The purpose of this process was to explore, understand, and integrate linkages between early learning and young child and family health; identify health-related resources currently available and accessible to NDC families; and prioritize health areas of interest to be explored during the CHNA. The North Douglas County CHNA builds on community partnerships already established in the region through initiatives that aim to coordinate and align early learning and K-12 systems. The work of Yoncalla Early Works (“YEW”, initiated in 2012 with funding from The Ford Family Foundation and Children’s Institute) and North Douglas P3 (“NDP3”, initiated in 2014 with funding from the Oregon Community Foundation) demonstrate community commitment to supporting young children and families. The work of community members through these initiatives laid the foundation for the region’s readiness to engage in a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) planning process Ultimately, this first planning phase of the CHNA resulted in recommendations to conduct Phase 2 of the CHNA in North Douglas County, and is expected to get underway in summer/fall 2016 in collaboration with community members. The Community Health Needs Assessment will seek to answer the following questions: 1. What does health look like for children ages birth-to-8 and their families in North Douglas County? 2. What health services are available and accessible to children and families in North Douglas County? 3. What health services do families in North Douglas County need and want? 4. What needs to happen for health services to be available and accessible for North Douglas County children ages birth-to-8 and their families?   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Family variables which are associated with achievement of community tenure by persons released from psychiatric hospitalization Author: Chambers, Thomas Mack Year: 1973 The pattern of frequent discharges and readmissions which characterizes most psychiatric hospitalization in this country today was described, and it was argued that the costs of this “revolving door” outweigh such benefits as might be derived from it. An alternative stepwise progression model of aftercare was proposed. This model identified community tenure as the most appropriate goal for initial aftercare efforts. Attempts to identify correlates of the establishment of community tenure by mental hospital releasees were reviewed. It was found that the ex-patient's ability to remain in the community is not highly correlated with the extent to which he manifests deviant behavior. This finding was interpreted as an indication that environmental factors may play significant part in ex-patients’ avoidance of rehospitalization. Data were presented which indicated that a clear majority of mental hospital releasees take up residency immediately with family members. It was hypothesized, then, that measurable family variables are correlated with the ability of the ex-patient to achieve community tenure. An attempt was made to examine this hypothesis in the light of relevant research. Studies of the issue which contained substantive empirical support were categorized into four topic areas: family tolerance of the ex-patient's symptomatic behavior, kin role which the family affords to the ex-patient, familial expectations of the ex-patient's performance, and family attitudes and personality characteristics. After reviewing the studies of authors who attempted to assess the degree of correlation between the capacity of the ex-patient’s family to tolerate symptomatic behavior on the part of the ex-patient and the ex-patient’s ability to avoid rehospitalization, it was concluded that the linear correlation between the two variables which would be predicted logically may not exist. A review of studies of the relationship between the kin role which the ex-patient's family affords to him and the ex-patient's ability to achieve community tenure yielded a tentative conclusion that returning to the social biological role of “child” (son or daughter) as opposed to the kin role of spouse was positively correlated with remaining in the community. After examining studies which attempted to explore the relationship between familial expectations of instrumental performance on the part of the ex-patient and the ability of the ex-patient to avoid rehospitalization, it was concluded that little support was provided for the hypothesis that the two variables are related. No wonder then that a recurrent issue within the study of delinquent behavior has been the precise etiological role of the family. This thesis begins with an historical examination of the different approaches taken in the sociological study of delinquency and the family. This research investigated whether "interactive effects" are important in conceptualizing and understanding the family's etiological role. The concept of interaction is based upon the assumption that variables may not have causal efficacy within themselves, entirely independent of other variables. Variable interaction occurs when the effect of an independent variable varies depending on the value of another independent variable. This study utilized questionnaire data gathered as a part of the Richmond Youth Study by the Survey Research Center (University of California, Berkeley) in 1965. The original stratified random sample consisted of 5,545 junior and senior high school students. While this sample included both male and female, black and nonblack adolescents, the present analysis focused on the 1,588 nonblack subsample. Survey data was available on a wide variety of youth-related issues, including self-reported delinquent activity and family conditions. This study analyzed the interactive effects of five family dimensions in relation to four other causal variables commonly associated with delinquency involvement: community social disorganization delinquent friends, attachment to peers, and delinquent definitions. Analysis of variance, a multivariate statistical model, was used to distinguish significant independent and interactive effects. Identified interactive effects were then examined through tabular analysis in order to provide a more precise understanding of how these variables interact in affecting delinquency involvement. Finally, the general notions of variable interaction which are implied by existing theories were assessed. The data analysis revealed that family factors influenced delinquency in different ways. The level of an adolescent's attachment to father was found to be independently related to delinquent activity after controlling for all other effects (independent and interactive). Paternal discipline had an interactive effect on delinquency such that the type of paternal discipline influenced the effect that community social disorganization and number of delinquent friends had on delinquency; in turn, paternal discipline was significantly related to delinquency involvement under certain conditions of these same variables. The other three family factors, however, did not have a significant independent or interactive effect on delinquency involvement. These findings suggest that causal explanation and research dealing solely with direct, independent effects may minimize and oversimplify the causal role of certain family factors. At least a small portion of the family's influence on delinquency involvement is through interactive effects with non-familial variables. Existing theories have failed to actively consider such interactive effects. Furthermore, the general notions of variable interaction which are implied by current theories failed to find support in the data of the present study. Guided by the stress process model, we investigate whether 823 employees occupying diverse family caregiving roles (child caregiving only, elder caregiving only, and both child caregiving and elder caregiving, or “sandwiched” caregiving) and their noncaregiving counterparts in the information technology division of a white-collar organization differ on several indicators of psychosocial stress along with gender differences in stress exposure. Compared with noncaregivers, child caregivers reported more perceived stress and partner strain whereas elder caregivers reported greater perceived stress and psychological distress. With the exception of work-to-family conflict, sandwiched caregivers reported poorer overall psychosocial functioning. Additionally, sandwiched women reported more family-to-work conflict and less partner support than their male counterparts. Further research on the implications of combining a white-collar employment role with different family caregiving roles is warranted. This study looks at the kinds of narrative inheritance concerning race that people in multiracial families receive and possible ways it affects racial identity formation. Findings from 12 semi-structured interviews indicate that narratives of racism, cultural pride, and hardship are prevalent in multiracial families. Additionally, findings show that varying family structures may affect the transference of racial narratives between generations, which can in turn affect how multiracial children choose to identify themselves racially. Year: 2017 This paper joins the literature on family-supportive supervisor behavior research and the self-other agreement (SOA) paradigm to ask the question, how does a congruent perspective in the supervisor-employee dyad relate to service-member workplace attitudes and work-family relationships? Supervisors rated themselves on Family-Supportive Supervisor Behaviors (FSSB) and were in turn rated by their service-member employees. Results of a polynomial regression and surface-response analysis point to the conclusion that as supervisor and service-members’ ratings of the supervisors FSSB rise in tandem, self-reported service-member workplace outcomes (job satisfaction, organizational commitment) rose as well. The variance in work-to-family conflict and work-to-family enrichment was not captured to a large enough extent by the SOA model to support the surface-response analysis. Contained within are further results and a discussion about the importance of congruence between both perspectives. Finding a fit between the demands of work and family life is a struggle for every employed mother and father. For parents whose children have emotional, behavioral, or mental disorders, meeting this challenge can prove extremely stressful, particularly since supportive services are notably lacking. There has been little research on the perceptions of employed parents of children with mental health concerns about the ways in which work and family responsibilities can fit together. In order to improve services to these families, there has been an increasing focus on improving collaboration between child welfare, treatment providers, and the court systems. This paper presents the results from qualitative interviews with 104 representatives of these three systems that explore how the collaborative process works to benefit families, as well as the barriers and supports for building successful collaborations. Results indicate that collaboration has at least three major functions: building shared value systems, improving communication, and providing a "team" of support. Each of these leads to different kinds of benefits for families as well as providers and has different implications for building successful collaborative interventions. Despite these putative benefits, providers within each system, however, continue to struggle to build effective collaborations, and they face such issues as deeply ingrained mistrust and continued lack of understanding of other systems' values, goals, and perspectives.
