Material for this experiment consisted of 7 trees randomly selected from each of two thinning/fertilization treatments and a control (unthinned and not fertilized) stand. Thus a total of 21 trees were involved. The trees were cut in the summer of 1982. Static bending tests were done on juvenile and mature wood from trees of all plots at the butt and at a height of 18 feet. Specific gravity and fiber length were also determined. The intra-ring parameters (earlywood width, latewood width, ring width, earlywood density, latewood density, ring density, minimum earlywood density, maximum latewood density, density range and percentage latewood) were determined by X-ray studies. Statistical analyses showed significant differences between treatments (thinning, or thinning/fertilization) in modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, fiber lengths and all the intra-ring parameters. Overall average specific gravity did not differ significantly among treatments but did between butt and top (18-foot height) wood values. Ring width and ring density seemed most influential on mechanical properties. Average modulus of elasticity for the samples tested were 10.6% (for the thinning/fertilization experiment) and 17.3% (for the thinning experiment) less than comparable values in the control plot. Average modulus of rupture for the samples tested were 6.3% (for the thinning/fertilization experiment) and 12.4% (for the thinning experiment) less than comparable values in the control plot. Age seemed to have the most influence on fiber length. Thinning treatments within the tree age-range of juvenile wood affected intra-ring parameters less than did such treatments in the age-range of mature wood. Fertilization by itself did not significantly increase tree growth (annual ring width). Consumer panel analysis of the cheese on a hedonic scale over seven months aging showed no significant differences in overall desirability between cheese containing 1.75 - 0.88% NaCl. At 0.75% NaCl in cheese, ratings were lower, but flavor and texture scores were considered acceptable. Addition of even a small amount of salt (0.38 - 0.44%) significantly improved sensory characteristics relative to an unsalted cheese. Regression analysis of trained panel evaluations to predict consumer response showed that "firmness" and "adhesiveness" were the most important attributes for favorable consumer ratings of texture. Trained panel determination of "Cheddar intensity" and "unpleasant aftertaste" were found to be the two most important factors for determining consumer panel flavor scores. These four attributes, as rated by the trained panel, correlated with salt concentration in cheese. Instron evaluation of reduced sodium Cheddar cheese showed a decrease in firmness, chewiness, and gumminess and an increase in determinations showed an increase in proteolysis and water activity and a decrease in pH of the finished cheese. The first part of the study was concerned with the separation of sarcoplasmic proteins extracted at different times of post-mortem aging. Electrophoresis of the sarcoplasmic extracts by the discontinuous technique, using ten percent acrylamide gels, resulted in the separation of 18 (possibly 20) electrophoretically different proteins. Differences between electrophoretic patterns of sarcoplasmic proteins as post-mortem aging proceeded were slight. Heterogeneity of sarcoplasmic protein fractions obtained by DEAE-cellulose chromatography was investigated by vertical acrylamide gel electrophoresis in the second part of this study. Electrophoretic analyses of the sarcoplasmic fractions from the above separations indicated that the major peaks of the chromatographic profiles were quite heterogeneous. Fraction Areas I and IV, which appeared as single homogeneous chromatographic peaks, showed five and six distinct bands, respectively, when subjected to gel electrophoresis. Once again changes in the electrophoretic patterns at 0 and 10 days of post-mortem aging were slight with main differences being in the density of the bands. The versatility and high resolving power of acrylamide gel electrophoresis for separating sarcoplasmic proteins was demonstrated. Snake pricklebacks feed on algae (mainly genus Enteromorpha), on polychaeta (mainly genus Neoamphitrite), on crustacea (mainly harpacticoida), and other bottomdwelling organisms. They were non-selective in feeding. Based on gonado-somatic indices and egg diameter, I found that snake pricklebacks probably spawn near the end of fall and during winter. Fecundity was positively correlated with standard length of the fish and had a correlation coefficient of 0.85. The number of eggs per fish varied from 2,277 to 6,100 with a mean fecundity of 4,089 eggs. Otoliths are more useful than scales for determining the age of the snake pricklebacks. There is agreement between ages as established by the length-frequency method and those established by the otolith method only until age two. The length-weight relationship was described by the model Ln W = Ln a + b Ln L. The value of the constant "b" was lower than 3.0 for both males and females and varied from 2.33 to 2.78. Females showed a larger constant "b" than males during both years of sampling. Length and weight was correlated for males and females and for sexes combined with "r" values ranging from 0.94 to 0.98. More specifically the study focused on the impact of the college environment on married students. The students who participated in the study were Oregon State University sophomores, juniors, and seniors. They were 21 through 24 years of age. A total of 370 married and single students was selected for the study. These Oregon State University students provided the source of the information for this study on attitudes. Biographical and attitudinal information about the students was collected through use of the College Student Questionnaire Part II developed by Richard E. Peterson (1968) for Educational Testing Service. The data used in the three hypotheses were collected fall term 1974. Two types of statistical methods were used to analyze the three hypotheses; the analysis of variance model and the linear regression model. The results of the study indicate that: 1. There are differences in attitudes between male and female students, 21 through 24 years of age for the attitudinal variables: family independence, social conscience, and cultural sophistication. 2. Married students' attitudes are different from single students' for the attitudinal variables: satisfaction with the faculty, study habits, extracurricular involvement, family independence, peer independence, liberalism, and satisfaction with major. 3. Males and females have similar attitudes for: satisfaction with the faculty, satisfaction with the administration, satisfaction with students, study habits, extracurricular involvement, peer independence, and liberalism. 4. Differential phosphorylative efficiency, an average P/O ratio of 3.03 of the new material compared to 1.44 of the old, was obtained when all the co-factors and substrate were provided. No difference in oxygen consumption of both materials was observed. In an attempt to delineate some of the changes that took place in the mitochondria of naturally aged soybean seed, the effects of serum albumin, naF, and 2, 4-dinitrophenol as well as the permeability of mitochondria membranes under different sucrose osmotic concentrations were examined. The highest P/O ratios of mitochondria from new and old materials were obtained in the presence of serum albumin. The effect of albumin was mainly in increasing phosphorylation with no change in oxygen uptake. The addition of 0.013M NaF per flask produced no change in oxygen consumption and phosphorylation on cashed mitochondria of both materials. However, the same concentration of NaF did improve the PIO ratio in the unwashed mitochondria in a preliminary experiment of the embryo axes of the new material. 2, 4-dinitrophenol used at the concentration of 0.001M per flask reduced slightly the oxygen uptake of the old but had no effect on that of the new material. The PIO ratios of both materials were reduced practically to the same level; namely, to 1.09 and 0.95 in the new and old, respectively. The conductivity of the leachate from the old material, based on any known quantity of mitochondria, was always higher than that of the new in 0.25M, 0.50M and 0.75M sucrose concentrations. Maximum difference in conductivity measured in μ mhos between the new and old was obtained in the 0.5M osmotic concentration. The experimental results indicate that mitochondrial phosphorylative efficiency of old but germinative soybeans are reduced to 48 percent of the new. This reduction is not because of higher content of adenosine triphosphatase in old material, but because of degradation in the integrity of mitochondrial membrane. The study examined the involvement of children in artisanal fisheries in Ondo State, Nigeria. Simple random sampling procedure was used to select 90 children aged 9-18 years who were involved in artisanal fishing activities. Descriptive statistics were used to present the data gathered for the study. Pearson Product Moment Correlation and the Chi-Square analysis were used to test the study hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. Respondents were mostly males (70%) with mean age of 15 ± 2 years. Fishing experience for two-thirds was over 7 years. Major economic activities engaged in by children were fishing (100.0%) and fish marketing (97.8%). All respondents fished more on rivers, lakes, creeks and canals with friends mostly in the mornings (70.0%) between 4-5am (43.3%). Mean daily catch per caput per day amounted in monetary terms to N317. Income increased significantly with age of children (r = 0.27, p< 0.05). Respondents’ major constraint was lack of capital to purchase nets and boats of their own (97.8%). Sustainable involvement of children in artisanal fisheries can help alleviate poverty as the children remitted their incomes to their parents for food, school fees or other school needs. Children’s capacity for production can be boosted through capacity building and greater access to fishing equipment and capital assets used in fishing. Scholarship programmes should be put in place to encourage children who do well at both school and fishing to further develop the quality of future manpower available for fishing in the coastal areas.
