Second, an economic optimization for space heating systems using geothermal energy is developed to obtain operating conditions for which the total (capital and operating) cost is a minimum. Both graphical and analytical methods are used in the thermodynamic optimization to determine the optimum flash temperature. The graphical method is based on thermodynamic data provided by an i-s (enthalpy-entropy) diagram for water and steam, in the analytical method, first and second order approximations (first and second degree polynomial approximations), are used for the functions which express enthalpy differences in terms of flash temperature. Numerical results are provided by computer programs developed for the analytical method. These results cover the temperature range normally encountered in practice. In the case of the single-flash cycle, results from both the graphical and analytical method using the first order approximation indicate the same optimum flash temperature; however, the correction factor resulting from the second order approximation improves the value of the temperature by a correction of about -2 ° C. Optimum flash temperatures for the double-flash cycle are similarly determined using the analytical method with a first order approximation. In the economic optimization of space heating systems, the analysis is made on the basis of the annual total cost per unit area of wall surface. It takes into account the cost of the geothermal fluid, cost of wall insulation, and heat exchanger cost. For a specific case where the inlet temperature to the heat exchanger is at 100° C and the outlet temperature at 28° C, the minimum annual cost to maintain a space at 20°C with an outside temperature of -l0°C is given at $0.0257 per square meter of wall area while the optimum thickness for the wall insulation is 0. 126 meter. The specimen is made of the same grade of steel as the quenched component with section thickness matching that of the component, which is a departure from standard laboratory tests. The test is carried out in the plant under actual conditions dispensing the need to correlate the standard cooling curve data and end quench hardenability tests done in the laboratory to industrial practice. To test the suite of mathematical models associated with the Reference QuenchProbe hardware and software, specimens of different grades of steels were instrumented with a single thermocouple near the surface of the specimen. Using the cooling data at the point of measurement, the cooling rates, microstructure, and hardness at other critical locations were computed. An enthalpy-based non-linear inverse heat conduction model was coupled with austenite decomposition models for handling the latent heat liberated during quenching. Several steels ranging from low carbon to medium alloy steels were both end-quenched by water and immersion quenched in several industrial quenchants. The computed hardness of end quenched and immersion quenched specimens were shown to be in good agreement with the measured values. The Reference QuenchProbe is thus shown to generate data needed for heat treatment process design including quenchant selection, which can be directly used in practice. Year: 2006 The Ems estuary has constantly changed over the past centuries both from man-made and natural influences. On the time scale of thousands of years, sea level rise has created the estuary and dynamically changed its boundaries. More recently, storm surges created the Dollard sub-basin in the 14th -15th centuries. Beginning in the 16th century, diking and reclamation of land has greatly altered the surface area of the Ems estuary, particularly in the Dollard. These natural and anthropogenic changes to the surface area of the Ems altered the flow patterns of water, the tidal characteristics, and the patterns of sediment deposition and erosion. Since 1945, reclamation of land has halted and the borders of the Ems estuary have changed little. Sea level rise has continued, and over the past 40 years the rate of increase in mean high water (MHW) along the German coast has accelerated to 40 cm/ century. Climate has varied on a decadal time scale due to long-term variations in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), which controls precipitation, temperature, and the direction and magnitude of winds. Between 1960 and 1990 the most intense variation in the NAO index on record was observed. As a result the magnitude and frequency of storm surges increased, and mean wave heights increased at 1-2 cm/year. Currently the NAO index—and therefore storminess—is trending downwards. Over the longer term, global warming models predict an average temperature rise of 2 degrees Celsius over the next century. A doubling of CO2 is expected to increase sea level by 30 cm, while the significant wind speed and wave heights in the North Sea are predicted to increase by 50 cm/s and 50 cm, respectively. Beginning in the late 1950’s, dredging activity and construction measures in harbours and shipping channels greatly altered the physical processes in the Ems. Deepening and streamlining the Ems River and shipping channel between the 1960s and 1990s decreased the hydraulic roughness and increased the tidal range in the river above Emden by as much as 1.5 m. At the turbidity maximum between Emden and Papenburg, concentrations of sediment are currently between 1-2 orders of magnitude larger than in the 1950’s, and fluid mud layers of several meters thickness occur. Other man-made changes, such as gas pipelines and the expansion of harbours, have often caused significant, but more localized, changes to the estuary. Between the mid 19th century and the 1970’s, dumping of organic waste—agricultural, industrial, and human—severely stressed the ecology of the Dollard sub-basin in particular. Since then the input of organic waste has been greatly reduced and anoxic conditions eliminated. However, the increase in turbidity at the turbidity maximum has caused depleted oxygen concentrations and periodic anoxia between Pogum and Papenburg during the summer months (personal communication, H. Juergens; Talke et al, 2005). The Ems is a relatively well studied estuary. Significant research projects have included the BOEDE project in the 1970’s --1980’s and the BOA and INTRAMUD projects in the 1990’s. These projects and other efforts have amassed a deep literature in the knowledge of tidal flats, fluid mud and flocculation, and mixing and dispersion processes. Projects currently underway are focusing on tidal dynamics and the affects of dredging in the high turbidity zone between Emden and Herbrum. Optimal management of the estuary is the goal of the HARBASINS project. Many analytical and numerical models have been applied to the Ems estuary to estimate tidal range, storm surges, wave fields, sediment transport, and mixing and dispersion processes. Analytical models to estimate mixing of scalars and sediment fluxes (Sediment Trend Analysis) have been extensively used. Numerical models such as WAQUA, unTRIM, MIKE3, Telemac 2D, SWAN, Delft 3D –Sed, and others have been applied to the Ems. Only the neutral molecules of 2,4-D are transport active. The ionized 2,4-D molecules do not modify the transport of ions, and do not by themselves permeate through lipid membranes. The results suggest that the enhancement of transport of positively charged ions is dominated by the increase of the ion translocation rate constant. It has been shown that membrane transport of negatively charged tetraphenylborate ions is suppressed by 2,4-D. The effect is dominated by the suppression of translocation of these ions across membrane interior, rather than by the decrease of their adsorption at the membrane surface. It has been shown that the enhancement of nonactin-mediated transport of potassium ions by 2,4-D can be accounted for by a simple carrier model. From the changes of kinetic parameters of nonactin-K('+) transport, membrane conductance due to positively charged tetraphenylarsonium ions and also from the changes of membrane conductance and relaxation time constant due to transport of negatively charged tetraphenylborate ions, the changes of the electric potential of the membrane interior have been estimated. The potential of the membrane interior becomes more negative in the presence of 2,4-D and its change is proportional to the aqueous concentration of 2,4-D. The effect of 2,4-D on ion transport was explained by the hypothesis that a layer of 2,4-D molecules is absorbed within the membrane/water interfacial region, and that the 2,4-D molecules are oriented in such a way that their dipole moment is directed toward the aqueous medium. The results suggest that this layer is located in the hydrocarbon side of the interface. The hypothesis has been confirmed by the measurements of changes of electric potential difference across air/water and air/lipid monolayer/water interfaces. It has been found that the electric potential of the nonpolar side of the interface decreases in the presence of neutral molecules of 2,4-D, which is in agreement with the conclusions drawn from the results of membrane experiments. The effect of the other auxin-type phenoxy herbicides, 2,4,5-T and 2,4-DB on lipid bilayer membranes has been found to be similar to that of 2,4-D. In contrast, the phenoxy acid 2,4,6-T, has very little or no herbicidal activity, and at the same time has small effect on ion transport in membranes. Biologically active 2,4-D derivatives, amino acid conjugates of 2,4-D (isoleucine, leucine and valine conjugates) have been found to be also transport active in a manner similar to 2,4-D. Similar conclusions have been drawn from experiments with natural auxin indole acetic acid. The results obtained in this work suggest the existence of correlation between the biological activity of herbicides acting as plant growth regulators and their ability to enhance transport of positively charged ions across lipid membranes. This work provides insight into the physical origin of such activity. Year: 1986 The Fountain Landslide located along I-84, five kilometers east of Cascade Locks, Oregon has moved periodically for over thirty years. Aerial photographs taken prior to recorded movement of the landslide show the headscarp of a large preexisting landslide. In 1952 a cut was made into the toe of the landslide to straighten Highway 30. The recorded movement history begins at this time. Stabilization procedures in the late 1950's focused on dewatering the slide mass. Movement had nearly stopped by 1957. A deeper cut was made into the toe of the landslide in 1966 to widen the highway to the four-laned I-8ON (later renamed I-84). Accelerated movement resulted. The Oregon State Highway Division removed 264,000 cubic meters of material from the head of the movement zone. Accelerated movement continued. The Oregon State Highway Division then began intense research of the landslide. Research included core logs, slope inclinometers, and the ground water data. The western portion of the slide mass was unloaded more extensively in 1970 (1.2 million cubic meters). This later unloading slowed down the movement, but it continues periodically. The oldest unit found in the area is a volcaniclastic unit. It is found only in core logs in the SW portion of the slide. The basalts of the Columbia River Basalt Group are found intact and as talus in the study area. Quartz diorite intrusives younger than the Columbia River Basalt Group is found at the surf ace and at depth along the entire length of the toe of the landslide. Wind River Lava crossed from Washington, dammed the Columbia River and was deposited within the study area. The slide mass consists primarily of Columbia River Basalt Group talus and Wind River Lava talus. The slip plane consists primarily of rocky mudstone. The ground water table is elevated over the intrusive at the toe of the landslide and over the volcaniclastic unit at the head. Surface cracks and scarps indicate that the slide mass moves northward, drops at the head and heaves at the toe. A slope stability analysis of the Fountain Landslide showed that the instability here is the result of elevated groundwater and the removal of material at the toe for highway construction. It also showed that the eastern portion is more stable than the western portion. The differences in the stability result of the addition of fill at the toe and a lower ground water table in the eastern portion. The development of the prehistoric slide resulted when the dam of Wind River Lava was removed and lateral support for the deposit was lost. This study shows that it is essential to have adequate geologic information prior to construction or remedial design for any preexisting landslide to avoid stability problems. Surface cracks and scarps indicate that the slide mass moves northward, drops at the head and heaves at the toe. A slope stability analysis of the Fountain Landslide showed that the instability here is the result of elevated groundwater and the removal of material at the toe for highway construction. It also showed that the eastern portion is more stable than the western portion. The differences in the stability result of the addition of fill at the toe and a lower ground water table in the eastern portion. The development of the prehistoric slide resulted when the dam of Wind River Lava was removed and lateral support for the deposit was lost. This study shows that it is essential to have adequate geologic information prior to construction or remedial design for any preexisting landslide to avoid stability problems. Close

BSL water-derived DNA contains genes for complete C, N, and S cycles, and low hybridization to probes for N and S oxidation suggests that reductive processes dominate. Selection imposed by low nutrients, low pH, and high temperature appear to result in low diversity and evenness of genes for key functions involved in C, N, and S cycling. TSCA only retroactively addressed chemical hazards, after they had been deemed unsafe and previously unrestricted in the public. A bill to overhaul TSCA, the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act (House Amendment to the Senate Amendment to H.R. 2576, TSCA Modernization Act of 2015), was passed by the Senate on June 7, 2016 and sent on for President Obama’s signature. The amended law will give the EPA new authority to evaluate the safety of a new chemical before it enters the marketplace. It will also allow EPA to evaluate the safety of chemicals already known to be risks, including chemicals found to persist in the human body and in the environment. The Columbia River is presented as a case study as an example of a significant waterbody with research and regulatory gaps concerning CECs. Increasingly stringent state and federal regulations apply to these fish passageways, and designers must become more cognizant of conditions over a range of flows to accommodate fish movement and avoid expensive structural failure of these passageways. Fish passage structures are built when roads cross streambeds and may include culverts, or bridges. When these structures are built, the streambeds are re-created using a technique called “roughened channels”. Roughened channels are man-made stream channels utilized for re-creating the hydraulics necessary for adequate stream passage, and this may include new constructions or retrofits of older, inadequate structures. Mixtures of materials are used to construct the bed of roughened channels, ranging from fines such as sand, silt and gravel to coarse elements like cobbles and boulders. Fines are a critical element in limiting permeability of the constructed bed thus keeping stream flow at the surface of the roughened channel during low flow periods. This report discusses work of a research project designed to discover factors that are key to successful long-term implementation of fish passageways, especially focused on the construction process. Areas of inquiry postulated in this study are that failures experienced in actual installations may be due to inadequate range and/or mix of soil and rock material gradation; unexpected water velocity, especially during high flows; inadequate mixing of rock and soil materials during construction; and inadequate compaction of rock and soil materials during construction. For each of the concentrations of sulfur dioxide, five levels of moisture (0%', 11%, 20%, 50% and saturated) were assigned to the selected woodchips. Fifteen combinations or experiments were done for the research. The results of the experiments show that dry wood (0% moisture content) had comparatively low characteristics in the adsorption of sulfur dioxide. For instance, at an influent so2 concentration of 1.12 ppm., about· 6 grams of dry woodchips adsorbed 29.37 µg. of sulfur dioxide in comparison to 2Q90.5 µg. of SO2 adsorbed in the same weight of woodchips but saturated with moisture. At an influent SO2 concentration of 1.83 ppm., the adsorption of sulfur dioxide increased from 7.73 µg. for the dry wood to 745.15µg. in the water saturated wood. For an influent SO2 concentration of 4.60ppm., dry wood adsorbed 15.26 µg. of SO2 while the moisture saturated wood adsorbed 1446.2 µg.
