Principally they are concerned about youth leaving and not returning. This analysis uses recent Census Bureau data to describe, in detail, the demographic changes occurring in rural Oregon. Particular attention is paid to migration’s role in driving these changes. Interviews of community leaders in rural Oregon reveal how rural Oregon is responding to, and thinking about, these demographic changes. Results indicate that there is no comprehensive public policy in place to address the concern about demographic change. Findings helped achieve a better understanding of the individual and organizational variables that either promote or reduce the occurrence of burnout among high school coaches. A random sample of 204 varsity basketball coaches responded to a two part research instrument consisting of a demographic data sheet and the Maslach Burnout inventory (MBI). The major measuring instrument, the MBI, provided a measure of perceived burnout in terms of the frequency and intensity of Emotional Exhaustion. Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment. Coaches were grouped according to the following demographic and job related variables: 1. age, 2. sex, 3. school size, 4. sex of team coached, 5. number of years at present job, 6. total number of years in the coaching field, 7. additional coaching responsibilities, 8. extent of teaching responsibilities, 9. hours per week devoted to basketball during the season, 10. weeks per year devoted to basketball during the off-season, 11. winning percentage, 12. perceived adequacy of the basketball budget. A one-way multivariate analysis of variance was conducted for each demographic variable serving as the independent variable and the burnout factors serving as the dependent variables. Where there was an overall significant difference across groups, the univariate F ratios were examined to determine which burnout measures contributed to these differences. Findings did not support the hypothesis that significant differences in perceived burnout exist among Oregon high school basketball coaches when grouped by the selected demographic and job related variables. Additionally, mean scores for the burnout subscales indicated low to moderate levels of burnout when all demographic categories were compared against normative data. Although the timber and fishing sectors are still important, the economies of coastal communities now rely more on non-earned income and tourism. Non-earned income sources, such as transfer payments and investment earnings, account for over forty percent of total personal income in coastal communities. This increase in non-earned income is mainly due to the increasing elderly population, which is perhaps the most notable demographic change in coastal communities. The immigration of retirees accounts for a high percentage of the increase in the elderly population. On the other hand, tourism is important not only for its direct impact, but also for secondary and induced impacts in the economy. Encouragement of this sector is now an economic development priority in coastal communities. Growth of the tourism industry is expected to offset, in part, economic decline of the timber and the fishing industry. This study investigates the impacts of economic and demographic change on natural resource based industry. Analysis of economic and demographic characteristics of three coastal communities shows that economic and demographic changes differ in each community. These differences, together with differences in community characteristics, make the potential impacts arising from economic and demographic change unique in each community. Findings suggest that generalization of potential impacts among communities is not always adequate. Investigating these impacts community by community is a better approach and will provide more reliable information needed for local policy making. This study hypothesized that the natural resource based industry is affected by economic and demographic changes through local government policy. Examples from three coastal communities, Newport, Reedsport and Gold Beach, illustrate how economic and demographic changes are influencing local policy. However, only examples from Newport provided clear evidence of impacts on natural resource based industry. Therefore, current evidence is not yet conclusive for rejecting or failing to reject this hypothesis. The findings show, however, that there is a need to study these impacts more extensively. This study proposes a methodology which may be instructive for further research. The objective of this study was to learn both the incidence of burnout and the relationship between that incidence and selected demographic variables and supervisory support among certificated school psychologists in Oregon. A sample of 70 school psychologists responded to a three-part research instrument consisting of a demographic data sheet, the Maslach Burnout Inventory, and the Work Experience Scale (WES). The primary measuring instrument the MBI, provided a measure of perceived burnout in terms of the level of burnout of Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment. The Work Experience Scale provided a measure of perceived level of supervisory support. School Psychologists were grouped according to the following demographic and job-related variables: 1.Educational level. 2.Type of academic preparation. 3.Years of experience as a school psychologist. 4.Years of experience in special education. 5.Sex. 6.Income. 7.Years in present job. 8.Geographical work setting. Correlations of coefficient were computed to determine the degree of relationship between dependent burnout variables and significant independent demographic variables. Means and standard deviation for the study population and Maslach's sample population were performed to see if material differences exist between these two populations. Analysis of variance techniques were used to compare dependent burnout variables with selected independent demographic variables. The Newman Kuels Multiple Comparison procedure was performed to determine if statistical differences exist between geographical work settings. Multiple regression techniques were used to identify the relationship between the dependent burnout variables and all independent demographic variables. Findings rejected the hypothesis that there was no significant relationship to burnout level of depersonalization and income, the burnout level of emotional exhaustion and years on the job, emotional exhaustion and income, emotional exhaustion and supervisory support, emotional exhaustion and level of academic preparation, and level of personal accomplishment and work setting. All other hypotheses were rejected, however, significant relationships were found between the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization levels of burnout and selected independent demographic variables. Additionally, mean scores for the burnout subscales indicated moderate levels of burnout existed when respondent scoring information were compared against normative data. Adaptation to role transitions can have various outcomes. Health and demographic characteristics as well as environmental control have been shown to affect the transition to the role of patient. The acutely ill elderly's adaptation to the role of hospitalized patient has not been measured from the elderly patient's perspective. This study utilized a random sample of 176 hospitalized elderly medical-surgical patients and the patients' registered nurses to examine the relationships among demographic and health characteristics, latitude of choice and elderly hospitalized patient adjustment. Patients were excluded who had been in ICU for more than 24 hours, had decreased mental status, or were judged to be too physically ill to participate. The study used an adaptation of the Latitude of Choice Scale (a measure of environmental control) developed by Hulicka and colleagues, a nurse-rated hospitalized patient adjustment scale developed by Cicirelli, and an adaptation of the adjustment scale for patients' self-assessment. Results from a series of multiple regression analyses indicate that, taken as a group, neither demographic nor health characteristics predict environmental control, as measured by the adapted version of the Latitude of Choice Scale (LOC). However, one individual health characteristic, length of time since last hospitalization, was a negative predictor of LOC. Further, the results indicate that taken as a group, health and demographic characteristics, along with patient LOC scores are not predictive of either nurse or patient-rated adaptation. The individual health characteristic "patient acuity rating" did negatively predict both nurse and patient-rated adjustment scores. Nurse-rated patient adjustment scores were also negatively predicted by the participants' prior number of hospitalizations. A paired-t test indicated that patients rated themselves significantly better adjusted than did their nurses. This finding was judged to be clinically unimportant because of the small real difference in the mean scores. Random-effects ANOVA found no significant variance between nurses' ratings of patients. It was hypothesized that no difference in productivity would exist between the strike work force study period and the comparison period of the previous year. An interview form was used to collect demographic data and data concerning changes in those factors affecting the productivity of the work force. Additional demographic data and several measures of productivity were later collected. Because no major changes in equipment or machinery had taken place from the beginning of the comparison period to the end of the study period, any changes observed would be a result of differences in the motivational systems, the characteristics of the work forces, the organizational structure, and the work or production methods between the before strike and during strike periods. The demographic profiles of the two work forces differed little, except with respect to education; whereas the motivational systems, organizational structures, and work methods differed considerably. A portion of the motivational system might be transferable to an organization operating under normal circumstances. Improvements to work methods might be more successfully transferred, and would be a likely area to target for lost cost but effective productivity improvements. More specifically the objectives of the study were: 1) to identify the extent of women's involvement in the estate planning process, 2) to determine the extent to which involvement in the estate planning process is dependent upon selected demographic and situational variables, and 3) to identify possible target audiences for estate planning programs. A personal interview schedule was used to collect the data. Eighty women were ramdomly selected from the Corvallis 1979-80 telephone directory and were interviewed. A chi square test for independence was used to determine if there was a relationship between women's involvement in the estate planning process and selected demographic and situational variables. Fourteen hypotheses were tested at the .05 level of significance. Five null hypotheses were rejected and eight null hypotheses were retained. One hypothesis could not be statistically analyzed because of an insufficient number of observed frequencies in the cells. The statistical analyses provided data which enabled the researcher to develop a profile of a woman likely to have high involvement in the estate planning process. She would be 35 years of age or older; married to a man 35 years of age or older; her husband would be employed and they would have an annual family income of greater than $17,000. Logistic regression was used to determine the probability that a respondent would oppose or favor seven different energy conservation regulations, not believe or believe in the seriousness of the energy problem, and have a low or high degree of internality, and what the related function of eight socio-demographic characteristics were. Log-linear analysis was used to obtain descriptions of the relationships among all the variables included in a high order contingency table. The significant socio-demographic characteristics in the logistic regression analyses varied depending on the regulation, indicating that personal impact or inconvenience determined respondents' attitudes. The regulation with the greatest opposition and the greatest number of significant socio-demographic variables and interactions, was "discourage building homes away from towns and cities to lessen travel by car." Those who did not believe in the seriousness of the energy problem were over 50 years of age, male, had less than a college degree, and opposed mandatory energy conservation regulations related to home thermostat settings. Homeowners opposed the regulation requiring their homes to pass an energy audit. Opposition to regulations appeared to be related only to an individual's perception of the consequences of the regulation, and not to belief in the energy problem or locus of control. Those with low internality scores included females, rural residents, respondents over 50, and those with less than a college degree. Social exchange theory is proposed as an explanation of beliefs, attitudes and practices related to energy conservation. An expert Delphi Panel ranked the energy conservation regulations on degree of restrictiveness. The Kendall Tau Coefficient tested for associations between the Delphi Panel ranking of the regulations and respondents' perceptions of the restrictiveness of the regulations and level of opposition. Emotional exhaustion intensity was related to age, years at present school and number of sports coached in a year. Depersonalization frequency was related to specialization taught, type of sport coached as head coach, and gender of athletes coached as head coach. The purpose of this study was to explore the question, "Given certain demographic variables common to all adult Conservative Baptists, can some or all of these variables be used to accurately classify (predict) persons as either small group attenders or nonattenders?" A literature review established the fact that adult participation in small groups is a neglected topic within educational research in general. No research was found on adult participation in small groups within churches. A copy of the survey instrument was mailed to 396 randomly selected subject-participants. Data was sought on eight common demographic variables. A return rate of 76 per cent was achieved. Two-group linear discriminant analysis was the statistical technique utilitized to derive a discriminant function and the associated classification scores. While a significant discriminant function was obtained, the subsequent classification analysis failed to yield acceptable results. The percentage of participants in the cross-validation sample who were correctly classified was less than what could have been expected if the classification was based on nothing more than simple random assignment. The sample consisted of 25 community nutrition educators (17 Nutrition Field Workers and 8 Community Nutrition Technicians) who were working in Kiambu District at the time of the study. A questionnaire was developed to collect data concerning the respondents' demographic characteristics and their perceptions of the importance of in-service training needs in 15 selected subject matter areas. Frequency distributions, percentages, and mean scores were used for the descriptive analyses. Chi-square analysis was used to determine if there were any significant relationships between selected demographic characteristics and the respondents' perceptions regarding in-service training needs. The respondents perceived the greatest in-service training needs in the major areas of family health and diet modification. The top 25% of topics with the highest mean scores representing topics perceived to be most important for in-service training were identified. There were significant relationships with 16 topics when using job title, experience on current job, work place, and age as the determining demographic characteristics. The findings of the study were discussed and recommendations offered to improve future in-service training programs and hence the quality of the community nutrition education program as it is implemented in the communities in Kiambu District in Kenya.
