Average area occupied by each group declined from a high of 4.1 acres per group in 1972 to 0.65 acre in 1974. Attack densities decreased; however, brood-to-parent ratios increased. Natural enemies are having a limited impact on population densities. Availability of susceptible host material may be the primary limiting factor on increased infestation potential. Continued salvage logging of infested trees and susceptible stands is encouraged. An outbreak of Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopk., 40-4 began in 1969 in the North Fork Clearwater River drainage in northern Idaho. This infestation probably resulted from trees felled during clearing for the Dworshak Reservoir, from ice and snow breakage which occurred during the winter of 1968-69 in stands adjacent to the proposed reservoir, and an abundance of mature and overmature Douglas-fir within the drainage. The outbreak reached epidemic proportions in 1970, 40 but was not detected until 1971. To determine impact of this insect on Douglas-fir stands within the area of infestation and establish a base from which to conduct salvage logging, a two-stage survey using aerial photography followed by a ground cruise was conducted in 1971, 1972, and 1973. Area surveyed varied from 288,000 acres in 1971 to 494,000 in 1972, and was reduced 410 to 287,000 acres in 1973. The 1971 survey estimated that 174,164 trees were killed during the 2-year period 1970-71, resulting in a volume loss of 85.8 MMBF of Douglas-fir sawtimber on 288,000 acres. In 1972, an estimated 46,844 trees were killed with a volume loss of about 17.8 MMBF on 494,000 acres. In 1973, the survey estimated that 8,141 trees were killed with a volume loss of 4.2 MMIIF of merchantable timber on 287,000 acres. The infestation has been declining since 1971. There are 276 international river basins providing almost 60% of global freshwater and supporting at least 40% of the world population. Over recent decades, the riparian governments of the Lancang-Mekong River, like other international river basin leaders, may have had different and sometimes conflicting interests in promoting their economies through exploiting shared water, preserving their aquatic resources, or both, in the basin. Accordingly, their interactions have created water events, which can be neutral, conflictive, or cooperative. In this secondary-data paper, there are seven levels of conflicts and seven levels of cooperation, ranging from -7 to -1 and from +1 to +7, respectively. The main discussions of this paper focus on frequencies in each level, outstanding factors found in either conflicts or cooperation of the events, and policy implications. The 190 events from 1952 to 2010 in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin are found to be overwhelmingly cooperative. The result means that six riparian governments – China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam – would like to work together. However, these nations will need to do more, especially relating to three outstanding factors found in the conflictive events: dam development, navigation projects, and droughts. In addition, memberships of both China and Burma are strongly needed in the Mekong River Committee (MRC). The Long Tom Watershed Council (LTWC) is a non-profit organization in Eugene, Oregon that serves to protect and enhance watershed health in the Long Tom River Basin. The Amazon Creek Initiative was launched by the LTWC in 2011 as Oregon’s newest Pesticide Stewardship Partner. Goals of the initiative are to improve water quality and habitat function in Amazon Creek by encouraging voluntary retrofits of low-impact development (LID) and through outreach and education of pollution prevention practices. This internship involved a series of projects in support of the development of the Amazon Creek Initiative. Accomplishments included surface water sampling, stakeholder research, development of communication tools, creation of an LID cost calculator, site visits and assessments of pesticide retailers, and a review of national efforts to train pesticide retail staff in integrated pest management. This work supports the Amazon Creek Initiative as it moves towards implementation and provided diverse learning opportunities in non-profit and watershed council operations, communicating a scientific message, and low-impact development solutions to stormwater management.
