In this paper we replace gravitational compaction with frictional compaction. We study friction-compacted 2D granular materials confined within fixed boundaries on a horizontal conveyor belt. We find that even with high friction side walls the Janssen effect completely vanishes. Our results demonstrate that gravity-compacted granular systems are inherently different from friction-compacted systems in at least one important way: vibrations induced by sliding friction with the driving surface relax away tangential forces on the walls. Remarkably, we find that the Janssen effect can be recovered by replacing the straight side walls with a sawtooth pattern. The mechanical force introduced by varying the sawtooth angle $\theta$ can be viewed as equivalent to a tunable friction force. By construction, this mechanical friction force cannot be relaxed away by vibrations in the system. This work is described in Chapter 2 and has been published in \textit{Physical Review Letters}. We experimentally study quasi-2d dilute granular flow around intruders whose shape, size and relative impact speed are systematically varied. Direct measurement of the flow field reveals that three in-principle independent measurements of the non-uniformity of the flow field are in fact all linearly related: 1) granular temperature, 2) flow field divergence and 3) shear-strain rate. The shock front is defined as the local maxima in each of these measurements. The shape of the shock front is well described by an inverted catenary and is driven by the formation of a dynamic arch during steady flow. We find universality in the functional form of the shock front within the range of experimental values probed. Changing the intruder size, concavity and impact speed only results in a scaling and shifting of the shock front. We independently measure the horizontal lift force on the intruder and find that it can be understood as a result of the interplay between the shock profile and the intruder shape. Section 1 focuses on formation mechanisms of FeSbx compounds from layered precursors. It was found that a compositionally favorable and homogeneous nucleation environment allowed for the nucleation of a metastable phase, which surprisingly resembles the local coordination environment of the precursors, even in cases where they are compositionally unfavorable. Over the course of this work, the technique of normal-incidence thin film pair distribution function analysis is introduced, which allows for rapid acquisition and analysis of local structure data from intact thin films. Section 2 investigates changes in the stacking sequences of ([PbSe]1+δ)m(TiSe2)n nanolaminate materials, which consist of interleaved layers of each compound in the chemical formula, and how these changes effect the thermoelectric power factor. Homologous series of systematically varying m and n values are investigated and measured properties are correlated back to the designed nanoarchitecture of the laminate materials. It is found that the compounds are stabilized by electron exchange between constituents at the interfaces, and that ‘doping’ of the laminate structure by changing the relative amounts of each constituent is an effective means of optimizing their transport properties. It is also shown that interface density between constituents can be utilized to optimize performance. Section 3 moves from the case of PbSe layers, which maintain their structure, to SnSe layers that significantly distort as the layer size is changed. The distortions in SnSe are observed to occur from templating off TiSe2 layers. As the size of the SnSe layers increases, relatively fewer templated interfacial atoms exist and stabilization of interior atoms must also be considered. The coarse behaviors developed in ([PbSe]1+δ)m(TiSe2)n hold, but the structural distortions in SnSe likely change the band structure of this constituent and hence the composite material, complicating the analysis. In some cases, these changes allow for radically different behavior, best exemplified with high TiSe2 ratios in ([SnSe]1+δ)1(TiSe2)n displaying significant enhancement of the Seebeck coefficient at cryogenic temperatures over the low-n and PbSe-containing analogues. This occurs in order to maintain a connection that is necessary for survival. BTT may be applied to events that generally would not be considered traumatic, such as adultery or discrimination. In order to maintain connections within relationships, institutions, and social systems upon which there is a dependency, people (acting as victims, perpetrators, and witnesses) may show betrayal blindness. This dissertation consists of two studies investigating betrayal blindness and betrayal trauma history as they relate to charitable behavior. Study 1 included 467 college students at the University of Oregon who completed self-report measures of trauma history and a behavioral measure requesting a hypothetical donation. Contributions were requested for three scenarios that varied in level of betrayal: natural disaster, external genocide, and internal genocide. Results indicated no significant main effects for trauma history or type of event. However, people were less willing to donate to the group of recipients and the genocide conditions at low levels of emotional arousal. Additionally, those who have experienced high betrayal traumas also were less likely to donate at low emotional response values. Given the lack of significant findings in this experiment, a second study was conducted using a repeated measures design. Study 2 involved 634 undergraduate students at the University of Oregon. In addition to the measures from Study 1, participants also completed additional self-report measures assessing trait measures of prosocial tendencies, social desirability, personality, emotion regulation, and betrayal awareness. There were no main effects on charitable behavior for personality traits, prosociality, emotion regulation, social desirability, or betrayal awareness. Significant order effects were observed when comparing the type of event and betrayal level of event. A between-subjects approach revealed people donated less money to the higher betrayal versions of both types of scenarios. Across both studies, increased affect, particularly guilt, was associated with more charitable behavior.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Patterns in Individual Endorsement of Societal Metanarratives Author: Akers, Laura Year: 2012 Culturally shared beliefs about societies and humanity play a prominent part in world events, from beliefs about the histories and destinies of nations to beliefs about the appropriate relationship between humanity and the natural world. Many of these beliefs are "metanarratives," simplified representations of past and future societal trends, which often have narrative elements, such as goals, dramatic features, a sense of suspense for group members, and affective judgments about the passage of events over time. In this exploratory study, lifelong residents of the United States (N = 299 undergraduate students and 88 members of a web sample of older adults) indicated their degree of agreement with 73 metanarrative statements. Factor analysis of the students' personal belief scores for the 73 metanarratives revealed a pattern of clustering into six factors, indicating that people tend to believe in families of metanarratives. The six factors were Traditional Religion, American Secular Values, International Cooperation, Eco-Romanticism, Anti-Government Cynicism, and Rational Progress. The web sample largely replicated this structure, but with only four factors. The factors were highly correlated with political party affiliation and other psychosocial and demographic variables, including religiousness, Saucier "isms" factors, and MFQ moral foundations. Participants were also asked about the extent to which some of their strongest beliefs were reflected in their personal activities: career choice, leisure time, spending money, voting, joining groups, reading and viewing, and discussion. The 73 metanarratives were coded for several narrative features: evaluative schema (such as Progress or Looming Catastrophe), presence of standard story elements (context, problem, outcome), presence of goals, and presence of references to cognitively exceptional elements (circumstances beyond the ordinary), such as the sacred, transcendental, unique, or extreme. For both samples, metanarratives with an evaluative schema indicating two possible paths were more motivating than those with only one outcome (e.g., stability or a cycle of recurring ups-and-downs). Further, those with goals were more motivating than those without, and for the web sample, those with cognitively exceptional elements were more motivating than those without. Further study of metanarratives should help to better illuminate the factors leading to individuals' decisions to participate in their larger societies.
