It is important to understand all the features of the model selected, including when the model is appropriate and how using it may affect your results. This work examines how volume displacement effects in two-phase Eulerian-Lagrangian models manifest themselves. Some test cases are examined to determine what input these effects have on the flow, and if we can predict when they will become important. Bubble injection into a traveling vortex ring is studied in-depth, as it provides significant insight into the physics of these volume displacement effects. When a few bubbles are entrained into a traveling vortex ring, it has been shown that even at extremely low volume loadings, their presence can significantly affect the structure of the vortex core (Sridhar & Katz 1999). A typical Eulerian-Lagrangian point-particle model with two-way coupling for this dilute system, wherein the bubbles are assumed subgrid and momentum point-sources are used to model their effect on the flow, is shown to be unable to accurately capture the experimental trends of bubble settling location, bubble escape, and vortex distortion for a range of bubble parameters and vortex strengths. Accounting for fluid volume displacement due to bubble motion, using a model termed as volumetric coupling, experimental trends on vortex distortion and bubble settling location are well captured. The fluid displacement effects are studied by introducing the notion of a volume displacement force, the net force on the fluid due to volumetric coupling, which is found to be dominant even at the low volume loadings investigated here. A method of quantifying of these forces is derived and used to study the effects for a wide range of particle to fluid density ratios in Taylor-Green vortices. A simple modification to the standard point-particle Lagrangian approach is developed, wherein the interphase reaction source terms are consistently altered to account for the fluid displacement effects and reactions due to bubble accelerations. As more megahypotheses arise from increasingly sophisticated views of plate tectonics and from more detailed analyses of synoptic images from outer space, it is the task of the geologist to continue to provide sound and reliable ground truth with which to test them. For now it would appear that large overviews from such investigations may include: 1) Possible large-scale bending and dislocation of pre-Mesozoic structures in the subsurface to give an arc-like distribution. 2) Large-scale regional and multiple thrust faulting in the Klamaths through much of the Mesozoic Era. 3) Explosive volcanism in the mid-Tertiary possibly representing subduction. 4) Tensional tectonics represented by Columbia River Basalt eruptions in the mid-Miocene and later block faulting in the Basin and Range province of southeastern Oregon. The Brothers fault zone and its possible extensions may represent the northern boundary of block faulting of the Basin and Range. 5) Possible division of the State into four blocks separated by northwest trending shear zones. A system of north-south compression could account for northeast-trending linears as well. 6) Possible tensional block faulting and graben structures beneath the flows of the Cascades Formation (High Cascades). The Nanga Parbat-Haramosh massif (NPHM) is a north-south trending structural and topographic high, which interrupts the east-west trend of the Himalaya in northern Pakistan. Previously, the massif was thought to be bounded by the Main Mantle thrust (MMT), a north-dipping thrust along which the Kohistan-Ladakh arc was thrust south over the northern margin of the Indian continent. This study presents field and geochemical data suggesting that the eastern boundary of the massif, the Stak fault zone, is a young feature that displaces the suture zone. The Stak fault zone marks the boundary between Precambrian kyanite-sillimanite bearing biotite gneiss of continental affinity and Cretaceous (?) arc lithologies of the western Ladakh terrane. The arc complex consists of amphibolitic country rock that has been intruded by gabbroic to tonalitic plutons. The protolith of the amphibolite is immature oceanic island arc tholeiitic basalt. The mafic to intermediate plutons are dominantly calc-alkaline and could have formed in either a mature island arc setting or a continental margin setting. The Ladakh arc terrane exposes the upper section of an arc, below the sedimentary and volcanic cover. The Stak fault zone is a 3-5 km wide zone containing at least four major high angle faults that separate blocks of various lithologies. The only true mylonite zone occurs along the westernmost fault. A faulted late stage dike is evidence for recent activity along the easternmost fault. The units along the western side of the fault zone are analogous to deep oceanic arc lithologies; tholeiitic amphibolite, banded gneiss, and a section of a layered mafic complex. The units along the eastern side of the fault zone are mineralogically and chemically correlative to the mafic plutons exposed in the western Ladakh terrane. The geometry of the fault zone, the lack of suture zone lithologies, and the evidence for recent activity suggest that the Stak fault zone does not represent the suturing event, when the Kohistan- Ladakh arc was obducted onto the northern margin of India. Instead, the fault zone is likely formed in response to the recent uplift of the NPHM.
