Dairy Creek is a major tributary of the Tualatin River which experiences algal problems during the late summer when stream flows decrease and water temperatures increase. The upper reaches of Dairy Creek are forested land, while the lower reaches are devoted to intensively irrigated agricultural production. It has been proposed that excessive algae blooms are associated with elevated nutrient concentrations during summer low-flow conditions. The objective of this project was to evaluate nutrient loading to the Tualatin River from the Dairy Creek watershed. Water quality parameters were selected to examine relationships between precipitation, flow, solids and nutrient constituents. The following conclusions were reached: 1. Surface runoff and erosion processes did not appear to occur and hence had little impact on water quality during the months of July through October during 1990 and 1991. 2. Groundwater moving to the stream appears to drive flow and have significant influence on water quality during summer low-flow conditions. 3. Nutrient concentrations are greatest during the summer. This may be a consequence of increased solubility and greater contact time between soils and groundwater moving toward the creek. A second alternative is the winter time sediment deposition. 4. Most of the nutrient and solids loading occurs during the winter and early spring at times of highest stream flows. The Tualatin River is 86 miles long and has a drainage basin of 711 square miles. The drainage basin incorporates forest, agricultural, and urban areas. Located in the Portland metropolitan area, these problems have been acerbated by the effects of urban growth. To help analyze pollution control alternatives, a river model study, funded by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), was undertaken. An in-stream model of hydraulics and water quality was developed. The Corps of Engineer's CE-QUAL-W2 model, a twodimensional, laterally averaged, dynamic model of hydrodynamics and water quality was applied to the Tualatin system. Calibration of the main pool model of the Tualatin River was from field data taken during June through August of 1991. Verification of the model was performed from field data taken during the summer of 1990. After calibration and verification of the model, management alternatives were evaluated in order to achieve DEQ mandated water quality standards. Environmental performance criteria were determined to evaluate differences between model scenarios. Management alternatives focused on the reduction of point and non-point sources of pollution, flow augmentation, and structural changes in the river system, such as removal of the Lake Oswego Diversion Dam. The river basin model was originally divided into several reaches. Individual models were developed for each reach. The models were set-up for each section of the Willamette basin as described in Annear et al. (2004a), the models were calibrated to field data and management strategies were evaluated as described in Annear et al (2004b). This report outlines the model calibration of each of these model sections or elements for both the calibration time periods. The calibration period for each model section differs due to the availability of boundary condition data. Forecasting potential shifts in such WES is critical to identifying the form and magnitude of likely impacts. We quantified the levels and values of WES under multiple climate change scenarios in the two watersheds located in the Portland metropolitan area, Oregon, USA using the combination of a hydrologic model Better Assessment Science Integrating point and Non-point Sources - Soil and Water Assessment Tool (BASINS-SWAT) and an ecosystem evaluation model ? Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST). Using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change?s AR4 climate change simulation results, we found that there is a slight relative increase in annual water yield, sediment yield, and dissolved phosphorus, but storm peak management does not change substantially by the 2050s. Spatial analysis shows that the locations of hot and cold spots remain relatively stable. It is also shown that there are high spatial and temporal uncertainties associated with climate change projections due to variations in precipitation projections toward the middle of the 21st century. The findings of our study provide useful information for water and land managers in identifying target areas for conservation to best sustain WES provision, use, and value under a range of climate change scenarios.
