Prairie-oak ecosystems in the Willamette Valley, Oregon have experienced habitat loss and degradation; most of these ecosystems are fragmented into smaller patches. Prairie-oak butterfly species, in the Willamette Valley, have decreased dramatically due to loss or degradation of habitat. More research is needed on sustaining the populations of butterflies in prairie-oak ecosystems. The purpose of my study was to examine the role prairie-oak habitats have in structuring butterfly communities in the Willamette Valley. My objectives were to: (1) assess how butterfly community structure and species composition (density, abundance, and species richness) varies along an oak canopy cover gradient in order to understand the role of habitat type in structuring butterfly communities in prairie-oak ecosystems; (2) characterize community composition of nectar resources and environmental variables known to be important for butterfly species. I also investigated temporal and structural relationships between butterfly and flower communities. I found that butterfly abundance and density were greater (p < 0.02) in prairies than in oak savannas or oak woodlands; however, species richness did not differ among habitats (p = 0.54). Ordination of prairie-oak habitats in butterfly species space with a joint plot overlay of environmental variables revealed several strong correlations; butterfly community structure was negatively correlated with litter and oak canopy cover and positively correlated to vegetation cover. The prairie, oak savanna, and oak woodland habitat types differed in nectar species community structure, though this difference was small. Non-native species were some of the most abundant flowers species found in all stands. Butterfly communities were positively related to flower communities. I detected significant seasonal patterns among the habitat types in butterfly and flower communities. Prairies appear to be the most important habitat for native butterfly populations compared to oak savanna and oak woodlands. Flowers were most prevalent in prairies and prairies had the highest percentage of native flower species; the prevalence of non-native flower species was greatest in oak woodlands. My study may represent a short-term community transition as a result of management or it may represent a more permanent community. Further study is needed to understand the effects of different management strategies for habitat restoration and the presence of non-native flower species on butterflies in prairie-oak ecosystems in the Willamette Valley. I reviewed existing published work from 1989 to 2009 and found that only six of 303 studies separated the effects of habitat loss from fragmentation. I provide a synthesis of the current landscape, behavioral, and pollination ecology literature in order to present preliminary multiple working hypotheses to explain how these two landscape processes might independently influence pollination dynamics (Chapter 2). Despite the potential importance of independent effects of habitat fragmentation, effects on pollination remain largely untested. Studies designed to disentangle the independent effects of habitat loss and fragmentation are essential for gaining insight into landscape-mediated pollination declines. Fragmentation, however, may also negatively affect biodiversity for those species that exhibit behavioral responses to changes in habitat configuration. Such behavioral changes include movement, which is influenced by subdividing and isolating habitats through which animals prefer to travel. Ecosystem services that depend on the ability of animals to move through the landscape could be affected by changes in habitat configuration. Pollination is one such process because access of pollinators to flowers is often the key determinant of plant reproductive success. Yet, relatively little is known about how forest fragmentation may influence the flow of pollen carried by forest-dwelling pollinators, such as hummingbirds. I evaluate how changes in the distribution of pollinators produced by habitat fragmentation in southern Costa Rica affects a pollination web occupied by a generalist tropical pollinator, the green hermit hummingbird (Phaethornis guy). I used radio-telemetry to measure patterns of space use by green hermits living in forested areas with different levels of fragmentation. I first characterize patterns of space use by green hermits at three scales: point, path and home range. I found that green hermits have marked preference for locations in forested areas with high density of Heliconia plants and canopy cover; prefer paths close to streams that minimize crossing large stretches of non-forested matrix; and establish their home ranges in areas with high forest amount. In addition, home range area was negatively related to the amount of forest within it and positively related to fragmentation per se. Average resource density within the home range appeared to be unrelated to the area covered by the green hermits. My observations indicate that while the presence of green hermits in an area is mainly determined by the amount of forest available, the way they move through a landscape will be strongly affected by habitat configuration. In this context, pollen transfer by green hermits will be limited by the presence of open, non-forested areas owing to matrix avoidance. In landscapes with small discontinuous patches, the total area covered by an individual green hermit is likely to be small so I hypothesize that the genetic variability of pollen it transports may be diminished. I also assess the effectiveness of a tool commonly used to study the effect of habitat fragmentation on animal movement: translocation experiments. Such experiments are purported to have important advantages of being time efficient and standardizing across individuals the ‘motivation’ to move. Yet, we lack tests of whether movement behavior of translocated birds reflects natural behavior of unmanipulated birds. I compared the routine movement behavior of green hermits to that of experimentally translocated individuals. Behaviors documented during translocation experiments reflected those observed during routine movements. Both translocated and non-translocated birds showed similar levels of preference for mature tropical forest at the point level and avoided moving across non-forested matrix while selecting streams as movement corridors at the path level. Movement rates (distance covered per unit time) were generally higher during translocation experiments. However, the negative influence of forest cover on movement rates was proportionately similar in translocation and routine movement treatments. My results show that movement behavior of birds during translocation experiments is similar to natural movement behavior of birds. Therefore, translocation experiments may be reliable tools to address effects of landscape structure on animal movement. Short-term additions of N that exceed ecosystem demands often increase dissolved nitrate fluxes and decrease soil pH, which can stimulate soil Ca loss. However, the long-term effects of high N supply on ecosystem Ca availability are more difficult to determine, and may depend on the Ca content of bedrock and mineral soils. To address this, we examined major and trace element concentrations and ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr ratios that trace Ca sources in precipitation, foliage, soil pools, and bedrock at 24 forested sites in the Oregon Coast Range having a wide, natural range of soil N (0.16 - 0.97 % N, 0-10 cm) on contrasting basaltic and sedimentary bedrock. Using a suite of 17 site properties, we also evaluated whether soil N variation across sites was related to the five major state-factors of soil and ecosystem development: climate, organisms, topography, parent material, and time. We found that as soil N increased across sites, its ¹⁵N/¹⁴N ratio declined towards atmospheric values, suggesting that soil N variation reflects a biotic legacy of symbiotic N fixation inputs. In contrast, soil N variation was unrelated to 17 other metrics of soil forming factors that represented climate (mean annual precipitation, mean annual temperature, and distance from the coast), topography (slope, soil depth, and abundance of coarse rock fragments), parent material (within bedrock type bulk and 1 M HNO₃ leachable rock Ca chemistry), and proxies of soil age (Hurst's redness rating, effective cation exchange capacity, Ca in non-exchangeable soil residues, chemical index of alteration, weathering index of Parker, Ca in coarse soil fragments, and soil Ca loss relative to bedrock). These analyses highlight symbiotic N-fixing red alder as a keystone organismal state-factor that produces a wide range of soil N accumulation in coastal Oregon forests. Strontium isotopes (⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr) and other geochemical analyses indicate that long-term Ca sources in foliage and exchangeable soil pools in Oregon Coast Range forests depend on an interactive effect between N availability and bedrock. Basaltic rocks contained nearly 20-times more Ca than sedimentary rocks across our sites, and this difference was reflected in Sr-isotope partitioning of base cation sources. Atmospheric sources dominated plant and soil pools in forests overlying Ca-poor sedimentary rock, regardless of variation in soil N, indicating extremely limited capacity of weathering to support forest Ca demands. In contrast, forests overlying basaltic rock obtained as much as 80% of Ca from rock weathering in low N sites, yet relied to a greater extent on atmospheric Ca as soil N increased, with less than 10% of Ca from rock weathering at sites with the highest soil N. Surprisingly, differences in fresh rock Ca content and base cation sources between sedimentary and basaltic sites was not reflected in ecosystem Ca availability, and instead increasing soil N caused similar declines in foliar and exchangeable Ca across both rock types. This illustrates that nutrient pool sizes do not necessarily reflect long-term nutrient supply, and highlights how coupled biogeochemical cycles within ecosystems can regulate nutrient loss and supply to biota. Broadly, our results highlight how interactions between biological and geologic factors can influence base cation sources in forest ecosystems. The sustainability of base cation supplies to forests may therefore depend greatly on variation in bedrock weathering at low N sites, yet converge to depend on atmospheric inputs in sites that receive high N loading from biological fixation or anthropogenic deposition. Year: 2010 Multiple global changes such as timber harvesting in areas not previously disturbed by cutting and climate change will undoubtedly affect the composition and spatial distribution of boreal forests, which will, in turn, affect the ability of these forests to retain carbon and maintain biodiversity. To predict future states of the boreal forest reliably, it is necessary to understand the complex interactions among forest regenerative processes (succession), natural disturbances (e.g., fire, wind, and insects), and anthropogenic disturbances (e.g., timber harvest). We used a landscape succession and disturbance model (LANDIS-II) to study the relative effects of climate change, timber harvesting, and insect outbreaks on forest composition, biomass (carbon), and landscape pattern in south-central Siberia. We found that most response variables were more strongly influenced by timber harvest and insect outbreaks than by the direct effects of climate change. Direct climate effects generally increased tree productivity and modified probability of establishment, but indirect effects on the fire regime generally counteracted the direct effects of climate on forest composition. Harvest and insects significantly changed forest composition, reduced living aboveground biomass, and increased forest fragmentation. We concluded that: (1) Global change is likely to significantly change forest composition of south-central Siberian landscapes, with some changes taking ecosystems outside the historic range of variability. To predict future states of the boreal forest reliably, it is necessary to understand the complex interactions among forest regenerative processes (succession), natural disturbances (e.g., fire, wind, and insects), and anthropogenic disturbances (e.g., timber harvest). We used a landscape succession and disturbance model (LANDIS-II) to study the relative effects of climate change, timber harvesting, and insect outbreaks on forest composition, biomass (carbon), and landscape pattern in south-central Siberia. We found that most response variables were more strongly influenced by timber harvest and insect outbreaks than by the direct effects of climate change. Direct climate effects generally increased tree productivity and modified probability of establishment, but indirect effects on the fire regime generally counteracted the direct effects of climate on forest composition. Harvest and insects significantly changed forest composition, reduced living aboveground biomass, and increased forest fragmentation. We concluded that: (1) Global change is likely to significantly change forest composition of south-central Siberian landscapes, with some changes taking ecosystems outside the historic range of variability. Two experimental sites (Lookout and Carpenter) were chosen in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, located in the western Cascade Range of Oregon, at elevations of approximately 1500 meters. Although nitrification potential rates (NPRs) between sites were not significantly different (P=0.544), variation was observed both within and between sites for specific vegetation types. NPRs were significantly lower in forest (F) soil samples than in meadow (M) soil samples, averaging 5 and 2% of meadow NPRs at Lookout and Carpenter, respectively. In meadow soil samples, most probable number (MPN) population densities of ammonia-oxidizers ranged from 0.6 to 2.6 x 10⁴ cells gram⁻¹ of oven dry soil and 0.9 x 10³ to 1.1 x 10⁵ cells g⁻¹ OD soil at Lookout and Carpenter, respectively. In forest soil samples, population densities ranged from undetectable to 1.1 x 10⁴ cells g⁻¹ OD soil, and 0.9 x 10² to 2.3 x 10³ cells g⁻¹ OD soil at Lookout and Carpenter, respectively. Microbial community DNA was amplified using primers to the ammonia monooxygenase subunit A. Terminal restriction fragments polymorphism analysis with three different restriction enzymes (CfoI, TaqI, and AluI) revealed community profiles dominated by Nitrosospira species. One fragment from CfoI (66 bp) and one fragment from AluI (392-bp) were prominent in 47 soil samples from both sites, and represented between 32 to 100% of the Genescan fragment analyses of PCR products. A full length fragment from AluI digests (491-bp), and three fragments from CfoI (68, 100, and 135- bp) were found sporadically in fewer soil sample T-RFLPs, and within those samples represented smaller percentages of total peak areas. The CfoI 135-bp fragment length was associated primarily with M and meadow/forest (M/F) soils where it was observed in approximately 58 and 100% of the respective transect locations. Eight isolates recovered from soil samples were analyzed using the same molecular methods as the field samples. The T-RFLP patterns of the isolates corresponded with many of those found in the community fingerprints. Four unique amoA sequences were identified among these isolates, including one that possessed the dominant T-RFLP amoA fingerprint in soil samples. This sequence shared 99.8% similarity with Nitrosospira sp. Ka4, a cluster 4 ammonia oxidizer isolated in Norway. Sequence analysis phylogenetically associated the other three isolates (with unique amoA sequences) near Nitrosospira sp. Nsp 1 and Nitrosospira briensis, both cluster 3 ammonia oxidizers. Sagebrush-obligate species are experiencing population declines as a result of these ecosystem changes. To effectively conserve this ecosystem, it is essential to understand patterns of abundance and stress of the inhabitants at the landscape-level. Abundance of species across their geographic range is not uniform. Instead, abundance often decreases towards the periphery of the range where resources and habitat conditions become less suitable. In addition, stress in populations closer to the periphery of the range may be expressed in condition-dependent traits where suboptimal environmental conditions occur. Fluctuating asymmetry, random deviations from perfect symmetry in bilateral body parts, may reveal increased stress in these populations. I examined patterns of abundance and fluctuating asymmetry of Brewer’s Sparrow (Spizella breweri), Sage Sparrow (Amphisipiza belli), and Sage Thrasher (Oreoscoptes montanus), in the western United States, to determine how these responses vary with proximity to range periphery of sagebrush. Using negative binomial regression and Akaike’s Information Criterion, I investigated associations between species abundance from North American Breeding Bird Survey count data and several local- and landscapelevel variables derived from digital maps depicting the distribution of sagebrush throughout the United States. Abundance for these three sagebrushobligate passerine birds was greatest in mid-elevation (1,200-2,300 m) areas and increased with sagebrush cover. I found little support for abundance declining as a function of proximity to range periphery. Using mixed model regression, I assessed the relationship between fluctuating asymmetry estimates in the tarsi of juveniles and the proximity of specimens to the periphery of sagebrush distribution. I predicted higher levels of fluctuating asymmetry in individuals nearer the range periphery. However, fluctuating asymmetry decreased with proximity to the range periphery for Sage Sparrow, and, although present Sage Thrasher, fluctuating asymmetry did not differ significantly across the geographic range for this species. Fluctuating asymmetry could not be estimated with confidence for Brewer’s Sparrow. I also examined how restoration treatments, such as seeding with a low impact rangeland drill and applying herbicide or sugar to plots, affected soil communities. Soil community functional diversity and structure were alike at sites where soil pH and percent bare ground were similar. Rangeland drill seeding and associated human trampling decreased biological soil crust cover at sites with high proportions of cyanobacteria. Herbicide treatments had little effect on soil communities, but addition of sugar to plots increased carbohydrate utilization and fungal biomass of cheatgrass- invaded soils. In studying paired intact and cheatgrass-invaded sagebrush plots, I found that microbial functional diversity and community composition were different in sagebrush, bunchgrass, cheatgrass, and interspace soils. Fungal biomass and species richness were highest under sagebrush and decreased under cheatgrass. To examine how soil community shifts might affect ecosystem processes, I investigated the contribution of fungi to inorganic nitrogen (N) mineralization in sagebrush and cheatgrass rhizospheres. Results from a ¹⁵N pool dilution experiment modified with the fungal protein synthesis inhibitor cycloheximide showed that gross and net N cycling rates did not differ between control sagebrush and cheatgrass soils and that fungi were important for gross NH₄⁺ production and consumption in both soil types. However, net nitrification increased in sagebrush soils after 24 h, suggesting that when organic matter decomposition by fungi ceased bacteria became carbon limited and could no longer assimilate NH₄⁺. Such shifts in fire behavior have triggered sweeping policy changes that were intended to prevent or contain fires but that pose significant risks to the integrity of ecosystems and the role fire historically played in shaping them. Here, we provide a social and ecological context for summarizing this special issue on fires, including general guidelines and principles for managers concerned about balancing the risks of inaction against the risks of action over extensive areas. Fundamental to our understanding of fire is the notion that it is extremely variable, has multiple causes, and requires ecological solutions that are sensitive to spatial scale and context. Therefore, forest managers must recognize that different forest types have different fire regimes and require fundamentally different fire- management policies. Furthermore, to restore or maintain ecological integrity, including the role of fire, treatments need to be tailored to site-specific conditions with an adaptive approach. We provide a conceptual framework for prioritizing fuel treatments and restoration activities in the wildlands-urban intermix versus those in wildland areas farther from human settlement. In general, the science of conservation biology has much to offer in helping to shape wildfire policy direction; however, conservation biologists must become more engaged to better ensure that policy decisions are based on sound science and that ecological risks are incorporated. Herbivores have the potential to alter key ecosystem processes in a number of ways. One is by altering the flow of nutrients from the canopy to the forest floor. The studies presented here examine the effects that frass (insect excreta), greenfall (green leaf fragments) and herbivore modified throughfall, have on decomposition processes and soil nutrient dynamics. Both studies were carried out in a lower montane tropical rain forest near the El Verde Field Station, Luquillo Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site, Puerto Rico. The first study presented here tested the hypotheses that green leaves are of higher quality and decompose more rapidly than senesced leaves. Green and senesced leaves of four common native tree species (Dacryodes excelsa, Manilkara bidentata, Guarea guidonia and Cecropia schreberiana), were collected and analyzed for C, N, and complex C compounds. Litterbags containing green and senescent leaves of each species were placed in the field for up to 16 weeks in order to compare rates of litter decomposition. Green leaves contained significantly higher (p < 0.05) concentrations of N and lower lignin:N ratios than senescent leaves for all four species. Decomposition rates were significantly higher (p < 0.05) for green leaves compared to senescent leaves for all four species. These results demonstrate that insect herbivores may influence key ecosystem processes via the production of greenfall. The relevance of this study extends to green leaf deposition resulting from multiple sources, including high wind and rain events, as well as disturbance by larger canopy organisms. The second study tested a direct link between herbivory and soil processes. By altering levels of herbivory on a common understory plant (Piper glabrescens), using a prevalent folivore (Lamponius portoricensis), this study tested for effects of herbivory on nutrient inputs to the soil, as well as rates of litter decomposition. Enclosures were constructed around P. glabrescens individuals in the field and assigned to one of four treatments: herbivore exclusion, control, low herbivory and high herbivory. Total leaf area loss and greenfall production were measured for each plant using a sub-sample of randomly chosen leaves. Litterbags and ion exchange resin bags, placed under each plant, recorded rates of litter decomposition and the flow of NO3, NH4 and PO4 to the forest floor during this 76-day experiment. The treatments were effective in establishing a wide range of herbivory. Both the total leaf area removed and greenfall deposition demonstrated significant positive correlations (p <0.05) with NO3 transfer to the forest floor, but not with NH4 or PO4. Green roofs may also mitigate species loss in urban areas and have been shown to support a surprising diversity of invertebrates, including rare and endangered species. In the first part of this study I reviewed the literature on urban invertebrate communities and diversity to better understand the role of green roofs in providing habitat in the context of the larger urban mosaic. My review concluded that, while other factors such as surrounding land use and connectivity are also important to specific invertebrate taxa, local habitat variables contribute substantially to the structure and diversity of urban invertebrate communities. The importance of local habitat variables in urban green spaces and strong support for the habitat complexity hypothesis in a number of other ecosystems has led to proposals that "biodiverse" roofs--those intentionally designed with varied substrate depth, greater plant diversity, or added elements such as logs or stones--would support greater invertebrate diversity, but there is currently limited peer reviewed data to support this. In order to address the habitat complexity hypothesis in the context of green roofs, in the second part of this study I surveyed three roofs designed primarily for stormwater management, three biodiverse roofs, and five ground-level green spaces, from March until September of 2014 in the Portland metropolitan area. Beetles (Coleoptera) were sampled bi-weekly as representatives of total species diversity. Biodiverse roofs had greater richness, abundance, and diversity of beetle species compared to stormwater roofs, but were not more diverse than ground sites. Both biodiverse roofs and ground sites had approximately 20% native beetle species while stormwater roofs had only 5%. Functional diversity was also higher on biodiverse roofs with an average of seven trophic groups represented, while stormwater roofs averaged only three. Ground sites, biodiverse roofs, and stormwater roofs each grouped distinctively in terms of beetle community composition and biodiverse roof communities were found to be positively correlated with roof age, percent plant cover, average plant height, and plant species richness. These results support the findings of previous studies on the importance of local variables in structuring urban invertebrate communities and suggest that biodiverse design can reliably increase greenroof diversity, with the caution that they remain no replacement for ground level conservation. Beetles (Coleoptera) were sampled bi-weekly as representatives of total species diversity. Biodiverse roofs had greater richness, abundance, and diversity of beetle species compared to stormwater roofs, but were not more diverse than ground sites. Both biodiverse roofs and ground sites had approximately 20% native beetle species while stormwater roofs had only 5%. Functional diversity was also higher on biodiverse roofs with an average of seven trophic groups represented, while stormwater roofs averaged only three. Ground sites, biodiverse roofs, and stormwater roofs each grouped distinctively in terms of beetle community composition and biodiverse roof communities were found to be positively correlated with roof age, percent plant cover, average plant height, and plant species richness. These results support the findings of previous studies on the importance of local variables in structuring urban invertebrate communities and suggest that biodiverse design can reliably increase greenroof diversity, with the caution that they remain no replacement for ground level conservation. The first essay examines the value of different wetland ecosystem services using an expanded meta-dataset of valuation studies in North America. The purpose of this essay is to explore the sources of variation in wetland values from valuation methodology, ecosystem functions, and site-specific geographic, demographic and socio-economic characteristics. This essay used panel random effect models stratified "by study", "by state" and "by wetland site" to address the issues of correlation between wetland value estimates. Results indicated that wetland welfare measures reported by the same study and in the same wetland site are correlated. By comparing regression results and conclusions from this study with two internationally scoped meta-analysis studies, this essay found that the wetland valuation literature is not robust to regional characteristics, and wetland welfare estimates are sensitive to geographic extent. The second essay extends the first essay to investigate spatial spillover effects of wetland welfare estimates in North America. The primary purpose of the essay is to explore whether wetland values are correlated across space and what determines the correlation. The goal is accomplished by incorporating spatial econometric methods into the meta-analysis framework. The essay constructed three spatial weight matrices based on threshold distances, the ecological similarity and the economic similarity of wetland sites in the metadata. Results indicate that spatial proximity is an important predictor of wetland values regardless of wetland type and function. In part this is captured through shared contexts including resource availability and market characteristics. However, similar ecological and economic profiles are insufficient to capture shared values when transferring value estimates across spatial areas. Results from this study also raised questions on whether ecological functions and economic markets are sufficient for improving international transfers when studies are beyond geographic thresholds. The third essay incorporates spatial econometric models into a stochastic optimization framework to explore the consequences of ignoring the spatial linkage of management units in land management outcomes. The integrated framework combines an economic decision model, a spatial fire simulation model, a spotted owl population prediction model to maximize the expected post-fire and post-treatment NSO population under a budget constraint. Results from this essay inform us that ignoring spatial habitat connections leads to an underestimate of the fuel treatment disturbance and an over-estimate of the expected post-fire and post-treatment NSO population. However, the negative externality of habitat conversions depends on the degree of habitat connections. Additionally, the amount of total treatment area depends on the degree of habitat connections. The optimization outcome suggests less fuel treatment for a landscape with a higher degree of habitat connections. The DEMO project examines the effects that different levels and patterns of green tree retention have on various aspects of biodiversity including the diversity of ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF). Ectomycorrhizal fungi play an important functional role in forest ecosystems. Ectomycorrhizal fungi are essential for nutrient uptake by the host tree, they have been shown to play a critical role in forest regeneration success, and EMF provide an important food source (in the form of sporocarps) for many small mammals. As part of the DEMO study, this thesis documents EMF diversity in the control unit (100% retention) and the spatially dispersed 40°/a basal area retention treatment (40%D). The measures of diversity studied included EMF constancy, abundance, and species richness. Constancy and abundance measures were analyzed only for the common ectomycorrhizae (EM) types. Morphological techniques for identification of the EMF were employed together with molecular techniques to achieve the finest level of identification possible. Characters used to assess morphology include mantle structures, emanating hyphae, rhizomorphs, root morphology, chemical reactions, and mantle color. Molecular techniques were used for identification purposes and for checking EM morphotype groups. Molecular techniques used included DNA extraction of the internal transcribed spacer region, polymerase chain reaction amplification, restriction fragment length polymorphism, and DNA sequencing. Significant responses to the 40%D treatment were determined by testing both pre and post EMF diversity within the treatment and by comparing changes in diversity between the control and the 40%D treatment. Overall, within the 40%D treatment, the majority of the common EMF species did not decrease significantly. A moderately significant difference was detected between the pre-treatment and post-treatment mean number of EM types per soil core (measure of species richness). This decrease in richness of about 50% in the post-treatment2 samples seems to indicate a delayed response to the treatment since the post-treatment1 samples were not different from the pre-treatment conditions. Since no dominant types were lost, the decline in richness occurred in the less common EM types. This research demonstrates that the 40%D treatment can maintain a relatively high legacy of EMF. However, there is a loss of some rare EM types and a reduction in abundance and constancy in some of the more common EM types. These results lend support for the consideration of40% dispersed green-tree retention as a silvicultural option when management goals include the maintenance of EMF diversity. Timber harvest via implementation of ecosystem-based forest management practices will require the continuing study of complex below-ground systems for the development of potential silvicultural treatments during further iterations of adaptive management. Continuation of current management leads to increasing risks while management approaches focusing on reserves or restoration result in trends that mostly stabilize or reduce risks. Even where ecological integrity is projected to improve with the application of active management, population increases and the pressures of expanding demands on resources may cause increasing trends in risk.
