The benomyl fungicide, rersan, applied at 7 and 14 pounds active ingredient per acre, on April 26 and July 25, 1973, was ineffective in reducing mortality in 2-0 Engelmann spruce seedlings derived from two different seed sources growing in three different nursery sections at the USFS Coeur d'Alene Nursery. Percent mortality in plots monitored over the entire summer was 8.6, 3.6 and 8.0 in sections 31, 36, and 37 respectively, and ranged from 0 to as high as 21.9 in individual mortality plots. Percent mortality in sections 31 and 37 was similar and significantly greater than in section 36, indicating variation in conditions associated with individual sections. Percent mortality combined for sections 36 and 37 (seed source 72-180) was significantly less than that for section 31 (seed source 72-144) indicating variation in host or seed lot susceptibility or tolerance. Higher rates of application, 28 and 42 pounds active per acre, applied during a second treatment period were ineffective. Because of experimental design inadequacies, however, the results are inconclusive. Bioassay studies to determine chemical distribution in soil and within seedlings were generally negative. Reasons for lack of control and negative assays are discussed. Isolation studies did reveal a high frequency of occurrence of Fusariuin spp. in dead seedlings, and disease expression increased with increasing summer temperatures, implicating fusarial pathogens in the causal complex. Annual increases in trap catches from 1980 through 1982 and reports during the summer of 1982 of defoliated yard and farmstead trees at various locations strongly suggest that populations are building. Statistical analysis of the data showed that essentially the same amount of fluoride was taken in by conifers, shrubs, and grasses in 1972 as in 1971. It is concluded that the area over which plants accumulated fluoride and resultant damage occurred remained unchanged from 1971 at 179,000 acres and 15,000 acres, respectively. Vegetation in Glacier National Park continued to show some fluoride injury and to accumulate abnormally high amounts of fluoride. Forest Health Protection Investigations were conducted from 1998- 2000 at the Potlatch Corporation's Cherrylane Seed Orchard near Lewiston, Idaho to evaluate presence and extent of potentially pathogenic fungi on roots of diseased stock and within the soil in current and proposed plantation sites. The most common group of pathogens encountered was Fusarium spp.; F. oxysporum was by far the most common colonizer of tree roots and soil. Phytophthora spp. (P. cacta rum and P. pseudotsugae) and Pythium spp. (P. irregulare and P. ultimum) were also common root and soil colonizers. Cylindrocarpon spp. (C. destructans and C. tenue) were isolated at lower frequencies. Soil solarization with a thin plastic tarp during the summer effectively reduced populations of potential soil-borne pathogens. Managers should continue to monitor pathogen populations on stock and within soil of proposed plantation sites in order to reduce future disease impacts.
