Amphibians are undergoing large worldwide declines, which include declines in protected areas, such as our National Parks. Our goal is to better understand the effect of historically stocked fish in Olympic National Park on native amphibian Hg bioaccumulation. To minimize the need for lethal sampling of this already threatened group, we first examine how Hg concentrations in non-lethally sampled amphibian tissues correlated with whole-body Hg concentrations, depending on species and the different type of non-lethal tissue sample used. Second, we aimed to understand how a food web altered by fish impacted Hg bioaccumulation in native species. We measured Hg and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen in organisms across trophic levels from 18 subalpine lakes. We detected small shifts in salamander food web indices and minor changes to salamander Hg concentration associated with the presence of fish. Importantly, we found increased mercury trophic magnification slopes in lakes with fish compared to fishless lakes. This research provides evidence that historic fish introductions can elevate mercury exposure in pristine ecosystems compared to natural fishless lakes. We are at risk of losing the sagebrush steppe in the floristic Great Basin to the invasion of Bromus tectorum L., cheatgrass. The floristic Great Basin includes the Central Basin and Range, the Northern Basin and Range, and the Snake River Plain. The Great Basin receives most of its precipitation as winter snow and experiences hot and dry summers. Early accounts of invasion by cheatgrass associated it with farming and grazing practices. The non-farmed areas in the region are still actively grazed and referred to as rangelands. On invaded sites, cheatgrass changes the flammability of fuels on invaded landscapes, across the Great Basin, from coarser fuels that are widely spaced to fine fuels that are continuous, filling interspaces between perennial plants. The fuel load created by cheatgrass regenerates annually. This has resulted in a change in the fire regime of the Great Basin from infrequent, small fires to more frequent large fires. In arid lands globally, soil interspaces between perennial plants are typically filled by biological soil crusts (biocrusts). This is also true for ecoregions in and surrounding the Great Basin. Biocrusts are known to influence many ecosystem processes that cheatgrass influences, specifically nutrient cycling and availability of soil moisture. However, little work has been done on biocrusts of the Great Basin and to my knowledge, no one had restored biocrusts within the Great Basin. I attempt to fill some of this knowledge "interspace" by relating biocrust presence to disturbances and cheatgrass invasion and to demonstrate the potential for biocrust restoration within this region. Previous work in eastern Oregon demonstrated relationships between declines in biocrusts and increases in cheatgrass with increasing grazing intensity, soil temperature, and decreasing soil moisture. Grazing intensity influences the cover of biocrusts as well as the abundance and composition of native bunchgrasses. Native bunchgrasses influence the interspace gap size between perennial herbaceous vegetation which is directly associated with the cover of cheatgrass. In a region where grazing records may be incomplete and may exist in various forms of data, having a simple indicator of grazing impacts would be useful. It is also crucial that we have an understanding of what leads to loss of site resistance to cheatgrass. This previous work suggested that cover of biocrusts, in addition to bunchgrass composition, were associated with increased site resistance to cheatgrass. In Chapter 2, I used current grazing records from a range of suspected grazing intensities, to examine the ability of both biocrusts and perennial vegetation to maintain site resistance to cheatgrass after fire. I examined the ability of mosses and lichens to maintain site resistance separately given that these are two very different kinds of organisms. Mosses are non-vascular plants and early colonizers of sites in primary succession. Lichens have a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and a photosynthesizing partner, a cyanobacteria, an algae or both. Using structural equation models, I corroborated that perennial vegetation and lichens are associated with increased site resistance to cheatgrass and that mosses are associated with and may facilitate both lichens and perennial herbaceous vegetation. Also in Chapter 2, I identified that burned sites were associated with increased grazing pressure by livestock as shown by increases in cow dung density and increases in gap size between perennial herbaceous vegetation. The Great Basin is managed for cover of perennial vegetation but it could also be managed for morphogroups of biocrusts. Considering morphogroups of biocrusts, which were shown in the Chapter 2 to be important for site resilience and resistance, I wanted to determine if there were site characteristics associated with biocrust distribution and recovery from disturbance, across the Great Basin. Outside of the Great Basin on the Columbia Plateau, others had found that mosses were still present on disturbed sites whereas lichens were often lost. In addition, biocrust species were more associated with soil properties than with grazing by livestock. Given that grazing by livestock and fire are common disturbances across the region, I wanted to know if the same relationships between biocrusts, soil properties and disturbance were true in the Great Basin. I found that cover of the lichen component of biocrusts was higher on sites that were both ungrazed and unburned. Factors related to disturbance characteristics were correlated with the recovery of biocrusts, even after accounting for time since fire. Factors related to disturbance, a composite of grazing and fire, were more important for structuring the cover and composition of morphogroups as opposed to environmental conditions. Lichens were the most sensitive morphogroup, compared to tall mosses, followed by short mosses which were favored by some disturbance but reduced in cover immediately after fire. Perennial grasses were also favored by some disturbance and perennial forbs did not show an obvious relationship with a disturbance gradient. Chapter 3 highlights that grazing by livestock and fire are common disturbances across the region so much so that the effects of one on the abundances of morphogroups could not be separated from the other. Given the observed contributions of biocrusts to site resilience and resistance, I wanted to know if we could restore biocrusts in the field. Others have grown mosses in a lab setting but this was the first study to restore mosses in the Great Basin. I tested the influence of factors that are commonly used in the field of restoration for facilitating plant establishment. I tested the influence of season of inoculation (fall versus spring), the addition of organic matter (in the form of jute net), irrigation (in the spring season) and the climatic setting of moss the collection sites (for moss propagation), in comparison to the experiment site (warm, dry versus cool, moist) on moss growth. I used two moss species: a ruderal (Bryum argenteum) and a later successional species (Syntrichia ruralis). Moss cover increased when the climatic setting of the collection site matched the experiment site. Mosses were facilitated by the addition of the organic jute netting, putting on most of their growth in winter. Although there is still a great deal of work to be done developing moss material for restoration and working out inoculation rates of moss fragments, similar to seeding rates, land managers have another tool to consider when rehabilitating sites after disturbance. Managing the Great Basin for biocrusts in the presence of grazing and fire will not only increase site resistance to cheatgrass but it will add to the conservation of ecosystem functions related to nutrient cycling, hydrologic cycling and soil erosion. Site resistance will be improved with increased periods of rest from grazing following fire. The lichen component of biocrusts is a more sensitive indicator of disturbance when compared with mosses or perennial vegetation but we are currently actively managing for perennial vegetation and not biocrusts. This document is the 1998 annual progress report for studies of Pacific lampreys (Lampetra tridentata) conducted by the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, and University of Minnesota (U of M). Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) funded activities through Project 94-026. The Pacific Lamprey Research and Restoration Project began after completion of a status report of Pacific lamprey in the Columbia River in 1995. The project started as a cooperative effort between the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (CRITFC), and Oregon State University (OSU). Lamprey are a valuable subsistence food and cultural resource for Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest. The once abundant Pacific lampreys above Bonneville Dam are currently depressed (Close et al. 1995). Declines in Pacific lampreys have impacted treaty secured fishing opportunities by limiting tribal members catch and access to Pacific lampreys in the interior Columbia basin. Tribal members now harvest lampreys in lower Columbia River locations such as Willamette Falls near Oregon City, Oregon. Pacific lampreys are also an important part of the food web of North Pacific ecosystems, both as predator (Beamish 1980; Pike 1951; Roos and Gillohousin 1973), and prey (Semekula and Larkin 1968; Galbreath 1979; Roffe and Mate 1984; Merrell 1959; Wolf and Jones 1989) and as a vehicle for recruitment of marine nutrients. The decline of Pacific lampreys in the interior Columbia River basin has become a major concern. Effective recovery measures for Pacific lampreys can only be developed after we increase our knowledge of the biology and factors that are limiting the various life history stages. Prior to developing a restoration plan, we have carried out studies to review status, distribution, abundance, homing ability, and stock structure. These studies will culminate in the development and implementation of a restoration plan for the Umatilla River. Multiple pass electrofishing surveys to assess densities and distribution of lamprey larvae in the Umatilla River were conducted in 1998. Electrofishing surveys in the Umatilla River are useful for baseline comparison. Forty-two index sites were sampled from the mouth to river kilometer (RK) 124. Lamprey larvae were found in 4 of the 42 index plots. All sites with larvae were found at and below RK 9.3. Nine larvae were captured during the surveys. However, no larvae were caught on the second pass in each plot. Pacific lamprey larvae and adult lampreys were studied to determine their ability to produce and detect pheromones. Larval gall bladders were removed and gall bladder fluid was extracted and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Adult lampreys ability to detect pheromones were tested using electro-olfactogram (EOG) methods. Fifteen compounds including Petromyzonol sulfate (PS), a migratory pheromone found in sea lamprey larvae (Petromyzon marinus) (Li et al. 1995) were tested. Larval lampreys produced large amounts of (PS). Adult Pacific lamprey can detect PS and have an olfactory sensitivity to pheromones that is similar to sea lampreys. iv Pacific lamprey abundance, as indexed by fish ladder counts in 1998, was; Bonneville 37,478; The Dalles 7,665; John Day 12,579; McNary 3,393; Ice Harbor 763; Lower Monumental 69; Little Goose 90; Lower Granite 110; Rock Island 1,410; and Rock Reach 819 dams, respectively. Enumerating Pacific lamprey at counting stations remained extremely problematic, since excessive up- and downstream movement at the counting windows reduces the confidence in fish ladder passage estimates. This may be an indication of passage problems encountered by Pacific lampreys. In-season homing of Pacific lamprey was studied using radio telemetry. Pacific lampery were captured at Willamette Falls and Bonneville Dam, outfitted with radio transmitters and released approximately 26 km downstream of the Willamette River confluence. A total of 50 fish were instrumented. Results will be presented in next year’s report. Natal homing was also investigated using mtDNA analysis of fish captured at Bonneville Dam and from Willamette Falls. These results will also be presented next year. We collected lamprey tissues, from fish captured in several locations throughout the Columbia River Basin, to develop a genetic database for use in determining population structure. Additional samples for populations outside the Columbia River Basin were used to scale the results. Results from this investigation will be presented in next year’s annual report. Since the initiation of the CTUIR lamprey research and restoration project, additional lamprey studies have been proposed that have created uncertainties regarding the prioritization of projects and needs of lampreys. At the request of the Northwest Power Planning Council, a multi-agency Pacific lamprey technical workgroup (TWG) was established in 1996. This document is the 1998 annual progress report for studies of Pacific lampreys (Lampetra tridentata) conducted by the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, and University of Minnesota (U of M). Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) funded activities through Project 94-026. The Pacific Lamprey Research and Restoration Project began after completion of a status report of Pacific lamprey in the Columbia River in 1995. The project started as a cooperative effort between the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (CRITFC), and Oregon State University (OSU). Lamprey are a valuable subsistence food and cultural resource for Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest. The once abundant Pacific lampreys above Bonneville Dam are currently depressed (Close et al. 1995). Declines in Pacific lampreys have impacted treaty secured fishing opportunities by limiting tribal members catch and access to Pacific lampreys in the interior Columbia basin. Tribal members now harvest lampreys in lower Columbia River locations such as Willamette Falls near Oregon City, Oregon. Pacific lampreys are also an important part of the food web of North Pacific ecosystems, both as predator (Beamish 1980; Pike 1951; Roos and Gillohousin 1973), and prey (Semekula and Larkin 1968; Galbreath 1979; Roffe and Mate 1984; Merrell 1959; Wolf and Jones 1989) and as a vehicle for recruitment of marine nutrients. The decline of Pacific lampreys in the interior Columbia River basin has become a major concern. Effective recovery measures for Pacific lampreys can only be developed after we increase our knowledge of the biology and factors that are limiting the various life history stages. Prior to developing a restoration plan, we have carried out studies to review status, distribution, abundance, homing ability, and stock structure. These studies will culminate in the development and implementation of a restoration plan for the Umatilla River. Multiple pass electrofishing surveys to assess densities and distribution of lamprey larvae in the Umatilla River were conducted in 1998. Electrofishing surveys in the Umatilla River are useful for baseline comparison. Forty-two index sites were sampled from the mouth to river kilometer (RK) 124. Lamprey larvae were found in 4 of the 42 index plots. All sites with larvae were found at and below RK 9.3. Nine larvae were captured during the surveys. However, no larvae were caught on the second pass in each plot. Pacific lamprey larvae and adult lampreys were studied to determine their ability to produce and detect pheromones. Larval gall bladders were removed and gall bladder fluid was extracted and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Adult lampreys ability to detect pheromones were tested using electro-olfactogram (EOG) methods. Fifteen compounds including Petromyzonol sulfate (PS), a migratory pheromone found in sea lamprey larvae (Petromyzon marinus) (Li et al. 1995) were tested. Larval lampreys produced large amounts of (PS). Adult Pacific lamprey can detect PS and have an olfactory sensitivity to pheromones that is similar to sea lampreys. iv Pacific lamprey abundance, as indexed by fish ladder counts in 1998, was; Bonneville 37,478; The Dalles 7,665; John Day 12,579; McNary 3,393; Ice Harbor 763; Lower Monumental 69; Little Goose 90; Lower Granite 110; Rock Island 1,410; and Rock Reach 819 dams, respectively. Enumerating Pacific lamprey at counting stations remained extremely problematic, since excessive up- and downstream movement at the counting windows reduces the confidence in fish ladder passage estimates. This may be an indication of passage problems encountered by Pacific lampreys. In-season homing of Pacific lamprey was studied using radio telemetry. Pacific lampery were captured at Willamette Falls and Bonneville Dam, outfitted with radio transmitters and released approximately 26 km downstream of the Willamette River confluence. A total of 50 fish were instrumented. Results will be presented in next year’s report. Natal homing was also investigated using mtDNA analysis of fish captured at Bonneville Dam and from Willamette Falls. These results will also be presented next year. We collected lamprey tissues, from fish captured in several locations throughout the Columbia River Basin, to develop a genetic database for use in determining population structure. Additional samples for populations outside the Columbia River Basin were used to scale the results. Results from this investigation will be presented in next year’s annual report. Since the initiation of the CTUIR lamprey research and restoration project, additional lamprey studies have been proposed that have created uncertainties regarding the prioritization of projects and needs of lampreys. The effects of post-wildfire salvage-logging and grass-seeding on vegetation composition, aboveground biomass, and growth and survival of Pinus ponderosa and Purshia tridentata were quantified on the area burned by the 1992 Lone Pine Fire, Winema National Forest in the Klamath Basin, Oregon. Prior to the fire, the area was dominated by uneven-aged stands of Pinus ponderosa with Purshia tridentata and Stipa occidentalis in the understory. The fire was a stand-replacement disturbance, where the majority of trees, the herbaceous component, and crowns of understory shrubs were killed. Salvage logging resulted in a significant decrease in understory biomass, species richness, species diversity, and growth and survival of P. ponderosa and P. tridentata. In addition plant community composition was shifted from native forb dominance to grass dominance. In 1993, the understory biomass of salvage-logged sites was 38% of the aboveground biomass produced on nonsalvaged sites (322 kg ha^-1 vs 843 kg ha^-1). In 1994, salvage-logged sites produced only 27% of the biomass produced on nonsalvaged sites (402 kg ha^-1 vs 1468 kg ha^-1). Salvage-logging reduced species richness, species diversity, and altered species composition. The first and second years following logging, species richness was reduced by 13% (20 versus 23), and 30% (15 versus 22), respectively. In 1993 and 1994, native forb frequency on nonsalvaged sites was 80% and 77% respectively, while salvage-logged sites recorded 68% and 31% respectively. Conversely, graminoid frequency was significantly higher on salvage-logged sites. In 1994, native graminoid frequency was 35% in nonsalvaged sites and > 61% on salvage-logged sites. During the first two years following salvage-logging, mean height growth of naturally-regenerated Pinus ponderosa was significantly lower on salvaged sites (9.4 versus 7.8 cm yr^-1) as was density of natural Purshia tridentata seedlings (313 versus 530 seedlings ha^-1). Survival in salvage-logged treatments was 22% lower for planted Purshia tridentata seedlings (57% versus 45%). Height growth in salvage-logged treatments was 16% lower for planted Pinus ponderosa (4.4 versus 3.7 cm). Total aboveground biomass on nonsalvaged burned sites (controls) averaged 843 kg ha^-1 in 1993, and 1473 kg ha^-1 in 1994. In 1993, the first year following the fire, sites seeded to Secale cereale produced = 1995 kg ha^-1 total aboveground biomass; most of the biomass was S. cereale. Those seeded sites produced 89% less native forb biomass than controls (82 versus 780 kg ha^-1), and = 80% less native forb biomass than areas seeded to the native grasses Sitanion hystrix and Festuca idahoensis.
