St. Augustine was an influential member of the early Christian Church, establishing many doctrines of the Christian faith. One of his most significant contributions to Christianity was a Christian philosophy of history. Augustine defined the purpose of history as God providing salvation to humanity after the fall of Adam. This salvation is achieved through a conflict between two cities of people, the earthly city and the City of God, which are defined by two separate loves. The earthly citizens love themselves more than God, while the citizens in the City of God love God more than themselves. Salvation is ultimately provided to the predestined citizens of the City of God in the final judgment, while citizens of the earthly city are damned to eternal punishment in a pit of fire. This philosophy of history broke with the classical tradition history, which believed that history was cyclic, repeating continuously for all eternity. Augustine defined history as having a distinct beginning and end, through which God worked to provide salvation to humanity. Pacific Coast estuaries provide important rearing habitats leading to improved growth and survival for juvenile chinook salmon. However, research has suggested that juvenile salmon have little use for estuarine habitats in the Columbia River. To further understand salmonid recovery needs in estuaries, I compared historical and contemporary life history patterns in the estuary to determine if there has been a change in the importance of the Columbia River estuary to juvenile chinook salmon. Historical data sources provided evidence of diverse estuarine life history strategies for juvenile chinook salmon (retrieved from fish surveys and scale analysis), including differences in time of estuarine entry, growth, and residency. In contrast, contemporary estuarine salmon populations, which are dominated by hatchery-reared juveniles, had highly uniform life-history characteristics; most fish entered the estuary at similar times and sizes and remained for short time periods. The inability to distinguish the origin of unmarked individuals precluded a separate life-history assessment for contemporary wild chinook juveniles. Nonetheless, the results suggest that life-history diversity has declined in response to anthropogenic pressures that directly affect salmonid populations: harvest, hatcheries, habitat loss, and hydropower dams. By exploring the play's references to conflicting interpretations of history from different generic perspectives, I hope to advance a more nuanced reading of the play's dynamic staging of history. In Chapter One, I suggest that Richard II complicates medieval and early modern conceptions of history by referencing the de casibus tradition alongside competing interpretations of history. Ultimately, I argue that the play presents a multi-faceted performance of history that evades stable meaning by drawing attention to the ways in which characters' interpretations shift as they tell and retell historical events from contrasting generic perspectives. In Chapter Two, I examine the mingling of comic and tragic elements in Richard II. Because early modern audiences and playwrights emphasized transitions, or rapid changes of emotion, I suggest that Richard II's mixed affect is not an aberration, but rather part of early modern attitudes toward passions and playgoing. Together, these chapters present a reading of Richard II that highlights how early modern notions of affect and playgoing can offer today's readers and playgoers a version of history that dramatizes the challenge of interpreting historical events. The classification is based on Iceland's substrate, climate, water, biota, and human cultural influences. The geological formations of Iceland are very different in character depending on their age and formation history. Three major types of formations occur: Tertiary, Plio-Pleistocene, and Pleistocene. These formations have different hydrological characters and different landscapes. There are also large differences in the climate within Iceland. Four major river types are found in Iceland: spring-fed rivers in Pleistocene areas, direct runoff rivers in Plio-Pleistocene areas, direct runoff rivers in Tertiary areas and wetland heath rivers in Tertiary areas. Eleven biogeoclimatic regions occur in Iceland, each having a different watershed type. The classification together with life history theory can explain the distributions, abundances, and life history strategies of Icelandic salmonids. Oceanic conditions must also be considered to explain the life history patterns of anadromous populations. When the freshwater and marine habitat is stable, the life history patterns of individuals in a population tend to be uniform, one life history form being most common. In an unstable environment many life history forms occur and the life span of one generation is long. The properties of the habitat can further explain which life history types are present. In the most stable and favorable rivers of Iceland resident life history forms are more common. Such a classification of a river habitat greatly aids the understanding of the habitat and how it enables and constrains the salmonid populations within it. Consequently adaptations in life histories are better understood and conservation, utilization, and management of these valuable natural resources are made more coherent and efficient.
