I engage a case study of City of Eugene's efforts to create "Welcoming Parks" for its Latino community to analyze the effects of these collaborations on the equity of government services and policy outcomes. My analysis is based on qualitative analysis of interviews and observations conducted with government staff, nonprofit leaders, community advocates, and community members. It demonstrates that local governments' reliance on nonprofit collaborations to address the needs of their “underheard" communities can lead to inequitable service and policy outcomes. Rather, representation of “underheard” communities within government may be necessary to produce outcomes. This research paves the way for further empirical studies of informal government-nonprofit collaborations and provides suggestions regarding how local governments should work with their communities to achieve equitable service and policy outcomes. The combined risk of global climate change and land use change make these systems a high conservation priority. However, little attention has been paid to the microbiota. Fungal endophytes are ubiquitous in plants and are important in ecosystem functioning and host dynamics. To understand fungal community assembly, we used high-throughput sequencing to investigate the composition of fungal foliar endophyte communities in two native, cool-season (C3) bunchgrasses along a natural latitudinal gradient. We quantified the importance of host, host traits, climate, edaphic factors, and spatial distance in microbial community composition. We found that spatial distance was the strongest predictors of endophyte community, while host traits (e.g., plant size, density) and abiotic environment were less important for community structure. These findings underline the importance of dispersal in shaping microbial communities. This thesis includes previously unpublished, co-authored material. I contend that in their diverse representations of female community, these women writers provide collaborative feminist models of resistance, creative transformation, and renewal. Building on Judith Butler's articulation of agency as variation on repetition, I argue that these writers transform the space of the novel in order to tell these stories of community, revitalizing this form as a potential site of collaborative performance of identity. They offer an alternative vision that is not only feminist and collective, but also transnational, translinguistic, historical, and epistemological - challenging and reconfiguring the way in which we understand our world. I develop the project thematically in terms of coming-of-age through and into female community (what the communities in these novels look like and the relationship between individuals and communities, seen through the process of individual maturity). I then consider the formal construction of female community through the collective narrative voice (both within the novels and outside them, in the form of each writer's collective body of engaged feminist dialogue in interviews and theory). If we are to vindicate such ascriptions, we need a theory of the "reality of community," the thesis that under certain conditions, a community possesses a unified, collective agency. This work reconstructs Royce's theory of communal agency through his views of purposiveness and the use he makes of C.S. Peirce's "theory of interpretation." I argue that, for Royce, agency is purposiveness and purposiveness always bears the triadic structure of the process of interpretation. In this research, I investigate how the design of the reputation system can influence user participation. Specifically, I explore differences in individuals’ perceptions of the two most common reputation signals: points and labels. Using theory from sociology and social psychology, I argue that reputation signals vary in role clarity and signals with greater role clarity foster a community atmosphere, leading to greater user connectedness and participation behaviors. By observing a natural experiment on the T-Mobile support community, which changed its reputation signal from points to labels, Study 1 demonstrates that labels drive greater user participation (more discussions and comments) than points. To test role clarity as the underlying construct, Study 2 compares points and labels differing in role clarity, and shows that high role clarity is critical to generating the positive effects. Study 3 shows that providing additional role information can strengthen the impact of low role clarity labels on participation intentions. The final four studies address situations in which role information is more or less critical to the user experience. Study 4 surveys members of a newly-built online community, and finds that users’ community tenure moderates the preference for labels, such that new users’ participation is influenced by the reputation signal, but not long-term users. Study 5 shows that low status users are more willing to participate when labels are used, but high status users are driven to participate when the community uses either reputation signal type. Study 6 finds that when community membership turnover is greater, points and labels have a similar effect on participation intentions, while labels drive participation when there is little community membership turnover. Finally, Study 7 confirms that face-to-face interaction mitigates the positive advantage of labels. Now, advancing climate change poses additional threats to indigenous ways of life. In recent decades, the Coquille have archived historical documents and photographs as a means to protect and assert their tribal sovereignty. There has also been a surge in photography within the Tribe to document contemporary tribal activities. Community photography may be a useful tool for the purpose of asserting tribal culture and self-determination in the face of a changing climate. Photovoice, a type of community photography in which photographs are combined with oral descriptions, may be particularly well suited for tribal purposes. This collaboration explores the value of community photography in general, and photovoice in particular, when used by the Coquille Indian Tribe in the context of climate change. Now, advancing climate change poses additional threats to indigenous ways of life. In recent decades, the Coquille have archived historical documents and photographs as a means to protect and assert their tribal sovereignty. There has also been a surge in photography within the Tribe to document contemporary tribal activities. Community photography may be a useful tool for the purpose of asserting tribal culture and self-determination in the face of a changing climate.
