Two facilities were selected in each of the aforementioned counties and researchers from our team surveyed the pedestrian environmental features of the surrounding area within a quarter-mile radius of the each facility. The survey data from each site was then distributed among two groups for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Quantitative analysis consisted of a compiling process that took the measures of quantifiable features (e.g. number of sidewalk breaks, abandoned lots, etc.) gathered in the field and standardized them in a single database, allowing an objective, cross-county comparison of the frequency of pedestrian environmental qualities identified as being indicative of age-friendliness. Qualitative analysis involved the distillation of recurring themes and observations reported by surveyors as they gave their impressions of the areas they visited, which were then used to interpret and appraise the accuracy of marketing materials issued by the target facilities. Both investigations were then contextualized by a separate group tasked with reviewing existing scholarship and impressions of academics working in geriatrics and other pertinent fields. Ultimately this examination also sought to identify the exact dimensions and characteristics of an age- friendly community, as well. Taken together, the research done in this project has lead us conclude that each county will have unique obstacles to overcome in pursuit of greater age friendliness yet they will need to act cohesively and cooperatively in order to do so. This will involve paying closer attention to how integrated the senior population is in the wider social sphere of their communities as well as working to ensure that crucial resources remain accessible to them wherever they may live. These factors were the personal hygiene, sex, age and skin condition of the human host. A detailed view of the habitat of this parasite is also included so that the controversy surrounding its role as a possible pathogen or vector of disease could be explored in light of the current knowledge. A number of sites of infestation were sampled by a number of different techniques. The primary sample site was the nasal area of the face which was examined by slit lamp magnification after chemical application to partially expose the mites. A secondary site involved the eyelash follicles from which the lashes were epilated and examined for mites under the microscope. The 441 subjects examined in the nasal area were tabulated by age, sex and skin condition and the incidence of infestation was computed for each of five age groups. There was a definite increase in incidence of Demodex with the advancing age of the host and the normal and oily skin conditions appeared to be much more involved than the dry skin condition. A similar increase in incidence with advancing age was apparent in the 143 subjects whose eyelashes were examined. The results from both areas exhibited a statistical correlation between the age and skin condition of the human host and the presence of the mites. The explanation of the increase in incidence with the advancing age of the human host is based on the development and secretory rate of the sebaceous glands of the human host. Past studies have shown that Demodex lives in and around the sebaceous glands of the skin and feeds on sebaceous material and cellular debris. The face appears to be the habitat of optimum occurrence which corresponds to the distribution of sebaceous follicles and glands whose size and rate of secretion are greater that those over most of the body. The role of Demodex in the formation of ingrown hairs on the neck is discussed as a possible, new clinical entity. The influence of the host’s personal hygienic habits on demodectic infestation remains rather obscure. Although the accumulation of sebaceous material would tend to favor the maintenance of mites, the reservoirs of the sebaceous follicles of the face in which the mites are found are not affected by normal soap and water cleansing. Inhabitation of the eyelash follicles may be enhanced by ineffective cleansing, but more study is needed to determine the validity of this contention. The finding of selective sites of infestation on the human host led to speculation on the possibility of physiological races of Demodex. Although it is difficult to determine the validity of reports by earlier workers, there appears to be a decreasing trend in the incidence of Demodex folliculorum since its discovery over a century ago. The sample was selected by a two- stage cluster sampling taken from the Southeast catchment area of metropolitan Portland, Oregon. From this sample of 787individuals, the survey was conducted by trained interviewers, using a questionnaire and personal interview. The data used in this research project were then extracted from the larger survey, and computed to determine the relationship of age, income and education to willingness to care for foster children. The data were extracted on the basis of the chosen variables of income, age and education and five questions relating specifically to willingness to care for foster children. As had been anticipated, the findings showed that the general population is not willing to care for foster children. However, certain significant findings were related to willingness to care for foster children. A significant relationship was found between income and willingness to care for foster children in that those respondents with incomes between $4,000-$20,000 expressed the most willingness to care for foster children while there was significant underrepresentation in both the highest and lowest income groupings to express a willingness to care for foster children with an almost lineal relationship of decreasing age with increasing willingness to care for foster children. There is no significant relationship, it was found, between education of the respondent and willingness to care for foster children. There is a lineal relationship of increasing willingness to care for foster children with increasing age of the foster child. Of those individuals expressing a willingness to care for foster children, there is no significant decrease in willingness because of physical disability, minor emotional problems or mental retardation. The results of this study have certain implication for recruitment and selection of foster parents. The findings indicate the need for further research to explore why more individuals in the population do not express a willingness to care for foster children, how such an interest can be encouraged and what criteria can be used in recruitment and selection. Year: 2014 Although scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) since 2005 has contributed to a decline of about 30% in the global annual number of human immunodeficiency (HIV)–related deaths and declines in global HIV incidence, estimated annual HIV-related deaths among adolescents have increased by about 50%, and estimated adolescent HIV incidence has been relatively stable. In 2012, an estimated 2,500 (40%) of all 6,300 daily new HIV infections occurred among persons aged 15–24 years. Difficulty enrolling adolescents and young adults in ART and high rates of loss to follow-up (LTFU) after ART initiation might be contributing to mortality and HIV incidence in this age group, but data are limited. Age-related differences in enrollment characteristics and outcomes were analyzed among 16,421 patients aged ≥15 years starting ART in seven African countries (Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia, Uganda, and Tanzania) during 2004–2012. Patient characteristics and outcomes were compared across three age groups: adolescents and young adults (15–24 years), middle-aged adults (25–49 years), and older adults (≥50 years). Compared with older adults, adolescents and young adults had higher LTFU rates in all seven countries, reaching statistical significance in three countries (Côte d’Ivoire, Mozambique, and Tanzania) in both crude and multivariable analyses. The higher risk for LTFU among adolescent and young adult ART enrollees, compared with older adults, increases their risk for death and increases the risk they will transmit HIV to seronegative sex partners. Effective interventions to reduce LTFU for adolescent and young adult ART enrollees could help reduce mortality and lower HIV incidence in this age group. Annual rings from fifteen trees were counted in order to establish age versus trunk diameter ratios. This greatly simplified the dating of trees. Transects were then run through individual groves to determine population age structures. These age structures, along with Q. garryana's distribution patterns, were graphically compared with historic temperature, precipitation, and growing season data. The effect of livestock grazing on oak reproduction was examined. Potential vagility of the species was evaluated by estimating the potential for acorn dispersion by airfall, streams, vertebrates, and the human (aboriginal) population. Finally, pollen evidence was scrutinized in conjunction with acorn dispersal rates in order to determine the longer term history of Q. garryana in this portion cf its range. To help build capacity and to enhance student learning, a short-term international service-learning program was implemented in 2004 in partnership with the Jessie F. Richardson Foundation and Nicaraguan community stakeholders. Graduate and undergraduate students at Portland State University complete coursework for one term in the United States then travel to Nicaragua for about two weeks to participate in educational, research, and service activities, primarily in group homes for older Nicaraguans. Students learn about global aging, gerontology, community development, service learning, and Nicaraguan history and culture, then apply their gerontology-related knowledge by training direct care staff, older adults and their family members, and students. The authors describe the impetus for and evolution of the program, students’ evaluation of the program, faculty observations on program benefits and challenges, lessons learned, and future plans.
