Hemmed in by forested hills, with a clear mountain atmosphere and cool summer nights it has become one of hte great resting-places of the South. Ferns are characteristic of New Zealand forest. Some, like our own, love the moist shady depths of deep gullies; some hang from crevices and drape the faces of cliffs with a film curtain; some- the tree ferns, have trunks as thick as trees, are so large that they must be hewn down with axes, and are often 50 feet high, with an umbrella like spread at the crown, of some 30 feet in diameter. The Eucalyptus mannifera is gathered by the natives for food. Another form of vegetation is the grass-tree. The rugged stem grows to a height of from 2 to 12 feet and from its top springs a tuft of drooping wiry foliage, from the center of which rises a spike like a huge bulrush. In winter when it flowers, this spike becomes covered with white stars. A heath covered with grass-trees in bloom is a singular and beautiful sight." Three articles are reprinted from Contracting, and the fourth, by Henry Bowlby, is reprinted from American Forestry. The articles and black and white photographs describe in brief the impetus for and history of the building of the Columbia River Highway and show the scenic beauties to be viewed from the road. There seems be be some advertisement for Warrenite, a road surface placed over macadam roads, which was used on the Highway. Both general description and more specific information about contracts, engineering, and construction history are contained in the articles. After graduating from high school as class valedictorian in 1949, he enrolled in Purdue University, from which he earned four degrees: B.S., Forestry, 1953; B.S., Agriculture, 1957; M.S., Agricultural Education, 1958; Ph.D., Measurement, 1962. Courtney did postdoctorate work in statistics at Oregon State University in 1968. After serving in the U.S. Army in Germany (1953-1955), Courtney was appointed assistant professor in the Stout State University (Wisconsin) School of Education in 1962. He remained at Stout State until 1972, when he became Professor and Director of Research and Development in OSU's Division of Vocational, Adult, and Community College Education. Courtney has held a number of faculty appointments at OSU. Courtney twice served in the OSU Faculty Senate, 1979-81 and 1986-88; was a member of the OSU Press Board of Governors, 1981-1984; and served on various OSU committees, including the OSU Library Expansion Faculty Advisory Committee. He received OSU's Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award for 1985-86 and was a Senior Collaborative Fulbright Research Scholar to Thailand in 1994-95. Title: E.
