Adaptation to role transitions can have various outcomes. Health and demographic characteristics as well as environmental control have been shown to affect the transition to the role of patient. The acutely ill elderly's adaptation to the role of hospitalized patient has not been measured from the elderly patient's perspective. This study utilized a random sample of 176 hospitalized elderly medical-surgical patients and the patients' registered nurses to examine the relationships among demographic and health characteristics, latitude of choice and elderly hospitalized patient adjustment. Patients were excluded who had been in ICU for more than 24 hours, had decreased mental status, or were judged to be too physically ill to participate. The study used an adaptation of the Latitude of Choice Scale (a measure of environmental control) developed by Hulicka and colleagues, a nurse-rated hospitalized patient adjustment scale developed by Cicirelli, and an adaptation of the adjustment scale for patients' self-assessment. Results from a series of multiple regression analyses indicate that, taken as a group, neither demographic nor health characteristics predict environmental control, as measured by the adapted version of the Latitude of Choice Scale (LOC). However, one individual health characteristic, length of time since last hospitalization, was a negative predictor of LOC. Further, the results indicate that taken as a group, health and demographic characteristics, along with patient LOC scores are not predictive of either nurse or patient-rated adaptation. The individual health characteristic "patient acuity rating" did negatively predict both nurse and patient-rated adjustment scores. Nurse-rated patient adjustment scores were also negatively predicted by the participants' prior number of hospitalizations. A paired-t test indicated that patients rated themselves significantly better adjusted than did their nurses. This finding was judged to be clinically unimportant because of the small real difference in the mean scores. Random-effects ANOVA found no significant variance between nurses' ratings of patients. Year: 2011 ABSTRACT Differences in informed scenic beauty perceptions, among 504 residents of Oregon, USA, were investigated to see how environmental attitudes, demographics, and old-growth versus harvested forests affected them. Scenic differences dominated explanation of perceptual differences. Attitudes accounted for small marginal differences in perceived scenic beauty if they instigated affects due to landscapes’ scenic content. These affects reversed direction with changes in landscape type. Demographic attributes only related to very small differences in perceived beauty if they were strongly correlated with such affective attitudes. These relationships often reversed or became inoperative with coincident changes in landscapes, attitudes, or other demographic traits. Respondents disagreed about ugly more than beautiful landscapes. Forest protection attitudes were associated with younger people, regional newcomers, urban rather than rural residents, more education, and more income. Forest production attitudes were associated with the opposite traits. Differences in scenic beauty perceptions were associated only with respondents’ ages, regional experience and residential locations. It is generally not worthwhile to account for viewers’ traits in landscape assessments except when attitudes contend with the content of ugly scenery. Group vitality, the position a group takes based on structures in society, is partially formed by institutional support. This includes representation and depiction in the media. Niche describes specialized content that gratifies individuals, groups, and their needs. This content can be found in the form of books, music, film, television, and more. The current study focused on niche television content preference within specific groups of people based on their demographics. Separate genres were considered niche categories in this research. Participants were asked to rate how much they enjoyed different genres of television on a Likert-type scale. They were also asked to report how much television they watch per day, which television services they use to watch, and their demographic information. Based on the data, sports are more popular with males than females, reality television is more popular with females than males, and Netflix is extremely popular. Future research possibilities include a focus on psychographics instead of demographics, exploring how different audiences feel about another medium and its variety of choices, or doing this research on a larger scale. Several factors that are likely to affect the District’s enrollment between 2000 and 2010 are considered and the geographical areas within the District (the cities of Eagle Point and Shady Cove, the unincorporated urban area of White City, and the rural unincorporated area) are examined. To account for different probabilities of demographic events, three scenarios of population, housing, and enrollment changes were developed. Forecasts are made for the total District, by grade level, for the years 2000, 2005, and 2010 using three assumptions: (a) the most likely enrollment growth assuming housing growth projected by local planners, (b) lower enrollment growth, assuming that housing and population grow at a slower pace and, and (c) high enrollment growth, assuming that housing and population growth increase at higher rates.
