Our study was conducted in a 96 m reach of Oak Creek, OR – a small gravel bed stream in the Oregon Coast range. The study site is located in the same reach that was used to collect the historic Oak Creek bed load dataset of Milhous [1973]. To answer study question 1 we characterized the variability in sediment transport for a series of eight high flow events ranging from 0.64-3.4 m³/s using modeled shear stress (τ) from a field calibrated, high resolution (<0.1 m²) 2- dimensional hydrodynamic model (FaSTMECH) coupled with detailed measurements of the channel substrate. The stream bed was then categorized into regions of high and low disturbance based on potential mobility of the median grain size using a Shield’s stress approach. High resolution (<0.25m²), in-situ measurements benthic Chlorophyll-a (used as a metric of benthic algal production) were taken before and after high flow events in regions of contrasting disturbance to understand how benthic algal communities respond to sediment transport disturbance through both space and time. Growth factors including temperature, light, and nutrients were also measured. There was high spatial and temporal variability in both sediment transport and benthic Chl-a throughout the study period. We found significant differences (p<0.05) in benthic Chl-a concentrations between regions of high and low disturbance in half of the sampling events. The influence of sediment transport on benthic Chl-a was dependent on both the bed mobility and pre-disturbance Chl-a concentrations. There were also differences in benthic algal recovery rates in regions of contrasting disturbance following high flow events. The relationship between τ and Chl-a was highly variable, however the 95th percentile quantile regression of Chl-a was consistent with the bell-curve shape of the intermediate disturbance hypothesis for 10/18 sampling events. This study shows that sediment transport processes do influence benthic algal growth dynamics however the magnitude of that influence is also dependent on pre-disturbance productivity. To answer study question 2 we made contemporary bed load measurements during 5 flow events ranging from 0.24 bankfull (Q[subscript bf]) to 0.52 Q[subscript bf] using a Helly-Smith bed load sampler in order to confirm the stability of sediment transport dynamics in Oak Creek. The contemporary measurements were consistent with the historical dataset for total load however, they had a finer grain size distribution (GSD). A 2- dimensional (2-D) hydrodynamic model (FaSTMECH) was used to calculate spatial distributions of τ for 5 flow levels ranging from 0.2 Qbf to Qbf (0.64-3.4 m³/s). Results indicate that τ is highly variable within the study reach and that mean normalized τ distributions are remarkably similar between flow levels. The τ distributions were then discretized and used to calculate bed load using surface and subsurface transport equations, and compared against the historical dataset for accuracy. Modeled bed load was consistently larger and coarser than the historical samples. Areas of τ greater than 2 times the mean comprised <2.5% of the bed and were responsible for transporting >32% of the bed load. We hypothesize that the inconsistency in our estimates may be due to combining 2-D τ with a reach averaged reference shields stress (τr*) value which may have caused such high transport rates from a small portion of the bed. Scaling τr* with τ throughout a reach may provide the basis for future work to incorporate spatially variable τ into commonly used bed load transport functions. The procedures utilized varied according to the specific purposes of the study: (1) historical research provided the narrative for the descriptive analysis of the OSU Fourth Cycle; (2) mailed surveys for the followup of former OSU Fourth Cycle corps members in 1974 used questionnaires similar to those administered during the OSU - Jack V. Hall Fourth Cycle, and'29 of 32 (91 percent) of the former OSU Fourth Cycle corps members responded to the survey and form the population of the study; and (3) analysis of variance was computed on means of the scores of the MTAI which was administered to the OSU Fourth Cycle corps members in June and December 1969, April 1971, and April 1974. A summary of the findings from this study included; (1) both inadequate numbers of personnel trained and lack of financing once federal funds were withdrawn lessened the impact of the OSU Teacher Corps program; (2) the OSU Fourth Cycle was successful from the standpoint of subsequent success of its graduates, but did not achieve the ambiguous long-range program goals; (3) the followup in 1974 indicated $4 percent of former OSU Fourth Cycle corps members remained in education-related fields, primarily in poverty areas; (4) working with children provided most teaching satisfaction, while parent contacts continued as the most prevalent community involvement; (5) former OSU Fourth Cycle corps members considered program courses in psychology, internship, and reading as being of the most value; (6) results from an analysis of variance computed on the means of the MTAI indicated no significant difference as to change in OSU Fourth Cycle corps members' attitudes toward teaching occurred during or subsequent to the OSU Fourth Cycle; (7) in 1974, supervisors' mean rating of teaching effectiveness for former OSU Fourth Cycle corps members was 5.0 of a possible 6.0, greatest decline (1.2 points) from original Program ratings occurring in understanding cultural and economic differences; and (8) 93 percent of the former OSU Fourth Cycle corps members would repeat their Teacher Corps experience. Wolves occurred in unknown but seemingly low densities during the latter 1800s in several areas of Yellowstone where they were controlled periodically until 1926. Populations apparently began increasing about 1912, primarily in the northeast, and may have reached nonequilibrium levels of 30-40 animals (postwhelping). Intensive control 1914-26 removed at least 136 wolves, including about 80 pups. During this period Yellowstone wolves characteristically lived in packs of 3-16 members, some of which followed the ungulates in their seasonal migrations. Litters averaging 7.8 were born in late March and April, primarily in the north central sector of the park. Limited evidence suggests that elk (Cervus elaphus) were important food for wolves during all seasons. Wolves either survived the control era or moved in shortly thereafter for singles, pairs, and a pack of four were reported the following decade. Resident wolf packs, however, were eliminated from Yellowstone National Park by the l940s. Large canids have been sighted intermittently to the present, but their identity has not been established. Singles and pairs comprised 89% of 116 "probable" reports over the past 50 years. Speculation about factors limiting the Yellowstone wolf population considers its relative geographic isolation from viable wolf populations and possible genetic problems (including wolf-coyote hybridization) associated with prolonged minimal population status. A transplant of wolves from British Columbia or Alberta, or perhaps Minnesota, is recommended to restore a viable population of this native predator to Yellowstone National Park. However, there is often not a close match between elements of the traditional engineering education, and the skill sets that graduates need to possess for success in the industrial environment. Considerable progress has been made to restructure engineering courses and curricula. What is lacking, however, are tools and methodologies that incorporate the many dimensions of college courses, and how they are structured to form a curriculum. If curriculum changes are to be made, the first objective must be to determine what knowledge and skills engineering graduates need to possess. To accomplish this, a set of engineering competencies was developed from existing literature, and used in the development of a comprehensive mail survey of alumni, employers, students and faculty. Respondents proposed some changes to the topics in the curriculum and recommended that work to improve the curriculum be focused on communication, problem solving, and people skills. The process of designing a curriculum is similar to engineering design, with requirements that must be met, and objectives that must be optimized. From this similarity came the idea for developing a linear, additive, multi-objective model that identifies the objectives that must be considered when designing a curriculum, and contains the mathematical relationships necessary to quantify the value of a specific alternative. The model incorporates the three primary objectives of engineering topics, skills, and curriculum design principles and uses data from the survey. It was used to design new courses, to evaluate various curricula alternatives, and to conduct sensitivity analysis to better understand their differences. Using the multi-objective model to identify the highest scoring curriculum from a catalog of courses is difficult because of the many factors being considered. To assist this process, the multi-objective model and the curriculum requirements were incorporated in a linear program to select the "optimum" curriculum.
