Humpback whales feed on a variety of small patchy prey, and as large predators could play an integral role in marine group foraging. Using video-tag data I analyzed the frequency humpback whales engaged in group foraging, and the patterns in prey type, foraging techniques, and other predators present. Results showed humpback whales participate in various foraging groups by location. The increased proportion of group bubble net feeding may indicate that humpback whales aid other air-breathing predators in the group by acting as beaters. This study serves as a preliminary investigation into humpback whales’ roles in group foraging utilizing subsurface observations. Future research may aim to develop broader spatial and temporal patterns, and compare these patterns to other marine and terrestrial mixed foraging groups. Improving our understanding of these processes requires an enhanced awareness of how global ecosystems are changing and how these changes affect the global carbon cycle. Tropical ecosystems are considered crucial to the global carbon budget, and more reliable data on the rates and extent of land cover and land use changes in these ecosystems are needed to reduce the uncertainty of global carbon flux estimates. Spatially explicit and repeatable observations from remotely sensed data offer the best opportunity for monitoring the rapid changes taking place over large spatial scales in tropical ecosystems. As an important regional case study among global-wide efforts to understand land cover and land use change and its effects on terrestrial carbon dynamics, the objective of this research was to develop and test models based on high temporal frequency MODIS data for monitoring land cover changes and modeling associated carbon flux over tropical Central America. The first chapter introduces the issue involved with the development of a methodology for scaling observations of changes in tropical forest cover to large areas at high temporal frequency from coarse resolution satellite imagery. The approach for estimating proportional forest cover change as a continuous variable was based on a regression model that relates multi-spectral, multi-temporal MODIS data, transformed to optimize the spectral detection of vegetation changes, to reference change data sets derived from a Landsat data record for an individual study site. Chapter 2 reports on a series of fundamental analyses designed to test and compare the utility of various MODIS data and products for expanding the forest cover change models over multiple study sites and time periods. The study described in Chapter 3 integrates satellite-derived data sets on land cover and land use change with field-based parameters on terrestrial carbon stocks and flux in a simple accounting model to track carbon dynamics associated with these changes. Studies have shown that lichens and bryophytes can reduce soil erosion and increase soil fertility in other semiarid habitats of North America. Understanding the particular roles terrestrial lichens and bryophytes play in their ecosystems and how they react to anthropogenic disturbances is part of making sound management decisions. Managers in the Blue Mountains are now dealing with heavy fuel loads in forested habitats that were impacted by mountain pine beetles, western spruce budworm infestations, Douglas fir dwarf mistletoe, and drought from the 1970's into the 1990's. To better understand how cryptogam communities respond to fuels reduction treatments in insect impacted Abies grandis classified forests of the central Blue Mountains, we compared species composition of logged and burned stands to stands that have not been treated in forty years. We found early colonizing species to be much more frequent in treated sites (logged and burned) while later seral species occurred more often in untreated stands. Because untreated stands had more microsite heterogeneity (coarse woody debris as well as bare soils) there was generally a higher diversity of species than in treated sites. A comparison of the composition of cryptogam communities in these degraded forests to 'healthy' stands in the central Blue Mountains is difficult because unaffected stands are scarce and literature on such communities previous to the insect epidemics is lacking. To get a better idea of the potential that exists for terrestrial lichen and bryophyte community composition, this research was expanded to other common upland habitats in the area. In total 53 sites in five different plant community types were investigated (Abies grandis, Pinus ponderosa, Pinus contorta, Poa secunda grasslands, and Artemisia rigida steppe). Lichen and bryophyte composition and environmental characteristics were compared across sites using multivariate analyses. This research has provided some basic information on community composition in upland habitats of the Blue Mountains. Soil characteristics had the strongest correlation to community composition. Habitats with sparsely vegetated, shallow, rocky soils (bunchgrass, Artemisia rigida, Pinus ponderosa) had very different cryptogam presence than those with deep soils covered by coarse woody debris and denser vegetation (Abies grandis and Pinus contorta forests). While investigating dry bunchgrass habitat of the region an unattached form of Grimmia ovalis was found on many sites with shallow soils and sparse vegetation. Although this moss is commonly known on rock in western North America, it has not yet been reported as unattached in North America. It has, however, been recorded from Africa and Venezuela. Unattached mosses, or moss balls, form when a force, such as frost heaving, cleaves a moss clump from a substrate. That same force, or another, will rotate the clump exposing alternating sides to growth. The formation of moss balls in northeast Oregon are likely created by freeze thaw cycles. More research on their biology and habitat is needed to verify this theory. Finally, we discuss how model diversity came about in the past and could evolve in the future. Throughout our study, we use analogies from biodiversity research to analyse and interpret model diversity. We recommend to make models publicly available through open-source policies, to standardize documentation and technical implementation of models, and to compare models through ensemble modelling and interdisciplinary approaches. We end with our perspective on how the field of aquatic ecosystem modelling might develop in the next 5–10 years. To strive for clarity and to improve readability for non-modellers, we include a glossary. This dissertation explored novel statistical methods for understanding the response of multiple forest taxa to variable-retention harvesting. Excessive zero counts are common among terrestrial small mammal species that are captured infrequently. Zero-inflated and hurdle models are appealing tools for analyzing these data. A simulation was performed to understand the properties and robustness of these models. When true mean abundance was low, the estimated parameters from these models were highly unstable. Goodness of fit criteria could not discern among the processes generating the data. The Poisson and negative binomial Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) were fitted to four small mammal species with different rates of capture. Predictors included several variables representing vegetation structure. These models and overdispersed Poisson were then specified as Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs) to account for nesting and blocking in the experimental design. The fitted GLMs indicated that predictors were not consistent among models for the infrequently captured species. Differences in estimated coefficients between GLMs and GLMMs were noticeable. The overdispersed Poisson GLMM was suggested to be most suitable. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is suitable for modeling interactions of many cause-and-effect relationships in forest ecosystems. SEM was applied to understand overstory-understory relationships of late-seral herb species under mature forest conditions and immediately after variable-retention harvesting. In undisturbed forests, light attenuation, belowground competition and stand age were the primary drivers of late-seral herb cover. After variable-retention harvesting, microclimatic stresses were inferred to primarily affect late-seral species diversity and composition. Logging debris had little discernible effect on the change in the late-seral herb community. The explored statistical models complement conventional methods for studying the effects of variable-retention harvesting. These models address distributional issues of response data and provide further insight into the complex processes driving managed forest ecosystems. Although studies in freshwater ecosystems have received recent attention, research has rarely considered the potential trade-offs between protecting different dimensions of biodiversity and the ecological processes that maintain diversity. We provide the first systematic prioritization for freshwaters (focusing on the highly threatened and globally distinct fish fauna of the Lower Colorado River Basin, USA) simultaneously considering scenarios of: taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity; contemporary threats to biodiversity (including interactions with nonnative species); and future climate change and human population growth. There was 75% congruence between areas of highest conservation priority for different aspects of biodiversity, suggesting that conservation efforts can concurrently achieve strong complementarity among all types of diversity. However, sizable fractions of the landscape were incongruent across conservation priorities for different diversity scenarios, underscoring the importance of considering multiple dimensions of biodiversity and highlighting catchments that contribute disproportionately to taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity in the region. Regions of projected human population growth were not concordant with conservation priorities; however, higher human population abundance will likely have indirect effects on native biodiversity by increasing demand for water. This will come in direct conflict with projected reductions in precipitation and warmer temperatures, which have substantial overlap with regions of high contemporary diversity. Native and endemic fishes in arid ecosystems are critically endangered by both current and future threats, but our results highlight the use of systematic conservation planning for the optimal allocation of limited resources that incorporates multiple and complementary conservation values describing taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity. Title: Defining Conservation Priorities for Freshwater Fishes According to Taxonomic, Functional, and Phylogenetic Diversity Author: Strecker, Angela L., Olden, Julian D., Whittier, Joanna B., Paukert, Craig Patrick Year: 2011 To date, the predominant use of systematic conservation planning has been to evaluate and conserve areas of high terrestrial biodiversity. Although studies in freshwater ecosystems have received recent attention, research has rarely considered the potential trade-offs between protecting different dimensions of biodiversity and the ecological processes that maintain diversity. We provide the first systematic prioritization for freshwaters (focusing on the highly threatened and globally distinct fish fauna of the Lower Colorado River Basin, USA) simultaneously considering scenarios of: taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity; contemporary threats to biodiversity (including interactions with nonnative species); and future climate change and human population growth. There was 75% congruence between areas of highest conservation priority for different aspects of biodiversity, suggesting that conservation efforts can concurrently achieve strong complementarity among all types of diversity. However, sizable fractions of the landscape were incongruent across conservation priorities for different diversity scenarios, underscoring the importance of considering multiple dimensions of biodiversity and highlighting catchments that contribute disproportionately to taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity in the region. Regions of projected human population growth were not concordant with conservation priorities; however, higher human population abundance will likely have indirect effects on native biodiversity by increasing demand for water. This will come in direct conflict with projected reductions in precipitation and warmer temperatures, which have substantial overlap with regions of high contemporary diversity. Native and endemic fishes in arid ecosystems are critically endangered by both current and future threats, but our results highlight the use of systematic conservation planning for the optimal allocation of limited resources that incorporates multiple and complementary conservation values describing taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity. Three annually repeated terrestrial LiDAR scans were compared to determine the rates of ground surface change caused by thermokarst formation on the stream bank. The areal extent of the thermokarst was shown to be decreasing; however, the average vertical rate of retreat remained constant. Field measurements of bed materials indicated that the west branch and the reach downstream of the confluence (of east and west branches) consistently contained more fines than the unaffected east branch. This suggests that the finer bed material is a result of the thermokarst development on the west branch. These finer bed material compositions are likely to increase the mobility of the bed material, which will have implications for stream morphology, stream algal mat communities, and downstream aquatic ecosystems. We describe plant resource management practices and the diverse methods used to identify them, and focus on three case studies to augment this description. These case studies exemplify the range of plants and ecosystems that were managed as well as the combinations of strategies and outcomes encompassed within these systems. While we focus our review on coastal British Columbia, we recognize that these are practices that occurred throughout northwestern North America. We also recognize that plant management is nested within a larger continuum of management practices that encompassed terrestrial and aquatic animals and their ecosystems (Carpenter, Humchitt, and Eldridge 2000; Lepofsky and Caldwell in press; Thornton et al. 2010). We end this summary with a discussion of how traditional and “new” management approaches introduced by European newcomers were integrated into “moditional management systems,” and we identify some of the more recent trends in the study of Indigenous management systems. Since Euro-American settlement in the West, the structure and condition of many riparian ecosystems has been significantly altered. To provide tools and an ecological perspective related to riparian restoration and management, and to document late 20th century headwater riparian structure and biomass in the Upper Grande Ronde Basin, this research project was undertaken. At Meadow Creek, the response of riparian hardwood species to the termination of livestock grazing was quantified. Regression equations were developed to predict shrub biomass. Permanently marked hardwood plants were measured annually to quantify parameters of growth (height, crown area, mainstem diameter, number of stems, biomass). Permanent belt transects on gravel bars were utilized to quantify rates of shrub establishment. Elk/deer-proof exclosures allowed the quantification of the browsing influence of wild ungulates. In 1991, initial shrub heights and densities reflected decades of grazing pressure. Mean heights of515 woody plants (14 species) was 47 cm and densities on gravel bars averaged 10.7 plants/100m². After two seasons without livestock grazing, mean crown volumes of willows (Salix spp.) increased 550% inside of wild ungulate exclosures and 195% outside, black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa) 773% inside and 808% outside, and thin-leaf alder (Almis incana) 1046% inside and 198% outside, respectively. Resource partitioning could facilitate coexistence by allowing each species exclusive access to some resources. My research examines the correlations between the use of spatial resources by giant otters and humans and the hydrological pulse of their ecosystem. My objectives were (1) to estimate the extent of terrestrial and aquatic habitat available for giant otters and humans;(2) to recognize the main patterns of space occupancy and its overlap between them; (3)to explain these patterns in relation to natural gradients in the watershed; (4) to describe the giant otter’s diet; and (5) to depict the foraging activities of giant otters and humans relative to the distribution of prey. Between October 2004 and March 2005, I surveyed the Jatuncocha and Tambococha Creeks (Yasuní National Park) for direct and indirect signs of giant otters and humans, and I collected giant otter scat. Habitat availability was estimated by a geo-referenced map model that integrated virtual and field data, portraying four seasonal scenarios. Space use overlaps between giant otters and humans are a function of water level and the distance between terrestrial and aquatic habitats. The floodplain comprises 43% of the total study area during the flooding season, and is reduced to 25% of the total area at minimum water levels. Polygons obtained containing suitable habitat for giant otters are in average 41% larger than those obtained for humans; these contain areas that are inaccessible to humans (isolated pools and swamps, tributaries, and the upper portions of the main channel). Differences in space availability for and use by giant otters and humans depend on water level fluctuations. Area occupancy by both species is proportional to the estimated availability; but more so for giant otters, as humans increase area occupancy during the driest periods. Giant otter activity was primarily concentrated around the largest tributaries of each creek, and secondarily wherever the distance between suitable terrestrial and aquatic habitat was smaller. Human activity signs were distributed along the hydrographical gradient, i.e. in the lower portion of the Jatuncocha System (lagoon) or in the middle portion of the Tambococha Creek (large tributary). To identify correlations between habitat use by giant otters and humans and prey availability, I analyzed scat samples and collected fish along several creek stretches. Giant otters consumed at least 47 of the 73 species available for them. This study identified the response of zooplankton communities from two lakes (fish present vs. absent) in Mount Rainier National Park to manipulations simulating an episodic disturbance event in mesocosms. The experiment used a 2 x 2 factorial design with acid and nitrogen treatments. Treatments resulted in significantly elevated nitrogen and decreased pH conditions from control mesocosms over 42 days, indicating that the treatment effects were achieved. Results indicate that zooplankton communities from lakes with different food web structure respond differently to the singular effects of acid and nitrogen addition. Surprisingly, the interaction of the two stressors was related to increases in community metrics (e.g., abundance, biomass, body size, richness, and Shannon-Weiner diversity) for both lake types. Streams are important features in the landscape for N cycling, because they integrate many sources of terrestrially derived N and control export to downgradient systems via internal source and sink processes. N transformations in stream ecosystems are typically very complex due to spatiotemporal variability in the factors controlling N biogeochemistry. Thus, it is difficult to predict if a particular stream system will function as a net source or sink of bioavailable N. A key location for N transformations in stream ecosystems is the hyporheic zone, where stream and ground waters mix. The hyporheic zone can be a source of bioavailable N via nitrification or a sink via denitrification. These N transformations are regulated by the physical and biogeochemical conditions of hyporheic zones. Natural heterogeneity in streams leads to unique combinations of both the physical and biogeochemical conditions which in turn result in unique N source and sink conditions. This dissertation investigates the relationships between physical and biogeochemical controls and the resulting fate of bioavailable N in hyporheic zones. The key physical factor investigated is the supply rate of solutes which is a function of transport processes - advection and dispersion, and transport conditions - hydraulic conductivity and flowpath length. Different physical conditions result in different characteristic residence times of water and solutes in hyporheic zones. To investigate the broad evolutionary implications of this newfound complexity in moss sexual reproduction, I tested classic tenets of plant-pollinator theory on the ancient mosses and their ubiquitous microarthropod inhabitants. Experimental results show that mosses and microarthropods are engaged in a "pollination-like" syndrome guided by sex-specific volatile cues that differentially affect microarthropod behavior. These data indicate an existing complex mutualistic relationship and provides new evidence of sexually dimorphic investment by male and female mosses into reproductive success. Further, these data put forth the idea that female mosses challenge an inherent mate limitation by investing into reproductive assurance via maintaining a relationship with microarthropods. Experimental work further confirms a role for invertebrates in moss reproductive success and tests mutualism theory through ongoing experiments. Such experiments include an assessment of moss genetic diversity, paternity, and male fitness traits as it relates to mosses with or without the presence of microarthropods, thereby testing for fitness benefits gained by mosses possibly engaged in a transport mutualism with microarthropods. I further tested mutualism, community ecology and moss sexual reproduction concepts in extreme geothermal moss populations living at the edges of inhabitable Earth, and results show that even geothermal moss canopies are diverse and host differential and abundant life. In a first field test of mutualism I found that although extreme heat stress may constrain sexual reproduction in mosses, a correlation between within-population moss genetic diversity and microarthropod abundances exists. To further examine mosses in extreme environments, and how these environments may constrain sexual reproductive success, I evaluated the effects of simulated warming on Antarctic moss physiology and reproductive biology. Data indicates that simulated warming relieves mosses of physiological stress, and results in a greater investment into primary productivity and sexual reproduction. These data support the hypothesis that with less stress, sexual reproduction is increased. In sampling conducted once every two months over a two-year comparative study, we found that soil carbon dioxide flux (range: 8000–64 800 kg CO2·ha-1· yr-1) comprised 66–100% of total greenhouse gas emissions from all sites and that methane emissions (range: -6.87 to 197 kg CH4·ha-1·yr-1) were highest from permanently inundated sites, while nitrous oxide fluxes (range: -1.07 to 139 kg N2O·ha-1·yr-1) were highest in sites with lower water tables. Contrary to predictions, greenhouse gas fluxes (as CO2 equivalents) from the restored wetland were lower than from either agricultural fields or unmanaged forested wetlands. Year: 2011 The aquarium trade moves thousands of species around the globe, and unwanted organisms may be released into freshwaters, with adverse ecological and economic effects. We report on the first investigation of the ornamental pet trade as an invasion pathway in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, where a moderate climate and a large human population present ample opportunities for the introduction and establishment of aquarium trade species. Results from a regional survey of pet stores found that the number of fish (n=400) and plant (n=124) species currently in the aquarium trade is vast. Pet stores import thousands of fish every month, the majority of which (58%) are considered to pose an ecological threat to native ecosystems. Our propagule pressure model suggests that approximately 2,500 fish (maximum 21,000 individuals) are likely released annually to the Puget Sound region by aquarists, and that water temperatures in many parts of Washington are suitable for establishment of populations. In conclusion, the aquarium trade may be a significant source of past and future invasions in the Pacific Northwest, and we recommend enhanced public education programs, greater regulation of the aquarium industry, and improved legislation of nonnative species in the ornamental trade. We report on the first investigation of the ornamental pet trade as an invasion pathway in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, where a moderate climate and a large human population present ample opportunities for the introduction and establishment of aquarium trade species. Results from a regional survey of pet stores found that the number of fish (n=400) and plant (n=124) species currently in the aquarium trade is vast. Pet stores import thousands of fish every month, the majority of which (58%) are considered to pose an ecological threat to native ecosystems. Our propagule pressure model suggests that approximately 2,500 fish (maximum 21,000 individuals) are likely released annually to the Puget Sound region by aquarists, and that water temperatures in many parts of Washington are suitable for establishment of populations. In conclusion, the aquarium trade may be a significant source of past and future invasions in the Pacific Northwest, and we recommend enhanced public education programs, greater regulation of the aquarium industry, and improved legislation of nonnative species in the ornamental trade.
