The results show that trends in ET in spring and summer are determined primarily by trends in precipitation and snowmelt that determine water availability. From April to June, ET trends are mostly positive due primarily to earlier snowmelt and earlier emergence of snow-free ground, and secondarily to increasing trends in spring precipitation. From July to September trends in ET are more strongly influenced by precipitation trends, with the exception of areas (most notably California) that receive little summer precipitation and have experienced large changes in snowmelt timing. Trends in the seasonal timing of ET are modest, but during the period 1947–2003 when temperature trends are large, they reflect a shift of ET from midsummer to early summer and late spring. As in other studies, it is found that runoff is occurring earlier in spring, a trend that is related primarily to increasing temperature, and is most apparent during 1947–2003. Trends in the annual runoff ratio, a variable critical to western water management, are determined primarily by trends in cool season precipitation, rather than changes in the timing of runoff or ET. It was found that the signature of temperature-related trends in runoff and SM is strongly keyed to mean midwinter [December–February (DJF)] temperatures. Areas with warmer winter temperatures show increasing trends in the runoff fraction as early as February, and colder areas as late as June. Trends toward earlier spring SM recharge are apparent and increasing trends in SM on 1 April are evident over much of the region. The 1 July SM trends are less affected by snowmelt changes and are controlled more by precipitation trends. Are Oregon home economics teachers willing to assume leadership responsibilities for the trends? The six trends included in the study were related to programs for 1. The handicapped 2. The socio-economically disadvantaged 3. Occupational education 4. Coeducational classes 5. Specialized semester courses 6. Family life courses A questionnaire was constructed, validated, and sent to 394 home economics teachers in the State of Oregon to gain answers to the five questions as they related to the six trends. Of the questionnaires mailed out, 241 were returned and 160 (41 percent) were usable. Nearly one half of the respondents were 40 years of age or older. Approximately two thirds were married. Nearly 70 percent received their bachelor's degrees since 1940. Fewer than 15 percent of the respondents had master's degrees and over 80 percent of these were received since 1960. About one half of the teachers had taken from 1-42 quarter hours beyond their last degree. At least one half of the respondents had had six or fewer years teaching experience and some experience in teaching other subject matter areas. Most (two thirds) taught in senior high schools where enrollments of more than one half of the schools were less than 1,000. Nearly one half of the respondents did not indicate that boys were a part of their program. Analysis of data showed that the respondents held quite positive beliefs concerning each of the six trends. For every trend, except programs for the handicapped, at least 70 percent felt that the home economics education programs were very important or moderately important. Fewer than five percent had negative feelings about any of the trends excepting programs for the handicapped and occupational education where 30 percent and 12 percent of the replies were negative and most often showed the feeling that respondents felt other groups were better qualified. The respondents showed a general willingness to support the trends with at least three fourths giving positive replies for every trend except programs for the handicapped and coeducational classes. The majority of the positive responses showed that the respondents were most interested in indirect types of support rather than active support. Negative replies most often showed that respondents believed other programs were more important, that they did not have time to support the trend, or that there was no need for the program in their community. Over one half of the respondents were willing to further prepare themselves for involvement in the six trends and were most interested in family life courses, occupational education and programs for the socio-economically disadvantaged. Special workshops was most often indicated as the preferred method of preparation. Negative replies showed that respondents were more interested in other areas or were already prepared. At least 80 percent of the respondents were willing to assume teaching responsibilities for every trend except occupational education and programs for the handicapped. Respondents often said they would teach in these trends only if they were given special preparation or if they were given time to prepare. Replies in the negative category most often indicated that the respondents were already involved or were more interested in other areas. Although nearly 70 percent of the respondents would assume leadership roles for family life, specialized semester, and coeducational classes, fewer than one half would take on this responsibility for occupational education and programs for the socio- economically disadvantaged and fewer than one fourth would lead programs for the handicapped. Respondents who replied negatively felt that they did not have the background or did not have the time or interest. The following conclusions were reached. 1. The majority of the respondents held favorable attitudes about the six trends. 2. Programs for the handicapped, the socio- economically disadvantaged, and occupational education followed similar patterns of acceptance and of respondents' willingness to be involved, while coeducational classes, specialized semester courses, family life courses were more accepted than the first three trends. The information about existing trends in Clothing and Textiles was collected from literature published in Clothing and Textiles Teachers Conference Reports and in Home Economics journals In addition, twenty catalogs from schools offering majors in Clothing and Textiles were analyzed for course content and educational objectives. The schools were divided in large and small categories according to the number of students enrolled as majors in Home Economics. From the literature it was concluded that the following four pairs of opposing trends existed: development of creative abilities, the development of skills; breadth in subject matter, depth in subject matter; family centeredness, subject matter orientation; general education, and professional education. A questionnaire was devised which tested the opposing trends in the four areas of Clothing and Textiles (clothing construction, clothing selection, textiles, and consumer economics). The face-validity was checked by nine faculty members experienced in the area of Clothing and Textiles, and rechecked by three Home Economics department heads and one textiles advisor, before it was finally sent out. The questions in the first part were indirect forced-choice type and referred only to the beginning courses. In Part II, the eight trends were independently listed and each department head was asked to rate her department as to the amount of emphasis given on the issues. The questionnaires were sent to 112 colleges and universities in the United States which offered Clothing and Textiles as a major in their Home Economics program. The chairmen of the departments were asked to participate and to return the completed questionnaires, of which 54 percent were returned, The returned questionnaires were statistically analyzed in the following way: means were determined for the trends for the indirect questions in Part I and for the ranking of trends in Part II in order to determine whether the trends existed and which were considered most important; Pearson r correlations were used to find the relationships between any of the trends in Part I, in Part II, and between Part I and Part II; t-test of mean differences between large and small schools were computed for each trend to find whether the difference was significant; and an analysis of variance was performed to find the significance of variance within the four areas of Clothing and Textiles in each of the trends. Data collected revealed that the mean scores of trends differed and that breadth in subject matter scored highest in both parts of the device. Significant correlations existed between all trends in the indirect questions, and between a few trends in the direct rating scale. The relations of creativity in the latter with breadth, depth, family centeredness and subject matter were the most significant. Correlations existed between some of the trends in both parts of the questionnaire, namely: breadth, family centeredness, between general and family centeredness, and between professional and depth. The opposing trends were in the negative direction. The significant relations of all trends in the beginning courses might be due to the tendency to teach the mastery of skills, breadth in subject matter with subject matter emphasis in the professional curricula. There were no significant differences in the mean scores between large and small schools but significant F ratios were found within the four areas of Clothing and Textiles for each pair of variables for the small schools and between one pair of variables for the large schools. An analysis of the course offerings, course content, and educational objectives were made from the catalog material. This revealed differences between small and large schools in general requirements for graduation and course offerings in Clothing and Textiles. This dissertation investigated the impacts of tree height upon a range of physiological and structural characteristics of Douglas-fir foliage; relationships between structural and functional trends with height; and compensatory mechanisms that mitigate height-related growth constraints. Height-related trends in foliar physiological and anatomical characteristics were examined both within trees as well as between trees of different heights. Emphasis was placed on discovering the mechanistic nature of the observed growth constraints and adaptive strategies. This research was conducted in the interest of enhancing our knowledge of the causes of age- and size-related decline in forest productivity. The research conducted for this dissertation explored several previously uninvestigated mechanisms for size-related reductions in forest productivity that are associated with tree foliar structure and function. Height-related trends in foliar turgor associated with the gravitational hydrostatic pressure gradient were identified as well as subsequent impacts on leaf and shoot morphology. Osmotic potential declined with height providing evidence of osmotic adjustment to offset the height-related decline in leaf turgor. This osmotic adjustment occurred only seasonally, and not during the spring when turgor maintenance is most important for leaf expansion. Gradients in leaf turgor were reflected in height-related trends in leaf and shoot morphology. Previous work has documented height-related trends in foliar morphological characteristics and earlier studies have examined osmotic adjustment as an adaptation to drought and salinity stress. Height-related trends in foliar morphological characteristics have typically been attributed to light gradients along vertical profiles. The work in this dissertation is the first to evaluate the effects of the gravitational component of water potential on the osmotic, morphological and growth characteristics of foliage along a height gradient in tall trees. Trends in leaf hydraulic efficiency and safety along a height gradient were examined, and correlations between changes in leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) and changes in stomatal conductance (gs) were identified that provided evidence of a control mechanism for gs. A consistent relationship was discovered between changes in Kleaf and gs providing evidence that leaf tracheid embolism is associated with stomatal closure during periods of declining water availability. Hydraulic vulnerability curves of foliage collected at different heights indicated that increased height is correlated with reduced hydraulic efficiency and increased hydraulic safety. These opposing trends suggest the existence of a compensatory mechanism in foliage that functions to reduce hydraulic vulnerability at the expense of transport capacity. The research in this dissertation is the first to examine the dynamic relationships between leaf hydraulics and stomatal behavior in temperate conifers, and the first to examine how these characteristics are affected by tree height. Height-related trends in leaf xylem anatomical characteristics were examined and strong correlations were identified between these anatomical characteristics and the patterns of leaf hydraulic efficiency and safety that were observed in previous work for this dissertation. Theoretical estimates of leaf hydraulic efficiency (Kleaf-theoretical) based upon the Hagen-Pouseille equation and measured leaf tracheid anatomical characteristics were strongly correlated with laboratory measurements of Kleaf, providing further evidence of a causal relationship between height-related trends in both leaf tracheid anatomical properties and leaf hydraulic function. Earlier studies have documented connections between leaf anatomical characteristics and leaf physiological characteristics such as correlations between leaf architecture and gas exchange and leaf architecture and transport efficiency. The research in this dissertation however, is the first to examine the impact of tree height on leaf anatomical characteristics and associated shoot physiological properties. Trends in gas-exchange along a height gradient were identified, independent of the immediate effects of path length and gravitational resistance. Photosynthesis under ambient [CO2] declined with height in a manner that was consistent with height-related trends in mesophyll anatomy and independent of leaf nitrogen content. Analyses of mesophyll resistance from assimilation versus internal CO2 concentration (A-Ci) curves indicated that height-related trends in mesophyll resistance were correlated with trends in both photosynthesis and mesophyll anatomy along a height gradient. Analyses of integrated and instantaneous water use efficiency indicated that height-related trends in integrated water use efficiency are attributable to the effects of path length and gravity on stomatal behavior as opposed to a height-related trend in intrinsic foliar properties. The research in this dissertation is the first to isolate the influence of height-related trends in foliar structure on different gas exchange properties such as assimilation and mesophyll conductance, independent of the direct effects of vertical gradients in xylem tension on stomatal and photosynthetic physiology. Climate change has been predicted to cause widespread biodiversity declines. However, the capacity of climate envelope models for predicting the future of biodiversity has been questioned due to the mismatch between the scale of available data (i.e., global climate models) and the scales at which organisms experience their environment. Local-scale variation in microclimate is hypothesized to provide potential ‘microrefugia’ for biodiversity, but the relative role of elevation, microtopography, and vegetation structure in driving microclimate is not well known. If the microrefugia hypothesis is true, I expected to see areas on the landscape that remained relatively cooler (i.e., buffered sites). To test this, I collected temperature data at 183 sites across elevation and forest structure gradients in complex terrain of the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, USA (Chapter 2). I used boosted regression trees, a novel machine learning approach, to determine the relative influence of vegetation structure, microtopography, and elevation as drivers of microclimate and mapped fine-scale distributions of temperature across the landscape. Models performed extremely well on independent data - cross-validation correlations between testing and training data were 0.69 - 0.98 for ten selected climate variables. Elevation was the dominant driver in fine-scale microclimate patterns, although vegetation and microtopography also showed substantial relative influences. For instance, during the spring-summer transition, maximum monthly temperatures observed in old-growth sites were 2.6°C (95% CI: 1.8 - 3.3°C) cooler than plantation sites and minimum temperatures during winter months were 0.6°C (95% CI: 0.4 - 0.8°C) warmer. This suggests that older forest stands mediate changes in temperature by buffering against warming during summer months and moderating cold temperatures during the winter. Climate is generally considered most influential on species distributions at large spatial scales; however much microclimate variability exists within regional patterns. I tested whether this high degree of microclimate variability has relevance for predicting species distributions and occupancy dynamics of the Andrews Forest bird community. I collected bird occurrence data in 2012 and 2013 at all 183 sites with fine-scale temperature measurements. I used dynamic occupancy models to test the effects of temperature on occupancy and apparent within-season bird movement while statistically accounting for vegetation effects and imperfect bird detection (Chapter 3). Most species (87%) exhibited within-season shifts in response to local-scale temperature metrics. Effects of temperature on within-season occupancy dynamics were as large or larger (1 to 1.7 times) than vegetation. To test the degree to which population trends are consistent across scales, I estimated landscape-scale bird population trends from 1999-2012 for 38 species at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF) in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA and compared them to regional and local trends (Chapter 4). I used a new method - open-population binomial mixture models - to test the hypothesis that imperfect detection in bird sampling has the potential to bias trend estimates. I also tested for generalities in species responses by predicting population trends as a function of life history and ecological traits. Landscape-scale trends were correlated with regional and local trends, but generally these correlations were weak (r = 0.12 - 0.4). Further, more species were declining at the regional scale compared to within the relatively undisturbed HBEF. Life history and ecological traits did not explain any of the variability in the HBEF trends. However, at the regional scale, species that occurred at higher elevations were more likely to be declining and species associated with older forests have increased. I hypothesize that these differences could be attributed to both elevated rates of land-use change in the broader region and the fact that the structure of regional data did not permit modeling of imperfect detection. Applying a Fisher and Yates Table of Randomized Numbers to the total summer school population in each of the years between and including 1956 and 1962, a random selection of 250 students from each year was made. The 1750 students' I.Q. scores, their Iowa Percentile scores, and their Grade Point Averages in the basic yearly subject grades comprised the three variables upon which the statistical analysis was based. Preliminary computations revealed that the means of the three variables generally (15 times out of 18) increased over those of the previous year during 1956 through 1962, and the standard deviation of the various distributions generally remained similar. To determine whether there was a significant linear trend during the years under study and, if so, whether any deviations from that trend were significant, a test of linear regression was applied to the following null hypotheses: scores. (1) There is no linear trend exhibited by the mean I.Q. (2) The relationship of the mean I.Q. scores is not nonlinear. (3) There is no linear trend exhibited by the mean of the Iowa Percentile scores. (4) The relationship of the mean Iowa Percentile scores is not nonlinear. (5) There is no linear trend exhibited by the mean G.P.A. (6) The relationship of the mean G.P.A. is not nonlinear. Since the F-ratio for the linear trend of the mean scores of the I.Q. (8.99), the Iowa Percentile (5.07), and the G.P.A. (6.95) were all above the .05 level of probability (3.84), Null Hypotheses (1), (3), and (5) were rejected. With respect to significant deviations from this linear trend, the F-ratio indicated that the mean scores for the I.Q. (.13), the Iowa Percentile (.13), and the G.P.A. (.48) were all below the .05 level of probability (2.21). Therefore, Null Hypotheses (2), (4), and (6) were accepted. Among the more important findings from this study are: 1. Both demand for and availability of "enrichment" and "advanced" courses, as compared to "remedial" courses, increased during the seven-year period. 2. There was a statistically significant upward linear trend, without significant deviations, in the mean scores of the I.Q., the Iowa Percentile, and the G.P.A. during the years 1956 through 1962. Another purpose is to determine if, by the end of the first grade, male students interrupted their teachers more than female students. Two first grade teachers, one male and one female, were used. Each had two years of teaching experience. Classes consisted of 20 boys and 19 girls, all from predominantly White, middle-class backgrounds. There were 15 observation sessions of 25 minutes in each classroom. A frequency count of verbal interactions, interruptions and types of responses was made. These data were put into a contingency table from which the chi-square statistic was calculated as a test for significance. The Yates correction for continuity was used for types of responses. Interaction graphs were constructed to indicate possible trends. Significance was established at the .01 level of significance. This study quantified trends in daily streamflow from 1950-2012 in 28 pairs of gages above and below dams in the CRB, including the U.S. and Canada. Each gage pair consisted of an above-dam gage that is primarily forested and has little apparent human disturbance and minimal flow regulation or diversions, combined with a below-dam gage immediately downstream of a major dam and reservoir. Monthly streamflow and precipitation for a total of 59 sites was correlated with monthly indices of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), the Northern Pacific Index (NPI), the Pacific North America pattern (PNA), and the 700-millibar wind speeds (u700) using Pearson's r. Long-term trends and patterns in daily streamflow and climate data were estimated using linear regression, the Mann-Kendall test, and wavelet analysis. Streamflow was generally weakly correlated with NPI, PNA, and PDO, while positively correlated with upper elevation wind speed at low elevations during wet months. Fewer than half of above-dam gages in the CRB have experienced increasing trends in daily streamflow from mid-March to the beginning of May over the period 1950 to 2012, whereas a majority has experienced decreasing trends from the middle of May to the middle of October. The regional gravity field exhibits a broad regional high over the area surrounding Klamath Falls which may be caused by a shallow mantle or a large intrusive body at depth, or may simply be due to intense silicification of the area by thermal waters. The residual anomaly field exhibits broad bands of positive anomalies which enclose the negative anomaly associated with the Klamath graben. The easternmost of these broad, positive trends may correspond to the eastern flank of an anticline which may have existed prior to graben faulting. Positive anomalies west of the graben coincide with the Mount McLoughlin lineament. A large positive anomaly located south of Sprague River is interpreted to be a volcanic center and the heat source for thermal waters found in the Sprague River Valley. A two-dimensional cross section near 42°26' N. latitude suggests that step-like faults form the west side of the Klamath graben. The model indicates the presence of a high density body south of Sprague River that is interpreted to be a buried volcanic source for local extrusive volcanic rocks. These findings are counter to conclusions drawn in earlier research on national use trends and highlight the importance of the unit of measure to interpretation of trends. Trends implied by permit data differed from trends estimated by Forest Service personnel, and implications for Forest Service reporting are discussed. The second study compared day and overnight visitors to three high-use destinations in terms of their perception of social and ecological impacts of wilderness recreation, evaluation of impacts, and support for management actions. Overnight users were more likely to notice impacts, but predicted differences in reaction to impacts and support for management actions were not found. The only exception was that overnight users were more likely to object to management actions that would target overnight users. Results showed significant differences among study sites. The third study tested four methods of revegetating impacted campsites: scarification, importing organic material, transplanting, and transplanting with watering. These commonly used methods have not been systematically investigated previously. Six campsites in Three Sisters Wilderness were treated in 1991 and reevaluated in 1994. Importing organic material and scarification were found to improve vegetation recovery and species richness very little compared to controls, but both transplanting techniques had significant effects, often because of the presence of other species or propagules in the transplanted plugs. Watering was found to have no effect on the survival of transplanted mountain hemlock seedlings. Vegetative recovery was very slow with even the most effective treatments, which reinforces recommendations that managers adopt strategies of concentrating use. One of the most commonly diagnosed illnesses in the elderly population is cancer. Despite research to explain the consistent increase in incidence rates with age, the mechanisms are largely unknown. In order to explore the patterns in age-specific cancer incidence through visualization, tables and graphs were generated via SEER*stat of incidence statistics for each reported type of cancer, including all subtypes. More specifically, data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program was used to calculate age-specific rates by sex and race/ethnicity. Patterns were compared to a general trend line of the total cancer incidence from the years 1975-2013, with a focus on incidence in the age group 85+. Results varied substantially by cancer type. We defined four patterns within the cancers: an increasing trend with increasing age; a decreasing trend in older ages, a mixed pattern (some increasing, while others decrease within the same cancer type), and a bimodal curve which included peaks in childhood/adolescence and in older age. Trends varied greatly depending on the type of cancer, the age at which the cancers were diagnosed, the sex of the individual, and the race/ethnicity of the individual. Age-specific patterns in African-American populations were particularly noteworthy and are presented separately. In order to explore the patterns in age-specific cancer incidence through visualization, tables and graphs were generated via SEER*stat of incidence statistics for each reported type of cancer, including all subtypes. More specifically, data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program was used to calculate age-specific rates by sex and race/ethnicity. Patterns were compared to a general trend line of the total cancer incidence from the years 1975-2013, with a focus on incidence in the age group 85+. Results varied substantially by cancer type. We defined four patterns within the cancers: an increasing trend with increasing age; a decreasing trend in older ages, a mixed pattern (some increasing, while others decrease within the same cancer type), and a bimodal curve which included peaks in childhood/adolescence and in older age. Trends varied greatly depending on the type of cancer, the age at which the cancers were diagnosed, the sex of the individual, and the race/ethnicity of the individual. Data on forest cover by age class were obtained from Willamette National Forest. Up to 29% of area in sub-basins above dams was clearcut since the 1930s. From 1 to 51% of basin area above dams is on young (<7 ma) volcanic rocks of the High Cascades, which have longer water residence times than the older (7-25 ma) volcanic rocks of the western Cascades, which make up the remainder of basin area above dams. From 71 to 93% of basin area above dams is above 800 m elevation, where seasonal snowpacks are controlled by winter temperature and precipitation. Over the study period (1950-2010), precipitation in the Willamette River basin did not change significantly at the seasonal or annual time scale. Declining streamflows in spring and summer were found in low elevation basins above dams. These trends may be attributed to climate-warming-induced increases in the rain:snow ratio and earlier snowmelt, or changes in water use by vegetation in response to climate warming, or both. More rapid declines in summer and fall discharge and runoff ratios occurred in basins which experienced relatively rapid conversion of old to young forest in the past half-century and have relatively large proportions of young forest today. High-elevation basins with greater percentages of High Cascades geology are less susceptible to declining discharge, even if they have substantial areas in young forest. Flow downstream of the dams has become more homogenized throughout the year, with higher flows in the fall and declines in the later winter/early spring. The first day of spring (defined as the last day of freezing temperature) has moved earlier by 0.31 to 1.98 days/year at all sites, except the alpine site. However, the inherent bias in data collection and unknown relationship between lek counts and population size limits the utility of using counts to evaluate range-wide population trends. This study estimated trends in the male segment of greater sage-grouse breeding populations within core and periphery areas in seven habitat management zones during two time periods, 1965-2015 and 2005-2015. In addition, we compared analysis methods used in this study to previous studies, and provided recommendations on future data collection. We developed a hierarchical model that followed individual leks through time and allowed trends at individual leks to inform estimates of regional trends. We fit overdispersed Poisson models using a Bayesian hierarchical framework and Markov-chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. The average range-wide decline, weighted across management zones, was 2.10% per year, for an average total decline of 66% from 1965-2015. Estimates of trend over 2005-2015 for individual management zones, in both core and periphery areas, indicated that recent annual declines were more severe compared to the average declines over the entire analysis period 1965-2015. The declines estimated in this study were similar to other studies; however, review of the literature reveals numerous issues surrounding the historical data, the on-going monitoring and sampling scheme, and utilization of various statistical methods, all of which limit our inference on population trends. We believe the overdispersed Poisson regression model is the most appropriate analysis method for these and future data, regardless of whether the focus remains on peak male counts or total counts of observed sage-grouse based on a more spatially balanced sample of monitoring sites that are randomly selected. Trends within high population density core areas were compared to peripheral areas at range-wide and management zone scales. Trend estimates were also modeled at range-wide scales for the most recent 10-year period (2005-2015). Summary statistics on average males per lek indicate large variability in sage-grouse population size over time at all spatial and temporal scales. Our results support previous findings that have documented a long-term (1965-2015) decline of greater sage-grouse range-wide. The long-term (1965-2015) decline in average males per lek was estimated at 0.83% per year range-wide, and 2.7% and 0.5% for Management Zones I and II, and 0.70, 1.38, and 0.06% per year for Management Zones IV, V, and VI, respectively. Management Zone III showed an increasing trend in average males per lek of 0.19% per year. In 5 of 6 management zones, annual decreases were greatest in the periphery, and lower in core areas. This suggests that denser sage- grouse populations located within the core appear to be insulated more readily from population decline than those on the periphery. Grant County would have greater potential for an increase in the deer hunting activity if the density of hunters were controlled on public lands and if more private land becomes available for public hunting, Grant County would benefit economically from an increase in deer hunting activity because of increased expenditures by hunters. Private landowners are hesitant to permit public hunting because of damages caused by hunters on their properties. Landowners have also experienced economic losses because of damages caused by deer. Increased access to private land can not be expected unless private landowners are provided incentives to permit public hunting which will compensate for the economic losses resulting from deer and deer hunters on their properties. The Oregon Wildlife Commission appears most influenced by the estimate of trend in the deer population (measured in deer per mile) when determining the number of antlerless deer permits to issue for the hunting season. Change in snow depth for the previous 2 years may have a negative effect on the change in deer per mile from the previous year. The harvesting of antlerless deer may have a positive effect on the trend in the deer population. Inclusion of data on snow and antlerless harvest in the decision process may provide a better measure of the trend in size of the deer population than using only one estimate of population trend. The potential of the deer population to sustain an increased harvest was not determined. An angular unconformity separates the two Formations. The Lower Clarno Formation is composed of a lower Ross Flat Member dominated by epiclastic sedimentary rocks and an upper Heflin Creek Member composed primarily of pyroxene andesite lavas. The Upper Clarno Formation consists of two conformable units, a lower Q,uartz-bearing Andesite Unit and an upper Pyroxene Andesite Unit. A thin sequence of rhyolite flows is found near the top of the upper unit. Andesite, dacite and rhyolite rocks intrude the lavas and sediments of the Group. When plotted on a Peacock diagram the Clarno rocks are found to be calcic. The chemical variation diagrams and AFM plot of samples, however, follow talc-alkaline trends and compare favorably with rocks considered to be talc-alkaline by others. Most of the thesis area lies on the southern flank of the east-northeast trending Sutton Mountain Syncline.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Active deformation of the Cascadia forearc : implications for great earthquake potential in Oregon and Washington Author: Goldfinger, Chris Nine west-northwest-trending faults on the continental margin of Oregon and Washington, between 43° 05'N and 470 20'N latitude, have been mapped using seismic reflection, sidescan sonar, submersibles, and swath bathymetry. Five of these oblique faults are found on both the Juan de Fuca and North American plates, and offset abyssal plain sedimentary units left-laterally from 2.0 to 5.5 km. These five faults extend 8-18 km northwestward from the deformation front. The remaining four faults, found only on the North American plate, are also inferred to have a left-lateral slip sense. The age of the Wecoma fault on the abyssal plain is 600±50 ka, and has an average slip rate of 7-1 0 mm/year. Slip rates of the other four abyssal plain faults are 5.5 ± 2 - 6. 7 ± 3 mm/yr. These faults are active, as indicated by offset of the youngest sedimentary units, surficial fault scarps, offsets of surficial channels, and deep fluid venting. All nine faults have been surveyed on the continental slope using SeaMARC 1A sidescan sonar, and three of them were surveyed with a high-resolution AMS 150 sidescan sonar on the continental shelf off central Oregon. On the continental slope, the faults are expressed as linear, high-angle WNW trending scarps, and WNW trending fault-parallel folds that we interpret as flower structures. Active structures on the shelf include folds trending from NNE to WNW and associated flexural slip thrust faulting; NNW to N trending right-lateral strike-slip faults; and WNW trending left-lateral strike-slip faults. Some of these structures intersect the coast and can be correlated with onshore Quaternary faults and folds, and others are suspected to be deforming the coastal region. These structures may be contributing to the coastal marsh stratigraphic record of co-seismic subsidence events in the Holocene. We postulate that the set of nine WNW trending left-lateral strike-slip faults extend and rotate the forearc clockwise, absorbing most or all of the arc parallel component of plate convergence. The high rate of forearc deformation implies that the Cascadia forearc may lack the rigidity to generate M > 8.2 earthquakes. From a comparison of Cascadia seismogenic zone geometry to data from circum-Pacific great earthquakes of this century, the maximum Cascadia rupture is estimated to be 500 to 600 km in length, with a 150-400 km rupture length in best agreement with historical data. The Steamboat Creek basin drains 227 mi² (588 km²) of steep forested terrain into the North Umpqua River of Southwest Oregon, 39 mi (63 km) northeast of Roseburg. Summer base flows for Steamboat Creek average 83 cfs (2.35 m³/sec). Steamboat Creek and its tributaries are considered important to the production of summer-run steelhead; the basin has been closed to angling since 1932. Harvesting has occurred in every subdrainage of the Steamboat Creek basin. Trees were routinely removed from riparian areas when harvesting in the basin began in 1955. Since the mid-1970s to early-1980s, however, buffer strips were left adjacent to streams. In addition, the floods of 1964-65 caused significant damage to riparian vegetation in the basin. This study was undertaken to: (1) determine long-term trends over the period 1969-90 of summertime water temperatures in the mainstem of Steamboat Creek, selected tributaries, and in Boulder Creek, an unharvested control stream in an adjacent watershed and (2) evaluate spacial patterns of maximum water temperatures in the Steamboat Creek basin during the summer of 1990. Significant (P≤0.10) trends of decreasing maximum daily summertime stream temperatures on Steamboat Creek and tributaries occurred from 1969-90. In contrast, an unharvested control stream showed a small, but nonsignificant, increasing trend in stream temperatures. The largest decrease in maximum stream temperatures (7 to 11°F, 3.9 to 6.1°C) occurred on small streams with summer base flows less than 6 cfs (0.17 m³/sec). These streams also had the highest proportion of stream length adjacent to harvesting activities before 1974. The smallest decrease in maximum stream temperatures (0 to 3°F, 0 to 1.7°C) occurred on streams with little or no history of timber harvest activity along riparian areas, or at locations where summer base flows were greater than 15 cfs (0.42 m³/sec). Since no trends in either air temperature or streamflow were apparent over the 1969-90 period, regrowth of riparian vegetation that was previously removed by flooding, debris torrents, or streamside harvesting, appears to be the major cause of trends in decreasing maximum summer stream temperature. Regrowth of riparian vegetation provides shade over small streams, decreasing energy input to the stream from solar radiation. Maximum daily stream temperatures in lower Steamboat Creek did not change significantly during the 1969-90 study period and stream temperature data in 1960 indicates that maximum stream temperatures in lower Steamboat Creek have historically been high.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Soil moisture depletion trends under five plant species present on the Douglas-fir clear-cuts of Mary's Peak, Oregon Author: Drew, Stephen Ernest Soil moisture depletion trends under five plant species growing on the clear-cuts of the Marys Peak Watershed near Corvallis, Oregon, were followed during the summers of 1963 and 1964. The species were Holcus lanatus, Lotus crassifolius var. subglaber, Gaultheria shallon, Berberis nervosa, and Acer circinatum; and were dominant plants of several stages in a successional sere occurring on the clear-cuts. Sampling of the moisture trends was limited to two clear-cut areas in order to reduce the variability due to location. On one area, Gaultheria, Berberis, and Lotus were growing in individual, pure stands. On the other, Acer was growing in closely grouped clumps and Holcus occupied the areas in between, The soil moisture was measured by an electrical resistance method. Plaster-of-paris blocks were installed at 6-, 12-, and 24-inch depths at nine locations in each species. The measurements were taken two or three times a week with an ohmmeter and expressed as an average in terms of atmospheres of tension for each day and depth. Supporting information on the precipitation, root distribution, and soils was also obtained. A root count for roots less than two millimeters in diameter was made from the face of a trench dug in each species. Soil descriptions made of the trench profiles, a particle size analysis, and 15 atmospheres determinations indicated that the soils of the two clear-cuts were similar. Each species had characteristic moisture depletion trends during the two years. Trends for Gaultheria indicated slow rates of moisture loss at all three depths and very little influence of precipitation. Gaultheria, an evergreen shrub, has thick, leathery leaves (characteristics which are generally associated with few stomata) and has a long period during which new stems emerge. The roots were concentrated near the surface just under the one and half to two inches of litter, and a few were growing inside large, dead roots of Douglas-fir. Depletion trends associated with Berberis were similar to Gaultheria except moisture losses at the 6-inch depth were more rapid. Berberis plants are also evergreen shrubs and have thick, leathery leaves but grow during a short period in the spring. Most of the roots developed in the top few inches of soil. Litter accumulation was slightly less (one to one and a half inches) and was not as uniformly distributed. Under Lotus, moisture trends at 6 and 12 inches fluctuated considerably. Depletion rates were rapid at all three depths. Lotus, a herbaceous species, grew quickly and flowered in the spring, then died back in mid-summer, evidently allowing increased infiltration of the rainfall. The rhizomes penetrated throughout the profile. Litter accumulation was about an inch, and the soil surface was somewhat rocky. Acer clumps grew during the spring and maintained their leaves throughout the summer. Such comparatively large plants (six to seven feet high) evidently had a high transpirational stress, and along with the one to two inches of litter, intercepted most of the precipitation. Root concentration decreased gradually with depth. This study provides a partial explanation for the replacement of Holcus by Lotus. It appears that Lotus is able to invade Holcus by producing rhizomes which grow underneath the dense root system of Holcus and utilize the moisture there. Lotus then increases in dominance by sending up shoots from the rhizomes. Possible explanations for the replacement of other species were not evident; however, there were some interesting correlations of the results with the sequence. With each advancing stage the depletion trends became more consistent. And, except for Lotus which had the smallest number of roots, the root count decreased with each advancing stage. The decrease was a reflection of an increase in the relative size of the roots. Results of this study are applicable to forest regeneration problems. Title: Soil moisture depletion trends under five plant species present on the Douglas-fir clear-cuts of Mary's Peak, Oregon Author: Drew, Stephen Ernest Soil moisture depletion trends under five plant species growing on the clear-cuts of the Marys Peak Watershed near Corvallis, Oregon, were followed during the summers of 1963 and 1964. The species were Holcus lanatus, Lotus crassifolius var. subglaber, Gaultheria shallon, Berberis nervosa, and Acer circinatum; and were dominant plants of several stages in a successional sere occurring on the clear-cuts. Sampling of the moisture trends was limited to two clear-cut areas in order to reduce the variability due to location. On one area, Gaultheria, Berberis, and Lotus were growing in individual, pure stands. On the other, Acer was growing in closely grouped clumps and Holcus occupied the areas in between, The soil moisture was measured by an electrical resistance method. Plaster-of-paris blocks were installed at 6-, 12-, and 24-inch depths at nine locations in each species. The measurements were taken two or three times a week with an ohmmeter and expressed as an average in terms of atmospheres of tension for each day and depth. Supporting information on the precipitation, root distribution, and soils was also obtained. A root count for roots less than two millimeters in diameter was made from the face of a trench dug in each species. Soil descriptions made of the trench profiles, a particle size analysis, and 15 atmospheres determinations indicated that the soils of the two clear-cuts were similar. Each species had characteristic moisture depletion trends during the two years. Trends for Gaultheria indicated slow rates of moisture loss at all three depths and very little influence of precipitation. Gaultheria, an evergreen shrub, has thick, leathery leaves (characteristics which are generally associated with few stomata) and has a long period during which new stems emerge. The roots were concentrated near the surface just under the one and half to two inches of litter, and a few were growing inside large, dead roots of Douglas-fir. On average 41% (34%) of the total NDJFM sensible (latent) heat flux takes place during just 17% (20%) of the days. Over the last 60 years, seasonal NDJFM sensible and latent heat fluxes over the Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) Mode Water Dynamic Experiment (CLIMODE) region have increased owing to an increased number of high flux event days. The increased storm frequency has altered average wintertime temperature conditions in the region, producing colder surface air conditions over the North American eastern seaboard and Labrador Sea and warmer temperatures over the Sargasso Sea. To understand sequestration of Hg into primary feathers, we examined patterns of Hg concentrations among the 9 primary feathers of individual birds where molt order was known. Hg concentrations in the left primary feathers from 30 salvaged individual specimens from families Turdidae and Passeridae (Catharus ustulatus, Ixoreus naevius, Turdus migratorius, Melospiza melodia, Zonotrichia atricapilla, Passerella iliaca, Pipilo maculatus, Junco hyemalis) were measured. Preliminary results indicated that a conclusive trend in Hg concentration with increasing primary feather number was lacking, with only small variation in Hg concentration among primary feathers. A mixed effects repeated measures test yielded a p value of 0.2700 with ppm as the fixed effect and bird i.d. as a random effect. Similar studies in seabird primaries have shown strong downward trends in Hg ppm with molt order. The lack of a trend in songbird primaries may be influenced by diet shifts during molt or changes in sequestration to other feather tracts and body tissues. Cretaceous strata constitute all the exposed outcrops on the island, which is the northernmost of the Gulf Island chain of British Columbia. The upper four formations of the Nanaimo Group are recognized, totalling 2707 feet in composite section, The thinly laminated marine mudstones and siltstones of the Northumberland and Spray Formations are separated by deltaic sandstones and conglomerates of the Geoffrey Sandstone. The younger Gabriola Sandstone lacks the conglomerate units. Although unconformities between the formations may exist on a regional basis, locally the major contacts are sharp and planar. The marine strata are characterized by fine-grained, thinly laminated beds, and an abundant ammonite fauna, indicative of a low energy, open marine environment. The deltaic units are mediumto coarse-grained arkosic wackes and pebble-cobble conglomerates representing a nearby source, and a high energy, nearshore environment in which little sediment reworking occurred and burial was rapid. The minerals and lithic clasts of the deltaic units exhibit practically no variation throughout the sections. Source areas are considered to be the older formations on Vancouver Island. Channel axis measurements of festoon trough cross-bedding, plus orientation of sole marks and parting lineations, indicate a predominant northwest current transport direction for the upper two formations. Soft-sediment slumping and flame structures support the probability of a northerly to northwesterly declining paleoslope. The Cretaceous sequence forms the broad, open, east trending Gabriola syncline. Intersecting the axis of the syncline on the north end of the island is the tight, asymmetrical, northeast-trending Lock Bay anticline. Northwest-trending vertical faults occur parallel to the axis of the Gabriola syncline. Cross-cutting the syncline axis at both ends of the island are northeast-trending vertical faults. Except for that involving the steep limb of the Lock Bay anticline, no folding of the strata was observed. Although further work is needed, it is postulated that the Sp-ay Formation marks the end of basinal downwarping of the Georgia Seaway and the Gabriola Sandstone marks the close of Cretaceous tectonic activity within the coastal ranges of Vancouver Island. Using a system of qualitative indicators may provide a cost-effective method to create preliminary assessments of the relative status of minor rockfish stocks and subsequently prioritize future studies. This project was undertaken to test a system of indicators to characterize the status of West Coast rockfish species including Sebastes aurora, S. babcocki, S. aleutianus, S. zacentrus, S. borealis, S. diploproa, and S. reedi. An array of indicators including catch per unit effort, the proportion of positive hauls, and length composition data were used to detect possible changes in the density, distribution, and size composition of the population. Data were taken from three West Coast bottom trawl surveys conducted by the National Marine Fisheries Service. The percentage of trends indicating linear decline were summarized and stocks were subsequently ranked in order of greatest concern over declining populations. S. babcocki was ranked as the stock of greatest concern with 52% of the indices showing negative trends while negative trends for S. diploproa, S. zacentrus, and S. borealis were found in 26%, 23%, and 20% of the indices, respectively. These formations are: early Campanian Geoffrey Formation which encloses a tongue of the Northumberland Formation; early Campanian to late Maestrichtian Spray Formation; and Maestrichtian Gabriola Formation. The stratigraphic succession has a maximum composite thickness in excess of 6, 400 feet. The formations are the product of two types of deposition: 1) non-marine fluvial, and 2) nearshore to offshore marine. The nonmarine and marine deposits intertongue throughout the sequence resulting in two cycles of upward-coarsening grain size, interpreted as having formed in a short-headed stream-delta. Paleocurrent direction data and modal analyses of the formations indicate the particles composing the rocks, predominantly quartz, feldspar, mica, and volcanic rock fragments, were derived from the pre-Cretaceous rocks of the coastal mountains of Vancouver and Saltspring Islands that lay to the south-southwest. The Galiano area is structurally simple. The area, located entirely on the northeast flank of the Trincomali Anticline, consists of strata that form a simple homocline dipping northeast. Faults are not common. The fault system trends N. 200 E. and consists of steeply dipping normal faults, southeast blocks down relative to northwest blocks. I investigated habitat use and home range size of northern goshawks in the southern Cascades, in the Shasta- Trinity and Klamath National Forests of northern California. My objectives were to 1) estimate the average home range and 2) describe the use of habitats within home ranges by breeding goshawks. Ten goshawks (5 males, 5 females) were trapped, radio-transmitters attached, and tracked for approximately 50 days during the breeding season in 1988 and 1989. A mean of 33 data points per bird (range = 27-43) produced home range estimates (100% minimum convex polygon method) of 2,425 ha (range = 1083-3902 ha) for 5 males and 3,774 ha (range = 2007-6908 ha) for 5 females. Vegetation plots were sampled at 20 locations determined by radio-tracking (used) and 20 locations randomly identified (available) in each of 9 goshawk home ranges. Two variables were sampled within 30-m radius habitat plots, average dbh and canopy closure. These variables were combined to classify the plot into 1 of 5 classes. Goshawks used habitats within their home ranges non-randomly. Analyses of individual goshawk habitat selection were not conclusive, but trends in individual habitat selection was used to examine pooled analysis results. Goshawks avoided open habitats (meadows, seedling and sapling stands) and individual trends supported pooled analysis results. Goshawks did not avoid or select pole habitat stands, and individual trends supported these results. Goshawks avoided open-canopied, small sawtimber and mature stands (26-52+ cm dbh, canopy closure < 40%), but trends in individual goshawk selection were inconsistent. Stands of closed-canopied, small sawtimber (26-51 cm dbh, canopy closure [greater than or equal to] 40%), the most abundant habitat type within goshawk home ranges was not selected or avoided by goshawks, and individual trends agree with pooled results. Goshawks selected closed-canopied stands of mature and old-growth habitat ([greater than or equal to] 52 cm dbh, canopy closure [greater than or equal to] 40%), and trends in individual goshawk selection generally agreed with pooled results. Management recommendations are not meant to be extrapolated beyond the limitations of my study, but in the absence of other information this data can be used in developing interim recommendations and can help focus future research efforts. An effort was made to classify subjects according to the rhythmic trends identified with 'morning' and 'evening' type persons. Eight physically active male students of Oregon State University between the ages of 18 and 27 volunteered to serve as subjects. Four 'morning' and four 'evening' efficient types comprised the two test groups. Diurnal orientation was determined using questions designed to detect physiological and psychological orientation to the two extremes of day. Treatments consisted of three different jogging routines of six days each. Exercise bouts were submaximal, lasting 15-30 minutes. The first six day period all subjects ran at their customary time, establishing a baseline for subsequent comparisons. The two following weeks subjects were scheduled for periods of 0630 and 1830 running, in random order. During all three treatment periods, visual and auditory reaction time and temperature were measured. Testing was accomplished on a rotating schedule of two and three-a-day visits at 0800, 1400 and 2000, or 1100 and 1700 hours. In this manner, the testing procedure was replicated three times, at 48 hour intervals for all individuals, over all treatment periods. Two way analysis of variance was employed to determine effects of subject type and jogging schedule upon reaction time and temperature. The diurnal patterns that manifested themselves between 0800 and 2000 were analyzed by means of a triple classification ANOVA of trend components. The .05 level of confidence was the basis for rejection or acceptance of each hypothesis tested. The results of the study indicated that: a) no significant difference of reaction time or temperature existed between evening and morning types, or between jogging regimes or interaction of those two variables; b) no significant differences existed between trends for subject types; however, c) reaction time and temperature variation over the day exhibited a rhythmic trend and; d) significant difference of trend between treatments was found. Quantitatively neither exercise scheduling nor subject type affect the body's mean response as measured by reaction time and temperature. The results of the study indicated that: a) no significant difference of reaction time or temperature existed between evening and morning types, or between jogging regimes or interaction of those two variables; b) no significant differences existed between trends for subject types; however, c) reaction time and temperature variation over the day exhibited a rhythmic trend and; d) significant difference of trend between treatments was found. Quantitatively neither exercise scheduling nor subject type affect the body's mean response as measured by reaction time and temperature. The curves of morning and evening persons were not significantly different. However, when compared with the control week, trends associated with evening and morning runs reflected phase purturbation indicative that the time of day one exercises can affect the synchrony of psychomotor performance and body temperature. In recognition of the importance of spatio-temporally explicit information for assessing the effects of socio-environmental change and conservation strategy implementation, I developed a rigorous assessment of vegetation change using MODIS and Landsat time-series data and the Breaks For Additive Season and Trend (BFAST) algorithm to identify the timing, trends, and locations of change as well the associated drivers. First, I measured long-term vegetation trends from 2001-2015 using a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-based 250m resolution Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC) time-series, and mapped short-term disturbances using all available Landsat images (149 dates from Landsat 5, 7, and 8). I also identified a 12,500 ha area within Picachos (4% of the park’s total area) that experienced a consecutive vegetative decline or browning during every year of study, a result corroborated with a BFAST Monitor assessment using finer 30m resolution Landsat data. With Landsat, I recorded 12,642 ha (±1440) of disturbed forest within the park at high spatial and temporal accuracy. Spatially, Landsat results had user’s and producer’s accuracies of 0.95±0.02 and 0.83±0.18, respectively. Temporally, a TimeSync-supported temporal validation assessment showed that 75% of Landsat-detected dates of disturbance events were accurate within ± 6 months. With disturbances identified, I characterized disturbances within Picachos’ southeastern foothills and associated drivers using a set of metrics related to the spectral, pattern and trend properties of disturbance patches derived from Landsat time-series data (1996-2015). A training dataset was initially developed to identify drivers of disturbances using Corine Land Cover maps and high-resolution imagery. A Random Forests classifier was used to attribute disturbances to specific drivers of forest cover change: conversion to pasture, conversion to subsistence agriculture, and non-stand replacing disturbance (i.e., thinning). Attribution of changes had high accuracy at patch and area levels with 1-5% commission and 2-14% omission errors, respectively, for regions that were converted to pasture or experienced thinning. Lower agreement was found for agricultural conversion with 43% omission and 9% commission errors. I found that conversion to pasture is the main cause of forest cover loss within Picachos at 9901 ha (±72) corresponding to 14.7% of Picachos’ foothills, and that subtle forest alteration contributed to 1327 ha (±92) of forest degradation. Based upon a hemipelagic sedimentation rate of 1.7 cm/1000 yr, the age of uplift of the ridge is dated at less than 10,000 yrs. B.P. An apparent fracture zone trending N45E enters the area from the southwest. Two turbidite basins (B1 and B2) trending N9E occur northeast of this fracture zone. The results obtained from the analysis of these data indicated, in most instances, what the present practices and beliefs of home economics educators were but the responses to the trends and beliefs of these educators regarding what they thought should be done if there were no limiting factors was poor, so any statements concerning trends had to be of a general nature. The facilities and equipment which were available a majority of the time to the home economics education teachers and students included projectors, resource materials and subject-matter files, and the seminar-library room. The respondents desired more access to the instructional materials center, multipurpose laboratory, seminar-library room and the opaque and overhead projectors. A similar group of assignments were believed desirable and were required by the 111 respondents. These included the development of plans, evaluative and illustrative materials and the study of guides, journals, resource materials, textbooks and topics of special interest to the students. Content believed desirable and included by the teacher educators were similar. This content included philosophy, trends, curriculum, evaluation, understanding and working with students, management of and interpreting the department, teaching of special areas and professional obligations. The instructional materials the respondents used and taught students to use included bulletin boards, charts, chalk boards, exhibits, films and filmstrips, flannel boards and posters. It is underlain chiefly by Precambrian rocks, partially covered on the east by glacial debris and overlapped on the west and south by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The Precambrian rocks include a group of metasedimentary rocks of an undetermined age greater than 1700 m.y. The metasedimentary rocks include five mineralogically distinct units, quartzite, quartz-muscovite schist, quartz-epidote schist, quartz-plagioclase-biotite schist, and quartz-biotite-microcline-sillimanite schist. The higher grade sillimanite-bearing biotite schists are restricted to the western half of the map area and closely associated with the Forest Hill granitic rocks. The metasedimentary rocks were intruded twice during Precambrian time. The oldest intrusive event resulted in syntectonic emplacement of granodiorite and biotite tonalite rocks. These rocks correlate with the 1700 m.y. old Denny Creek granodiorite gneiss and Kroenke granodiorite which are mapped and informally named in the adjoining Mount Harvard quadrangle. The second, post-tectonic, igneous event produced granitic rocks that are dated at 1030 m.y. by Rb-Sr methods. These rocks include two comagmatic granitic phases, the Forest Hill porphyritic granite and the Forest Hill cataclastic granite. A third phase, the Forest Hill hornblende granodiorite, intrudes the porphyritic granite and, therefore, is younger than the granitic phases. The 1030 m.y. age is very significant because the only other 1000 m.y. old intrusive rocks in Colorado (the Pikes Peak batholith) are restricted to the Front Range. Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are exposed along the western and southern margins of the map area. They range in age from Cambrian through Permian. Tertiary igneous rocks, occurring as plugs, dikes and flows, crop out locally. Approximately 90 mi2 (230 km2) were mapped (scale 1/24,000) and four new K-Ar ages and 151 major element analyses were obtained in a study of the stratigraphic and magmatic transition from the Miocene - Pliocene Deschutes Formation on the east to the Pliocene - Pleistocene High Cascades on the west. Deschutes strata in the Whitewater River area overlie late Miocene (8-11+ m.y.) andesites, dacites, and rhyodacites along an erosional unconformity. The oldest Deschutes rocks exposed in the Whitewater River area are approximately 6 m.y. old, and the youngest are probably between 4.5 and 5 m.y. old. The oldest High Cascade rocks exposed in the Whitewater River area are approximately 4.3 m.y. old. There is no evidence for a hiatus in volcanic activity between Deschutes and High Cascade time in the Whitewater River area. Late Pleistocene explosive volcanism, probably free Mt. Jefferson, is evidenced in a hornblende rhyodacite pyroclastic-flow deposit which occurs within the glacial stratigraphy and is tentatively thought to be between approximately 60,000 and 20,000 years old. Deschutes strata are dominated by pyroclastic lithologies (mostly ash-flow tuffs) with some lava flows and minor epiclastic sediment. Compositions range mostly between basaltic andesite and dacite. Many Deschutes-age rocks are aphyric, high in Fed, TiO2, and alkalies, and low in MgO, CaO, and A12O3. They define a tholeiitic trend extending at least from basaltic andesite to dacite that can largely be derived through fractional crystallization of plagioclase, olivine, magnetite, and clinopyroxene from a parent magma, probably of basaltic composition. These rocks are compositionally similar to "tholeiitic anorogenic andesites" that are most commonly associated with areas of crustal extension. Rocks of High Cascade age in the Whitewater River area are mostly lava flaws that range in composition from basalt (high-alumina, olivine tholeiite) to rhyodacite. The High Cascade suite forms a calc-alkalic association that is typical of subduction-related magmatic arcs. Fractional crystallization of the basalts leads to iron-enrichment. Fractional crystallization of the basaltic andesites might lead to calc-alkalic compositions, but the mineral phases necessary to deplete the magmas in FeO, TiO2, and CaO (magnetite and clinopyroxene) are not common phenocryst phases in the basaltic andesites or andesites. Two northwest-trending, down-to-the-west normal faults with sane possible strike-slip motion have been mapped in the upper Whitewater River area, directly west of Lion's Head. Motion on these faults occurred after approximately 4 m.y. ago, but probably began prior to that time. There is between 200 and 400 ft (60-120 m) of apparent vertical separation on the western side of these faults. There may be a large, northwest-trending fault running from the south end of Green Ridge, through Bald Peter and the Whitewater River area, but this structure is largely buried by younger volcanic rocks. There is no evidence for a northern extension of the north-trending Green Ridge faults, and there is no evidence for large structural displacement in the lower Whitewater River along north- or northwest-trending structures. The Deschutes Formation - High Cascade transition in the Whitewater River area is marked by a switch in the eruptive style and in the dominant magmatic compositions during Deschutes and High Cascade times. Volcanism in the Whitewater River area does not appear to have been episodic with respect to volume and/or intensity; rather, the character of magmatism has varied with time and with the tectonic style through the period immediately prior to and following the formation of the High cascade graben. Jefferson in the Cascades of central Oregon. Approximately 90 mi2 (230 km2) were mapped (scale 1/24,000) and four new K-Ar ages and 151 major element analyses were obtained in a study of the stratigraphic and magmatic transition from the Miocene - Pliocene Deschutes Formation on the east to the Pliocene - Pleistocene High Cascades on the west. Deschutes strata in the Whitewater River area overlie late Miocene (8-11+ m.y.) andesites, dacites, and rhyodacites along an erosional unconformity. The oldest Deschutes rocks exposed in the Whitewater River area are approximately 6 m.y. old, and the youngest are probably between 4.5 and 5 m.y. old.
