In this tragic accident 1,517 people died, being one of the deadliest maritime disaster in history. The large number of deaths was due to many factors: the ship only carried enough lifeboats for 1,178 people but only 713 people survived, some of the boats didn’t deployed or had problems, and many of the lifeboats that left were not full. While children and women were prioritized to escape first, many passenger and crew member were unable to get onto any lifeboats. There were also rumors of wealthy passengers who bribed the crew to let them escape on lifeboats with a handful of survivors. With this paper, we are trying to evaluate two different data mining approaches to determine whether an individual would, or would not, survived. Our data mining algorithms use the same data set, which is based on personal information of those passengers aboard the Titanic on that fatidic day. One benefit of importance for the purposes of this paper is hydropower, which provides large amounts of electrical power to communities and industries across the Pacific Northwest (PNW) region. However, the success of hydropower’s long and productive history in the PNW has at times been clouded by socio-political, economic, and environmental issues that arise over how Columbia River water resources are managed for multiple uses and which ones take precedence. Further complicating these conflicts are ecological systems that can significantly alter the river’s conditions. Winter rain and spring snowmelt are two such characteristics of the river’s ecology that make the management of the river for hydropower purposes very difficult. Add another variable – the introduction and integration of wind power in this hydropower system and one quickly realizes that management of the river includes multiple actors with various agendas often resulting in conflict. The discussion below highlights the socio-political factors, as well as the regulatory and economic factors that, in their aggregate, exert pressure on the future of wind power deployment in the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA)’s balancing authority. I begin by describing a high water management problem that BPA and its stakeholders have encountered several times in the past few years, which is the key issue that I focus on that inhibits this deployment. I then delve into a discussion of the research methodology – SPEED, which is used to analyze the problem and provide a management roadmap forward. After the SPEED analysis, a brief discussion of the implications of this particular problem is provided. It should be noted before continuing that this discussion focuses on how to mitigate complex management challenges in supporting the continued deployment of technology innovations. The “decision” to build (or not) is based is based on number of factors – some analytical, some not so analytical, i.e. “gut feelings”. It is the authors opinion that the “build/no-build” decision is entirely too non-analytical and unquantified. Decisions are made based on wild guesses, hunches and “gut-feelings”. This paper proposes to apply decision making theory, develop a decision model and document the decision making process. This analysis then can be used to quantify, the expected net income and the probability of such net income, on the project prior to making the “build/no-build” decision. Specifically, this paper analyzes the mixed-use category of construction end-product. The analysis uses costs and revenues to determine net incomes. Costs include land (dirt), hard costs, soft costs, construction loan interest and sales commissions. The revenue category is limited to condominium sales only. Initially, a uniformally random distribution for cost and revenues was assumed. It was determined that the results attained could be refined, to provide a more accurate estimation of net income, if the distribution was supplemented with Pairwise Comparison. Ten expert opinions were gathered to first, estimate the ranges about the cost and revenue components. The experts were provided an initial estimate, from which they estimated a range (lower and upper bound), around the initial estimate. The range for each component was divided into three equal intervals. Using a Pairwise Comparison, the intervals were evaluated by the experts. Probabilities were then computed for each possible outcome of net income. The probabilities were then plotted against the net income. The resultant output, the probability vs. net income graph (and associated table), are the tools that quantify the data and graphically depict, for the decision maker, the probability of economic success as predicted from expert opinion. The use of the Pairwise Comparison Technique indicated a slightly different, yet more robust (in the opinion of these authors) result, than the random distribution model had the Pairwise Comparison not been made. The American automobile market is affected by various factors, from both internal and external environment. In order to figure out the correlation among factors, we research on its historical performance in relation to many factors that may affect the automobile industry. Data about automobile sales and many economic and demographic variables are collected from a variety of sources. Automobile sales within U.S. are the dependent variable and the rest are independent variables. By using stepwise method in SPSS, the significant variables are selected and the first regression model is developed based on these variables. Next, we add a lag to all and some independent variables separately and come up with the second and third regression models. By comparing the adjusted R-square, we finally choose the optimized regression model to forecast U.S. automobile sales. The results indicate that some of the factors which significantly reflect the internal and external impact on the automobile market. By implementing historical data of each factor to the model, it can forecast the auto sale in U.S. domestic market. The results in this study could help the automakers better understand the domestic auto market. This paper will discuss the history of the FIA program; how technology has changed, the way field crew’s conduct inventories, as well as look at what new technologies are available to the FIA program. The new endeavor into interior Alaska, approximately 112 million forested acres in size, is the last remaining forested area within the United States to be inventoried. In 2014, the US Forest Service FIA program conducted a pilot inventory in the Tanana Valley of Alaska. This paper looks at current ways the field teams conduct inventories, and how state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies can assist with data collection. Analysis of technologies in use resulted in a set of recommendations related to; 1) Earlier adoption of newer technologies, which in turn allows for earlier adoption of even more future technologies. 2) Tighter integrations at a project management level to ensure overlap is reduced where possible, and 3) Broader, more open relationships with scientific bodies at all levels of the organization resulting in more informed decision making with regards to technology adoption thus optimizing each field team’s data gathered from field plots. Title: Evolution of Technology in the Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis Program Author: Alobaidi, Sarah, Deshpande, Tejas, Nigg, Donavon, Ozdemir, Dilek, Smith, Mike, Wehner, Nicole Year: 2016 The US Forest Service (USFS), Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program is the nation’s forest census program that has been conducting inventories of private and public forested lands for over 80 years. This paper will discuss the history of the FIA program; how technology has changed, the way field crew’s conduct inventories, as well as look at what new technologies are available to the FIA program. The new endeavor into interior Alaska, approximately 112 million forested acres in size, is the last remaining forested area within the United States to be inventoried. In 2014, the US Forest Service FIA program conducted a pilot inventory in the Tanana Valley of Alaska. This paper looks at current ways the field teams conduct inventories, and how state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies can assist with data collection. Analysis of technologies in use resulted in a set of recommendations related to; 1) Earlier adoption of newer technologies, which in turn allows for earlier adoption of even more future technologies. 2) Tighter integrations at a project management level to ensure overlap is reduced where possible, and 3) Broader, more open relationships with scientific bodies at all levels of the organization resulting in more informed decision making with regards to technology adoption thus optimizing each field team’s data gathered from field plots.
