However, certain limitations such as high temperature stability and brittleness limit its applicability. This problem is addressed by reinforcing PLA with a variety of materials but the process gives rise to different issues in compatibilization due to differences in polarity of materials. In this research, surface of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC's) is modified with lactic acid and lactic acid oligomers and are then incorporated into bulk PLA matrix to form nanocomposite films via solvent casting. This thesis includes verification of grafting reactions onto CNC surface via elemental analysis and solid state NMR along with dispersion studies by SEM imaging. The nanocomposite properties are studied with increasing filler content and type of surface modification and a comparison is made with unfilled PLA films. The interphase between the filler and the matrix is studied by evaluating the mechanical properties and trends are established with reference to the graft length. Since year 2000 the enterprises have been asked to evaluate their economic parameters, such as financial standing, turnover and investments. The present situation is compared with the previous 12 months and with expectations for the coming 12 months. The aim is to collect data that are reliable and comparable in the long term. The survey population consists of all fishery sector enterprises on the register of Statistics Finland, i.e. 850-1000 firms every year. The net sample has been 300-400 and the response rate about 80%. The sample has been allocated to fixed quotas to ensure enough observations of all strata. The development and relevance of the barometer are discussed more closely in the paper. This paper presents an analysis of the evolution of profitability in five different quota management areas over the period 1990-2001. The bio-economic model of an optimal fishery provides the basis for econometric analysis. The rate of profit return in each region was regressed on the corresponding real interest rate and the marginal stock effect. Evidence is found for the existence of optimal fishery. In general the half-life value of each region’s rate of profit return is trending towards its mean value. Significant individual monthly effects are also evident when we regress the rate of profit return on a time trend and monthly dummy variables. The results can be divided into fishing, aquaculture, processing, wholesale and retail trade, i.e. to the whole production-processing-commerce chain. In February 2000, the confidence towards coming 12 months in the Finnish fishery enterprises was encouraged. The only sector that had deteriorated during the past year was fishing, however the outlook of fishing for the coming year was more promising. The results are based on a sample of about 300 enterprises representing a survey population of about 1070 fishery enterprises. The reliability of the results is discussed. Africa's contribution to fisheries products (1,5 %) is insignificant compared to that of world commerce which is around 44 millions tons. This deplorable situation is due to a certain number of problems which include s among others, the relative biogenic poverty of African waters, the exploitation of African waters by foreign vessels, the total lack of catches effected by the African vessels out of their regional boundaries, the lack of knowledge on the mastering of commercialisation and on veritable commercial politics of fisheries products, including quality assurance. In addition to this, the almost inexistence of the aquaculture in the sub-Saharan countries. This paper analyses the African fisheries in the whole continent and presents the general characters, notably its evolution, fisheries resources, valorisation and consumption of fisheries products. The global analysis made here accords a priority to markets as well as to the framework of contribution of these products and tries, at the end of the 20th century, to present some trends. Facing the globalisation phenomena, how will African fisheries producers be challenged in the new millennium? As the design of computers advances, two important trends have surfaced: The exploitation of parallelism and the design against memory latency. Into these two new trends has come the Multithreaded Virtual Processor (MVP). Based on a standard superscalar core, the MVP is able to exploit both Instruction Level Parallelism (ILP) and, utilizing the concepts of multithreading, is able to further exploit Thread Level Parallelism (TLP) in program code. By combining both hardware and software multithreading techniques into a new hybrid model, the MVP is able to use fast hardware context switching techniques along with both hardware and software scheduling. The new hybrid creates a processor capable of exploiting long memory latency operations to increase parallelism, while introducing both minimal software overhead and hardware design changes. This thesis will explore the MVP model and simulator and provide results that illustrate MVP's effectiveness and demonstrate its recommendation to be included in future processor designs. Additionally, the thesis will show that MVP's effectiveness is governed by four main considerations: (1) The data set size relative to the cache size, (2) the number of hardware contexts/threads supported, (3) the amount of locality within the data sets, and (4) the amount of exploitable parallelism within the algorithms.
