It is possible to store electrical energy cleanly by splitting the water into oxygen (a clean byproduct) and hydrogen (an energy dense fuel) via water electrolysis. The efficiency of hydrogen production is limited, in part, by the high kinetic overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). OER catalysts have been extensively studied for the last several decades. However, no new highly active catalyst has been developed in decades. One reason that breakthroughs in this research are limited is because there have been many conflicting activity trends. Without a clear understanding of intrinsic catalyst activity it is difficult to identify what makes catalysts active and design accordingly. To find commercially viable catalysts it is imperative that electrochemical activity studies consider and define the catalyst’s morphology, loading, conductivity, composition, and structure. The research goal of this dissertation is twofold and encompasses 1) fundamentally understanding how catalysis is occurring and 2) designing and developing a highly active, abundant, and stable OER catalyst to increase the efficiency of the OER. Specifically, this dissertation focuses on developing methods to compare catalyst materials (Chapter II), understanding the structure-compositional relationships that make Co-Fe (oxy)hydroxide materials active (Chapter III), re-defining activity trends of first row transition metal (oxy)hydroxide materials (Chapter IV), and studying the role of local geometric structure on active sites in Ni-Fe (oxy)hydroxides (Chapter V). As part of a collaboration with Proton OnSite, the catalysts studied are to be integrated into an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer in the future. Eight instructional groups were video taped weekly for nine weeks, and pre- and post-test assessments were given to 31 at-risk kindergartners from two schools using established evidence-based practices. Each implementation measure represented a different measurement approach (i.e., discrete behavioral measurement, global ratings) and focused on different aspects of implementation (e.g., structural, process, or multicomponent elements). Overall, results of this analysis indicated that (a) the implementation tools were highly correlated with each other, (b) only the multicomponent tool independently accounted for group differences, (c) together the multicomponent and process-oriented measures appear to account for additional variance in group differences, and (d) there were no significant trends in implementation across time as measured by any of the tools, however there were significant differences in trends over time between groups when using the structural measure. But, many global destinations, including several Caribbean island nations, have yet to respond effectively to these evolving trends or to capitalize on the shift in user demographics and preferred information sources. This deficiency is especially notable in regions where tourism, leisure, and recreation are significant contributors to the local economy, such as the Caribbean. Collectively, tourism jobs provide more than 15% of the region’s gross domestic product (GDP), and employment for nearly 20% of the available workforce. Caribbean tourism proponents are, therefore, strongly urged to consider the growing effects of social media on destination marketing. If overlooked or disregarded, only a few negative guest comments may outweigh any positive remarks, even if more numerous and correct in their depiction of a place and its people. Done right however, promotions shared through personalized fan pages, bookmarks, and destination profiles can effectively counter such (mis)information and thereby, stimulate greater awareness and visitor interest. The challenge for many travel providers and operators is how to do so affordably and successfully, given the financial and human costs to first ascertain which marketing tools and venues are cost-effective and trusted by their targeted audience, and to then maintain the relevancy and accuracy of the selected options over time. To assist in this endeavor, this paper evaluated multiple online sources to assess social media’s role in shaping travel choices to the Caribbean, including the websites and personal blogs most utilized by prospective and past visitors. Dominant trends are also highlighted to document the increasing dependence on mobile technology by travelers. With this data, the author’s intent is to enable tourism leaders to effectively capitalize on the region’s strengths, while recognizing and thereby, remedying features rated unsatisfactory by Caribbean guests. Exposure to moderately high levels of ionizing radiation (<20 Gy) has in some instances shown a hormetic effect in numerous vegetable-type crops. Past experiments performed in outdoor cultivars have shown a somewhat unpredictable increase in growth rate with a higher overall yield in a specified time when the seeds are exposed to ionizing radiation prior to germination. This experiment has attempted to eliminate potentially confounding variables in the growth of a legume utilizing an Environmental Protection Agency controlled green house. The experiment was a completely randomized block design with six blocks and seven treatment groups. Each treatment group of pinto beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were exposed to ⁶⁰Co radiation, given doses of 5-20 Gy, planted and grown for 40 days. Due to the symbiotic relationship with rhizobium bacteria within a seed, the expected result was a lowered nitrogen fixation capacity as bacteria concentration was reduced due to sterilization by the high energy gamma, yielding a smaller plant mass. The predicted trend in reduction would be described by the linear no-threshold model. A statistically significant increase in overall plant mass occurred in the 5 Gy treatment group, with a subsequent linear trend in mass reduction at treatment levels of 7.5, 10, 12.5 and 15 Gy. The overall quality and plant mass decreased markedly at a treatment level of 20 Gy. Additional possible contributions to plant differences in growth within a green house were light intensity, temperature, CO₂ level and soil water retention. It is tectonically located within the "Columbia Arc" of the Nevadan oroaenic belt. The Seven Devils Volcanics, Permian to Traissic in age, are the oldest rocks in the area. They are composed of a eugeosynclinal sequence of metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks. The North Hornet and Olive Creek intrusives are metamorphosed meta-quartz diorite plutons. They were guided in their emplacement by pre-existing northeast trending fractures in the Seven Devils Volcanics. Both intrusives are Triassic or older in age. The Seven Devils Volcanics and the meta-quartz diorite plutons have been cut by fine-grained mafic dikes some time before regional metamorphism. All of the pre-Tertiary rocks in the area have been subjected to low-grade regional metamorphism. This probably took place before Late Jurassic time. The highly altered, fine-grained, partially porphyritic rock in the central part of the Peck Mountain area is not a separate intrusive, as it has previously been described. It is, instead, a zone of hydrothermal alteration that parallels the contact between the meta-quartz diorite and the Seven Devils Volcanics. Mineralogical and textural evidence shows, however, that the hydrothermal fluids must have emanated from a younger (post Jurassic) source at depth and not from the meta-quartz diorite presently exposed in the area. The hydrothermal fluids were also guided along northeast trending fractures in the pre- Tertiary rocks. The Columbia River Basalt, of Miocene age, once covered the entire Peck Mountain area. Post-Miocene erosion has exposed the pre-Tertiary rocks as a window in the surrounding basalt. There is evidence in the Peck Mountain area that both the Yakima and the Picture Gorge formations of the Columbia River Basalt may be present. If this can be verified by further studies. the contact could prove invaluable in deciphering post-Miocene tectonism. An original list of competency statements was generated from the literature and from persons active in the field of long-term care administration. This list of 53 statements was placed into questionnaire form and submitted to a panel of 20 national experts. These experts were identified by their contributions to the field and by recommendations of organizations involved in long-term care. This research used a modification to the Delphi technique to solicit the opinions of the experts concerning each of the competency statements. Findings Forty-two competency statements, arranged in five job function categories, met the mean standard for acceptance and were included in a final list of long-term care administrator competencies. The five job function categories were the following: Patient Care; Personnel Relations; Budgeting and Financing; Management and Supervision; and Legal Problems and Government Regulations. The category of Legal Problems and Government Regulations experienced the highest level of agreement among the expert panelists, followed by the categories of Personnel Relations, Management and Supervision, Budgeting and Financing, and Patient Care, respectively. The high level of disagreement experienced in the Patient Care category was attributed to the trend of increased separation of administrative responsibilities and direct patient care. The trend in long-term care administration, as indicated by these experts, is moving in the direction of principles associated, historically, with the general field of administration. A herd of re-introduced California bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana) was studied from 15 June 1976 to 31 August 1977. Thirteen major and seven minor habitats were delineated and described. Habitat use by bighorns was observed throughout the study and a habitat preference value (H.P.V.) was calculated based on use by ewe-lamb groups. Certain habitats were highly preferred for foraging or resting by bighorns during different seasons of the year, probably because of the physical and vegetative characteristics they offered. Examination of daily activity patterns of ewe-lamb groups revealed that they primarily fed in the morning, rested at mid-day, and again fed toward evening during all seasons. Comparison of the activity budgets (time allotment for the various activities) between the sex and age groups within seasons disclosed statistical differences in all seasons. In spring lambs foraged less and pursued other activities more than ewes or rams. In summer, rams foraged less than lambs and lambs foraged less than ewes. The reverse trend was noted for resting activity. These trends were probably related energy demands of each sex and age class. In fall and winter no difference was found between the activity budgets of ewes and lambs. Adult rams, however, spent less time foraging and more time resting and pursuing other activities than ewes or lambs. This was related to energy demands and the rut.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Magnetic profiles across the Aleutian Trench and ridge Author: Skorpen, Allan Jerome During the North Pacific cruise of the R/V Yaquina in 1966, total magnetic field intensity was measured in the Andreanof group of the Aleutian Islands. Three north-south track lines were made across the Aleutian Trench and ridge between longitudes 175° W and 180°. Three small scale magnetic profiles across the trench and ridge and one large scale profile over the crest of the ridge were constructed from the data. Total field and anomaly contour maps were drawn from the profiles. The data reveal: 1. A strong east-west trend of the contours present south of the ridge but absent north of the ridge which suggests that the Aleutian ridge is the boundary of two different magnetic provinces. 2. Three north-south track lines were made across the Aleutian Trench and ridge between longitudes 175° W and 180°. Three small scale magnetic profiles across the trench and ridge and one large scale profile over the crest of the ridge were constructed from the data. Total field and anomaly contour maps were drawn from the profiles. The data reveal: 1. A strong east-west trend of the contours present south of the ridge but absent north of the ridge which suggests that the Aleutian ridge is the boundary of two different magnetic provinces. 2. Twenty percent of all occupational related fatalities occur in construction; approximately three construction workers die per calendar day. Moreover, this trend has been prevalent for too long. One method to reduce this trend is to involve architects and design engineers in considering construction safety during the design process. The concept of designing for construction safety is a viable intervention to improve worker safety. However, in the United States many barriers (legal, contractual, regulatory) exist that prevent this intervention from becoming part of a standard practice within the construction industry. Four-hundred and fifty construction accidents from two databases were analyzed and a link to the design for construction safety concept was determined. An objective investigation model was developed to make these determinations. A significant link between the concept of designing for construction safety and construction fatalities and disabling injuries was established. Specific construction project parameters linked to the concept of designing for construction safety include the minimization of risk due to falls through and from roofs, skylights and structural steel construction; and the minimization of risk due of contact with electric and other utilities.
