In this paper we present an in-depth empirical study about the motivations developers have for examining software history, the strategies they use, and the challenges they encounter. To learn these, we interviewed 14 experienced developers from industry, and then extended our findings by surveying 217 developers. We found that history does not begin with the latest commit but with uncommitted changes. Moreover, we found that developers had different motivations for examining recent and old history. Based on these findings we propose 3-LENS HISTORY, a novel unified model for reasoning about software history. In the model, hypothetical populations were composed of five different life histories, which were genetically determined. Each life history type had its own rate of survival and reproduction that varied with changing environment and population density. In nonselective harvesting, life history types were equally vulnerable to harvest. In selective harvesting some life history types, were more intensively harvested than others. Population life history composition changed continuously in response to both changing environmental conditions and harvesting. Changes in life history composition were closely related to changes in numerical population performances such as density and yield. In general, selective harvesting of the simulated populations reduced mean and terminal abundance, total catch, and life history diversity. Nonselective harvesting tended to eliminate individuals evenly from the life history distribution so that the life history diversity was not greatly influenced. Selective harvesting tended to severely reduce or eliminate the life history types that were more intensively harvested. This generally resulted in extreme reduction of life history diversity. Variation in abundance, as measured by the absolute value of the residuals, was consistently larger in selectively harvested populations. Increased variation was probably related to reduction in life history diversity. Perhaps the most potentially alarming impact was the dramatic increase in incidences of extinction of selectively harvested populations at the highest exploitation rate. High selective harvest rate led to severe reduction in life history diversity which diminished the population's ability to persist in a changing environment. Furthermore, the extreme reduction of life history diversity made it difficult for populations that were able to persist to recover in abundance after termination of harvest. It is important to note, however, that the above conclusions are general outcomes based on 20 different environmental regimes. The results from a few individual regimes were not in accordance with some of the general outcomes, illustrating simply that particular results are highly contingent on the particular environmental pattern. St. Augustine was an influential member of the early Christian Church, establishing many doctrines of the Christian faith. One of his most significant contributions to Christianity was a Christian philosophy of history. Augustine defined the purpose of history as God providing salvation to humanity after the fall of Adam. This salvation is achieved through a conflict between two cities of people, the earthly city and the City of God, which are defined by two separate loves. The earthly citizens love themselves more than God, while the citizens in the City of God love God more than themselves. Salvation is ultimately provided to the predestined citizens of the City of God in the final judgment, while citizens of the earthly city are damned to eternal punishment in a pit of fire. This philosophy of history broke with the classical tradition history, which believed that history was cyclic, repeating continuously for all eternity. Augustine defined history as having a distinct beginning and end, through which God worked to provide salvation to humanity. Pacific Coast estuaries provide important rearing habitats leading to improved growth and survival for juvenile chinook salmon. However, research has suggested that juvenile salmon have little use for estuarine habitats in the Columbia River. To further understand salmonid recovery needs in estuaries, I compared historical and contemporary life history patterns in the estuary to determine if there has been a change in the importance of the Columbia River estuary to juvenile chinook salmon. Historical data sources provided evidence of diverse estuarine life history strategies for juvenile chinook salmon (retrieved from fish surveys and scale analysis), including differences in time of estuarine entry, growth, and residency. In contrast, contemporary estuarine salmon populations, which are dominated by hatchery-reared juveniles, had highly uniform life-history characteristics; most fish entered the estuary at similar times and sizes and remained for short time periods. Pacific Coast estuaries provide important rearing habitats leading to improved growth and survival for juvenile chinook salmon. However, research has suggested that juvenile salmon have little use for estuarine habitats in the Columbia River. To further understand salmonid recovery needs in estuaries, I compared historical and contemporary life history patterns in the estuary to determine if there has been a change in the importance of the Columbia River estuary to juvenile chinook salmon. Historical data sources provided evidence of diverse estuarine life history strategies for juvenile chinook salmon (retrieved from fish surveys and scale analysis), including differences in time of estuarine entry, growth, and residency. In contrast, contemporary estuarine salmon populations, which are dominated by hatchery-reared juveniles, had highly uniform life-history characteristics; most fish entered the estuary at similar times and sizes and remained for short time periods. Following the history, I analyze women’s roles within sending communities. Objective--Identify patient history intake questions common to four fields of medicine - allopathic, naturopathic, chiropractic and Traditional Chinese Medicine to be included in an Integrated Patient History Intake Tool. Background--The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is on the rise in the United States. 80% of those who used CAM therapies in 1990 did so in conjunction with allopathic medicine, and 70% of those who used CAM therapies did not tell their conventional practitioner. Lack of awareness of patients' use of CAM therapies may hinder practitioners' ability to provide adequate healthcare. Methods--A three-round modified Delphi technique was utilized to generate consensus among 106 Oregon health care practitioners on the importance of specific patient history intake questions. A panel of faculty members from Oregon Health and Sciences University, the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, and Western States Chiropractic College identified 321 patient history intake questions, which then were distributed to the Oregon healthcare practitioners. The healthcare practitioners were asked to rate the importance of each question through a series of two surveys over the period of eleven weeks. Suggestions for additional intake questions also were invited. Results--The Delphi process narrowed the 321 initial questions plus 150 additional suggested questions down to a list of 52 intake questions to be included in the Integrated Patient History Intake Tool. There was an overall response rate of 47% with a 64% response rate to SURVEY I, and a 74% response rate for SURVEY II. Discussion--The patient history intake questions have been identified for use in an Integrated Patient History Intake tool. This Delphi study illustrated the differences that are held unique for each paradigm of medicine. Determining unique characteristics of complementary and alternative medicine from allopathic medicine is an important aspect of building collaboration among allopathic and CAM providers within the state of Oregon. The proposed model of an integrated patient history intake form provides a platform from which to build further cooperation and awareness. Title: Development of an integrated patient history intake tool : a Delphi study Author: Lindahl, Michaela G. Objective--Identify patient history intake questions common to four fields of medicine - allopathic, naturopathic, chiropractic and Traditional Chinese Medicine to be included in an Integrated Patient History Intake Tool. Background--The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is on the rise in the United States. 80% of those who used CAM therapies in 1990 did so in conjunction with allopathic medicine, and 70% of those who used CAM therapies did not tell their conventional practitioner. Lack of awareness of patients' use of CAM therapies may hinder practitioners' ability to provide adequate healthcare. Methods--A three-round modified Delphi technique was utilized to generate consensus among 106 Oregon health care practitioners on the importance of specific patient history intake questions. A panel of faculty members from Oregon Health and Sciences University, the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, and Western States Chiropractic College identified 321 patient history intake questions, which then were distributed to the Oregon healthcare practitioners. The healthcare practitioners were asked to rate the importance of each question through a series of two surveys over the period of eleven weeks. Suggestions for additional intake questions also were invited. Results--The Delphi process narrowed the 321 initial questions plus 150 additional suggested questions down to a list of 52 intake questions to be included in the Integrated Patient History Intake Tool. There was an overall response rate of 47% with a 64% response rate to SURVEY I, and a 74% response rate for SURVEY II. Discussion--The patient history intake questions have been identified for use in an Integrated Patient History Intake tool. This Delphi study illustrated the differences that are held unique for each paradigm of medicine. A notable gap in our knowledge, however, remains regarding the mysterious disease known only as “sweating sickness” or sudor anglicus. This dissertation addresses and evaluates this disease from the perspective of the history of science, and in doing so, it makes three key arguments. First, this project examines how the early modern science and medicine known and practiced by Tudor subjects influenced their perceptions of this new disease, leaving them in a mostly helpless position from which to combat it and indeed often wondering if the unknown illness might represent a divine judgment, especially in the form of questioning a dubious claim to monarchy made by the first Tudor ruler, Henry VII. Second, the dissertation offers a detailed and layered thesis concluding that the disease was ultimately caused by an earlier version of the louping-ill virus, or LIV, a virus and accompanying illness which continued to affect parts of Western Europe, with its own unique strain still extant within Britain. In the study presented here, comprehensive conceptual perspective was used in a multivariate study of life history and evolutionary adaptation of 10 striped bass populations representing the full geographic and ecologic diversity of striped bass. The colonization trajectory of populations originating from a small colonizing population from the Hudson River demonstrated how striped bass adapted in varying degrees of success in their reproduction, development, behavior, survival, and trophics to a range of western North American habitats. Habitats that were marginal through infrequent suitability for successful reproduction or survival of early life stages, or through limiting longevity, resulted in life history tactics that consisted of tradeoffs between life history traits, especially reproduction and development. Fishery management effects (exploitation and stocking) and habitat effects (water temperatures, freshwater inflows, forage and pollutants) influenced life history and evolutionary adaptive capacities of all populations. Highly variable and indeterminate environments also affected these capacities and related to year-class dominance. This helped to explain declines in five of the study's populations. The 158-year-old Commanding Officer's House at Fort Hoskins is one of only two such structures in Oregon representing the pre-Civil War era on the Western Frontier. From 1856-1861, it embodies a link in history between the prevailing ideology of western expansion and replication of Eastern cultural values into the frontier landscape during the first half of the nineteenth century. The study focuses on the domestic household of Captain Christopher C. Augur, a West Point elite officer who later became a Major General during the Civil War and a confidant of President Abraham Lincoln, and his wife, Jane Elizabeth Arnold, whose lineage permits her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution. The social history of the Eastern roots of high status officers is constructed through use of archaeological findings from previous years of excavation at the fort site. These artifacts form the basis of a material culture analysis that offers interpretation of the interior space from socio-cultural, design, and historical archaeology perspectives. The structure of the Commander's house, built under the direction of 2nd Lieut. Philip H. Sheridan is examined with a lens toward gendered space, class distinction, and material culture. Nineteenth century domestic interior spatial differentiation is explored in this study. Information gathered from extant materials, archival documents, archaeological data, and museum collections offer a view of the interior and a portrait of the elite military family who occupied it from 1856-1861. Oral family tradition is acquired through interviews with Captain Augur's great-grandson and other direct descendants. Recommendations for further study of this and other historic houses, with focus on the interior material culture, historic house restoration, and nineteenth century domestic space, are given.
