While such increased interactivity has traditionally been accomplished through the use of server-side CGI scripts, much recent research on Web browsers has been on extending their capabilities through the addition of various types of client-side services. The most popular of these extensions take the form of plug-ins, applets, and "document scripts" such as Java Script. However, because these extensions have been created in a haphazard way by a variety of independent groups, they suffer greatly in terms of flexibility, uniformity, and interoperability. Interactive HTML is a system that addresses these problems by combining plug-ins, applets, and document scripts into one uniform and cohesive architecture. It is implemented as an external C library that can be used by a browser programmer to add client-side services to the browser. The IHTML services are implemented as dynamically loaded "language modules," allowing new plug-ins and language interpreters to be added to an iHTML browser without recompiling the browser itself. The system is currently integrated with NCSA's X Mosaic browser and includes language modules for a text viewer plug-in and Python language interpreter. This thesis examines the iHTML architecture in the context of the historical development of Web client-side services and presents an example of iHTML's use to collect usage information about Web documents. Only recently more pressure has been put on developing a holistic, science-based approach that considers the ecosystem as a whole. This approach is widely known as ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM). One of the most often highlighted aspects of EBFM is the relevance of predator-prey interactions in the aquatic ecosystems. The motivation is that there are considerable trade-offs between the supporting role of forage species as energy conveyors in food webs and provisioning service as target species to fisheries. We study this aspect by looking at the Chesapeake Bay. The motivation is a recent debate on the potential impact of excessive forage base fishing. In particular, we are interested in the propagation of forage overfishing through the food web and its influence on more valuable, higher trophic species fisheries. We develop a Bayesian model of recreational harvest of striped bass where benefits are derived from stock size as well as age structure. The age structure drives the probability of catching a fish of a particular size what is of considerable importance to the fishery highly constrained by minimum catch size regulations. Then, using a dynamic multispecies framework (Ecosim) and modified random utility model, we analyze multiple scenarios varying by menhaden regulations and derive benefits changes imposed on the striped bass recreational fishery. We focus on the recreational sector as recent research indicates that the recreational fishing is becoming increasingly important and new management strategies may be necessary to address this shifting trend. Choosing the most user-friendly Web architecture to reflect the many services libraries offer is a complex process, and librarians are still experimenting with what works best for their users. As part of a redesign of the Oregon State University (OSU) Libraries’ Web site, entry points for specific user groups were created. One of these user groups was graduate students. The purpose of this study was to explore the ways that other academic libraries are designing their Web sites for particular user groups, specifically graduate students, in order to determine how the OSU Libraries Web site compared to peer institutions. This study analyzed 112 Association of Research Libraries’ (ARL) Web sites and 26 Oregon academic libraries’ Web sites to determine the availability of resources and services specifically promoted to graduate students. Since graduate students may view the library Web site through the lens of either new student, researcher or instructor, Web sites were also examined to see if sites were created with any or all of these roles in mind. Nearly a quarter of the ARL Web sites examined contained a link on the home page for graduate students, and another twenty percent provided graduate student information at a lower level in their Web site hierarchy. A majority of sites had events, subject or course guides for graduate students. Information for graduate students was typically framed in the context of graduate students as researchers. Ideas and examples are given for ways to improve Web site design to better serve this user group. Future studies will aim to explore what graduate students need from academic libraries, as well as the ways these students conduct themselves in their various roles of researcher, instructor and new student, in order to provide improved services to these students. One impact is the increase in off-site library users who make in-person reference interviews impossible. To serve this new 'cntele, academic libraries are setting up electronic reference services to meet offsite information needs. This new approach is not without challenges. It requires effective humanmachine connections to provide smooth reference transactions since librarian-patron contact happens solely through computers. The most challenging aspect of providing electronic reference services to off-site users is deciding when patrons need help. If their needs are not detected, many unsuccessful searches will go undiscovered and end-users may never fmd the information they were seeking. To meet this challenge, pertinent information technology is needed to track web traffic patterns and user behavior (e.g. web mining), addressing immediately the difficulties encountered by end-users. The machine's capability to track potentially unsuccessful searches depends on human experts' ability to identify trouble signs, and add value to the electronic transaction experience with their experiences and skills. This paper's emphasis is on human-computer connections relating to reference librarians' application of web mining technology to transfer their experiences and skills from the reference desk to the web environment. It examines web mining techniques and their potential to assist different library functions. A scenario is used to conceptualize a model that can effectively apply web mining technology to perform various functions of electronic reference services. It also proposes a methodology that librarian can adapt in offering mediation during the search at patrons' discretion. The main goal is to provide more seamless electronic reference transactions. Discussion of library professionals' roles in human-computer interactions in the electronic world follows.
