This is unfortunate because people with serious mental illnesses frequently report that community integration is not only important to them, but that it also aids in reducing symptoms and promoting recovery (Townley, 2015). Although past research suggests that receiving mental health care in the community has a positive impact on symptom management, the influence of other community factors (e.g., sense of community, community participation) has yet to be fully explored (Segal, Silverman, & Temkin, 2010). Furthermore, there is lack of understanding as to how these community factors influence other aspects of recovery, such as mental and physical health. As such, the goal of the current study is to better understand the association between community participation and recovery by investigating sense of community as a potential mediating factor between community participation, psychological distress, mental health, and physical health. Data were collected from 300 adults with serious mental illnesses utilizing community mental health services in the United States. Results indicated that sense of community partially mediated the association between community participation and mental health, as well as psychological distress, and fully mediated the association between community participation and physical health. Implications include contributing to the current knowledge base about the role of community factors in recovery and informing future interventions aimed at promoting community integration of adults with serious mental illnesses. Using the Internet for social interactions has been shown to contribute to an individual's identity development, sense of community, and well-being (Obst, Zinkiewicz, & Smith, 2002a; Turkle, 1995). While challenges in typical social interactions have traditionally been considered a defining feature of autism spectrum disorder, autistic individuals have taken advantage of the Internet to develop social interactions (Blume, 1997a). The present study focused on the online Autistic community and how the importance and value of involvement in it is related to Autistic identity, sense of community, and psychological well-being. The Academic Autistic Spectrum Partnership in Research and Education (AASPIRE) partnered with the Gernsbacher Lab to form the Gateway Project. Using the Gateway Project, AASPIRE conducted the Internet Use, Community, and Well-Being Study and collected data from 72 autistic adults online. It was hypothesized that the importance and value of involvement in the online Autistic community would be positively related to Autistic identity and sense of community, Autistic identity and sense of community would be positively related, and Autistic identity and sense of community would be positively related to psychological well-being. It was also hypothesized that the positive relationship between the importance and value of involvement in the online Autistic community and psychological well-being would be mediated by Autistic identity and sense of community. Correlations were examined among the hypothesized relationships, and a mediated regression model (Baron & Kenny, 1986) was used to explore the relationship between the importance and value of involvement in the online Autistic community and psychological well-being with Autistic identity and sense of community as mediators. Significant relationships were found between the importance and value of involvement in the online Autistic community and Autistic identity, between the importance and value of involvement in the online Autistic community and sense of community, and between autistic identity and sense of community. As a first step to test the mediated regression models, psychological well-being was regressed on the importance and value of involvement in the online Autistic community. The regression was not significant; therefore the hypothesized model was not significant. Despite non-significant mediated regression model results, significant relationships among the importance and value of involvement in the online Autistic community and Autistic identity and sense of community offer important results. These finding illuminate the potential positive impact of the importance and value of involvement in the online Autistic community, including evidence counter to the myth that autistic individuals lack skills necessary for social relationships. These findings support the positive utility of involvement in the online Autistic community for autistic adults. Further research with a larger sample size is recommended, due to low power coefficients in the analyses. Additional research may also further illuminate the findings of the current study. The Slavic community is defined as those from the former Soviet Union. It is the largest refugee-based community in Oregon, with most arriving in the decade from 1990 to 2000. Conventional definitions of the Slavic community are to define them as White. In the vast majority of datasets, it is not possible to extract the Slavic community as ancestry or language data have not been collected. To address the shortage of data on the community, we included a qualitative research study to extend our understanding of the community’s experience. The data presented in this report begin to help us understand the challenges facing the Slavic community. While the results are indeed unsettling, there is opportunity to create a new policy environment that supports communities of color. Our main priority is to advocate for policy decisions that improve the individual and collective outcomes of the Slavic community and, in so doing, improve outcomes for all Oregonians. We hold an empowered racial equity coalition as central to addressing racial inequities. This report builds an important knowledge base from which to advocate and to educate. Educating our community and the community at large about the Slavic community is crucial to achieving racial equity. One of the biggest threats to the Slavic community is its invisibility and marginalization that flows from the lack of data on their experiences in many walks of life: the school system, child welfare, criminal and juvenile justice, health and social services. The fact that no data are collected on this community in mainstream institutions is deeply troubling and needs to be remedied immediately. This community is the largest of our refugee groups. We must serve the community better – the journey begins with documenting and rendering visible their experiences. Community engaged research, also known as, community based participatory research (CBPR), and participatory action research (PAR) is increasingly recognized as a framework for high quality scientific inquiry. In community engaged research, researchers and evaluators work side‐by‐side with community members in all phases of the research process, from defining social problems and research questions, conceptualizing research design, carrying out research, and interpreting and disseminating findings. It requires partnership development, collaboration and cooperation, and commitment to improving community life by equitably working together to build knowledge, improve practices and achieve social change. Community engaged research has gained in popularity, in part because traditional research approaches have faced substantial challenges in translating basic science into real‐world practice. Researchers and community leaders have increasingly recognized the need to work together to successfully address complex social issues such as homelessness and health disparities. The added benefits of community engaged research include increased community involvement, increased mutual trust and respect in the research process, increased reliability and validity of research results, and collaboration in implementing effective solutions. In the context of "re‐engineering the clinical research enterprise," growing consensus regarding the value of community engaged research is reflected in the National Institutes of Health, Roadmap for Medical Research. In the roadmap, the National Institute of Health (NIH) called for creating a new research culture that brings together communities and researchers from different disciplines and backgrounds. In line with this commitment, the NIH, National Science Foundation (NSF), W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and numerous other federal and nonfederal entities are investing in community‐researcher grant partnerships, interdisciplinary transformative and translational research initiatives, and development of a new cadre of researchers from diverse communities. They provide a diverse employment base for local residents, leading to greater economic stability. Small businesses create opportunities for keeping dollars circulating within the community, multiplying the benefits of those dollars. Creating such internal-multipliers within the economy of a community is a strategy for strengthening the community as a whole. This benefit extends to communities of color, immigrant communities, ethnic minority communities, and sexual minority communities. Not all minority communities share in common a geographic location. They can be found residing in a relatively compact neighborhood just as they are often dispersed over a larger geographic area, such as a region. However a minority community is distributed, clusters of businesses serving a particular community provide value. In addition to generating wealth, business clusters facilitate the creation of place, for a community to meet. These places become important to the sense of identity and pride for the communities they serve. The goal of this project is to facilitate the strengthening of small businesses 3:nd business clusters that serve minority communities. Small businesses are defined as businesses with less than 50 employees. Small businesses serving minority communities include businesses that provide goods and services that mayor may not be unique to a minority community. These businesses may be owned by and employ members of a minority community. They may provide "third places" where people can gather and relax, or they may support community events. These small businesses may cluster to share a clientele base or provide goods and services to other businesses in the cluster. These relationships create inter-dependencies among the businesses in the cluster and the communities they serve. Understanding and attending to the inter-dependencies of small business clusters is one strategy for maintaining the viability of the businesses comprising the cluster. With greater understanding of the local dynamics of these clusters, planning and public investment decisions can be made to effectively strengthen small businesses and the minority communities they serve. In Portland, Oregon, the Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Area (ORA) and the planning process in the West End offer opportunities for such business- and community-strengthening efforts. Our team performed case studies in the Interstate corridor URA and downtown's West End to identify small businesses serving minority communities, the presence of business clusters and their dynamics. These specific areas of interest include N. Killingsworth Avenue, between Interstate-5 and Cleveland, in the Interstate Corridor URA and the Burnside Triangle in the West End. Within each case study area, we inventoried businesses using Regional Land Information System (RLIS) and City of Portland Bureau of Licenses data. We then conducted interviews with a sample of these businesses to gain a greater understanding of business characteristics as well as to identify business clusters and their mutually supporting dynamics. The interviews included questions to business owners about what would help strengthen their business as well as questions to customers about their patronage habits. We then synthesized findings from these interviews with those from a review of economic development literature to develop strategies and recommendations for strengthe:o.i.rrg small businesses and the communities they serve. We further intend this project to serve as a model for identifying small business clusters serving minority communities and determining how planning efforts can strengthen those businesses and the communities they serve. This thesis situates community orchards within the literature on alternative food networks (AFN) and highlights three key findings drawing on literature about community development and race in AFNs. First, neighbors and non-neighbors who participate in the project propose different definitions of community. Second, neighbor involvement is limited by a number of factors, including neighborhood divisions and organizational challenges. Notably, orchard participants do not reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of the neighborhood, putting this project at risk of creating a white space in a majority people of color neighborhood and reproducing inequality rather than fighting against it. Finally, this research complicates the notion of community in alternative food networks and demonstrates how collaborating with an organization from outside the neighborhood impacted the community through increasing non-neighbor participation and through their communications, aesthetics, decision making, and inattention to racial dynamics in the neighborhood and orchard. Through conversations with volunteers who participate regularly and participant observation, this study explores the questions: What does community mean in the context of a community orchard? Methods: A process evaluation identified a multitiered approach to training and education that was critical to reaching the broad community. Results: This approach included four major categories providing a continuum of education and training opportunities: networking, methods training, on-the-job experience, and community education. Participation in these opportunities supported the development of a registry, the implementation of a survey, and two published manuscripts. Barriers included the lack of a formal evaluation of the education and training components, language challenges that limited involvement of ethnic groups other than Puerto Ricans, and potential biases associated with the familiarity of the data collector and the participant. The CBPR process facilitated relationship development between the university and the community and incorporated the richness of the community experience into research design. Strategies for improvement include incorporating evaluation into every training and educational opportunity and developing measures to quantify research capacity at the individual and community levels. Conclusions: Evaluating training and education in the community allows researchers to quantify the impact of CBPR on building community research capacity.
