The stomach contents of 23 green sturgeon collected from fish harvested in the Klamath River were analyzed. Only four stomachs contained identifiable food items, with the others containing food far too digested for identification, gravel, or no contents. Two stomachs contained the small gastropod, Olivellapyna, one stomach contained the carapace remains of a female Dungeness crab, Cancer magister, and one stomach contained the posterior portions of three ammocoetes, Lampetra tridentata. Preliminary analysis was conducted using mtDNA to assess the potential of using this technique for assessing the stock structure of green sturgeon. Although the Klamath River Fishery Restoration Program did not fund this analysis, the results are presented because this work was designed to yield complementary information to the isozyme study. No diagnostic differences were detected between samples collected from the Klamath River and the Columbia River estuary using Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism analysis. Study results indicated that microsateliite DNA analyst might be the most appropriate current genetic technique for assessing the population structure of green sturgeon. Fishing practices and gear configuration, management regulations, and markets dictate which animals ultimately are retained or discarded. The impact of a fishery and the efficacy of management regulations can depend on the mortality rate of the animals that interact with the gear or are discarded. The Reflex Action Mortality Predictor (RAMP) is a simple, non-invasive, and inexpensive approach that has been used to evaluate this component of fishing mortality. The RAMP approach relates the degree of reflex impairment in an animal to the probability the animal will die. Since its introduction in 2006, the RAMP approach has been utilized in the U.S. and abroad to evaluate mortality for a variety of species, fishing gear types, and stressors. Although there have been numerous applications of the RAMP approach in mortality estimation studies, there has been limited research to directly evaluate RAMP estimates and some skepticism remains in the fisheries science and management communities about the reliability and accuracy of the approach. The goal of this dissertation was to conduct research to assess RAMP and to synthesize findings from previously completed RAMP studies. The three research studies described in this dissertation consider: (1) the accuracy of applying an established relationship between reflex impairment and mortality probability to predict overall mortality attributed to novel stressors; (2) the development and utilization of a RAMP relationship to evaluate discard mortality in a fishery with management regulations that mandate discarding of certain categories of animals; and (3) whether the RAMP approach produces accurate estimates of mortality if survival is determined through laboratory captive holding. The first study estimated a relationship between reflex impairment and mortality probability for Tanner crab (Chionoecetes bairdi) discarded from the groundfish bottom trawl fishery in the Gulf of Alaska. This relationship was then compared to one previously established for Tanner crab in the Bering Sea bottom trawl fishery that encountered the fishing gear, but remained on the seafloor ('unobserved bycatch'). While mortality probabilities were similar between the two studies for crab with no or full reflex impairment, discarded crab with intermediate levels of reflex impairment had lower mortality probabilities than those from the unobserved bycatch study. Results from this study indicate the importance of describing all stressors to which animals are exposed and detailing the study methodology when initially creating a RAMP relationship. Failure to do so may result in inaccurate mortality estimates when the RAMP is applied to animals exposed to stressors not included in the original calibration. The second study developed a RAMP relationship using laboratory captive holding for Dungeness crab (Cancer magister) discarded in the Oregon commercial and recreational Dungeness fisheries and estimated that the discard mortality rate is lower than previously determined. This supports the goal of the '3-S' management strategy currently employed for these fisheries to protect sub-legal males (Size), females (Sex), and soft-shell (Season) crab by discarding them from the catch. For the commercial ocean Dungeness fishery, the estimated overall discard mortality rates (five days after release) varied by sex and shell-hardness, and reflex impairment was a significant predictor of mortality for both the commercial and recreational fisheries. In addition, results indicated that, when evaluating the role of discard mortality in '3-S' management with respect to fishery impact and sustainability, it is important to look not only at mortality rates, but also at the mortality- and bycatch- per retained ratios, and temporal trends relative to changes in effort, animal condition, and catch composition. This study also highlighted the (i) importance of evaluating the influence of biological, environmental, and fishing variables on mortality, (ii) complications that arise when establishing a RAMP relationship for a low impact fishery, and (iii) limitations of determining mortality through laboratory captive holding. The third study used mark-recapture methods to evaluate the reliability of results generated using the RAMP relationship established in the second study, which was based on the survival of crab held in captivity in the laboratory. Given the unnatural conditions for determining survival in captivity and the short-term duration of the experiment, mortality probability estimates may be biased. Similarities in patterns of relative survival rates between the studies lend support to the ability of the RAMP relationship to estimate discard mortality rates using captive holding. The laboratory-based RAMP approach was superior in its ability to provide direct estimates of mortality rates, whereas the mark-recapture study was limited to providing relative survival rates between reflex impairment levels that were imprecise due to low numbers of recaptured crab. This study highlighted the complications associated with tagging discarded animals and conducting a RAMP study with a fishery that has highly variable seasonal fishing effort. A synthesis of the research described in this dissertation and published work by other researchers highlights the limitations of the RAMP approach so that future researchers can avoid pitfalls in its application, and leads to suggestions on how to standardize some of the methodological steps. This analysis aims to increase the reliability of future RAMP studies and their production of high quality estimates of discard mortality rates that promote sustainable fisheries. Year: 2000, 2005 Abstract The objectives of this two-year study (1998-1999) were to document distribution, abundance, age class structure, recruitment success, and habitat use by all life history stages of shortnose and Lost River suckers in three lower Klamath River hydroelectric reservoirs (J. C. Boyle, Copco, and Iron Gate). Lost River sucker catches were sporadic (only 3 adult individuals total) and the focus of our analyses, therefore, shifted to shortnose suckers. Adult and larval suckers were found in all reservoirs both years. All life history stages (larvae, juveniles and adults) were found in J. C. Boyle during both years and in Copco in 1999. Juvenile suckers were not found in Copco in 1998. The number of adult shortnose suckers was highest in Copco reservoir (n=165), followed by J.C. Boyle (n=50) and Iron Gate (n=22). Larger and older individuals dominated Copco and Iron Gate reservoirs and little size structure was detected. J. C. Boyle tended to have smaller adult shortnose suckers and many size classes were present. Unidentifiable larval suckers were most abundant in Copco reservoir where historic spawning of shortnose suckers has been documented. Larval suckers in Copco and Iron Gate reservoirs were most abundant in mid to late June before quickly disappearing from catches. J. C. Boyle larval suckers peaked in mid July, attained larger sizes, and were caught later in the season. It appeared that recruitment of young-of-the-year suckers only occurred in J. C. Boyle with downstream reservoirs recruiting older individuals, perhaps those that had earlier recruited to J. C. Boyle. Tagging studies could clarify adult recruitment dynamics and an additional study of juvenile recruitment would be needed to confirm these patterns. Predation pressure may be somewhat reduced in J. C. Boyle in comparison to the other reservoirs as its fish community was dominated by native fishes while communities in Copco and Iron Gate reservoirs were dominated by exotic predators. J. C. Boyle also possessed proportionally more littoral habitat, which suggests it may provide a more stable environment for young fishes. However, our sampling was inadequate to demonstrate such relationships due to high variance in larval and juvenile catches and potentially confounding habitat variables. One such variable was water level fluctuations, which could interact with habitat and resource availability in complex ways. For example, water level fluctuations, presumed to have a negative impact, were greatest in J. C. Boyle. Extrapolation from the literature suggests it should have had the poorest habitat for larval and juvenile suckers, but our results indicated J. C. Boyle had the most young suckers. Additional study of the relationships between water level fluctuations, habitat availability, the exotic fish community, and juvenile sucker recruitment would be needed to better understand early life history ecology of endangered lake suckers in these systems. Forested landscapes are more susceptible to fire, insect, and disease than under historic conditions. Rangelands are highly susceptible to noxious weed invasion. The disturbance regimes that operate on forest and rangeland have changed substantially, with lethal fires dominating many areas where non-lethal fires were the norm historically. Terrestrial habitats that have experienced the greatest decline include the native grassland, native shrubland, and old forest structures. There are areas within the Assessment area that have higher diversity than others. Aquatic systems are now more fragmented and isolated than historically and the introduction of non-native fish species has complicated current status of native fishes. Core habitat and population centers do remain as building blocks for restoration. Social and economic conditions within the Assessment area vary considerably, depending to a great extent on population, diversity of employment opportunities, and changing demographics. Those counties with the higher population densities and greater diversity of employment opportunities are generally more resilient to economic downturns. This Assessment provides a rich information base, including over 170 mapped themes with associated models and databases, from which future decisions can benefit. Year: 2002, 2005 Humans have altered the Klamath River Canyon in many ways. This study focuses on the years from 1955 to 2003. One substantial alteration is the conversion of terraces into irrigated pastures for agriculture and cattle ranching. This research project explains the relationships between the irrigation network and the vegetation and land use cover patterns that existed in the past and that exist today at Beswick Ranch. Data sources such as aerial photographs, maps, and other historical information are used to create Geographic Information System (GIS) maps and models of the area. Due to time constraints, the final maps and models are not complete at this time. However, the completed models were synthesized with observational data to come to preliminary conclusions. While the ditches of Shovel Creek Pasture have undergone little to no change at all since 1955, ranchers have added ditches to Faye Pasture. Ranch workers have also increased the amount of agricultural land use cover and decreased in tree cover of Faye Pasture. Conversely, ranchers increased the tree cover and non-agricultural land cover, and they have decreased the agricultural cover. The GIS coverages of Shovel Pasture remain in the preliminary stage, and further analyses of the calculated areas of land use cover and ditch lengths are needed to complete this study. In partnership with PacifiCorp and the BLM, this project aims to provide information about the impacts of the current and historical irrigation systems used on the pastures and riparian zones within this reach of the Klamath River Canyon from 1955 to 2003. Even at this stage, the preliminary coverages provide insight into the relationships between irrigation, vegetation communities, and land use cover that have occurred during the study period.
