The results seemed to suggest that the two groups of patients were more similar than dissimilar regarding demographic characteristics. The pre-existing literature provides rich information about patients' various demographics related to patient experience. Despite the abundance of empirical evidence showing that patients' demographics do affect how they perceive their health care. However, there is little to no empirical knowledge explaining the significance of such factors. As the existing literature points out the need for taking into contextual factors such as patient's beliefs, attitudes, skills that are pertinent to dealing with health care, my study proposes patient activation as such a contextual factor that explains the association between patient demographics and patient experience. Findings suggest that patient activation is a strong predictor of two patient experience measures: patients' rating of doctor-patient communication and their self-reported difficulties in getting needed care. However, it is also observed that the mediating effects of patient activation vary by the two dimensions of patient experiences. Though this study demonstrates that promoting patient activation may be able to normalize how patients report the quality of doctor-patient interaction, further research is needed to address access to care issues. Clatsop County is one area that is experiencing this population change (See Figure 1). Clatsop County has long remained ethnically homogenous. Yet, the rapid growth of the Latino population coincides at a time where the White population decreases in much of the county. There are few reports, describing the needs of the Latino population in the areas of planning and community. This report details several key demographic and economic indicators for the Latino community from secondary data sources to help planners, community developers, and policy makers understand the unique needs of the Hispanic population. The picture these data sources display, tells the story of a young, family oriented community struggling to find affordable housing and economic opportunities. The market area for this study consists of Northern Wasco County and Hood River County School Districts in Oregon, and White Salmon School District in Washington. Horizon Christian School, offering grades pre-kindergarten through 12, is located in the city of Hood River and its classrooms are located in rented spaces at three different sites throughout the city. Plans to construct a new facility to house Horizon on one campus have been made. The factors that are likely to affect Horizon’s enrollments are considered in this report, including the occurrence of demographic events and the construction of a new school facility. Three different scenarios of enrollment changes were developed to account for different probabilities of demographic changes and the effects a new school facility will have on enrollments. Each of the three Enrollment Forecasts uses one of the following assumptions: (a) current demographic and enrollment trends will continue throughout the forecast period; (b) a new school facility will be constructed and operational beginning in the 2006-07 school year, and (c) a new school facility will be operational beginning in the 2006-07 school year and population growth in Horizon’s market area will increase during the forecast period. Year: 2007 The City of Gresham Parks & Recreation Division (GPRD) requested that the Portland State University Population Research Center (PRC) prepare a demographic profile, population forecasts, and parks and natural areas access analyses (‘parks access’) for the City of Gresham and its Springwater and Pleasant Valley planning areas. The study will inform GPRD’s Parks, Natural Areas, and Trails Comprehensive Planning effort, currently underway. The demographic profile discusses current conditions and likely future trends for population, housing, and households, with a focus on age and race/ethnicity. It includes many demographic map ‘layers’, which in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software can be overlayed on parks access layers. Year-2020 population forecasts are prepared by age and sex for the City of Gresham and, for the general population, by Gresham’s neighborhoods, Pleasant Valley, and Springwater. Parks access analyses focus on GPRD parkland typologies: Neighborhood and Community parks, Natural Areas (Open Space), and Trails. One model includes versions for existing and proposed conditions, while the other two build on the first, adding an analysis of parkland quality, proximity to schools, and proximity to parks outside Gresham. Model summaries and other parks access data, by neighborhood, are provided in an appendix. The report is divided into two main sections: Section I includes the demographic profile and population forecasts. Section II covers the parks access analyses. Together, both sections hold insights and analytical tools with which the City of Gresham can move forward confidently in its Comprehensive Planning effort. Group vitality, the position a group takes based on structures in society, is partially formed by institutional support. This includes representation and depiction in the media. Niche describes specialized content that gratifies individuals, groups, and their needs. This content can be found in the form of books, music, film, television, and more. The current study focused on niche television content preference within specific groups of people based on their demographics. Separate genres were considered niche categories in this research. Participants were asked to rate how much they enjoyed different genres of television on a Likert-type scale. They were also asked to report how much television they watch per day, which television services they use to watch, and their demographic information. Based on the data, sports are more popular with males than females, reality television is more popular with females than males, and Netflix is extremely popular. Future research possibilities include a focus on psychographics instead of demographics, exploring how different audiences feel about another medium and its variety of choices, or doing this research on a larger scale. Methods: Ambulatory participants from NHANES (2003-2004) who were 20-85 years of age were included in the current study and wore an ActiGraph 7164 accelerometer for 7 days. A "valid person" was defined as those with 4 or more days of at least 10+ hrs of monitoring per day. Among adults (20-85 yrs), 3088 participants provided VAD and 987 provided IAD. Demographic, behavioral, and biological information were obtained from the household interview or from data obtained in a mobile examination center. Results: Differences were observed in age, BMI, ethnicity, education, smoking status, marital status, use of street drugs, current health status, HDL-cholesterol, C-reactive protein, self-reported vigorous physical activity, and plasma glucose levels between those with VAD and IAD. Consequently, the pairing of a younger supervisor with a relatively older employee is becoming increasingly more common. Research in the United States has shown that such demographically "non-normative" pairings have negative implications for employee attitudes and behaviors, and thus for employee performance management. However, little is known about the effects of such pairings in other nations and cultures, despite the fact that these demographic shifts are occurring on a global level. As such, this study examined the effects of these pairings on employee reactions to formal performance feedback episodes in a large organization in China, due to the nation's similarly shifting demographic trends and its economic power in today's global economy. A series of path analyses showed that being paired with a relatively younger supervisor did predict reduced employee feedback satisfaction and perceptions of feedback utility; but, contrary to the proposed model, these effects did not occur because of reduced interactional justice perceptions or reduced perceptions of leader-member exchange (LMX). Methods: Six hundred randomly selected active members of the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians were sent six hypothetical progress notes of office visits along with a demographic survey. The study group assigned CPT evaluation and management codes to each of the progress notes and completed the demographic survey. Five expert coders also assigned codes to each of the cases. The accuracy of family physicians in determining CPT E/M codes was determined relative to that of expert coders. Results: Family physicians agreed with the experts’ CPT evaluation and management codes for 52% of established patient progress notes, the most common error being undercoding. In contrast, for new patient progress notes, family physicians agreed with the experts only 17% of the time, the predominant error being overcoding. No surveyed demographic variable was associated with coding accuracy. Conclusions: The error rate for physician CPT coding is substantial and occurs more commonly with new patients. An NSF Biocomplexity Project - "Feedbacks between Urban Systems and the Environment" (FUSE), led by Portland State University, studies the human feedbacks and responses to air quality and heat advisories through data collected in city-wide phone surveys in Portland, OR and Houston, TX. On days when ozone levels are predicted to exceed air quality standards, regulatory agencies issue air quality advisories which ask residents to reduce certain air polluting behaviors such as driving and lawn mowing. However, there have been very few studies of the effectiveness of these systems. Previous work documented that in both Portland and Houston, around ~10% of the population respond to voluntary advisories (Semenza et. al, 2008). In the testbed cities, the survey also asked respondents questions about their personal emissions-related behavior such as driving, mowing, use of household products, etc., as well as how that behavior was effected by an air quality advisory. Objectives: In this project, the survey data is used to accomplish three major tasks. Firstly, to estimate emissions based on the survey responses. For example, estimating VOC emissions based on reported mowing behavior (size of lawn, frequency of mowing, and type of mower). Secondly, to compare reported behavior during normal days to behavior during air advisory days. And finally, to compare the emissions estimates to demographic data (such as population density) to find any trends. For example, can variations in emission patterns be predicted using a demographic characteristic such as housing density? Currently the EPA and the Oregon DEQ estimate many types of emissions on a per capita basis. These per capita emissions numbers are generally not adjusted for any local demographic information. One additional use of this research could be to improve current emissions estimation methods. Methods: Survey responses to questions about emissions related behavior were used as activity factors in emissions calculations. The emission estimations were then tested against demographics such as housing density. For the purpose of graphical representation, housing density was broken into four quartiles to represent four different levels of density. For statistical analysis housing density was not categorized. Results: Emissions behavior, in several cases, appears to be linked to demographic features such as housing density. Per capita lawn care hydrocarbon emissions, vehicle emissions, and several consumer product category emissions trend higher towards lower housing density in both Portland and Houston. Conclusions: The results of this research project could be used to tailor air quality advisories to better target their audience with appropriate messages, thereby more effectively improving air quality during potentially hazardous air quality conditions. Year: 1982 A national resolution to alter the educational and practice requirements for nurses by 1985 has been adopted in Oregon. It has been theorized that how nurses organize their multiple roles and the degrees of role deprivation they experience will affect their views toward professional issues. Prior research suggests there be a relationship between certain demographic variables and nurses' role organization and role deprivation. The study sought to establish the relationship of selected demographic variables and the variables of type of role organization and deprivation to nurses' views of four facets of the 1985 Resolution. The intent was to examine the efficacy of a conceptual model of role organization and deprivation in distinguishing and explaining nurses' views toward the resolution. As a further research contribution to nurse role theory development, the effects of nursing education preparation and length of work experience on the variables of role organization type and role deprivation were examined. The data were obtained by mailed questionnaire using 247 nurses randomly selected in Oregon. Instrumentation included a demographics sheet, a role organization tool, and a questionnaire on the resolution. The data were analyzed using Chi-square crosstabulations and Factorial ANOVA. Oregon nurses were found to be equally divided in their views on two levels of nursing practice and a bachelor's requirement for entry into professional practice. The majority supported inclusion of a protective clause in the resolution for currently licensed nurses and development of a nurse career ladder. The relationship of selected demographic variables to nurses' views on the resolution were examined and established. Significant differences were found among nurses when type of .basic nursing education program and level of nursing education achieved were considered. Baccalaureate nurses more frequently supported two levels of practice and a bachelor's requirement than did either associate degree or diploma nurses. They were found to differ significantly from associate degree and diploma nurses in their degree of opposition to a protective clause in the resolution. Significant differences in views on all resolution items were found when advanced nursing education preparation was considered. As the level of nursing preparation beyond the basic program increased, the degree of support for the two levels of practice and bachelor's requirement increased and the greater the opposition expressed to both the protective clause and the career ladder. Subjects differed significantly in their views when type of role organization and role deprivation were examined. Nurses with high bureaucratic-high professional allegiances and nurses with low bureaucratic-high professional allegiances were more supportive of the resolution than were nurses with either high bureaucratic-low professionals allegiances or low bureaucratic-low professional allegiances. Nurses with a high degree of role deprivation were significantly more supportive of the resolution than were nurses with low role deprivation. The main and interaction effects of type of nursing preparation and length of work experience on the degrees of professional allegiance, bureaucratic allegiance, and role deprivation revealed that bureaucratic allegiance increases with work experience. No effect of the two variables on degree of role deprivation was found. Type of nursing program and length of work experience were found to interact and significantly affect the degree of professional allegiance. As length of work experience increased for associate degree and baccalaureate nurses, professional allegiance declined. Allegiance to professional ideals was found to increase with length of work experience for diploma nurses. As the level of nursing preparation beyond the basic program increased, the degree of support for the two levels of practice and bachelor's requirement increased and the greater the opposition expressed to both the protective clause and the career ladder. Subjects differed significantly in their views when type of role organization and role deprivation were examined. Nurses with high bureaucratic-high professional allegiances and nurses with low bureaucratic-high professional allegiances were more supportive of the resolution than were nurses with either high bureaucratic-low professionals allegiances or low bureaucratic-low professional allegiances. Nurses with a high degree of role deprivation were significantly more supportive of the resolution than were nurses with low role deprivation. The main and interaction effects of type of nursing preparation and length of work experience on the degrees of professional allegiance, bureaucratic allegiance, and role deprivation revealed that bureaucratic allegiance increases with work experience. No effect of the two variables on degree of role deprivation was found. Type of nursing program and length of work experience were found to interact and significantly affect the degree of professional allegiance. As length of work experience increased for associate degree and baccalaureate nurses, professional allegiance declined. Allegiance to professional ideals was found to increase with length of work experience for diploma nurses. The relationship of demographic and role organization variables to nurses• views on selected issues was established in the study. Role organization type, role deprivation, type of nursing preparation, and extent of nursing education are associated with nurses views toward the resolution. Close

Analytical bounds are developed for the logarithmic growth rate and the age-structure of a population after long times. For a two dimensional case, it is shown analytically that a uniform distribution results for the age-structure if the survival rate from the first to the second age-class is a uniformly distributed random quantity with no serial auto correlation. Numerical studies are made which lead to similar conclusions when the survival rate obeys other distributions. It is found that the variance in the survival parameter is linearly related to the variance in the age structure. An efficient algorithm is developed for numerical simulations on a computer by considering a time sequence of births rather than whole populations. The algorithm is then applied to an example in three dimensions to calculate a sequence of births when the survival rate from the first to the second age-class is a random parameter. It was a second purpose of this study to explore this issue on the basis of longitudinal survey data collected in the Northwest neighborhood in 1978 and 1993. The census analysis showed that the demographic change in Northwest Portland was surprisingly consistent with Gale's original stage model of gentrification from 1980, but not with predictions for more recent times. The analysis of the survey data showed a lack of overall change in the interactional and symbolic fabric of community life. T-tests for distinct life-cycle stages and socioeconomic status showed a perception of the Northwest neighborhood as a nicer and safer place for all groups. The young were found to form a community consistent with the model of a "community of limited liability." METHODS: Chi square analysis was used to determine if there was a significant difference in acceptance/eligibility rate between the target population of African American women with HIV/AIDS and the general disability population. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between demographic variables and vocational rehabilitation services received on employment outcomes for the target population. RESULTS: Results indicate that the African American women with HIV/AIDS were found ineligible for services at a lower rate, 14%, than the general population of persons with disabilities served, 17%. However, even though they are more likely to be accepted for services, the competitive employment outcomes are lower than the general population of persons with disabilities. Results also indicate that the hypothesized demographic and VR service-related predictor variables were significantly related to competitive employment outcomes. Specifically, receipt of cash benefits and diagnostic /treatment VR services had a negative impact on employment outcomes. Factors positively associated with employment outcomes included receipt of job placement and maintenance services. CONCLUSIONS: Vocational rehabilitation counselors, researchers and other key stakeholders must identify the most effective strategies to assist African American women with HIV/AIDS in navigating the VR process from application to closure as competitively employed. Middle grades (6th‐8th) in District schools gained enrollment in 2012‐13, and are just 59 students (2.0 percent) below their 2009‐10 peak. District‐wide enrollment in high school grades 9‐12 has been virtually unchanged since 2010‐11 and remains near its peak. The present study analyzes two data sets on border deaths, one for the European Union and one for Australia, to examine the demographics of the refugees who perish while attempting to transgress the border. Results indicated that there remains a significant amount of missing data, suggesting that official methods of record-keeping are necessary to determine the most basic demographics, such as gender and age, so analyses can be run to determine significance in this area. One clear finding was that migrants most frequently die from drowning (EU: 83.6%; AU: 93%) compared to any other cause. Also, there is indication that those from disadvantaged areas of origin (such as the Middle East and Africa) are more likely to die in the borderlands than others in the dataset. To accomplish this aim, the authors applied a latent class growth analysis (LCGA) to services use data from a sample of rural CCI adults who reported their medical, mental health, and substance use treatment utilization behavior every 60 days for 1.5 years. LCGA established 1.5-year trajectories and demographic correlates of health services among rural CCI adults. For medical services, three classes emerged (stable-low users, 13%; stable-intermediate users, 40%; and stable-high users, 47%). For mental health and substance use services, three classes emerged (stable-low, 69% and 61%, respectively; low-baseline-increase, 10% and 12%, respectively; high-baseline decline, 21% and 28%, respectively). Employment, gender, medication usage, and depression severity predicted membership across all services. ORcycle combines GPS revealed route data collection with new questionnaires that try to elicit cyclists’ attitudes as well as comfort levels and factors that influence their perceived comfort and route choice. The new questionnaires were developed to better understand how cyclists’ comfort levels are affected by route characteristics, route stressors, safety reports, cyclists’ demographics, and cyclists’ cycling attitude. Preliminary results show that many trip characteristics, route choice factors, route stressors and demographic variables are correlated with comfort levels. ORcycle is the first statewide deployment of a smartphone application to collect bicycle specific safety and crash data in addition to travel and comfort data. ORcycle combines GPS revealed route data collection with new questionnaires that try to elicit cyclists’ attitudes as well as comfort levels and factors that influence their perceived comfort and route choice. The new questionnaires were developed to better understand how cyclists’ comfort levels are affected by route characteristics, route stressors, safety reports, cyclists’ demographics, and cyclists’ cycling attitude. Preliminary results show that many trip characteristics, route choice factors, route stressors and demographic variables are correlated with comfort levels. ORcycle is the first statewide deployment of a smartphone application to collect bicycle specific safety and crash data in addition to travel and comfort data. Potential applications that can take advantage of the ORcycle data include: comfort and route models, prioritization of network improvements, and crash and injury risk models. Close

The findings highlight the need to recognize (1) the differing framing of ecosystem services by decision makers versus scientists; and (2) the differing data priorities relevant to inland versus coastal decision makers. The study includes analyses of population, housing and enrollment trends affecting the District in recent years, low, middle, and high range forecasts of district-wide enrollment by grade level for the 2010-11 to 2019-20 school years and middle range forecasts of individual school enrollments for the 2010-11 to 2014-15 school years. The District’s K-12 enrollment of 7,764 in 2009-10 was 232 students (2.9 percent) below its 2004-05 peak enrollment of 7,796 students. The 2008-09 to 2009-10 loss of 114 students (1.4 percent) was the District’s biggest K-12 enrollment decline in more than 20 years. Despite the overall loss, kindergarten and 1st grade enrollments experienced a third consecutive year of small enrollment increases.
