Oregon, much like the nation, has historically had a paradoxical relationship to migration. Oregon is famous for the Lewis and Clark expedition and the Oregon Trail. It is, and always has been, greatly affected and inspired by interstate migration yet each successive generation has been less than welcoming to further migration. Today, Oregon is a desirable destination for retirement-aged migrants for its scenic beauty and mild seasons. This essay will use census data from 2000 to describe the characteristics associated with retirement-age migrants to Oregon. Multinomial logistic regression analysis is used to compare retirement-aged Oregon in-migrants with Oregon non-movers, Oregon out-migrants and non-movers and out-migrants of the states from which in-migrants to Oregon originated. In three cases, the characteristics effecting the decision to migrate are determined by comparing a migrant group population with its respective non-mover population. This essay is a useful tool for those seeking to understand the characteristics important to retirement-age migration to Oregon as well as the factors influencing the migration decision. Estimates of age-specific migration rates for Oregon incorporated places show markedly different patterns for small communities, with such places experiencing severe outmigration among 20-to-24 year-olds, but adding population in older age groups. Regression analysis of net migration in Oregon communities with 1289 people or fewer shows that natural amenities, particularly low rainfall and proximity to open water, are primary drivers of community-specific migration rates. The effects of labor markets and distance to urban centers are found to wane, particularly for working-age migrants, in the 2000-2010 period, with the size of a community becoming a more important determinant of its net migration rate. Principally they are concerned about youth leaving and not returning. This analysis uses recent Census Bureau data to describe, in detail, the demographic changes occurring in rural Oregon. Particular attention is paid to migration’s role in driving these changes. Interviews of community leaders in rural Oregon reveal how rural Oregon is responding to, and thinking about, these demographic changes. Results indicate that there is no comprehensive public policy in place to address the concern about demographic change. Given the current climate of anti-immigrant sentiment and the rise of the far right in both the United States and Europe, this study aimed to determine the strengths and weaknesses of integration on Latinos in the United States and Roma in the United Kingdom. In order to ascertain the outcomes of immigration policies in these two nations, the research conducted a series of one-one interviews with Latinos in the United States and Roma in the United Kingdom. The theory of social construction in conjunction with Deliberative Democracy was used a basis for this study. The interviews were analyzed using Inductive Thematic Analysis in order to map out common themes across migrant experiences and develop policy recommendations based on the participant’s feedback. The analysis concluded that the education of migrants and their children was the main contributing factor in their decision to migrate. Migrants with positive educational outcomes were better suited for integration, compared to migrants who struggled to obtain or complete an education, as was seen among Latino participants. Transmission cables are used to transfer electrical power to the mainland. These cables carry a harmonic time-dependent current. This current in turn generates both an electric and magnetic field. Although the electric field can be shielded from the marine environment, it is not economically feasible to use high permeability materials to shield the magnetic field. The magnetic field induces an electric field in the water surrounding the transmission cable. The sensory perception and migration of fish and mammalian species can be caused by perturbations in the electric and magnetic fields. This research focuses on determining the magnitude of both the magnetic field and the induced electric field. It is hoped that through a better understanding of the fields created by these transmission cables, marine conservation can be promoted and renewable wave energy can be further developed. Several analytic models are compared for the radial and axial electric field. The magnitude of the magnetic field and its induced electric field in seawater are experimentally measured, and the ability to predict the electric field through a derivation of Maxwell’s equation similar to the statement by Shakur et al is evaluated experimentally. A derivation using polarization potentials (Hertz vectors) employed by Sommerfeld et al is used to model the induced electric field. The magnetic field is measured using a Hall magnetometer. Electric fields are measured using standard reference graphite electrodes. The magnetic field is modeled using Maxwell’s equations; there is excellent overlap of the experimental data and theoretical model. The traditional model of dealing with the fields directly fails to accurately model the data for a single copper conductor in both the near and far field regions. There is excellent correlation between the model proposed by Sommerfeld and the measured data. The plan highlights a variety of activities that need to be taken by both public and private entities in order to recover these listed species. The Willamette River basin is a diverse and complicated system that encompasses urban, forest and agricultural uses on public and private lands. It is the largest basin in Oregon, housing 70% of the state’s population and includes 16,000 miles of stream. Recovery cannot be achieved on public land alone - over 60% of land in the basin is in private ownership. All parts of the basin provide important areas for rearing, migration and spawning of salmon and steelhead. Information is lacking about how stakeholders view the Willamette River basin salmon and steelhead recovery plan. Through 25 interviews, I collected data from stakeholders to understand their knowledge of and engagement in Willamette River basin salmon recovery efforts. Interview themes came from a Delphi review of recovery plan themes provided by NOAA personnel. I found that recovery cannot be successful in the Willamette River basin unless private landowners are better informed and willing to participate in the process. I determined a baseline understanding of stakeholders while providing a roadmap for future education, outreach and restoration efforts.
