  Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Sowing the Seeds of Resistance: Agrarian Reform, Political Violence, and Popular Mobilization in the Aguán Valley of Honduras Author: Wolford, Heather Year: 2014 The agrarian conflict in the Aguán Valley of Honduras is among the most violent and distressing in contemporary Latin America. It has roots in both local and global political economic processes, including structural adjustment and the proliferation of neoliberal economic policies in the region. In particular, the Ley de Modernización y Desarrollo del Sector Agrícola, or Law of Modernization and Development of the Agricultural Sector, drastically altered the landscape in rural Honduras, both literally and figuratively. An analysis of this policy reveals much about the nature of the current conflict, as well as that of the campesino (small farmer) movements that have organized to regain their land. This thesis seeks to shed light on the interconnectedness of economic policy, political violence, and popular resistance in the Aguán Valley and to examine the ways in which campesino movements frame their struggles and assert themselves as legitimate actors in the policy realm. Lack of energy negatively impacts the country's economy, and water shortage would put stress on its agriculture, for example. Furthermore, climate change will further exacerbate these two problems. Dams are considered as a solution because of their ability to manage water resources while generating electricity. Informed by Michel Foucault's power/ knowledge, the purpose of this thesis is to understand how energy and water professionals in Pakistan view sustainable development, and if dams can be considered as sustainable development and climate change adaptive infrastructure. Drawing on interviews in Pakistan, I found that professionals supported dams through mobilizing technocratic discourses that were perceived as apolitical. Yet, I also find that these discourses are political, and I discuss the ramifications of the mobilization of technical discourses that claim to be apolitical for future energy policy decisions in Pakistan. Situated within these extensive, heterogenous, and dynamic assemblages, which I contextualize in historical-geographical terms throughout Chapter I, I narrow my argument to three relatively neglected problematics that occupy subsequent chapters: the role of pigs in the affective construction of modernity, the microbiological zones of insecurity intertwined with industrial pig production, and the re-valorization of urban food waste through peri-urban pig farming, including so-called “garbage pigs.” Animated by broad political, ethical, ontological, and epistemological concerns about society and ecology, culture and technology, and food and the mass-production of commodified organisms, this research helps demonstrate how fraught relationships between pigs, people, and place participate in the politics of "modernity" in the People's Republic of China. This study investigates the potential of gravity goods ropeway as a viable means of transportation to serve these isolated communities. This research looks at Hiklung village to explore the significance of gravity good ropeways in linking farmers to markets, its socio-economic impact, and its effectiveness in improving food security and livelihoods of project beneficiaries. The findings of this study, based on participant observation and interactions with project beneficiaries, suggest that an alternative means of transportation like gravity goods ropeway can be a sustainable transport solution to these isolated communities and increase their participation in the local economy. The site has historically been used for private homesteading and agriculture but has since become wild elds and woodlands. The community supported the City of Albany’s interest in purchasing the land to protect it from private development and preserve its natural character. A new public park at Thornton Lake would create new opportuni es for the community while protec ng a piece of its unique natural landscape. This project aims to support recrea on and community agriculture, and to restore habitats for endangered species. In each of these endeavors, the project strives to educate visitors about Albany’s rich history and invites them to imagine its future.In order to be er understand the context of our project, our team studied Albany’s environmental, social, and economic background. Our team collected background informa on for the project from personal site visits, interviews with city sta , and previous studies and plans. Through our research, we iden ed current strengths and weaknesses that could inspire the design process and iden ed possible opportuni es and challenges that could impact the project.
