A proposed chemical treatment program in 1973 below Gilchrist failed to get total landowner approval. Large populations of small brown trout are present in the Little Deschutes where good habitat exists. Growth is slow and angling pressure and harvest is light. No special angling regulations are in effect at present. In July 1979, the Fish and Wildlife Commission accepted the Department's recommendation to continue managing the Little Deschutes River above Gilchrist Mill Pond for wild trout. The relationship of the Statewide Trout Management Plan to other ODFW plans is further discussed in Appendix A. The Sandy basin is situated in Multnomah and Clackamas counties (EPA reach 17080001), and drains approximately 508 square miles. The Sandy River basin is comprised of several subbasins, many of which are uniquely distinct hydrologically and geomorphologically. Principle tributaries include the Zigzag River, Still Creek, and the Salmon River in the upper basin and the Bull Run River, Gordon, Cedar, and Beaver creeks in the lower basin. Many other smaller tributaries located throughout the basin contribute significantly to stream flows and provide habitat for a wide array of fish and wildlife assemblages. The Sandy River is well known for its sport fishing. Winter steelhead, summer steelhead, and spring chinook are the most sought after species. Both winter and summer steelhead, coho, and spring chinook are supplemented with hatchery produced fish. Rainbow trout and fall chinook are no longer stocked in flowing waters of the Sandy River basin. In the late 1980's the Northwest Power Planning Council administered a planning process to create a management plan for the Columbia River basin. Project results further reveal the fundamental mechanisms that promote juvenile coho growth and survival in the estuarine ecotone. In conjunction with prior and current data, results highlight the critical importance of these diverse habitats for recovering viable and resilient Oregon Coast coho populations.
