In this paper, we investigate appropriate temporal scales of dominant low flow indicators: precipitation (P), evapotranspiration (ET) and the standardized groundwater storage index (G). This analysis is done in the context of low flow forecasting with a lead time of 14 days in the Main River, a tributary of the Rhine River, located in Germany. Correlation coefficients (i.e. Pearson, Kendall and Spearman) are used to reveal the appropriate temporal scales of dominant low flow indicators at different time lags between low flows and indicators and different support scales of indicators. The results are presented for lag values and support scales, which result in correlation coefficients between low flows and dominant indicators falling into the maximum 10% percentile range. P has a maximum Spearman correlation coefficient (ρ) of 0.38 (p = 0.95) at a support scale of 336 days and a lag of zero days. ET has a maximum ρ of –0.60 (p = 0.95) at a support scale of 280 days and a lag of 56 days and G has a maximum ρ of 0.69 (p = 0.95) at a support scale of 7 days and a lag of 3 days. The isolation age was calculated from the excess Cl‾ in the holes, and varied from 0 to 5 years (a), consistent with the last hot summer when the cryoconite holes were open to the atmosphere. The holes progressively deepen with isolation age. Variations in DIC, DOC, K⁺ and SO²⁻₄ suggest that dissolution of primary minerals in the cryoconite debris, cyclical precipitation and dissolution of secondary carbonates, net photosynthesis over summer and net respiration during the autumnal freeze are the principal reactions which perturb the seasonal and annual solute concentrations in the holes. DOC is generated in the holes at a rate of 7.5 μg C cm⁻² a⁻¹, and non-sea-salt K⁺ accumulates in frozen holes at a rate of 0.073 μeq cm⁻² a⁻¹. This multiple equal weight indicator approach confirmed that different drivers were associated with different vulnerability maps in the sub-basins of the CRB. Water quality variables are more important than water supply and water demand variables in the Willamette River basin, whereas water supply and demand variables are more important than water quality variables in the Upper Snake and Upper Columbia River basins. This result suggests that current water resources management and practices drive much of the vulnerability within the study area. The analysis suggests the need for increased coordination of water management across multiple levels of water governance to reduce water resource vulnerability in the CRB and a potentially different weighting scheme that explicitly takes into account the input of various water stakeholders. We applied a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based distributed hydrologic model at a monthly scale to assess the effects of future climate change on runoff from the Upper Clackamas River Basin (UCB; located near Portland, Oregon, USA). Once validated using historic flow data, the model was run for 2 future time periods (2010–2039 and 2070–2099) using climate change simulations from 2 global circulation modelling groups (HadCM2 from the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research, and CGCM1 from the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis) as inputs. The model runs projected that mean peak snowpack in the study area will drop dramatically (36 to 49% by 2010–2039, and 83 to 88% by 2070–2099), resulting in earlier runoff and diminished spring and summer flows. Increases in mean winter runoff by 2070–2099 vary from moderate (13.7%) to large (46.4%), depending on the changes to precipitation projected by the general circulation models (GCMs). These results are similar to those of other studies in areas dependent on snowpack for seasonal runoff, but the reductions to snowpack are more severe in this study than in similar studies of the entire Columbia River Basin, presumably because the elevations of much of the Upper Clackamas Basin are near the current mid-winter snow line. In this study, we collected salts from the Miers, Garwood, and Taylor Valleys on the Antarctic continent, as well as around McMurdo Station on Ross Island in close proximity to water sources with the goal of understanding salt geochemistry in relationship to the hydrology of the area. Halite is ubiquitous; sodium is the major cation (ranging from 70%–90% of cations by meq kg-1 sediment) and chloride is the major anion (>50%) in nearly all samples. However, a wide variety of salt phases and morphologies are tentatively identified through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) work. We present new data that identifies trona (Na3(CO3)(HCO3)·2H2O), tentative gaylussite (Na2Ca(CO3)2·5H2O), and tentative glauberite (Na2Ca(SO4)2) in the MDV, of which the later one has not been documented previously. Our work allows for the evaluation of processes that influence brine evolution on a local scale, consequently informing assumptions underlying large-scale processes (such as paleoclimate) in the MDV. Hydrological modeling conducted in FREZCHEM and PHREEQC suggests that a model based on aerosol deposition alone in low elevations on the valley floor inadequately characterizes salt distributions found on the surfaces of the soil because it does not account for other hydrologic inputs/outputs. Implications for the salt distributions include their use as tracers for paleolake levels, geochemical tracers of ephemeral water tracks or “wet patches” in the soil, indicators of chemical weathering products, and potential delineators of ecological communities. Year: 2010 One-dimensional nanostructures such as silicon nanowires (SiNW) are attractive candidates for low power density electronic and optoelectronic devices including sensors. A new simple method for SiNW bulk synthesis[1, 2] is demonstrated in this work, which is inexpensive and uses low toxicity materials, thereby offering a safe, energy efficient and green approach. The method uses low flammability liquid phenylsilanes, offering a safer avenue for SiNW growth compared with using silane gas. A novel, duo-chamber glass vessel is used to create a low-pressure environment where SiNWs are grown through vapor-liquid-solid mechanism using gold nanoparticles as a catalyst. The catalyst decomposes silicon precursor vapors of diphenylsilane and triphenylsilane and precipitates single crystal SiNWs, which appear to grow parallel to the substrate surface. This opens up possibilities for synthesizing nano-junctions amongst wires which is important for the grid architecture of nanoelectronics proposed by Likharev[3]. Even bulk synthesis of SiNW is feasible using sacrificial substrates such as CaCO(3) that can be dissolved post-synthesis. Furthermore, by dissolving appropriate dopants in liquid diphenylsilane, a controlled doping of the nanowires is realized without the use of toxic gases and expensive mass flow controllers. Upon boron doping, we observe a characteristic red shift in photoluminescence spectra. In summary, an inexpensive and versatile method for SiNW is presented that makes these exotic materials available to any lab at low cost. The second objective of this study is to draw on current literature to help determine a possible explanation for the crow gatherings that occur at the Portland State University Park Blocks. I observed the population of crows from October 23rd 2016 to March 31st 2016 with a restricted survey area around Millar Library on the Portland State University Campus and Market St (a five block area). I made observations two days a week for periods lasting between 1.25 and 3 hours, while making both qualitative and quantitative observations of crow numbers and activity. Seasonal variation of crows in the Park Blocks on PSU campus increased from mid-fall into the winter season in a non-linear fashion. Weather influenced flocking behavior as crow numbers exhibited a weak tendency to peak at intermediate values of precipitation and to increase with wind speed. This study can serve as a base for the future work to help explain why American Crows use communal roosts during the winter months. Ice transparency was the most variable parameter that affected benthic light dose, both spatiallyand between years. Patterns of lamina accrual corresponded to irradiance history, with laminae thatwere initiated in high transmission years thicker than those from low transmission years. 3. A shading experiment confirmed that accrual of lamina thickness, calcite precipitation and ash-free dry mass were determined by irradiance, but photosynthetic biomass and phototrophic speciescomposition were less affected. 4. Buried laminae decomposed only slowly over time, with potentially viable phototrophs manylaminae down into the microbial mat. Decay rate increased only slightly with shading. 5. We conclude that the microbial mats in Lake Hoare are characterised by remarkable stability, withslow accumulation rates and turnover of biomass over time. Laminated microbial mats are important ecosystem components of perennially ice-coveredAntarctic dry valley lakes. In order to understand better their response to changing environment, wemade observations and carried out a manipulation experiment to determine their response tovariations in irradiance in Lake Hoare (77°380S, 162°530E). 2. Ice transparency was the most variable parameter that affected benthic light dose, both spatiallyand between years. Patterns of lamina accrual corresponded to irradiance history, with laminae thatwere initiated in high transmission years thicker than those from low transmission years. 3. A shading experiment confirmed that accrual of lamina thickness, calcite precipitation and ash-free dry mass were determined by irradiance, but photosynthetic biomass and phototrophic speciescomposition were less affected. 4. Buried laminae decomposed only slowly over time, with potentially viable phototrophs manylaminae down into the microbial mat. Decay rate increased only slightly with shading. 5. We conclude that the microbial mats in Lake Hoare are characterised by remarkable stability, withslow accumulation rates and turnover of biomass over time. The addition of paleoflood data to the gaged and historical data significantly reduced uncertainties related to flood-frequency. For all study reaches the 95-percent confidence intervals about the low-probability quantile estimates (100-, 200-, and 500-year recurrence-intervals) were reduced by at least 78 percent relative to those for the gaged records only. In some cases, 95-percent uncertainty intervals were reduced by 99 percent or more. Additionally, a stratigraphic record of 35 large paleofloods and four large historical floods during the last 2,000 years (including several floods not used in the frequency analyses due to age constraints) reveal four flooding episodes at A.D.: 130-40, 640-670, 900-1290, and 1410 to present. During the Medieval Climate Anomaly (~A.D. 900-1300) the Black Hills experienced 13 large floods compared to nine large floods in the previous 800 years. This high concentration of large flooding events were likely caused by: 1) instability of air masses caused by stronger than normal westerlies; 2) larger or more frequent hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean; and/or 3) reduced land covering vegetation and an increase in forest fires caused by the severe drought. By examining the response of streamflow to the MCA, it seems likely that if severe long-term drought conditions persist for the Black Hills region, an increase in the frequency and magnitude of large floods can be expected. The Black Hills paleofloods represent some of the largest known floods, relative to drainage area, for the United States. Many of the other largest known United States floods are in areas with physiographic and climatologic conditions broadly similar to the Black Hills--semi-arid and rugged landscapes that intercept and focus heavy precipitation from convective storm systems.
