The climate of this region is semiarid, characterized by low winter and high summer temperatures. There are at the present time only six bodies of water available for public angling within the county. Prineville and Ochoco Reservoirs are 3,000 and 1,200 acres respectively, and represent 95% of the total water area available to the public. The others are either small reservoirs or ponds with a combined area of less than 225 surface acres. An additional two reservoirs and two private lakes have been recommended for future development . The fishery consists primarily of rainbow trout and a light warm-water fishery in one of the reservoirs. The season opens in April and closes at the end of October, except for Prineville and Ochoco Reservoirs which are open to angling the entire year. The fishery consists of warm-water game fish and trout. McKay and Cold Springs Reservoirs provide both types of fisheries while the remainder of the impoundments provide angling on stocked rainbow trout. The season is open the entire year on these waters with the exception of McKay and Cold Springs Reservoirs which are closed during the waterfowl nesting period. Since this area has only a limited supply of surface water, emphasis is being put on the construction of reservoirs which would impound runoff waters for angling and other recreation uses. At present, there are only six impoundments within the tri-county area. and these come far from meeting the public demand. An additional 15 reservoirs have been recommended for future development in order to provide adequate public fishing access.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Lake Survey of some Lakes in Deschutes and Willamette National Forests, 1954 Abstract -- July, August and September, 1954, sixty-two Cascade Mountain lakes were surveyed by the Oregon State Game Commission to collect basic data necessarily for the future management of existing trout populations. The survey was devoted to the examination of fish populations, recording water temperatures, physical characteristics and obtaining miscellaneous information pertinent to each lake. The authors spent forty-three working days from July 8 to September 9, 1954 conducting the survey and eleven working days repairing equipment and moving camp to new locations. The location and size of lakes varied. The area of the lakes surveyed ranged from 1 to 85S surface acres Elevation ranged from 4,500 feet to 6,400 feet. Thirty-two lakes were located in the Willamette National Forest in Watershed 2 and thirty were located in Watershed 5 in the Deschutes National Forest. Page 3 contains the names of lakes arranged tn alphabetical order. The survey procedure and analysis was identical to the high lake survey of 1953.
