Aurora Colony was a communal group, headed by Dr. William Kiel, which emigrated from Bethel, Missouri to Oregon in 1857. This group did not differ much from other American pioneers except in their social philosophy. It was a socialist type group in which each person would share in the work of the community, and in turn the community would provide the individual with the basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter. The group was dissolved in 1877 after the death of Dr. Kiel. The group's political, economic and social structure influenced the clothing and household textiles which they created. All the available clothing, household textiles and the tools used in their creation which it was possible to locate were photographed. These pictures are included in the thesis. The results of the investigation show that the group's textiles such as quilts and samplers were similar to those of other American pioneers. Nature was the chief source of design for their stitchery, and the most frequently used colors were blue, red, and green. Weaving, knitting and crocheting were the techniques used in fabric construction. Wool was the major locally produced fiber used by these colonists. There was little elaborate ornamentation in either wearing apparel or household textiles. The Aurora group did not develop any new techniques in the field of textile arts. They used techniques similar to those used by other American colonists. The objectives were to identify the following aspects of dry season vegetable production for overall women farmers and farmers in male- and female-headed households: (1) awareness of sources, (2) sources used, (3) primary sources, (4) preferred sources, and (5) technical knowledge base and knowledge needs. A multistage cluster sampling technique was used to select a sample of 200. The data were collected by personal interview using a structured questionnaire translated into local language. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Family members was the source of information most women farmers in the total sample as well as in the male- and female-headed households were aware of, used, and preferred; friends was next. Family members was the most frequently used information source. The majority of women farmers in the total sample as well as in the male- and female-headed households did not have technical knowledge. Most respondents expressed a need for knowledge in almost all the selected technological areas for the commonly grown dry season vegetables and some exotic ones. However, there were more women farmers in male-headed households than female-headed households who needed knowledge in certain technological areas: (a) manure type and rate of application; time of fertilizer application; vegetable crop rotation; garden fence construction; and (b) varieties; planting methods; fertilizer types; insect and disease knowledge for Indian mustard and onion. The percentage differences were statistically significant. The fact that women farmers have a low level of technical knowledge suggests that their primary information sources also may have a low level of technical knowledge.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Role of Shrimp Farming in Generating Employment and income: A Study of Small- Scale Shrimp Farming in West Bengal, India Author: Bhattacharya, Poulomi In the light of the usual allegation against shrimp farming as an employment displacing activity, this paper tries to examine the role of shrimp farming in generation of employment and income for small scale shrimp farmers in West Bengal, India using primary data collected from 208 traditional and scientific shrimp farmers in West Bengal. The analysis reveals that the labour used (including family labour) for traditional and scientific shrimp farming were 101 mandays per acre and 300 mandays per acre respectively. Both the figures were more than the labour requirement for paddy cultivation in West Bengal. The finding refutes the allegation against shrimp farming as an employment displacing activity as compared paddy cultivation. A comparison of the household income of sample shrimp farmers with the rural poverty line in West Bengal revealed that shrimp farmers of all the categories (small, medium and large) were above the poverty line. However, per capita annual household income of marginal traditional shrimp farmers was quite close to the poverty line which emphasizes the need for pondering special extension facilities to these shrimp farmers. The study also shows that on the whole shrimp farming accounted for about 70% of the annual household income of the sample households. However the importance of shrimp farming was lesser in the case of shrimp farmers with lesser shrimp farm size. This indicates the quest of marginal and small shrimp farmers to diversify their source of income in order to cover the risk associated with shrimp culture. On the whole shrimp farming was proved to be an employment generating activity and had contributed significantly to the income of the sample households. Two components of the socio-economic impact have been prioritized: the fishing unit profitability and the fishery household income distribution by comparing a marine protected area (Mu Ko Chumpon National Park) and an unprotected area (Chumphon Province) in Thailand. One can distinguish three phases: a bibliographical analysis, the carrying out of fishers village monographs and of a sample-based survey of fishery households. The sampling unit was the fishery household forming one or several fishing units defined by a métier (an association of a fleet, a main fishing gear, target species): 126 households forming 225 fishing units have been surveyed. The positive impact of the MPA on fishery profitability is shown by a principal component analysis which indicates that there is a lower proportion of fishing units harvesting inside or in adjacent areas of the MPA (insiders who are benefitting from implicit access rights) which face negative profit than those fishing remote from the MPA but in Chumphon Province (outsiders). This positive impact is confirmed by the performance of Chi-square tests: the insiders have relatively higher profit per fishing day than outsiders and Chi-square tests show a greater homogeneity of profits per fishing day and a lower variability for the insiders. A steady social impact from the MPA on fishery income distribution is revealed by the measure of concentration using an Herfindhal index and Lorenz curves which show the more egalitarian structure of insiders regarding the operating profit and the income per fishery household. A solid waste generation study compared the daily per capita solid waste generated over one week by 25 Indian households, 15 Adult non-Indian households and 15 Family- Adult non-Indian households on the district. An analysis of variance showed that the differences in daily per capita solid waste generation among the three groups were not statistically significant at the .05 level, and a t-test showed that differences between the Indian residents and the non-Indian residents considered as one group were not statistically significant at the .05 level. The overall daily per capita solid waste generated by all groups, 1.71 lbs/day, was less than half of the national average of 3.5 lbs/day. The Adult non-Indian households had the highest daily per capita solid waste generation (1.96 lbs), while the Indian and the Family-Adult non-Indian households generated a similar amount of solid waste daily per person (1.67 and 1.64 lbs respectively). Four alternative solid waste management proposals were developed: (1) a tribal-operated solid waste management and disposal service serving all residents and most organizations on the San Xavier district and trucking solid wastes off the reservation; (2) the same as Alternative One except that disposal would be in an 8.24 acre landfill to be constructed by the tribe on the district; (3) contracting waste pickup and disposal to an outside waste management company; and (4) the same as Alternative One except that commercial organizations on the district would not be served. Evaluation of the four proposals showed that Alternative One best fulfilled the objectives of the san Xavier District Tribal Council, and that alternative was chosen for recommendation to the San Xavier District Tribal Council. It was also recommended that a recycling proposal by U.S. Recycling Industries be accepted.
