In this paper we present an in-depth empirical study about the motivations developers have for examining software history, the strategies they use, and the challenges they encounter. To learn these, we interviewed 14 experienced developers from industry, and then extended our findings by surveying 217 developers. We found that history does not begin with the latest commit but with uncommitted changes. Moreover, we found that developers had different motivations for examining recent and old history. Based on these findings we propose 3-LENS HISTORY, a novel unified model for reasoning about software history. In the model, hypothetical populations were composed of five different life histories, which were genetically determined. Each life history type had its own rate of survival and reproduction that varied with changing environment and population density. In nonselective harvesting, life history types were equally vulnerable to harvest. In selective harvesting some life history types, were more intensively harvested than others. Population life history composition changed continuously in response to both changing environmental conditions and harvesting. Changes in life history composition were closely related to changes in numerical population performances such as density and yield. In general, selective harvesting of the simulated populations reduced mean and terminal abundance, total catch, and life history diversity. Nonselective harvesting tended to eliminate individuals evenly from the life history distribution so that the life history diversity was not greatly influenced. Selective harvesting tended to severely reduce or eliminate the life history types that were more intensively harvested. This generally resulted in extreme reduction of life history diversity. Variation in abundance, as measured by the absolute value of the residuals, was consistently larger in selectively harvested populations. Increased variation was probably related to reduction in life history diversity. Perhaps the most potentially alarming impact was the dramatic increase in incidences of extinction of selectively harvested populations at the highest exploitation rate. High selective harvest rate led to severe reduction in life history diversity which diminished the population's ability to persist in a changing environment. Furthermore, the extreme reduction of life history diversity made it difficult for populations that were able to persist to recover in abundance after termination of harvest. It is important to note, however, that the above conclusions are general outcomes based on 20 different environmental regimes. The results from a few individual regimes were not in accordance with some of the general outcomes, illustrating simply that particular results are highly contingent on the particular environmental pattern. St. Augustine was an influential member of the early Christian Church, establishing many doctrines of the Christian faith. One of his most significant contributions to Christianity was a Christian philosophy of history. Augustine defined the purpose of history as God providing salvation to humanity after the fall of Adam. This salvation is achieved through a conflict between two cities of people, the earthly city and the City of God, which are defined by two separate loves. The earthly citizens love themselves more than God, while the citizens in the City of God love God more than themselves. Salvation is ultimately provided to the predestined citizens of the City of God in the final judgment, while citizens of the earthly city are damned to eternal punishment in a pit of fire. This philosophy of history broke with the classical tradition history, which believed that history was cyclic, repeating continuously for all eternity. Augustine defined history as having a distinct beginning and end, through which God worked to provide salvation to humanity. Pacific Coast estuaries provide important rearing habitats leading to improved growth and survival for juvenile chinook salmon. However, research has suggested that juvenile salmon have little use for estuarine habitats in the Columbia River. To further understand salmonid recovery needs in estuaries, I compared historical and contemporary life history patterns in the estuary to determine if there has been a change in the importance of the Columbia River estuary to juvenile chinook salmon. Historical data sources provided evidence of diverse estuarine life history strategies for juvenile chinook salmon (retrieved from fish surveys and scale analysis), including differences in time of estuarine entry, growth, and residency. In contrast, contemporary estuarine salmon populations, which are dominated by hatchery-reared juveniles, had highly uniform life-history characteristics; most fish entered the estuary at similar times and sizes and remained for short time periods. The inability to distinguish the origin of unmarked individuals precluded a separate life-history assessment for contemporary wild chinook juveniles. Pacific Coast estuaries provide important rearing habitats leading to improved growth and survival for juvenile chinook salmon. However, research has suggested that juvenile salmon have little use for estuarine habitats in the Columbia River. To further understand salmonid recovery needs in estuaries, I compared historical and contemporary life history patterns in the estuary to determine if there has been a change in the importance of the Columbia River estuary to juvenile chinook salmon. Historical data sources provided evidence of diverse estuarine life history strategies for juvenile chinook salmon (retrieved from fish surveys and scale analysis), including differences in time of estuarine entry, growth, and residency. In contrast, contemporary estuarine salmon populations, which are dominated by hatchery-reared juveniles, had highly uniform life-history characteristics; most fish entered the estuary at similar times and sizes and remained for short time periods. The geological formations of Iceland are very different in character depending on their age and formation history. Three major types of formations occur: Tertiary, Plio-Pleistocene, and Pleistocene. These formations have different hydrological characters and different landscapes. There are also large differences in the climate within Iceland. Four major river types are found in Iceland: spring-fed rivers in Pleistocene areas, direct runoff rivers in Plio-Pleistocene areas, direct runoff rivers in Tertiary areas and wetland heath rivers in Tertiary areas. Eleven biogeoclimatic regions occur in Iceland, each having a different watershed type. The classification together with life history theory can explain the distributions, abundances, and life history strategies of Icelandic salmonids. Oceanic conditions must also be considered to explain the life history patterns of anadromous populations. When the freshwater and marine habitat is stable, the life history patterns of individuals in a population tend to be uniform, one life history form being most common. In an unstable environment many life history forms occur and the life span of one generation is long. The properties of the habitat can further explain which life history types are present. Methodology explores the various ways historian collect oral histories. I focus my research on ten historians’ works that study the challenges with collecting oral history. The history of migration and gender roles is titled “Women in Transition: A Study of Migration History, Sending Communities, and Women’s Gender Roles in Mexico.” This studies a brief history of migration beginning with the Bracero Program of 1942. Following the history, I analyze women’s roles within sending communities. Sending communities are part of the transnational community, where the people in the communities either migrate or remain at home while family members leave to find work. The last part is titled “Women in Both Worlds.” This section concentrates on the women who migrate to the United States and their expected role as a woman in the household.
