Built in a protected place surrounded on the river side by a dam with a gate to control water flow, the water buckets lifted water and dumped it into a through on stilts which fed into a pipe which carried water as far east as their house. About one a week the water wheels were stooped and tethered by a chain so repairs could be made. The river first appears in the photograph after it winds around a bend in the embankments. Toward the top of the photograph a mountain range can be seen in the distance. The top of the photograph displays large, dark clouds that threaten rain.
