  Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: The behavioral effectiveness of consumer credit counseling service on past clients in Linn-Benton County, Oregon Author: Vallade, Linda Michelle The effectiveness of the Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) program on past clients' current money and credit management was researched in this study. The researcher investigated whether the experience of consumer credit counseling had any behavorial impact on past clients' current credit practices. A sample of 104 clients who lived in toll-free Linn-Benton County was selected from the closed CCCS files. These clients were individuals and families who had sought and obtained counseling and terminated the counseling program between 1974 and 1979. A letter was sent to the 104 clients explaining the study and indicating that the researcher would contact them by phone to administer the questionnaire. Fifty clients participated in the study. Of the remaining 54 clients, 49 could not be contacted or had moved from the Linn-Benton County area, and five declined for personal reasons. The completion rate of persons able to be contacted was 90 percent. Background information on the 50 clients was obtained from the CCCS application files. Before participation in the CCCS program, the 50 clients had a mean age of 31 years; the mean number of dependent children was 1.7; 29 clients were married, five were separated, 14 were divorced, and two were single; 28 percent of the clients were employed in white collar occupations and 72 percent were employed in blue collar occupations; the mean income was $7,336; the mean amount of savings was $2.20; the mean amount of debt was $4,290.98; the mean income to debt ratio was 3.15; the mean number of creditors was 11.36; and the mean number of credit cards used was 2.38. The mean time span since the clients left the CCCS program was three years. Of the 50 clients in the study, 29 terminated the program by self-administration, 20 clients were drop outs, and one client declared bankruptcy. At the time of the interview, February 1980, the clients had a mean age of 34 years; mean number of dependent children was 1. 8; 31 clients were married, one was separated, 15 were divorced, and three were single; 32 percent of the clients were employed in white collar occupations and 68 percent were employed in blue collar occupations; the mean income was $15,290; the mean amount of savings was $412.98; the mean amount of debt was $2,633.80; the mean income to debt ratio was 21.83; the mean number of creditors was 2.58; and the mean number of credit cards used was 1.02. There was a significant change in the number of credit cards used, number of creditors owed, the amount of debt owed, and the amount of savings acquired when a t-test was applied at the .05 significance level. There was no association between change in number of credit cards used, change in creditors owed, change in amount of savings, change in amount of debt, and type of termination (drop outs or self-administered) and length of time since termination when a t-test or analysis of variance (F-test) was applied at the .05 significance level. The clients in the study did tend to change their credit and financial practices after participation in the CCCS program. The 50 clients ( 100 percent) reported the CCCS program as very helpful in assisting them with financial difficulties. This movement began in a few cities in the eastern part of the country, and in Los Angeles, but gradually emerged as an art form strongly associated with the city of Seattle and the Puget Sound region. This research studies the emergence and growth of the studio glass movement in the Puget Sound region from 1970 to 2003. It examines how glass artists and Seattle's urban elites interacted and worked separately to build the support structures and "art world" that provided learning and mentoring opportunities, workspaces, artistic validation, audience development, critical and financial support, which helped make glass a signature Puget Sound art form, and the role that artist social networks, social capital, cultural capital and cultural policy played in sustaining this community. In particular, the research seeks to explore the factors that nourish a new art form and artist community in second-tier cities that do not have the substantial cultural and economic support structures found in the "arts super cities" such as Los Angeles, New York City, and San Francisco. This study contributes to the growing literature on artist communities, and the roles played by social capital, cultural capital, urban growth coalitions and policy at different stages of community development. Results can assist policymakers in formulating policies that incorporate the arts as a form of community development. However, the results of this study, especially in speaking, are poor. In the present study, educational, sociocultural, and linguistic obstacles to learning for the Japanese student are considered. An educational system oriented toward passing college and university entrance examinations has distorted English curriculum. Furthermore, English teachers in Japan lack proficiency in the language. The teaching staffs and materials of language schools are poorly regulated. Concern with relative status, group identification, and loss of face acts as a deterrent to learning. For many learners the wrong type of motivation may exist. Consideration of phonological obstacles was limited to the area of rhythm (speed, stress, word grouping, pausing). An error analysis of the speech of twenty-five Japanese students of college age was carried out using recordings of an accent inventory. Speech was recorded both aurally and visually. No comparison of English and Japanese rhythm was made either aurally or visually. The students' speech was also rated by three native speakers for the amount of foreign accent in the area of rhythm. Three possible causes of errors were considered: language transfer, intralingual interference, and the universal hierarchy of difficulty. The source of the majority of errors was found to be due to interference. The Japanese were found to have problems in segmentation and stressing due primarily to the fact that English is a stress-timed language and Japanese is a syllable-timed one. The number of types of errors and total phonation and pause time correlated with the foreign accent rating. The best solution to the educational obstacles facing the Japanese English learner would be the divorcement of English from the entrance examinations and a reeducation of English teachers. Native-speaking English teachers should be made aware of the cultural constraints which limit the Japanese student's learning. Future teaching programs and materials should place more emphasis on intonation and rhythm for the Japanese English learner, particularly in the grouping of words. Through strict licensing policies and creative branding, the husband-and-wife duo led Technicolor in the aesthetic revolution of colorizing Hollywood. However, Technicolor's enormous success, beginning in 1938 with The Wizard of Oz, followed decades of duress on the company. Studios had been reluctant to adopt color due to its high costs and Natalie's commanding presence on set represented a threat to those within the industry who demanded creative license. The discrimination that Natalie faced, while undoubtedly linked to her gender, was more systemically linked to her symbolic representation of Technicolor itself and its transformation of the industry from one based on black-and-white photography to a highly sanctioned world of color photography. Over the years, Natalie and Herbert's marriage paid the cost of Technicolor's struggles causing them to secretly divorce in 1921, yet still run the company together through the early 1940s, until Herbert's affair with another woman resulted in their permanent separation. This thesis, presented as a pilot to an hour-long television series entitled Technicolor, explores, primarily from Natalie's perspective, how the rise and fall of Herbert and Natalie Kalmus's marriage paralleled the rise and fall of Technicolor itself. Therefore, this thesis consists of three parts: an annotated bibliography (or show bible, as it is referred to in the television industry), an essay which summarizes the results of this research, and finally the hour-long drama script itself. Results In 2012, 40.1% of Canadian adults surveyed experienced harm in the previous year related to the drinking of another person. These harms were more frequent among people who had a higher education level, were widowed, separated, divorced or never married, and were employed. Psychological, physical, and financial harms related to the drinking of others were significantly correlated to a person's mental well-being. Conclusions Harms related to the drinking of others are prevalent in this Canadian survey. Furthermore, the psychological, physical, and financial harms related to the drinking of others negatively impact the mental well-being of the affected individuals. Division of labor in household food preparation tasks is of interest in dietary intervention projects. Randomly selected families were recruited to participate in a 5-year family-based study. A small group format that emphasized family involvement was used to promote change from the American diet (40% fat, 500 mg cholesterol P/S = .05) to the Alternative diet (20% fat, 100 mg cholesterol, P/S = 1.0). The change of division of labor in the households was evaluated from baseline to 60 months. A subsample of 109 male-female couples who were not divorced, pregnant or ill, responded to a questionnaire regarding who does the cooking, shopping and deciding what the family will eat. Plasma lipids and dietary intake were assessed at baseline and at 60 months. At baseline, the majority of men and women indicated that the wives did most of the cooking, deciding and shopping, although both women and men indicated that they did more of the task than their spouse said they did. The overall distribution of labor in cooking and deciding did not significantly change after 5 years of dietary intervention at the family level; however, there was a trend towards increased participation by the men in these tasks. Men's participation in shopping, however, significantly increased. The couples were grouped according the husbands' reported increase or decrease in involvement in these tasks, and diet and lipid changes were evaluated. Increased involvement in household food preparation tasks did not lead to significantly greater dietary change except for consumption of polyunsaturated fat. The wives of men who increased their shopping reported an increase in total fat and saturated fat when compared to changes seen in the other wives. Taken as a group, both husbands and wives decreased their reported fat, cholesterol and saturated fat consumption and increased their reported carbohydrate intake in a manner similar to that suggested in Phase 1 of the Alternative diet. Plasma lipids remained stable in both men and women.
