  	Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Current Research Profile for Alaska Author: Information Services , Arctic Environmental Information and Data Center, University of Alaska, Anchorage Year: 1978 This is the fifth edition of the Current Research Profile for Alaska, which lists research in the physical, biological, and related social science's conducted during 1977. Research abstracts were obtained by contacting principal investigators and program managers with Alaskan, out-of-state, and foreign organizations. In addition, questionnaires were sent to investigators listed with the Smithsonian Science Information Exchange and the U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center's OASIS/ENDEX system. All responses received by February 15, 1978 are included. Late responses will be listed in the next edition. Several changes in format and content make this edition the most comprehensive of the series yet to be published. The data have been entered on an IBM 32 Word Processor, which has enabled the compilation and inclusion of four indexes: an investigator index, an affiliation index, a funding source index, and a general key word index. This year's profile gives a broader emphasis to some of the social sciences, particularly those directly related to resource development, such as archaeology, land use planning, and socio-cultural studies. Foreign and privately sponsored research conducted in the state also received more attention this year. The fifth edition includes nearly 1,550 research projects which were completed, continued, or initiated during 1977 by 1,500 principal and co-investigators. The largest number of studies, 29 percent, was performed by personnel of the federal government. Of these, 16 percent were from federal offices within the state,, and 13 percent were from agencies outside the state. Following the federal government, the University of Alaska registered the greatest number of programs, with 27 percent of the investigators being affiliated with one of the university's 14 research units or departments. Personnel from state agencies accounted for 21 percent of the investigators, followed by outside universities, 11 percent, consulting firms and private industry, 11 percent, local government organizations, 1 percent, and foreign, 1 percent. Projects are listed as presented by the investigators. Every effort has been made to avoid duplication, though in some cases different elements of the same program may be listed as separate projects. Investigator affiliation appears l as it was at the time of the contract. Questions concerning individual projects should be referred to the researcher. During the last few years, numerous research projects aimed at finding beneficial uses for waste heat have been initiated. There was a need to: Summarize current activities in a meeting where all concerned organizations and disciplines are represented. Exchange information on current programs. Obtain the views of the power generating industry. Obtain the views of potential users of waste heat. Make recommendations for future research and development. This workshop was an attempt to respond to these needs. Sixty-two researchers in the field of waste water utilization participated in the workshop. This constituted a national representation from universities, industries and government agencies. The demonstrations listed in this Guide have generally been limited to those most applicable to individual homeowners, small businesses, schools, and farms. In a few states, however, municipal systems have also been included. Many of these projects have received Federal funding. The majority of projects demonstrate some form of solar energy. In addition to solar heating and cooling for homes and commercial buildings, a number of examples of farm applications such as solar crop drying are listed, as well as demonstrations of wind energy, biomass, photovoltaics, etc. Since all successful solar heating and cooling systems incorporate sensible energy-conserving design, each solar heating and/or cooling project is at the same time an energy-conservation project. When these conservation designs are of special interest or inventiveness, this has been noted. Year: 2005 In 2003, the U.S. Department of Agriculture surveyed 21 dry-mill ethanol plants to estimate their 2002 production costs, including both variable (feed stock and plant operation) and capital expenses. These plants produced about 550 million gallons of ethanol in 2002. Net feedstock costs for the surveyed plants ranged from 39 to 68 cents per gallon in 2002. For cash operating expenses, the average energy expenditure was 17.29 cents per gallon. Labor costs ranged from 3 lo 11 cents per gallon, maintenance costs from 1 lo 7 cents, and administrative costs from 1 to 18 cents. For capital expenditures, new plant construction costs from $1.05 to $3.00 per gallon of ethanol. Average investment to expand existing ethanol production capacity was 50 cents per gallon; hence, expansion tends to cost less than new capacity. Comparison with a 1998 survey of ethanol producers showed that total operating costs in 2002 had changed very little from 1998.
