These surveys were commissioned by the Midcoast Watershed Council, using funds granted by GWEB. The intent of these surveys was to begin to develop a base line for monitoring trends in the distribution and abundance of juvenile Coho, Steelhead and Cutthroat in Midcoast watersheds. Adult Coho escapement for many of these basins has hovered near all time low levels for multiple brood cycles. These surveys intend to identify the core areas within these basins that, at low spawner densities, provide suitable spawning habitats. They also intend to identify areas important for juvenile salmonid rearing such that restoration activities can focus on recovering reaches that adult salmonids are returning to. This stream is a 4th order contributor to Rock Creek, which joins the Siletz River near Logsden, Oregon. The stream has been prioritized for restoration by the Midcoast Watershed Council because it appears to provide the best remaining spawning and rearing potential within the Rock Cr. basin. The report contains information on the physical setting, current status of Coho, resources used in developing the plan, general questions that guided the assessment, pre-survey mapping/location of habitat subdivisions, secondary branch habitats, critical contributing areas, lowland area, summer and winter habitat assessment, lake habitat, location of other resources, juvenile Coho, evaluation of habitat quality and Coho production, Field Assessment, location of potential migration barriers, potential sites for restoration work, morphology, rank of restoration efforts, riparian corridor, and core area.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Clear and Foster Creek Watershed Assessment Abstract -- A watershed assessment was completed in the Clear and Foster Creek watersheds to evaluate existing conditions and make recommendations to protect or enhance watershed natural resources. Clear and Foster Creek are tributaries to the Clackamas River below any major dams on the system; consequently these tributaries are positioned favorably to contribute to recovery of important anadromous fish populations. Anadromous fish species in the Clackamas basin include spring and fall chinook, coho salmon, winter steelhead, summer steelhead (non-native), migratory cutthroat trout and lamprey. Clear and Foster Creeks are utilized by fall chinook, winter steelhead and coho salmon. The assessment generally followed the framework described in the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board’s Watershed Assessment Manual (WPN, 1999). The assessment focused on the following components: Channel habitat classification and modification; hydrology and water use; riparian/wetlands; sediment sources; water quality; fisheries; and wildlife and upland vegetation. Generally the approach builds on existing information, and enhances this information with aerial photo interpretation and limited field checking. Additional fieldwork was used to verify channel habitat types and to characterize fish habitat condition. GIS was used as a critical assessment tool and method of displaying results. All of these are located in Northwestern Wasco County, Oregon. Mosier and Rock Creeks both have some headwaters in Hood River County. All three enter the Columbia River in or near the City of Mosier, Oregon. The assessment was coordinated by Wasco County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) at the request of the Mosier Watershed Council. The assessment looks not only at the health of perennial streams, but also at the health of major seasonal reaches and upland areas, focusing on water quality and quantity issues, with their effects on aquatic habitat. Upland habitat is also addressed, but wildlife populations are not. The assessment contains sections on: description of the watershed, watershed conditions at the time of settlement, climate, history, channel habitat type classification, hydrology and water use, riparian and wetlands condition, sediment sources, channel modification, water quality, fish and fish habitat, upland habitat, and evaluation.
