Seedlings were grown in sunlit, climate-controlled chambers at ambient or ambient+3.5° C and ambient or ambient +180 μmol mol-1 CO2 in a full factorial design. Photosynthetic parameters and needle [N] were measured six times over a 21-month period. Needle [N] varied seasonally, and accounted for 30–50% of the variation in photosynthetic parameters. Across measurement periods, elevated temperature increased needle [N] by 26% and light-saturated net photosynthetic rates by 17%. Elevated [CO2] decreased needle [N] by 12%, and reduced net photosynthetic rates measured at a common [CO2], maximum carboxylation activity (Vc,max) and electrontransport capacity (Jmax), indicating photosynthetic acclimatization. Even so, elevated [CO2] enhanced net photosynthesis, and this effect increased with needle [N]. These results suggest that needle [N] may regulate photosynthetic responses of Douglas-fir to climate change. Further, needle [N] may be altered by climate change. However, effects of elevated [CO2] on photosynthesis may be similar across growth temperatures. SOMs are used to construct a set of 12 characteristic LSMPs (nodes) based on daily reanalysis circulation fields spanning the range of observed synoptic-scale variability for the summer and winter seasons for the period 1979–2013. Composites of surface variables are constructed for subsets of days assigned to each node to explore relationships between temperature, precipitation, and the node patterns. The SOMs approach also captures interannual variability in daily weather regime frequency related to El Niño–Southern Oscillation. Temperature and precipitation extremes in high-resolution gridded observations and in situ station data show robust relationships with particular nodes in many cases, supporting the approach as a way to identify LSMPs associated with local extremes. Assigning days from the extreme warm summer of 2015 and wet winter of 2016 to nodes illustrates how SOMs may be used to assess future changes in extremes. These results point to the applicability of SOMs to climate model evaluation and assessment of future projections of local-scale extremes without requiring simulations to reliably resolve extremes at high spatial scales. The data set includes a nearly continuous record of current velocity and temperature over the continental shelf off Coos Bay from May 1981 through January 1984, CTD sections off Coos Bay in January or February of each year from 1981 to 1984, and CTD sections off Newport (44.6°N) in April 1983, July 1983, and April 1984. The latter are compared with sections off Newport made during the previous two decades. Sea level from the Newport tide gage, daily sea surface temperature at Charleston (43.3°N), the alongshore component of the wind stress at 45°N and the large-scale North Pacific atmospheric pressure pattern provide a climatological perspective. The initial manifestation of El Nino off Oregon was in October 1982: anomalously high sea level, high coastal sea surface temperature, and increased poleward flow. These effects occurred within 1 month of the onset of El Nino off Peru and preceded any local (North Pacific) atmospheric effect by 2-3 months. The anomalous local meteorological conditions, which became manifest in December and January, greatly enhanced the initial effects and inserted their own signal. The first signals of El Nino probably arrived by an oceanic path, but there is no doubt they were subsequently reinforced by anomalous atmospheric conditions.
