  Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Dodge Canyon Culvert Replacement Project Completion Report (OWEB #205-162 & #206-284) Abstract -- In early 2004, teh Elk Creek Watershed Council identified an undersized steel culvert that was blocking fish passage to more than a mile of salmonid habitat on private land on Dodge Canyon Creek. The Council approached the land owner and obtained permission to seek fudning to replace the culvert. Two additional culverts on a side tributary, blocking 1/2 mile of additional habitat, and a partial barrier on Thompson Creek, were also also identified for removal. All culverts were slated for removal at one time by a single contractor in hopes of saving money. Final removal and construction of the culverts was completed on August 28, 2006. The landowner will maintain the culverts for 10 years, with periodic inspection by the Elk River Watershed Council. The Elk Creek Watershed Council will take photos of the projects for at least two years, and ODFW will conduct fish presence and spawning surveys to document fish use for two years. Without the large wood, spawning gravels have washed away leaving a mostly bedrock substrate. The down-cut stream is no longer connected to its former floodplain and fish have little refuge during high flows. Additionally, aquatic insect life, the basic food source for young salmonids, is limited without the diverse habitats formed by complexes of wood and gravel. Goals associated with this restoration proposal include: • Address limitation to anadromous fish production in Indian Creek tributaries o Enhance spawning, rearing, and overwintering habitat for anadromous and resident fish species o Restore storage capacity (water, substrates, and detritus) of the selected streams to levels more closely expected with unaltered systems in the Coast Range. • Establish a connection between past small scale restoration efforts • Maintain a network of organizations, stakeholders, and individuals who will participate in watershed restoration efforts. Widened channel floodplain from newly derived gravel, side channel formation / channel alteration (with more sinuosity), and additional scour pools were observed throughout the structure sites we monitored since the project implementation from high water events.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Fish Use of Estuarine Tidal Channels Enhanced with Large Woody Debris Abstract -- In 2005 and 2006, fish use of tidal channel habitat enhanced with artificially placed large woody debris was investigated in the Winchester Creek Tidelands Restoration Area of South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. Large woody debris (LWD) in the form of mature Sitka spruce trees was intentionally placed in the study area to enhance rearing and foraging habitat for juvenile salmonids and other fish species in 2005. Soon after the placement of LWD in the estuary, a study was initiated to compare fish abundance and species composition in tidal channels enhanced with LWD to those without LWD using electrofishing techniques. Two tidal channels, which are tributaries to Winchester Creek, were chosen for the study. A control reach was established on Tom’s Creek with no LWD present in the reach, while a treatment reach was established on Dalton Creek containing two intentionally placed Sitka spruce trees. In 2006, sampling was conducted to monitor the control and treatment reaches over a longer time period in an effort to ensure juvenile salmonids were sampled if present in the study area. Additionally, sampling was conducted on the mainstem of Winchester Creek to determine if juvenile salmonids were utilizing habitat in the main channel exclusive of the tidal channels. Within the Winchester Creek study area, electrofishing passes were performed within a single reach of Dalton and Tom’s Creeks, while beach seining was performed within two adjacent reaches of Winchester Creek. Beach-seined reaches were located between the confluences of Dalton and Tom’s Creeks with Winchester Creek. Electrofishing and beach seine sampling occurred on two consecutive days in each of five sampling periods. While only a small number of salmonids were observed in the Winchester Creek study area, all of the salmonids observed in the tidal tributaries were found in the Dalton treatment reach which has been enhanced with the placement of large wood debris. No salmonids were observed in the Tom’s Creek control reach. All of the coho sampled in Dalton Creek were found under an old wood weir structure, not associated with the placed LWD. This may be due in part to the difficulty of sampling under the placed LWD, where branches and deep water limit the effectiveness of electrofishing techniques.
