defines West against East, a process of othering that continues to inform global politics and perpetuates cultural imperialism. But the creative identity construction that American women explore through belly dance is a multi-layered and complex process. I disrupt the binary assumptions of Orientalist thinking, highlighting the heterogeneity and dynamic quality of this dance community and exploring emergent types of American belly dance. Rather than pretending to be the exotic Other, American belly dancers are inventing a new exotic Self. This cultural anthropological study contributes to a greater understanding of identity and society by demonstrating ways that American belly dancers act as agents, creatively and strategically utilizing discursive motifs to accomplish social and personal goals. Year: 2016 The way we read and interpret literature is frequently influenced by factors that operate beyond the scope of the average reader's awareness. In this thesis, selected works by two Wayuu writers, Estercilia Simanca Pushaina and Vicenta Maria Siosi Pino, are analyzed and interpreted in an attempt to unveil some of these behind-the-scenes agents and issues, as well as explore how the stories' classification in the children's literature genre reveals a deep-rooted colonial tendency to infantilize indigenous individuals in contemporary Colombia. Despite the fact that the two authors, both mestizo women who self-identify with the Wayuu indigenous group of northern Colombia, prefer to write short stories that highlight the child and adolescent experience, the implicit themes and the complexity of their texts reject the "children's story" label that has been imposed on their literature. Furthermore, this thesis discusses how the two authors utilize the colonial trope of the Indian-as-child to their advantage by capsizing the imagery, thus rejecting the original power of the symbol and claiming it as their own. The first section of this investigation provides certain contextual specifics related to the cultural and social environment of the Wayuu indigenous group, particularly regarding that experienced by women. The second chapter includes an explanation of the impact a book's genre and its "paratext" may have on the reception and interpretation of these texts, and additionally proposes that the colonial practice of infantilizing indigenous people appears in both the assignment of genre as well as in several extratextual elements surrounding the stories. Chapter three offers an in-depth analysis of five selected pieces of the Wayuu authors' writing and explores how the texts may be read on multiple levels. This close reading reveals several examples of overt criticism towards the hegemonic society as well as displays instances of a more subtle rebellion; both explicit and implicit messages effectively expose and protest the current conditions of abuse, oppression and injustice that continue to anguish the Wayuu people. Pierre-­‐Auguste Renoir was an Impressionist artist who dedicated the last three decades of his life primarily to the depiction of the female nude. His representation of the nude, both in painting and sculpture, was monumental and idealized, and he often created images of women that were mythic and evocative of the notion that woman belongs to the ‘natural sphere.’ Renoir’s sculpture, the Venus Victorieuse is an idealized and indeed mythic image that epitomizes the idea of woman as a seducer, animalistic by nature and inherently amoral. The first part of this essay will discuss the ways in which the Venus Victorieuse was influenced by two earlier works, The Judgment of Paris by Marcantonio Raimondi and Praxiteles’ Aphrodite of Knidos, and also how this image of Venus evokes the allegory of Eve and the notion of her ‘original sin’. Comparing the Venus with these two earlier works will address these influences and how they have informed the meaning behind Renoir’s sculptural interpretation of the mythic symbol of Venus. Oregon Explorer (www.oregonexplorer.info), a natural resources digital library developed by Oregon State University Libraries and the Institute for Natural Resources, was created for Oregon’s natural resource decision-makers to promote informed and streamlined public and private decision-making. Examples of projects and successes of the Oregon Explorer include a basin portal for the Umpqua River, developed in conjunction with the Partnership for Umpqua Rivers, as well as topic portals, such as the Land Use Explorer launched in October 2007 to inform Oregonians about land use history and current issues. We have learned that in the natural resources arena, user needs change with different geographies, yet the adaptations made at the local level are useful in expanding the content and services delivered at the statewide level. It is not enough to just provide access to data or documents. Users want access to a wide variety of integrated information resources—digital documents, interactive maps and reports, decision support, high resolution imagery, and access to available expertise. With Oregon Explorer becoming established as a tool for decision-makers and citizens, members of the team are exploring opportunities to use the digital library in classroom settings. Students in Oregon’s K-12 schools and OSU’s undergraduates are groups that we feel could benefit from the natural resources information and tools available. Proposals are being developed to extend Oregon Explorer’s capabilities for use in primary and secondary education. Oregon Explorer is being used in several university classrooms and will become more integrated as the content and tools grow and as strategies for further incorporation are developed. Year: 2008 Western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis var. occidentalis) has been expanding its biogeographic range since the mid-1800's, resulting in decreased biodiversity, altered wildlife habitat, increased soil erosion, reduced stream flows and reduced forage production. The direct causes of western juniper aforestation are unclear but appear to be related to altered fire regimes, over grazing, and climatic shifts. This study seeks to determine how Landsat images combined with Digital Orthoquads (DOQs) can be used to examine the geographic distribution of western juniper. Satellite imagery has yet to be applied to the large scale mapping of western juniper aforestation, resulting in the lack of regional and landscape level monitoring of western juniper range expansion. Remote sensing technologies, when combined with geographical information systems provide potentially valuable tools for monitoring western juniper expansion because of their abilities to assess large scale coverage of scenes, high cost effectiveness, and minimal field crew requirements. The two main objectives of my research are to review and summarize current literature regarding western juniper expansion and explore how remote sensing techniques may be used to quantify the expansion of the species. Fourteen soil map units, largely developed on Holocene colluvium, were identified. Stratigraphic profiles of the excavation trenches indicate a buried A horizon overlying what is thought to be a Pre-Pottery Neolithic B cultural component. Construction of a checkdam stopped site erosion and promoted the burial and preservation of a stratified archaeological sequence. The site is located next to a contact between the Lefkara Formation (limestone) and the Upper Pillow Basalts where vitreous chert commonly occurs on the island. This thesis considered current approaches to describing landscape pattern, identified scale issues associated with defining objects, and explored techniques to reliably group elements based on land cover as represented by satellite imagery. It was recognized that there is an important need to develop tools that can be applied using remotely sensed data to objectively identify landscape features at multiple spatial scales. The thesis focused on the potential for the use of specific digital image processing techniques to objectively generate multi-scale landscape heterogeneity models from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite imagery. An approach using Difference-of-Gaussian (DoG) scale-space filters was used to process TM satellite data, transformed into the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), to define discrete landscape units across a range of scales. A series of Difference-of-Gaussian filters, with standard deviation (a) pairs of 0.9 and 1.1, 0.8 and 1.2, and 0.7 and 1.3, was applied to TM data. Results were compared against published ecoregion classifications and aerial orthophotography. These comparisons showed that the applied filters failed to accurately define landscape elements at a range of spatial scales. Filter size was found to be highly sensitive to the resolution of the image and object boundaries were maldelineated when complex boundary combinations were encountered. A modified approach using Gaussian/Difference-of-Gaussian or GaussianlLaplacian filter combinations and an alternate approach of watershed segmentation were recommended as potential techniques to test in further study.
