Townsend's mole, Scapanus townsendii (Bachman), was studied by live trapping, dead trapping, and observation from July 1961, to July 1963, in Tillamook County, Oregon. This study was initiated at the request of Tillamook County farmers to determine biological facts that would assist them in their efforts to control this small burrowing mammal. The mole's diet consists of 72 percent earthworms and 28 percent roots. Seventy-nine percent of the stomachs examined contained from 200 to 4,000 milligrams of earthworms. One stomach contained 100 percent slugs and six stomachs contained traces of insect skeleton. Eighteen percent of the stomachs examined contained "rootballs." Townsend's mole mates during February and March and the young are born during March and April. The average litter size is three, though litters of two are common. Prenatal litter size compares closely with nest litter size. Young moles weigh approximately five grams at birth and develop to sub-adult weight of 80 grams, ± five grams, in about 30 days, at which time they leave the nest. Adult males averaged 141.65 grams in weight and adult females 119.03 grams. Forty-three nests containing young were located and examined. Three general forms of nest mounds were found. These were the fence post mound, the large single mound, and the aggregate mound. Primary predators of this mole are domestic dogs and cats. Juvenile moles are killed by cattle stepping on the nests and sub-adults are killed by cars on roads during dispersal. Two similar fields, differing in amount of fertilizer applied, were dead trapped to compare mole numbers. The smaller field, which received twice as much manure as the larger, produced 72 moles or 4.8 per acre. The larger field produced 52 moles or 2.6 per acre. Four species of fleas, a single species of ticks, and mites of the suborder Mesostigmata were found on the Townsend mole.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Relationships among weight status, dairy food consumption, food and physical activity behavior, and nutritional status parameters of preschoolers in Tillamook County, Oregon Author: Frank, Sandra K. The purpose of this cross-sectional population study was to provide an assessment of weight status of a county's preschool population utilizing the new growth charts and expressed as Body Mass Index, or BMI, -for- age percentile. This study was conducted in conjunction with an annual health screen for incoming kindergartners and consisted of two phases. The first phase involved assisting in the collection of, and statistically analyzing preschoolers' data collected during the Tillamook Health Screen on May 23-25th, 2001. Height, weight, blood pressure, hemoglobin, and blood lead levels were measured. Also, the preschoolers' parents completed a 24-hour food intake record and answered questions on mealtime habits. Phase Two consisted of a mailed questionnaire that was sent to parents of preschoolers who were screened in May, 2001, to investigate dairy food consumption, where meals are eaten, and physical activity habits of their preschoolers. Four significant findings were documented in this research. Foremost, Tillamook County preschoolers had a lower prevalence of healthy weight and a higher prevalence of at risk of overweight and overweight levels than children their age nationwide. Also, both systolic and diastolic blood pressure increased with increasing BMI-for-age percentiles for males and females. Third, hours spent viewing television—sedentary behavior—was positively related to BMI-for-age percentiles. The combination of more hours of physical activity with less television viewing time was inversely related to BMI-for-age percentiles. Last, Tillamook County preschoolers who were above the healthy weight range ate more Food Guide Pyramid servings of concentrated fats/sweets than children in the healthy weight range. Data that were not strong enough to reach conclusions about weight status related to dairy product consumption, fat content of dairy products, mealtime habits, meals eaten away from home, blood hemoglobin, and blood lead. Also, no significant associations were found between dairy food intake and blood hemoglobin, blood lead, or blood pressure. Even at preschool ages, physical activity and diet are important to assess when increasing rates of overweight levels and associated increases in blood pressure are being investigated. The Rural Clean Water Program (RCWP) was a 10 to 15 year experiment designed to control agricultural non-point source (NPS) in rural watersheds throughout the nation. The RCWP Tillamook Watershed Project in Tillamook County, Oregon promoted the installation of manure management facilities and nutrient management strategies to improve the water quality of Tillamook Bay. The goal of the project was to reduce the fecal coliform concentration by 70%. Since the Bay is used for oyster production, there has been extensive sampling of Tillamook Bay and its tributaries since 1960. Unfortunately, much of the tributary data were compiled for a variety of short-term projects and therefore, the area lacks a consistent strategy for data collection. This inconsistency coupled with the variability in the data has made it difficult to evaluate changes in the water quality. It is important to note that this analysis is not a prediction model. It is a statistical model using an analysis of variance (ANOVA). The term, model, will be used to describe the response of ANOVA. This model is the best representation of the trend given the limited useful data that was available. The 33 year "tributary" analysis of the Wilson River station (D412130) determined fecal coliform concentration reductions as high as 69.83, 62.67, 69.02 and 72.38% in the Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, respectively. There were 48.59, 36.41, 47.21 and 52.95% reductions during the RCWP years (1980-1992) that may be attributed to the BMP's. The BMP installation began in 1981 and continued through 1995, however, the majority of the BMP's installation began in 1983. These reductions are not at optimum levels because of three important factors. First of all, not all farms have been provided with fullest possible array of manure containment facilities. Secondly, even with full implementation, some fecal coliform bacteria may escape. Finally, the BMP's must be diligently operated and maintained to provide the most effective capture and die-off of fecal coliform bacteria. When the BMP's are correctly installed and well managed, they will provide the maximum manure containment protection for the streams.
