Abstract -- This report provides an assessment of abundance, distribution, spawn timing, and hatchery:wild ratios of spawning adult coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) based on EMAP spawning surveys in the Oregon portion of the Lower Columbia River in the 2002, 2003, and 2004 spawning seasons. The Oregon portion of the Lower Columbia River Evolutionarily Significant Unit (ESU) extends from the mouth of the Columbia River to the Hood River, excluding areas above Willamette Falls. Analysis is conducted at the population complex level, six subsets of the ESU defined during Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Status Review (Chilcote 1999). Population characteristics, most notably the proportion of wild spawners and spawn timing, vary among complexes. Interannual variation within complexes over the last three years is linked to streamflow variation. Most hatchery straying occurred within complex, though the Bonneville complex received strays from further upriver. Abundance increased in areas without evidence of hatchery inputs. Abundance goals established by the ODFW endangered species management plan (Chilcote 2001) in the Clackamas (>1900 adults) and Sandy (>670 adults) have been met the last two years; however, spawner densities and the proportion of wild spawners are lower than on the Oregon Coast. Sand rollers are rare and endemic to the lower Columbia River drainage, including the Willamette River and its tributaries. Historical records are scarce. In 1945, R.E. Dimick and F. Merryfield found sand rollers to be localized in the Willamette River from Albany to Springfield, Santiam River, Rickreall Creek, Mary’s River, and the Coast Fork Willamette River. The Oregon State University museum collection has samples from the following Willamette River drainages: Coast and Middle Forks of the Willamette River, Mary’s River, Luckiamute River, Molalla River, Mill Creek, Long Tom River, and Santiam River. Their preferred habitat is quiet backwaters and pool margins of small to large rivers, usually near vegetation and woody debris over sand. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife surveyed historic and recently documented locations in 2005 to determine the current status and distribution of sandrollers in the Willamette River basin. Sand rollers were collected from at least one location in most of the major Willamette River subbasins sampled. Construction of Dexter, Lookout Point and Hills Creek dams in the 1950s and 1960s without fish passage fragmented the habitat and limited the range of the population to above Hills Creek Dam. This population declined and the last confirmed bull trout sighting above Hills Creek dam was a photograph taken by an angler in 1990. Buchanan et al. (1997) described bull trout in the Middle Fork Willamette River as “probably extinct” after extensive surveys from 1993 through 1997 failed to observe any bull trout. In 1997 the US Forest Service and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife began a program to reestablish bull trout in the Middle Fork Willamette. More than 10,000 bull trout fry have been transferred from the relatively healthy McKenzie population to the Middle Fork Willamette River. Adult bull trout are once again present in the Middle Fork Willamette, although natural reproduction has not been documented. Between 1994-97, ODFW field observations provided circumstantial evidence that some juvenile chinook were surviving passage through the dam.
