They are massive things of concrete and will last for centuries. There are huge docks also from 44th to 48th streets, having piers 1,050 feet long, 150 feet wide, with berths 360 feet wide and 44 feet deep cut into solid rock, at a cost of $1,500,000 each. Just across the Hudson River from these docks on the Hoboken side is the former home of the great North German Lloyd and Hamberg-American lines. Their fleets now fly the American flag. The docks witnessed many stirring sights during the war, for it was from these docks that nearly four million American boys sailed to France. The property now belongs to the Federal Government.   	Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Alexander Mackenzie Year: 2009 In 1789 Mackenzie, who was a printer in the Northwest Fur Co., explored westward from Hudson's Bay beyond the Great Slave Lake and discovered the river which now bears his name. He was convinced that an overland route must be found further south. In 1792 - 93 he led a party of ten men westward to what is now the Fraser river and followed that stream 'for twenty-five arduous days'. Baffled by the difficulties of keeping along the almost impassable banks of this river, they crossed the divide and by way of the rivers, now known as Blackwater, Dean and Bella Coola, reached the coast in July 1793. These explorers barely missed Vancouver's expedition which, during the same summer, explored the waters around Vancouver island. Before starting on the return eastward Mackenzie painted in large letters on the face of a rock: 'Alexander Mackenzie from Canada by land, the twenty-second of July, one thousand seven hundred and nintey three.' Thus was completed the first recorded overland journey across North America. See Carey's History of Oregon, Chapter XIII. When he severed his relationship with that company he established himself at this place and in 1846 built this home on the east side of the present Main Street of Oregon City, opposite the Oregon City Woolen Mills. Several years ago people wishing to honor the memory of Dr. McLoughlin formed an association, purchased this house, and moved it to a location which they named McLoughlin Park just north of Seventh Street on the bluff in Oregon City. This old home of the benevelent pioneer fur trader has been repaired and renovated and now stands as a memorial to Dr. McLoughlin - kindly autocrat of the early Northwest, friend of Oregon and founder of Oregon City. He was a man of kindly disposition but resolute character and was a genius in leadership. He commanded obedience but retained the respect and affection of his subordinates and also of the Indians who dealth with his company. Dr. McLoughlin combined far-seeing statesmanship with efficient business ability and made his region the most profitable part of the Hudson Bay Co's domain in the fur trade. He was hospitable to the missionaries and earlier settlers and contributed greatly to the development of Oregon through the encouragement of industry. He left the Hudson Bay Co. in 1845 and made his home at Oregon City until his death. He is buried in the Catholic church yard at Oregon City. F.V. Holman says 'Of all men whose lives and deeds are essential parts of the Oregon country, Dr. John Mc Loughlin stands supremely first - there is no second. His life and character illustrate the kinship of man to God.' Lyman says of Dr. Mc Loughlin, 'He was particularly one who wrote his life in deeds.' The twenty years of Oregon history from 1824 to 1844 is pre-eminently the age of McLoughlin. That Oregon did not pass through war - between the United States and England - was due beyond all question to Mc Loughlin.'
