Widgets Engine is used to design a simple image processing interface where processing operations are mapped to widgets that can be connected together to create more complex operations. Actual data processing occurs remotely via calls to a REST-style Java web service to allow for a non-local and decentralized system. Web-based GIS tools including coastal web atlases (CWAs) and geospatial web services are being rapidly developed to assist managers, decision-makers, and scientists with the creation, implementation, and evaluation of coastal management options. Numerous CWAs are incorporating web feature service (WFS) standards into their websites to provide critical datasets on-the-fly for use in spatial decision support tools to assist with management and policy decisions. However, with this increased use of WFSs in CWAs it’s critical to understand how the various components used to create robust WFSs can affect its performance and ability to successfully execute complex spatial queries that are utilized to assess management options. A subset of county land parcel data from Wisconsin was utilized to assess how various software, hardware, and data characteristics can affect WFSs overall robustness, and how these components impact its ability to execute accurate, timely complex spatial queries consistently and their ability to meet the demands of managers, decision-makers, and scientists. Results suggest that WFSs, with varying levels of robustness, can successfully perform accurate, reliable spatial queries on datasets to extract relevant information pertaining to coastal management concerns, which could impact CWAs by increasing their functionality and range of potential applications provided to users. Our football videos are collected from a web-service used by more than 13, 000 high school, college, and professional football teams. The videos display huge variation in camera viewpoint, lighting conditions, football field properties, camera work, among many other factors. These factors taken together make standard off-the-shelf computer vision algorithms ineffective. The main contribution of this thesis is to design and evaluate two novel approaches for the offense/defense classification problem from raw video, which make minimal assumptions about the video properties. Our empirical evaluation on approximately 1200 videos of football plays from 10 diverse games validate the effectiveness of the approaches and highlight their differences. The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to understand the experiences of older students' use of web-based student services in a community college setting. For the purpose of this study the term "older student" was defined as people born between the years 1943 and 1960. This group of people, often described as the Baby Boomer generation, would not have had access to computer technologies had they gone to college during their adolescent years. Web-based student services was defined as the range of student services which are placed online, allowing students to access information and services without needing to see someone in-person. There were three major reasons for this study: (a) the increase in the development and use of online student services, (b) the increase of older students in higher education, and (c) further need to understand the unique experiences of older students in higher education. The case study design used an interpretive social science philosophical approach. The study was conducted at a large multi-campus community college in a metropolitan area located in the Northwest. A combination of survey, interviews, institutional data, and student-journals were used to answer the following research questions: (a) What is the experience of older students with web-based technology in a community college setting, (b) How do the older students' overall experiences and use of web-based services affect their community college experience, and (c) How might older students' background and experiences with web-based student services inform community college policy and practice? Close examination of data revealed several major themes of older students' experiences with online student services. These themes are: • Student Assumptions • Self-Motivation • Influence of Prior Work Experiences • User Preferences • How and What Online Services are Used • User Suggestions When these themes are taken into consideration with related literature on the digital divide, technology use in student affairs, older student experiences in the community college, and older students' use of technology, this study offers implications for community college leaders and practitioners in the student affairs and technology development. The implications of this study may impact online service development, assessment of computer literacy, program enhancement or development, and technical changes. Spatiotemporal data (i.e., data with elements of both space and time) can be used to assess movement or change over time in a particular location, an approach that is useful across many disciplines. However, spatiotemporal data structures can be quite complex, and the datasets very large. Although GIS software programs are capable of processing and analyzing spatial information, most contain no (or minimal) features for handling temporal information and have limited capability to deal with large, complex multidimensional spatiotemporal data. A related problem is how to best represent spatiotemporal data to support efficient processing, analysis, and visualization. In the era of "big data," efficient methods for analyzing and visualizing large quantities of spatiotemporal data have become increasingly necessary. Automated processing approaches, when made scalable and generalizable, can result in much greater efficiency in spatiotemporal data analysis. The growing popularity of web services and server-side processing methods can be leveraged to create systems for processing spatiotemporal data on the server, with delivery of output products to the client. In many cases, the client can be a standard web browser, providing a common platform from which users can interact with complex server-side processing systems to produce specific output data and visualizations. The rise of complex JavaScript libraries for creating interactive client-side tools has enabled the development of rich internet applications (RIA) that provide interactive data exploration capabilities and an enhanced user experience within the web browser. Three projects involving time-series tsunami simulation data, potential human response in a tsunami evacuation scenario, and large sets of modeled time-series climate grids were conducted to explore automated web-based analysis, processing, and visualization of spatiotemporal data. Methods were developed for efficient handling of spatiotemporal data on the server side, as well as for interactive animation and visualization tools on the client side. The common web browser, particularly when combined with specialized server side code and client side RIA libraries, was found to be an effective platform for analysis and visualization tools that quickly interact with complex spatiotemporal data. Although specialized methods were developed to for each project, in most cases those methods can be generalized to other disciplines or computational domains where similar problem sets exist.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Persona concept : system architecture and prototypes Author: Subramanium, Mahesh This project explores a security framework, called the Persona Concept, aimed at giving the user greater control over their private data in cyberspace, in particular, their electronic credentials. The background for the Persona Concept, along with the requirements identified can be found in three (3) technical publications produced by Kal Toth and myself in 2003 (see list of references [1], [2] and [3]). The Persona Concept uses a Persona Server as the secure storehouse for persona data such as credit card and bank account identifiers as well electronic credentials such as X.509 certificates. The data is secured using public key encryption. The server component interacts with the user via a Persona Client which obtains X-509 Certificates on behalf of the user from a Certification Authority (CA) service. Interaction among the various components (Persona Server, Persona Client and Certification Authority) is enabled by the use of Web Services. This project focused on managing the user data across these components including the creation, secure storage and retrieval of Persona data to and from the Persona Server using Simple Object Application Protocol (SOAP) and under the control of public key encryption schemes. SOAP is an open XML-based application-level Internet protocol for implementing distributed access to object-oriented services deployed on the Web. SOAP is designed to allow applications running on a range of platforms to access remote objects and applications on servers across a TCP/IP network. In addition to this, the project built upon the work by Ike Chen (OSU M.S. graduate project in 2004) [4] by enabling X-509 Certificate file transfer between the client and Certification Authority using SOAP (improvements were made to the mechanisms for transferring files, particularly in support of X.509 certificates). A Java-based prototype client called the Persona Client (PC) was created and used in conjunction with a small local password-based security scheme to protect the private key data on the user device. My project first implemented the upgrade to the Certification Authority services and detailed the various policies surrounding storage of data. I then implemented the Persona Client which enabled me to test the persona services in place. I then implemented the encryption schemes and the server components enabling the secure storage and transfer of Persona Data. Components to create, edit and delete data were packaged and published as services to be used by the Persona Client. Future extensions of this project could include exploring custom credential generation based on Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) and Extensible Access Control Markup Language (XACML) which together can be used to specify XML-based credentials and access control policies for an enterprise. Other extensions include the implementation of discretionary and mandatory security policies using XACML to allow users to conduct transactions across various domains. Title: Persona concept : system architecture and prototypes Author: Subramanium, Mahesh This project explores a security framework, called the Persona Concept, aimed at giving the user greater control over their private data in cyberspace, in particular, their electronic credentials. The background for the Persona Concept, along with the requirements identified can be found in three (3) technical publications produced by Kal Toth and myself in 2003 (see list of references [1], [2] and [3]). The Persona Concept uses a Persona Server as the secure storehouse for persona data such as credit card and bank account identifiers as well electronic credentials such as X.509 certificates. The data is secured using public key encryption. The server component interacts with the user via a Persona Client which obtains X-509 Certificates on behalf of the user from a Certification Authority (CA) service. Interaction among the various components (Persona Server, Persona Client and Certification Authority) is enabled by the use of Web Services. This project focused on managing the user data across these components including the creation, secure storage and retrieval of Persona data to and from the Persona Server using Simple Object Application Protocol (SOAP) and under the control of public key encryption schemes. SOAP is an open XML-based application-level Internet protocol for implementing distributed access to object-oriented services deployed on the Web. SOAP is designed to allow applications running on a range of platforms to access remote objects and applications on servers across a TCP/IP network. In addition to this, the project built upon the work by Ike Chen (OSU M.S. graduate project in 2004) [4] by enabling X-509 Certificate file transfer between the client and Certification Authority using SOAP (improvements were made to the mechanisms for transferring files, particularly in support of X.509 certificates). The most popular of these extensions take the form of plug-ins, applets, and "document scripts" such as Java Script. However, because these extensions have been created in a haphazard way by a variety of independent groups, they suffer greatly in terms of flexibility, uniformity, and interoperability. Interactive HTML is a system that addresses these problems by combining plug-ins, applets, and document scripts into one uniform and cohesive architecture. It is implemented as an external C library that can be used by a browser programmer to add client-side services to the browser. One of the most often highlighted aspects of EBFM is the relevance of predator-prey interactions in the aquatic ecosystems. The motivation is that there are considerable trade-offs between the supporting role of forage species as energy conveyors in food webs and provisioning service as target species to fisheries. We study this aspect by looking at the Chesapeake Bay. The motivation is a recent debate on the potential impact of excessive forage base fishing. In particular, we are interested in the propagation of forage overfishing through the food web and its influence on more valuable, higher trophic species fisheries. We develop a Bayesian model of recreational harvest of striped bass where benefits are derived from stock size as well as age structure. The age structure drives the probability of catching a fish of a particular size what is of considerable importance to the fishery highly constrained by minimum catch size regulations. Then, using a dynamic multispecies framework (Ecosim) and modified random utility model, we analyze multiple scenarios varying by menhaden regulations and derive benefits changes imposed on the striped bass recreational fishery. We focus on the recreational sector as recent research indicates that the recreational fishing is becoming increasingly important and new management strategies may be necessary to address this shifting trend. As part of a redesign of the Oregon State University (OSU) Libraries’ Web site, entry points for specific user groups were created. One of these user groups was graduate students. The purpose of this study was to explore the ways that other academic libraries are designing their Web sites for particular user groups, specifically graduate students, in order to determine how the OSU Libraries Web site compared to peer institutions. This study analyzed 112 Association of Research Libraries’ (ARL) Web sites and 26 Oregon academic libraries’ Web sites to determine the availability of resources and services specifically promoted to graduate students. Since graduate students may view the library Web site through the lens of either new student, researcher or instructor, Web sites were also examined to see if sites were created with any or all of these roles in mind. Nearly a quarter of the ARL Web sites examined contained a link on the home page for graduate students, and another twenty percent provided graduate student information at a lower level in their Web site hierarchy. A majority of sites had events, subject or course guides for graduate students. Information for graduate students was typically framed in the context of graduate students as researchers. Ideas and examples are given for ways to improve Web site design to better serve this user group. To meet this challenge, pertinent information technology is needed to track web traffic patterns and user behavior (e.g. web mining), addressing immediately the difficulties encountered by end-users. The machine's capability to track potentially unsuccessful searches depends on human experts' ability to identify trouble signs, and add value to the electronic transaction experience with their experiences and skills. The present research focused on examining the respective value of live chat services and reputation systems in reducing potential consumers' perceived risk and simultaneously increasing their initial trust towards an unfamiliar e-retailer. The present research tested an e-retailing trust model based on the consumer decision making process. The model incorporated the following variables: (1) live chat service, and (2) reputation system, and explanatory variables: (1) perceived risk and (2) an initial trust. Customer prediction of purchasing is the response variable. The moderating role of interdependent and independent self-construal on online consumers’ behavior was also examined. Based on the review of literature, the following hypotheses were developed: (H1) Perceived risk associated with an unfamiliar web retailer will vary as a feature of the reputation system feature of a web retailer; where the reputation is positive, perceived risk will decrease. The second study (Chapter 3) analyzes the results of this food web model from an ecological perspective, which includes the first complete description of the carbon budget of an intertidal seagrass food web incorporating isotopic information. Linear inverse modeling (LIM) is a technique that estimates a complete network of flows in an under-determined system (e.g., a food web) using a combination of site-specific data and previously published data. This estimation of complete flow networks of food webs in marine ecosystems is becoming more recognized as a powerful tool for understanding ecosystem functioning. However, diets and consumption rates of organisms are often difficult or impossible to accurately and reliably measure in the field, resulting in a large amount of uncertainty in the magnitude of consumption flows and resource partitioning in food web models. In order to address this issue, Chapter 2 utilized stable isotope data to help aid in estimating these unknown flows. δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N isotope data of consumers and producers in the Marennes-Oleron seagrass system were used in Bayesian mixing models; the output of which were then used to constrain consumption flows in an inverse analysis food web model of the seagrass ecosystem. We hypothesized that incorporating the diet information gained from the stable isotope mixing models would result in a more constrained food web model. In order to test this, two inverse food web models were built to track the flow of carbon through the seagrass food web on an annual basis, with units of mg C m⁻² d⁻¹. The first model (Traditional LIM) included all available data, with the exception of the diet constraints formed from the stable isotope mixing models. The second model (Isotope LIM) was identical to the Traditional LIM, but included the SIAR diet constraints. Both models were identical in structure, and intended to model the same Marennes- Oleron intertidal seagrass bed. Each model consisted of 27 compartments (24 living, 3 detrital) and 175 flows. Comparisons between the outputs of the models showed the addition of the SIAR-derived isotopic diet constraints further constrained the solution range of all food web flows on average by 26%. Flows that were directly affected by an isotopic diet constraint were 45% further constrained on average. These results confirmed our hypothesis that incorporation of the isotope information would result in a more constrained food web model, and demonstrated the benefit of utilizing multi-tracer stable isotope information in ecosystem models. In Chapter 3, Ecological Network Analysis (ENA) was used to investigate the functional ecology of the system. The majority of seagrass food web studies thus far have relied on trophic marker analyses (i.e. stable isotopes, fatty acids) to investigate food sources and trophic positions, and as a result, few studies have examined seagrass beds from a perspective of whole-ecosystem functioning. By quantifying the Marennes- Oleron seagrass food web using linear inverse modeling coupled with results from isotopic mixing models, this study investigated the relative trophic importance of primary producers in the system, the trophic structure of the seagrass bed flora and fauna, the relative importance of allochthonous versus autochthonous carbon, and both the sequestration and export of organic carbon to the surrounding environment. Additionally, results of these analyses were compared with other coastal systems, including a neighboring bare mudflat located in the Marennes-Oleron estuary. Grazing rates indicated that microphytobenthos was directly consumed about 7 times more than Zostera, while a novel metric of total food web dependency derived from network analysis showed the consumer compartments relied upon microphytobenthos 22 time more than on Z. noltii via direct and indirect pathways. Meiofauna was found to provide an important link between primary production and detritus with upper trophic levels (i.e. fish). Autochthonous carbon was utilized over 4 times more than allochthonous carbon by the seagrass food web in total, and the system was shown to be a net carbon sink. Our analysis supported the concept that seagrass meadows have a high metabolic capacity and the ability to accumulate large sedimentary carbon pools (e.g., carbon sequestration), which are important climate-regulating ecosystem services. ENA revealed the Oleron seagrass bed to be a relatively mature, stable system internally, with strong connections via energy transport to and from surrounding environments. When the writers of infodoodads began blogging in December 2006 they hoped to pool their collective intelligence and make keeping up a little bit easier. The intended audience was one another, fellow librarians, and anyone else looking for irreverent, easy-to-read reviews of established and emerging web 2.0 tools. The result: a successful group-authored blog, infodoodads, where the writers review and discuss new and existing tools, services, and technology for finding and using information on the internet. Three of the six authors behind infodoodads will share lessons they've learned over the past year by giving a behind-the-scenes look at infodoodads and blog post creation, which will be especially useful for new or soon-to-be bloggers interested in seeing how an established blog operates. This session will also cover a brief history of infodoodads, how the authors find, select, and evaluate new tools, how they manage a collaborative partnership of six writers, how the blog has evolved based on reader preferences, and how they promote and increase readership. In addition the writers will cover valuable information about choosing a blog platform, starting a blog, and helpful tips on effective blog writing. The authors will conclude with a discussion about favorite web 2.0 tools. Clinical supervision serves a key component in ensuring practitioners' competency and professional identity. This practice also allows more skilled clinicians to serve as gatekeepers to the field, which helps protect clients and the profession. As the use of the Internet increases, many clinical services, including supervision, are more common in this environment. The purpose of this dissertation is to produce two manuscripts, each summarizing a study related to the use of web-based clinical supervision of counselors (i.e., cybersupervision). Using a t test, the first study compared supervisees' perceptions of the effectiveness of supervision when participating in online, full-spectrum, synchronous cybersupervision as compared to engaging in traditional, face-to-face clinical supervision. The results indicated no significant difference in either condition. This suggests that the practice of cybersupervision may be as effective as that of traditional, face-to-face supervision. The second study examined how supervisees experience cybersupervision. The data revealed that supervisees tend to focus most of their energy on establishing an authentic relationship with their clinical supervisors. The quest to attain such authenticity is impacted by an amalgamation of environmental, interpersonal, and intrapsychic factors. Of these, the supervisee's feelings of anxiety and the supervisor's ability to establish rapport were most notable. Designs followed the AASHO standard of the time, which permitted higher shear stress in concrete and reduced detailing requirements than permitted by current specifications. Many of these bridges exhibit diagonal cracking of the main girders and bent caps that has been attributed to the design as well as increased traffic volume and truck load magnitudes, and temperature and shrinking effects. While these RCDG bridges are nearing the end of their design lives, wholesale replacements or renewals are not possible due to the large numbers of bridges, and many remain in service. In order to develop a methodology for assessment of vintage RCDG bridge bent caps, a total of six realistic full-scale replicas of in-service bent caps with 1950s vintage details, including the overall geometry, reinforcement configuration, and material properties were constructed for laboratory tests. The test specimens were a subassemblage of the pertinent bridge components at the bent cap region including the integral columns, cap beam, and portions of the monolithic internal girders that frame into the cap. Test variables included shear span-to-depth (a/d) ratio, number of flexural bars anchored in the columns, flexural reinforcement cut-off locations, web reinforcement size and grade, and loading type (static and fatigue loading). The bent caps were loaded indirectly, similar to their in-field counterparts, via portions of the integral girders. The specimens were loaded to failure using an incremental cyclic load protocol. To simulate the effect of 50 years of ambient traffic loading, 1,000,000 cycles of fatigue loading, based on a unique load protocol derived from in-situ measured stress ranges from three in-service bridges, was applied to one of the specimens prior to failure testing. Various analytical methods were applied to the laboratory specimens for capacity prediction, including ACI 318 shear design methods, the Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT) sectional analysis approach, strut-and-tie models, mechanical models, and non-linear finite element analysis. The embedded reinforcement at the anchorage zone, the web reinforcement, and the a/d ratio were all found to be pertinent parameters which affect the strength of bent cap specimens. High cycle fatigue did not cause a significant degradation in the ultimate capacity for a specimen with light web reinforcement, although debonding of the stirrups was observed at the characteristic diagonal crack vicinity. Best results for capacity prediction were achieved with non-linear finite element analysis and with The Modified Zararis Mechanical Model. Further finite element analyses showed that strength of specimens with heavy web reinforcement may be more sensitive to the effects of bond fatigue. (2) To what extent is there integration of Web 2.0 technologies in their multicultural education courses in the three teacher education programs in Taiwan? and (3) What are the perceptions of the teacher educators and the pre-service teachers regarding the opportunities and challenges of using Web2Quests to facilitate multicultural education? Based on the framework of social constructivism, the study employed both qualitative and quantitative techniques to answer the three research questions. The three universities were selected for data collection because of their strong, well-defined undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs. The research design included administering the Teacher Multicultural Attitude Survey and a Web2Quest Questionnaire, conducting focus group discussions with pre-service teachers and one-on-one interviews with teacher educators, analyzing the researcher's field notes, and reviewing the pre-service teachers' final Web2Quest projects. The findings of the study indicated that the majority of the pre-service teacher and teacher educator participants had positive attitudes toward multicultural education and the implementation of Web2Quest technologies into multicultural education courses. The teacher educators stated the belief that Web2Quest technologies could connect the pre-service teachers to a global audience to broaden their worldviews. Participants suggested that professional development is needed to help teachers design effective Web2Quests. This professional development may have a significant impact when preparing teachers and, ultimately, students to be productive global citizens. Introduction: Management of complex systems is facilitated through effective information systems that provide real-time data to decision makers. For example, instrument panels in airplanes ensure that pilots have well-designed feedback concerning the status of mission-critical variables. Problem: While pilots have dashboards for feedback and communication, healthcare executives may be unaware of effective use of evidence-based guidelines within their healthcare system. Purpose: The first objective of this research was to design and implement an automated intranet dashboard reporting performance measures for a geographically dispersed health system. The second objective was to describe how this dashboard might increase cooperation and coordination for individuals and organizations involved with healthcare delivery. Design: This research was exploratory in nature, employing descriptive research approaches. A convenience sample of healthcare executives completed a baseline survey at the start of the study assessing levels of communication and cooperation. After three months of exposure to the dashboard, participants were asked to complete a follow-up survey. All visits to the dashboard were recorded in a web server log file. Semistructured qualitative exit interviews were also conducted to explore reactions to the dashboard, experiences with receiving outcome reports, and barriers to communicating and coordinating with counterparts. Results: Descriptive analysis of paired survey scores found substantial increases on a number of survey items, suggesting that the dashboard contributes toward increased communication and coordination for healthcare executives. Introduction: Management of complex systems is facilitated through effective information systems that provide real-time data to decision makers. For example, instrument panels in airplanes ensure that pilots have well-designed feedback concerning the status of mission-critical variables. Problem: While pilots have dashboards for feedback and communication, healthcare executives may be unaware of effective use of evidence-based guidelines within their healthcare system. Purpose: The first objective of this research was to design and implement an automated intranet dashboard reporting performance measures for a geographically dispersed health system. The second objective was to describe how this dashboard might increase cooperation and coordination for individuals and organizations involved with healthcare delivery. Design: This research was exploratory in nature, employing descriptive research approaches. A convenience sample of healthcare executives completed a baseline survey at the start of the study assessing levels of communication and cooperation. After three months of exposure to the dashboard, participants were asked to complete a follow-up survey. All visits to the dashboard were recorded in a web server log file. Semistructured qualitative exit interviews were also conducted to explore reactions to the dashboard, experiences with receiving outcome reports, and barriers to communicating and coordinating with counterparts. In response to this need we considered how to best design assignment focused web pages that were accessible at point of need, reinforced learning outcomes and information literacy concepts, offered the ease of Internet searches, provided quick access to related library services, such as course reserves, and were scaleable for a campus with 16,000 undergraduates. Statistics provided by campus IT revealed that while nearly 90% of OSU students were enrolled in a Blackboard integrated course, just 50% of OSU faculty used Blackboard to teach their classes. Two major Colleges, Business and Engineering, do not use Blackboard at all. We decided that creating interactive course web pages that were platform independent and could be imbedded in Blackboard, faculty web pages, and alternative course management systems was critical if they were to be useful to the students. A key component for success is working with instructors to develop easy ways to imbed the pages. The OSU Interactive Course Assignment (IAC) Task Force is meeting its goal through a two-phased approach. In Phase I we created a modularized, customizable template that allows faculty librarians or course instructors to build library course assignments pages for any course. In Phase 2 we are developing a content management system to drive page creation. In this presentation we would discuss our process, the results of our usability tests and the survey responses of the students and faculty, and demonstrate the interactive course assignment template and the progress on the content management system. During Fall 2005, the IAC Task Force developed a basic template for course assignments that included several modules, such as a subject-specific federated search, contact information for the librarian and the instructor, direct access to course reserves, the class research assignment, and resources recommended by the librarian and by the instructor. We conducted usability tests with students and used the results to improve page functionality. These improved templates were then used to develop course assignment pages for two classes in Winter term 2006. We assessed the impact of the pages by surveying students about their use of them and their ability to identify library and other information resources, and by interviewing the course faculty about their perceptions of the pages. At this time librarians are incorporating increased functionality into the assignment pages, such as RSS feeds. The pages are being tested in multiple classes and we will be gathering evaluative information from students and instructors. The workshop (aka “ICAN 4”) engaged 32 participants from 12 countries, representing 26 organizations and multiple areas of scientific and technical expertise. This meeting was a follow-up to the successful 2008 workshop on “Federated Coastal Atlases: Building the Interoperable Approach” (aka “ICAN 3”) held in Copenhagen, Denmark, as well as the 2007 workshop on “Coastal Atlas Interoperability” (aka “ICAN 2” in Corvallis, Oregon, USA) and the 2006 meeting “Potentials and Limitations of Coastal Web Atlases” (aka “ICAN 1” in Cork, Ireland). ICAN 3 continued the momentum by identifying the additional opportunities for partnering on coastal web atlas development throughout Europe, demonstrating the atlas interoperability prototype to the European Environment Agency and its many partners, and initiating the development of a long-term strategy and governance model for ICAN. ICAN 2 examined best practices for achieving interoperability between atlases, and led to the design of a demonstration interoperability prototype using the metadata catalogues of two atlases. ICAN 1 examined state-of-the-art developments in coastal web atlases (CWAs) from Europe and the U.S., shared several case studies and lessons learned, and established key issues and recommendations related to the design, data requirements, technology and institutional capacity needed for these atlases. At the conclusion of ICAN 3 it was abundantly clear that ICAN had grown from a simple idea to the cusp of a formal virtual organization, which had captured the interest of the European Environment Agency (EEA), the European Commission, UNESCO, and several government agencies, companies, non-governmental organizations, and universities. However, much more work needed to be accomplished. Therefore, the activities of ICAN 4 included:  Discussions of final implementation structures for governance (including formal procedures for receiving new members), technical activities, and continued identification of funding opportunities, so that ICAN can formally incorporate as a virtual organization (aka “community of practice”).  Presentations on emerging atlases in European countries (especially the Mediterranean) and beyond that are making themselves relevant through policy, environmental and socio-economic indicator work and related themes.  Continued progress on our ontology and semantic interoperability work, with an eye also toward articulating the benefits of semantic interoperability at a broader scale to non-specialists. In this we look forward to the advice and assistance of MMI and SeaDataNet, as well as to the new NETMAR (Open Service Network for Marine Environmental Data) initiative, which has already developed conceptual framework documents in this area. To this end, we also: o Held a small “workshop within a workshop” for atlas administrators on how to become a new node in interoperability prototype. o Initiated strategies on making further improvements to all those nodes (according to the Shared Environmental Information Systems (SEIS) principles of sharing information for multiple purposes, using data and systems that are accessible and interoperable). o Facilitated further work on partnerships, infrastructure and data exchange formats, all with the overall objective of enabling the nodes to share and communicate with each other, avoid duplication, and streamline information management. Presentations and discussion of user issues, including better knowledge of our atlas users, their needs, and on continued inventory, assessment, and evaluation of atlases. To this end, we discussed as part of a small “workshop within a workshop” how to improve the functionality of CWAs for general users, especially as the technology continues to change.  Small group meetings on potential funding opportunities on both sides of the Atlantic (European Union, US National Science Foundation and government agencies) in order to continue the work of ICAN.  Initiation of plans for a major ICAN presence at Littoral 2010 in London (European ICAN partners), as well as a standalone ICAN Americas meeting in Wisconsin, USA. In addition, the ICAN workshop took place around a two-day Workshop on Maritime and Coastal Information Systems, organised by the EEA’s Environmental Information and Observation Network (EIONET), which was open to ICAN 4 attendees as well. The main objective of this meeting was to inform the many participating countries of the EIONET National Reference Centre (NRC) network and to allow for a first exchange of views on scope and roles in the new formation for this entity. Four participants of ICAN 4 were invited to give presentations at the EEA/EIONET workshop, which allowed EEA/EIONET to explore collaboration opportunities as a result of ICAN’s emergence. The US National Science Foundation (NSF) had originally awarded support for two ICAN workshops, so there will be a 5th international workshop (aka ICAN 5), at the headquarters of the UNESCO International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) in Oostende, Belgium, August 31 to September 2, 2011. IODE will co-host CoastGIS 2011 in Oostende immediately following ICAN 5. Five graduate programs in the United States participated in this study. Data was collected from program websites and through interviews with nine faculty members of those programs, three of whom are also the directors of the graduate programs that participated. This study found that the concept of disability is under-addressed in the curricula of these graduate programs. Findings also reveal, however, that when disability-related material is covered, it is within the framework of the minority model paradigm, which is congruent with the recommendations of disability rights activists. The interviews and web-materials revealed perceived barriers to including disability-related material explicitly in the curriculum as well as practices and suggestions on how to overcome these barriers. This paper concludes with practical suggestions on how current faculty and administrators in higher education can incorporate the concept of disability into student services-related graduate programs. Our team determined that open source would be an effective development methodology, as well as business model, to develop a new financial processor. While the undergraduate student transition has been studied extensively, the graduate student transition has not been studied in as much depth. It was the intent of the researchers conducting this study to research the graduate student experience as it pertains to the graduate student transition at Oregon State University. This research was conducted using a web-based survey which was sent to academic department heads with a letter of recommendation from the Dean of the Graduate School asking them to forward this survey onto their graduate student list-serves. The survey asked students a variety of questions about their overall experience, their relationship with their major professor, their satisfaction levels with services available to them, and also included a few open-ended questions that allowed students to expand on their comments. Approximately 12.6% of the students who received the survey responded and there was about a 5.8% response rate of the entire graduate student population. Although there was a wealth of information gained from the responses, no statistical analysis was conducted nor was a statistical significance determined. Despite the growing numbers of students utilizing technology in the admission process, the first part of this study has shown that female students, underrepresented students, and non-traditional students at Oregon State University, during the 1999-2000 academic year, still do not utilize the electronic application process as much as their majority counterparts. In general, the online application process at Oregon State is being underutilized since only 18.6% (98 out of 528) of students applied via the web. Lastly, although students varied in technological abilities before coming to Oregon State University, all 48 students during the one-on-one telephone interview stated that they had utilized a computer and online services (either in their room, a friend's computer, the library, etc.) the day of the interview. This leads Oregon State University to believe it is successfully integrating students into technology. Some of this is occurring by web registration, online access to the Valley Library (students are able to complete a good portion of their research without leaving their rooms), and instructors are developing webpages where students can retrieve assignments, course syllabi, class readings, notes, and more information regarding a particular course. Students demand access to these technologies in order to gain the knowledge and skills they need to compete in the job world. Admission professions working in institutions of higher education have the responsibility to meet this need. With leadership by admission representatives in areas of planning, implementation, and campus-wide collaboration, information technology can significantly improve student learning and change the way in which students are educated for years to come. This study combined aspects of wood science, mechanics, structural engineering, and mycology to assess changes in material properties of I-joists and small-scale, wood-composite shear walls over extended periods of wetting. Exposure time, total rainfall, and rain days were used to develop predictive models of ultimate flexural failure for I-joists subjected to long-term external exposure. I-joists were experimentally evaluated with a full-scale, six-point bending test followed by a web-flange seam tension test. Bending test failure modes progressed from pure shear to web buckling with prolonged exposure time. Variance in flexural strength nearly doubled after 27 days of exposure. Decreases in flexural strength became significant after 65 days of exposure, reducing capacity by 9%. I-joist flexural strength reduced to 18% after 138 days of exposure. The results illustrate the detrimental effects of exposure to wetting during construction, and support improved efforts to limit wetting. Properties of small-scale shear walls were evaluated in a similar study monitoring the effects of moisture exposure and fungal inoculating over time. Shear wall capacity was tested using a lateral point load at various exposure intervals. Initial shear wall capacity increased by 37% as the fasteners corroded, producing better withdrawal resistance. Shear wall assemblies with visual decay experienced losses in capacity ranging from 13 to 61%. Comparisons of moisture and density distributions showed that wetting had an effect on panel properties. When consumers do not have enough information from internal sources, such as knowledge and experiences, they search information from external sources, including market-dominated, consumer-dominated, and neutral sources. As the population of Internet users grows, consumer-dominated communication on the Web, also called Internet WOM, is also increasing. Consumer reviews, one of the ways consumers exchange opinions and experiences on products and services on the Web, have been successfully practiced. Nonetheless, research on the effectiveness of consumer reviews has not yet been done. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of consumer reviews, specifically the source credibility of consumer reviews according to different types of review features, such as content of reviews, presence of a reviewer’s photo, and type of a reviewer’s name. In addition, the relationship between the perceived credibility of a reviewer and the perceived risk associated with online purchase was also examined. Using an online survey method, two hundred and ninety-two female students voluntarily participated in this study and received extra credit points for their participation. A 2×2×3 complete factorial experiment was used to examine source credibility— attractiveness, expertise, and trustworthiness—of consumer reviews of apparel. The three independent variables were the content of reviews with two treatments (a general review and a specific review), the presence of photo with two treatments (absence of a reviewer’s photo and presence of a reviewer’s photo), and the type of a reviewer’s name with three treatments (anonymous, an identifiable with an ID, and an identifiable with a real name reviewer). The results revealed that 1) specific reviews increased source attractiveness, expertise, and trustworthiness, 2) a review without a photo of a reviewer increased source attractiveness and had no effect on the others, and 3) type of a reviewer’s name had no effects on source attractiveness, expertise and trustworthiness. An additional finding was that the higher the perceived source credibility the greater the reduction in the perceived risk associated with online shopping. The results of this study have implications for consumer researchers to further investigate the effectiveness of consumer reviews. Additionally, the findings can inform apparel e-retailers in determining whether to include consumer reviews as a feature and, if so, what criteria to include for consumer reviews. A 2×2×3 complete factorial experiment was used to examine source credibility— attractiveness, expertise, and trustworthiness—of consumer reviews of apparel. The three independent variables were the content of reviews with two treatments (a general review and a specific review), the presence of photo with two treatments (absence of a reviewer’s photo and presence of a reviewer’s photo), and the type of a reviewer’s name with three treatments (anonymous, an identifiable with an ID, and an identifiable with a real name reviewer). The results revealed that 1) specific reviews increased source attractiveness, expertise, and trustworthiness, 2) a review without a photo of a reviewer increased source attractiveness and had no effect on the others, and 3) type of a reviewer’s name had no effects on source attractiveness, expertise and trustworthiness. An additional finding was that the higher the perceived source credibility the greater the reduction in the perceived risk associated with online shopping. The results of this study have implications for consumer researchers to further investigate the effectiveness of consumer reviews. Additionally, the findings can inform apparel e-retailers in determining whether to include consumer reviews as a feature and, if so, what criteria to include for consumer reviews. Close

To shed light on the relationship in question, a general question was posed: How do teachers develop and extend their understanding and knowledge of teaching and learning with digital technologies (TPACK) in an online education experience? Three questions were used to guide this research: • What is the mediating effect of engaging in an online community of practice during the program on the participants' perspectives of teaching and learning with integrating digital technologies? • How do the instructional strategies used in the program mediate the development and support of an online community of learners? • What are the participants' perspectives of the development of their understanding of teaching and learning with digital technologies as a result of their participation in the online educational experience? Through a case-study analysis of interviews, classroom observation narratives, and online course artifacts, this study identified two primary mediating effects resulting from engagement in an online community of learners. The online community of learners provided an environment and structure in which the participants were able to share ideas and understandings of the content and concepts presented in the online courses. These academically focused interactions were a necessary component in facilitating individual TPACK building. An essential underlying element in both these effects was the importance of instructor monitoring and mediating of participant engagement in facilitating the formation and continued development of the online community of learners. Having the instructor act as a "vision keeper" throughout the entire program, where they monitored participant engagement and mediated these interactions to maintain an appropriate focus, was an essential component in initiating and continuing both socially and academically focused engagement behaviors. Growth rates (length and mass) at each ontogenetic stage were measured in three replicate tanks at four to five temperatures. Nonlinear regression was used to obtain parameters for independent stage-specific growth functions and a unified size- and temperature-dependent growth function. Specific growth rates increased with temperature at all stages and generally decreased with increases in body size. However, these analyses revealed a departure from a strict size-based allometry in growth patterns, as reduced growth rates were observed among pref lexion larvae: the reduction in specific growth rate between embryos and free-swimming larvae was greater than expected based on body size differences. Growth reductions in the preflexion larvae appear to be associated with increased metabolic rates and the transition from endogenous to exogenous feeding. In future studies, experiments should be integrated across life transitions to more clearly define intrinsic ontogenetic and size-dependent growth patterns because these are critical for evaluations of spatial and temporal variation in habitat quality. In the course of discussing how RIS might do this team exercise we concluded that using different tools for “communicating” to different audiences were needed. Within our department we used Google Groups to share items we discover and to comment on these among ourselves before summarizing our findings for a wider audience, the staff and faculty at OSU Libraries. We elected to start the “NextGen Libraries at OSU” blog and write what we hoped would be interesting posts on our findings for these topics. We recognized that we are not experts on these topics and wanted to provide a forum for the staff and faculty within the library to provide their insights by commenting on the blog postings. At the end of this pilot project a survey of the staff confirmed our belief that the blog has not proved a success for garnering greater participation within the library. At the time of this study there was no known calibration or testing of the model’s accuracy in steep, dissected terrain such as that of the Western Cascades of Oregon. This analysis used the simplified web-based version of FSWEPP to predict suspended sediment output from three small catchments located on the H.J. Andrews (HJA) Research Forest. Basins were either clear-cut, 25% patch-cut, or in old-growth control conditions. Inputting long-term site data from on-the-ground measurements, WEPP model fields were populated with the most basin-representative information possible. Four different model simulation strategies compared suspended sediment delivery both within individual basin scenarios, and also between the three basins. Results indicated that WEPP tended to over-estimate suspended sediment outputs across the treated basin scenarios relative to long-term ground data. A crude Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) f-test compared the differences in total mean suspended sediments delivered or predicted within each basin. Subsequent numbers suggested that at least two of the basins’ means were significantly different between various model scenarios as well as the Andrews dataset. Though Disturbed WEPP was ultimately not a convincing prediction tool in this investigation, the study provided both background and foundation for further model testing and calibration. Given the wealth of long-term data available from the HJA, the model may merit further ground-testing and calibration against the backdrop of this climate and terrain. Incorrect setup and configuration on an individual’s own system is a common problem when using these software tools. This thesis explores the difficulty that these setup and configuration problems create for the student learning experience as well as the instructor teaching experience. We interviewed ten instructors and four students as part of a qualitative study to gather data about the severity of this problem in preventing student learning and effective delivery of material. The participants were chosen from Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Statistics, and Robotics classes. The main criterion for the class selection was whether that class’ usage of software came with the potential of running into configuration issues. The study shows that almost all classes did suffer from configuration issues in software tools; these issues distracted the students from actual coursework, forcing them to expend their time and energy on resolving these issues instead. It was also found that instructors and students often resorted to a “use whatever works” or a “trial and error” strategy for dealing with the issues encountered, which did not guarantee the issues’ resolution. To help instructors and students resolve a substantial portion of these setup and configuration issues with software tools, we propose the design of a virtualized system which leverages an existing cloud tool OpenStack. This system modifies the services provided by OpenStack to enable easy access to preconfigured Virtual Machines which help to resolve these issues with setup and configuration. However, these guidelines, known as NOS-NGS 58 and 59, were developed based on technologies and experiences in the 1990s. Since then, GNSS-related technologies continue to improve, including increases in accuracy and availability of orbits, the completion of additional Global Navigation Satellite Systems, and the construction of more robust GNSS receivers and antennas. By closely following NGS 58 and 59 guidelines, a ten day static GPS survey campaign was conducted in Oregon during the summer of 2014. The resulting GPS baselines were processed in commercial software, Leica Geo Office (LGO©), and the final static network was adjusted by least squares in MicroSurvey STAR*NET©. From the network adjustment, the estimated error in elevation at each station ranged from plus or minus 0.8 to 1.8 cm at 95% confidence, with an average error in elevation equal to plus or minus 1.3 cm at 95% confidence. For comparison, the data was also post-processed in OPUS-Projects, a web-based program recently released by NGS for surveys involving multiple sites and multiple occupations. This comparison showed that a user-defined network in OPUS-Projects with a central hub tightly constrained to International GNSS Service (IGS) active stations yielded results most similar to those found in the commercial software. The average difference in elevations when comparing the commercial software solution with the final network in OPUS-Projects was only 5 mm. Lastly, this paper makes recommendations on how NGS 58 and 59 could be optimized by changing network configurations and changing the 1.5 cm RMS and 2.0 cm Up screening requirement to a statistical outlier identification approach. The next generation of irrigation scheduling applications must therefore be capable of providing operational advice in support of deficit irrigation strategies. However, the theoretical, technical, and practical challenges associated with deficit irrigation scheduling are far more complex than conventional (full) irrigation. This dissertation presents three distinct systems for addressing the analytical challenges of deficit irrigation management. The first section of the dissertation presents a simulation framework for agro-ecological simulation. The objective was to develop a method to enable the assembly of simulation models from previously and independently developed component models. Based on a requirements analysis of existing simulation models we developed the ModCom simulation framework. ModCom provides a set of interface specifications that describe components in a simulation. ModCom also provides implementations of the core simulation services. The framework interfaces use well-defined binary standards and allows developers to implement the interfaces using a broad range of computer languages. The Second section describes the Irrigation Efficiency Model (IEM). IEM explicitly analyzes irrigation efficiency, accounts for spatial variability of soil properties and irrigation uniformity, performs simultaneous scheduling for all fields in the farm, accounts for energy use and its associated costs, and uses both ET and soil moisture measurements to enhance the accuracy of the irrigation schedules. IEM was developed specifically for implementing Deficit Irrigation and therefore includes analyses that go beyond the requirements of conventional irrigation scheduling. The third section describes Irrigation Management Online (IMO), a web application for optimum irrigation management. This system uses IEM to generate and deliver irrigation scheduling recommendations. IMO has been developed specifically to support irrigation management when either water supplies or delivery system capacities are limited. This thesis uses the arthropod community as a metric to examine the multi-trophic responses to disturbances in California grasslands. Chapter 2 explores how the long-term exclusion of native vertebrate herbivores has impacted arthropod community and trophic structure at Hastings Natural History Reserve. Chapter 3 investigates the impacts of grazing and invasive plants on the arthropod community in a manipulative plant provenance x grazing experiment that had been in place for two years at the Sierra Foothills Research and Extension Center. Few long-term studies have explored the interactions between vertebrate herbivore guilds and the arthropod community. We studied the long-term impact on arthropod community structure and composition of removing vertebrate herbivores from a California oak savannah. We used paired plots to sample arthropods and plant communities inside and outside 11 long-term vertebrate exclosures. We found that arthropods respond to vertebrate access mainly via plant compositional shifts, but that different groups of vertebrates cause changes via different pathways. Large herbivores, including deer, caused a shift from native perennial to exotic annual plants which increased plant nutritional content and supported more herbivore and detritivore arthropods. Burrowing vertebrates such as gophers reduced the predatory arthropod community by reducing vegetation structure, releasing other arthropod groups and resulting in an overall increase in arthropod abundance. These results highlight that alterations to different parts of the vertebrate community can have qualitatively different effects on arthropod community structure. The invasion and spread of non-native plants and the prevalence of livestock grazing are two human-induced disturbances that can have widespread ecosystem impacts. We used a manipulative study to examine how the replacement of native perennial grasses by exotic annual grasses and the introduction of heavy cattle grazing impact arthropod community structure. Arthropod richness, diversity, and abundance did not vary predictably between native perennial and exotic annual grass communities, though arthropods responded to plant community characteristics. In the presence of grazing, arthropod biovolume increased in annual grass treatments, which could trigger a positive-feedback cycle with vector-transmitted plant pathogens to further increase the prevalence of non-native annual grasses. Arthropod community was strongly impacted by cattle grazing, which decreased the biovolume of predatory arthropods, causing a top-down increase in herbivorous arthropod biovolume. Grazing thus impacts plant composition both through the direct removal of biomass and increased plant species evenness, and through arthropod-mediated impacts. Together, these studies show that human alterations of different vertebrate guilds can impact the trophic structure of the arthropod community. Because arthropods mediate a number of ecosystem services, disturbances that alter arthropod assemblages can have far-reaching ecosystem impacts. First, I quantified the relationship between northern anchovy abundance with environmental variables at two spatial and temporal scales: 1) mesoscale, including sea surface temperature (SST), salinity (SSS), density (SSD), chlorophyll a, distance from shore, and depth; and 2) macroscale, including Pacific Decadal Oscillation Index, Multivariate El Niño Southern Oscillation Index, timing of the Spring Transition, and abundance of cold-water zooplankton. Anchovy densities increased significantly from 1999-2004, and decreased significantly from 2005-2006. SST and proximity to shore were the most consistent parameters explaining anchovy distribution. Year-class strength was highly correlated with, and presumably driven by, the abundance of cold-water copepods. Second, I characterized recruitment for northern anchovy by conducting microstructure analysis of saggital otoliths from late larval and juvenile life history phases collected in September 2006. I identified a protracted spawning period for northern anchovy ranging from June-August 2006. Juveniles that were spawned and hatched early in the summer 2006 had higher growth rates, but smaller back-calculated sizes-at-age during the larval phase, when compared to congeners spawned later that summer. Finally, I determined total lipid content and fatty acid signatures of northern anchovy and three other forage fish species during two contrasting periods of oceanographic conditions (summers of 2005 and 2006): Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax), Pacific herring (Clupea harengus pallasii), and whitebait smelt (Allosmerus elongatus). Forage fish lipid levels were lowest in 2005 and increased in 2006. Lichens are an important component of many ecosystems due to their contributions to biodiversity and their key ecosystem services, such as contributions to mineral and hydrological cycles and ecosystem food webs. Lichens are also of special interest because of their reliance on atmospheric deposition for nutrients and water, which makes them particularly sensitive to air pollution. Therefore, they are often used as bioindicators of air pollution, climate change, and general ecosystem health. This thesis examines the functional trait patterns of lichens in two contrasting regions with fundamentally different kinds of data. To better understand the patterns of lichen functional traits, we examined reproductive, morphological, and chemical trait variation along precipitation and temperature gradients in Oregon. Specifically, we measured traits of 102 macrolichen species collected from 166 USDA Forest Service program for Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) plots. These plots were located in a more-or-less continuous swath across Oregon between 43°W and 45°W. Plots were grouped into seven regions (the Oregon Coast, Coast Range, Willamette Valley, Western Cascades, High Cascades, Eastern Cascades, and Eastern Oregon). Using multivariate analysis techniques we found strong linear and nonlinear trait patterns along precipitation and temperature gradients, and were able to characterize the seven main regions of Oregon by the relative abundance of lichen traits. The literature on what lichen traits are most common in which habitats is sparse and anecdotal; understanding trait-habitat patterns could have management implications due to lichen importance as bioindicators and animal forage. Understanding how key traits are distributed among habitats could provide insight into potential air pollution impacts on certain habitats, animal movement among habitats, etc. To examine trait-habitat patterns, we measured the reproductive, morphological, and chemical traits of 429 lichen species collected haphazardly (without a formal sampling framework) from ten distinct habitats within Katmai National Park in southwest Alaska as part of a taxonomic inventory. Using multivariate analysis techniques we grouped habitats based on the expression of lichen traits and described the relative abundance of each trait in different habitats. Such behavioral changes include movement, which is influenced by subdividing and isolating habitats through which animals prefer to travel. Ecosystem services that depend on the ability of animals to move through the landscape could be affected by changes in habitat configuration. Pollination is one such process because access of pollinators to flowers is often the key determinant of plant reproductive success. Yet, relatively little is known about how forest fragmentation may influence the flow of pollen carried by forest-dwelling pollinators, such as hummingbirds. I evaluate how changes in the distribution of pollinators produced by habitat fragmentation in southern Costa Rica affects a pollination web occupied by a generalist tropical pollinator, the green hermit hummingbird (Phaethornis guy). I used radio-telemetry to measure patterns of space use by green hermits living in forested areas with different levels of fragmentation. I first characterize patterns of space use by green hermits at three scales: point, path and home range. I found that green hermits have marked preference for locations in forested areas with high density of Heliconia plants and canopy cover; prefer paths close to streams that minimize crossing large stretches of non-forested matrix; and establish their home ranges in areas with high forest amount. In addition, home range area was negatively related to the amount of forest within it and positively related to fragmentation per se. Average resource density within the home range appeared to be unrelated to the area covered by the green hermits. My observations indicate that while the presence of green hermits in an area is mainly determined by the amount of forest available, the way they move through a landscape will be strongly affected by habitat configuration. In this context, pollen transfer by green hermits will be limited by the presence of open, non-forested areas owing to matrix avoidance. In landscapes with small discontinuous patches, the total area covered by an individual green hermit is likely to be small so I hypothesize that the genetic variability of pollen it transports may be diminished. I also assess the effectiveness of a tool commonly used to study the effect of habitat fragmentation on animal movement: translocation experiments. Such experiments are purported to have important advantages of being time efficient and standardizing across individuals the ‘motivation’ to move. Yet, we lack tests of whether movement behavior of translocated birds reflects natural behavior of unmanipulated birds. I compared the routine movement behavior of green hermits to that of experimentally translocated individuals. Behaviors documented during translocation experiments reflected those observed during routine movements. Both translocated and non-translocated birds showed similar levels of preference for mature tropical forest at the point level and avoided moving across non-forested matrix while selecting streams as movement corridors at the path level. Movement rates (distance covered per unit time) were generally higher during translocation experiments. However, the negative influence of forest cover on movement rates was proportionately similar in translocation and routine movement treatments. My results show that movement behavior of birds during translocation experiments is similar to natural movement behavior of birds.
